I'm watching TV right now and it's official, there is a new pope.
After Three Votes there is a new pope
I'm not a Christian but I think it's an important event ;)
For the moment we don't have his name but in 30 min we will have it ;)

Do you think he will continue John Paul II work or be different?

Yes they did, I'm watching TV and waiting for him to appear ;)
Here's a small article from ABC news :

Bells Chime, Signaling Election of PopeBells Chime at St. Peter's Basilica, Signaling Pope Elected in Millennium's First Papal Conclave

Faithful wave a U.S. and a Vatican flag as they wait to see smoke billowing from the chimney atop the Sistine Chapel, at the Vatican, during the second day of the Conclave, Tuesday, April 19, 2005. Black smoke indicates that cardinals sequestered inside the Sistine chapel had not yet chosen a new pope. (AP Photo/Andrew Medichini)

VATICAN CITY Apr 19, 2005 —

Bells chimed at St. Peter's Basilica on Tuesday evening, announcing to the world that a new pope was elected in the first papal conclave of the new millennium. Crowds in the square chanted: "Viva il Papa!" or "Long live the pope!"

This is so exciting! :D I didn't even know there was a new pope cause I swear that smoke looked gray. I think they said like 15 minutes until they're going to name the new pope. ^_^

The new pope is Joseph Ratzinger.
He is from Germany and he is apparently going to carry on John Paul II 's work
His new name is in French : Benoit XVI don't know the english version of Benoit

I think it's Ratzinger. I think it's spelled like that. :) Benedict XVI. That's his new name. He was the front runner. Although, I thought it would go back to an Italian.

Don't lynch me, but this is the guy I didn't want them to choose. I hear he is even more conservative than the last one, and this is going to do nothing to help the AIDS crisis the last Pope was largely responsible for.

I know I corrected it, I just saw his name on TV ;)
Yes he was one the front runner, but I thought it was going to be either someone from Europe or South America.
He was someone close to JP II and he speaks 5 languages.
That's all I know about him ;)

ETA : Isn't he a little bit too old? He is 78

VATICAN CITY - Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany, a longtime guardian of doctrinal orthodoxy, was elected the new pope Tuesday evening in the first conclave of the new millennium. He chose the name Pope Benedict XVI.

Ratzinger, the first German pope in centuries, served John Paul II since 1981 as head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. In that position, he has disciplined church dissidents and upheld church policy against attempts by liberals for reforms. He turned 78 on Saturday.

He's already 78?!

I'll ditto on that

they're saying he'll be an inter-pope

Yeah... I had a feeling it was going to be him. Everyone was saying it was going to be him. I was hoping for the Cardinal from South Africa. I'm surprised he took on the name Benedict XVI.

This is such a bad move for the Catholic Church. I am a Catholic and a woman, and it is very hard to continue being a Catholic woman in society today. I am not a strict Catholic by any means, but these conservative medieval ideas make me turn further and further form the religion I was Christened into.

AIDS crisis the last Pope was largely responsible for.

I think thats very unfair, it's hardly his fault people go out and have unsafe sex.

I was quite shocked at first, I had thought we would have a pope from the devolping world, however the Cardinals are best placed to chose the pope and they have done what they think is right.

The pope is God's messenger on earth and while the Catechism says we can disagree with the pope, we are subject to human frailties, where as he is blessed, so whatever are personal opinions, it would be wrong for us to say he was wrong.

And you never know, he might suprise everyone.

I agree with peanutbutter, those ppl don't use condoms because the pope told them not to do.
In the churches they are told using condoms is forbidden so is taking birth control bill -_- .
I don't know how many times I've heard that on TV! Those ppl have aids because they did what they were told to! It's not like in Europe or America, things in Africa are different <_<

It is totally fair.

Do some research. I haven't said anything out of respect since the Pope's death, but he did some terrible things. Some less biased newspapers dicussed the bad things, but most were caught up in the hype and only said what a wonderful man he was.

AIDS in Africa is out of control, and can only be stopped by the promotion of condom use.

However, the Vatican released numerous statements saying that condoms may indeed CAUSE AIDS, and that the virus 'leaks' through condoms so there's no point being 'immoral' and using them. In fact, on the day before World AIDS Day, the Pope released a statement re-stating these lies - a deliberate and coldly calculating move.

And apart from that, population control is a serious issue in the world today, and the current Vatican stance on contraception is just ridiculous.

The Vatican have a hell of a lot to answer for, they tell lies because the world around them is changing in a way that is not so easily allowing them to control society. You reap what you sow and one day the vatican will.
