Sci-Fi Paul

Just watched this one yesterday. It had some funny parts, true. Some other parts though could have been tweaked a bit. Was a bit of a surprise to see Jason Bateman in there as it is not his usual kind of work he does.

On paper it would have seemed to be a great movie, with Simon Pegg & Seth Rogen voicing the alien, but, at times, it seemed to be lampooning the genre more than laughing along with it.

I'll watch it again but for now I give it a first impression rating of 3-out-of-5 stars.

There may be a bit of the old Atlantic Divide influencing opinion on this one :) A lot of the jokes were very British, and the Americans portrayed in the film were highly stereotypical.

Just saw the trailer and from what I've seen it seems really funny. I'm going to give it a try and see the whole. I'll a better opinion once I've seen it but so far it seems comically entertaining.

I'm actually quite familiar with Pegg's UK work and the dry UK humor that is usually prevalent over US slapstick humor. I liked the premise, liked the actors, liked the special effects (after a while you stop thinking of Paul as being a CGI character) and, as noted, did find humor in it. It is just when taken as a whole that there was just something that was a bit 'off' for me with it. I think the phrase 'trying too hard' would apply.

I'll certainly watch this movie, based on the track record of Simon Pegg & Nick Frost teaming up in Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, two of the funniest movies I've seen in recent years. It will be my goal to make sure it is on my Netflix list as soon as I leave this website. I think I added it some time ago, but can't honestly remember right at the moment.

If you liked Pegg in those, catch him in Run, Fatboy, Run as well. In the US it'd be considered as "romcom" (Romantic Comedy) but if you like Pegg's work then you might find it funny as well.

Thanks for the tip, Kevin. I do now remember seeing the trailers for this movie, but I guess I forgot about it. :o

I loved this movie! Too cute

By the way I had to google "IMO". Yeah I am that old and that out of it!

I like the name of the alien in this movie. With a name like Paul, something tells me he's either highly intelligent or at least able to fake it well around the other ETs!:p

I highly disagreed with the few critics I had the displeasure of listening to. They mostly say that it's an ok film, it's a retelling of Spielberg's E.T, disappointed...blah, blah, blah...

I thought it was very well done. The innocent alien named PAUL, although a rude dude, he does have a heart of gold.

And, I liked it better than ET (yes, the movie). There, I said it. ET, had some weird humans around him. I like CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE 3RD KIND.

For me, PAUL was something different, out of the ordinary, a funny and fun film to watch. Definately, not for kids.

I wonder whats next for actors Simon Pegg & Nick Frost?

BTW, I watched the unrated version (3X).  Two thumbs up.
