Chapter Thirty-Seven
It was two hours later that Jack first heard a voice that made him sit up a little higher in his seat, Sydney was asleep in her chair opposite him, she was lent forward with her head on Irina’s hip as she slept. They looked so peaceful and serene that Jack hadn’t the heart to wake either of them. He had slipped his jacket around Sydney’s shoulders and brushed her hair away from her face, it was a little longer and lighter in colour then he remembered.
He stood up and opened the door a little to look around it and heard three small popping noises, he saw a woman stride down the hall towards him.
A flash of memory and he was looking into a rear-view mirror, Irina was next to him wet from the rain, crystal blue eyes flashed in the mirror.
The same blue eyes were looking at him now, only they were framed by short black hair accompanied by a sly smile.
She was a tall woman, possibly Irina’s height; maybe with the heels on a little taller, she was wearing black slacks, a brown shirt with a long jacket over the top and a superior expression on her face.
“Mr Bristow, we meet again.” She smiled as she came closer, he couldn’t place her accent but she had a smooth calm voice that demanded your complete attention, like Irina.
“I take it this isn’t a social call to see how your boss is doing?” he said softly mindful of his sleeping wife and daughter.
“No, its not, our network received intelligence that a warrant has been issued for her arrest, the NSA has sent agents to the building we retrieved your daughter from and they are scouring Rome looking for her, we have to get her out of the city.” The woman informed him her voice low as she noticed Irina and Sydney were both sleeping.
Jack didn’t say anything he was too busy processing what she had said, the woman gently manouevered herself through the door and around him and he closed it behind her.
“There’s also a warrant out on you Mr Bristow.” She said softly looking at Irina.
Jack blinked and nodded, he had begun to suspect something like that was going to happen, his rogue behaviour would not have been tolerated for much longer despite his long years of service.
“I have transportation waiting to take you all out of the country.” She explained as Sydney began to stir.
Jack nodded but looked to Irina; she was in no state to be moved.
“Dad?” Sydney blinked and lifted her head blinking some more.
“Apparently we’re not welcome in Rome any more.” He said softly.
The woman walked over and smiled at Sydney who was looking down at her fathers’ jacket in a peculiar way.
“The nurses will only be unconscious for twenty minutes, that’s if someone doesn’t raise the alarm and the cameras will only be down for half an hour.” The newcomer explained.
Sydney nodded and stood up, “Dad did you bring some of mom’s clothes?” she asked as the woman turned off the power to the machines and started unhooking them.
He nodded and pulled the bag out from under his chair.
Irina’s head rolled a little, she opened her eyes and blinked at them sleepily, “What’s going on?” she asked hoarsely.
“We’re getting you out of here Irina, the Americans are looking for you.” The woman explained.
“The Americans are always looking for me.” Irina whinged as Sydney and Irina’s employee went to work sitting her up gently and Jack went to find a wheelchair for her to sit in.
“Zena,” Irina began as she began to wake up a little more and Sydney rifled through the bag for clothes her mother could wear.
“Everything is seen to Irina, passports, papers, money, travel logs, everything.” The woman named Zena replied with a smile.
“For Jack and Sydney too?” Irina asked as Zena helped Irina out of the hospital gown and into a bra and shirt.
“Yes Irina, for them as well.” She nodded and smiled as Sydney turned a little pinkish and kept her eyes averted while Irina changed.
“What did you have to do to get all this done so fast?” Irina asked as Jack returned with the wheel chair and both he and Zena made sure Irina was comfortable.
“Promised your secretary a pay rise.” Zena smiled.
Irina nodded and smiled, “I was going to double her pay anyway.”
“Let’s go.” Jack said as Sydney grabbed up her mothers bag and they all headed out of the hospital, Zena pushing open doors ahead of them and checking the coast was clear, Sydney walked beside her mother as her father pushed the wheel chair.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They made it to a parking lot and Zena dashed over to a dark SUV and unlocked it, Sydney and Jack helped Irina climb in the back and both father and daughter climbed in on opposites of her.
Irina took Sydney’s hand as Zena climbed in the front and started the engine.
“Where are we going?” Sydney asked as they pulled out of the parking lot and sped off into the night.
“A private air strip, I’ve booked passage on a flight for the three of you.” Zena explained shooting looks into the rear view mirror and side mirrors.
Irina closed her eyes and lent her head on Jack’s shoulder as she held Sydney’s hand, despite the circumstances it was nice being in a car with the two of them.
“I think we have company.” Zena said from the front and Sydney turned in her seat to look behind them.
“Black van; three cars behind on the left.” Zena said looking in the mirror.
Sydney and Jack both turned to look; Sydney saw a driver and a passenger but couldn’t make out more then that.
“They’ve been behind us since the hospital.” Zena said flicking her gaze into the mirror to look at Jack.
“Loose them.” He nodded and she smiled back.
“With pleasure.” Zena suddenly spun the wheel and went over three lines of traffic to race down a side street.
Irina was slammed against Sydney who caught her mother and held her gently, “Mom! Are you alright?” Sydney asked worriedly and Irina smiled, “No harm done.” She winced but Jack could see the taunt look on her face and knew she was putting on a brave face.
“Your people are very persistent Mr Bristow, they’re right behind us.” Zena said and Jack turned to look.
“Do you have anything other then that tranquilizer?” Jack asked as Irina caught her breath and Sydney ran her hand over her mothers head and held her gently.
“Centre console.” Zena said turning the wheel again as they hit main stream traffic, she weaved them through other cars as the black van sped out behind them and squealed as it braked and turned to pursue them.
Jack leaned forward and pulled it back to find a 9mm hidden in there, he pulled it out, flicked off the safety and wound down his window, reached out and fired back at them.
Zena turned the wheel again and sped around a set of traffic lights as they changed colour; four cars collided with each other as they screamed passed, the black van almost flipped over trying to follow them at brake neck speeds.
“Zena, I’d like to get to the plane in one piece.” Irina winced.
“Yes Ms Derevko.” Zena smiled and slammed on the brakes, spun the wheel and they were facing their pursuers. She gunned the engine and shot straight at the black van, Jack had pulled himself inside when Zena had pulled her little manoeuvre and now he leaned out of the window again to fire at the oncoming vehicle.
The other car swerved when they realized the oncoming SUV wasn’t going to change direction and Jack fired at the tires, blowing out two of them as they sped past.
“Nicely done.” He complimented Zena who smiled.
“Lots of practise as a kid.” She grinned as they sped towards the air port.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Sir, Jack Bristow was reportedly at a hospital in Rome, he checked in a woman with a gunshot wound.”
“Do we know who she is yet?”
“We were able to get this photo from the security feeds.” The assistant threw down some photos and Lindsey smiled maliciously, he knew it.
“Irina Derevko, well Jack it seems you’ve been playing both sides of the fence.” Robert picked the picture up and saw the frantic look on Bristow’s face.
“Did our teams pick them up?” he demanded.
“No sir, he left the hospital with three women, the one from the photo and two others. The cameras were taken off line and our team couldn’t get a proper angle on their faces to make an id.”
“So where the hell is he now?” he stood up and glared at the assistant.
“They, they lost him sir.”
Robert shook his head and scrunched up the photo in his hand, “They’ll be looking for a way out of Rome, stop all out going flights and trains. Anything that leaves Rome on wheels or wings is to be halted until inspection teams have gone through them.”
“Yes sir.”
“I want Jack Bristow and that murdering harpy wife of his in custody by dawn!”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Zena drove through a gate and onto the tarmac of a private air port; small bi planes were lined up not far away and on the run way sat a plane waiting for them.
“Your chariot Ms Derevko.” Zena smiled driving right out onto the run way.
Irina smiled and leaned forward to touch Zena’s shoulder, “Thank you Zena, for everything.”
“It is my pleasure Ms Derevko.” Zena smiled back as Sydney and Jack pushed open their doors and Irina slid over the seat gently and Jack helped her to the ground.
“Are you alright?” he asked softly.
“I’ve had worse… and I’ve been better.” She smiled.
Jack nodded and let her go as Sydney walked around the car to join them looking smaller and thinner then either could remember as they shivered with a chill that swept the open area.
“You should all board the plane now.” Zena said looking at them all.
“What about you?” Sydney asked.
“I’m leaving on a different flight.” She smiled but it was short lived when the sounds of sirens suddenly blared across the tarmac and all of them turned to the gate.
A dark car was pulling in with a siren blaring and a light in front flashing.
“Irina! Sydney go!!” Jack shoved them towards the plane.
“No Jack, not without you.” Irina grabbed his hand.
Jack looked at her as the car drew closer and Zena jumped back into the drivers seat and gunned the engine, “All of you get on the plane and get the hell out of here!” she shouted and spun the car to face the oncoming vehicle.
Irina grabbed Sydney and pulled her behind a baggage carrier, Jack joined them a moment later after using the last of the rounds in his weapon.
Zena drove the SUV right at the oncoming car, she grabbed up a second 9mm she kept hidden under the drivers seat and dove clear as they collided head on, rolling and cursing as she hit the bitumen.
She rolled and shook her head, staggered to her feet and turned to the wreckage as two people crawled out.
She raised her weapon and fired at the petrol tank as one of them spotted her and pulled his own trigger.
The car exploded into a huge fire ball as Zena hit the tarmac, blood staining the front of her shirt.
Authors Note: The Woman who comes to help them Zena, her name is Pronounced Zen-a not Zeena like the warrior princess.
