Religion Pope Francis: Who am I to judge gay people?

Speaking to reporters on a flight back from Brazil, he reaffirmed the Roman Catholic Church's position that homosexual acts were sinful, but homosexual orientation was not.

"If a person is gay and seeks God and has good will, who am I to judge him?"

While I applaud the way this pope is more open-minded than his predecessors, haven't they (catholics and christians in general) been claiming for years that it's a sin to god to lust after someone of the same sex? (Note, I'm not Christian and have no problems with people being gay :D)

Yes the original ideology of Christianity is that same sex relations and lust is a sin. However, some "movements" of the faith are trying to be more open-minded and will just pray for people instead. Catholics have a history with sex abuse so I don't know what to say about that...

Meanwhile, the Westboro Baptist Church is still actively claiming that God hates Gays :P

Granted it's been a long time since I actually read the bible or anything closely related to it. But where does it actually say that god hate gays? I'm pretty sure what it does say however is that god loves all his children.

I think it depends which version you read. The King James version, for example, was rewritten to change "thou shalt not allow a poisoner to live" to "though shalt not suffer a witch to live", which then justified the whole Inquisition, I suppose. On a similar note, I fully expect changes or misinterpretations to have been made relating to homosexuality.

Which once again shows that religions overall is often misinterpreted on purpose by the leaders of respective faith, to suit their needs.

I don't hate religion, I just hate the people behind it. - Me, 2013 ^_^

The same book in the Bible that says laying with another man is a sin also says similarly of mixed fabric, round haircuts, and tattoos, and yet Christians have no problems with any of those, so to be frank, I'm not concerned with what religious people think.

Religion, particularly in the western world where we're far more liberal, seems to be struggling with it's antiquated views on things. It seems as though the Bible is being interpreted differently to suit the modern world, in some ways. Things like that left open to interpretation is dangerous, and a different topic entirely.

On the other hand, a very good friend of mine is a Christian, and has repeatedly told me that God loves all unconditionally, and celebrates differences in people. I remain open minded.
