Why we're going free

Opera has removed the banners, found within our browser, and the licensing fee. Opera's growth, due to tremendous worldwide customer support, has made today's milestone an achievable goal

a safer alternative to Internet Explorer, although more difficult to learn to use, going free will perhaps persuade more people browsing to have a look at what other alternatives are out there.

Well, it looks like Opera might not be the 'alternative' browser of choice for some after this week.

The Norwegian company that developed the Opera browser has sold the browser related part of its business operations to a Chinese security firm. I've got a funny feeling that some companies will now be blocking installations of it.
