~Part 24~

Flashback

Sydney went to the hospital to have a serious talk with her father before her meeting with Sloane. She needed to tell him that they’d decided to go with another investor than Arvin Sloane.

“Dad, Mom, Vaughn and I feel that this deal with Sloane goes against all the best interest of the hotel….”She said as Jack raised his eyebrow in confusion, “Beside we found a new investor. Have you ever heard of Marshall Flinkman of Flinkman industries?”

“Of course I have.” Jack replied.” He’s this Texas who made it big in the computer industry. Last time I’ve checked, he was listed as number five on the Forbes 500 list.”

“Exactly.” Sydney replied, enthusiastically.

“Well, I’ve talked to him last night about our plans to expand the hotel and he said that we should send him the proposal as soon as possible so that he would have his lawyers study it and then come back to us with a figure. He was very interested in the idea of investing in this hotel .”

“What about Sloane?” Jack asked. “Do you dislike him that much?”

“That man gives me the creeps and for what I’d gathered at the party, he had an hidden agenda about the whole deal. The fact that he had my ex-boyfriend dealing for him didn’t help his cause. Mom explained your history with Sloane and what he did to you. Dad, I don’t understand why you would trust him again…after what he did to you, to this family.”

Taking her hand in his, “Sydney, I thought that I was doing a good thing trusting Sloane into investing in this hotel. I didn’t think he would dare double-cross me again…beside he owed me for what he did but I left you in charge and since you and your mother feel so strongly against having him on board, then so be it. We’ll find someone else. You have my full confidence on managing this hotel. After all, it‘s going to be yours eventually.”

“Thanks, Dad.”

End of Flashback

Later that morning, Sydney was in the restaurant enjoying breakfast with her mother and sister when Sloane and Noah walked in.

Sydney resisted a chuckled when she saw the black eye on Noah’s face.

“Ladies.” Sloane said as he and Noah took a seat beside Nadia at the table.

“Mr. Sloane, Let me be brief. “ Sydney said. “We’ve talked this over and we’ve asked you here this morning to tell you that the deal is off.”

“Are you out of your mind?” Sloane asked, dumbfounded. “We’re talking about millions of dollars here.”

“We know but we found another investor willing to invest in our hotel…and we feel that this person’s motives are better suited for what we want to accomplish here. You see, Mr. Sloane, this hotel means a lot to my family. I want to be able to bring my children here and tell them that this will there’s someday. I also want to tell them that selling your dreams short is never an option. We feel that letting you invest in this hotel is like selling our soul to the devil…I think that what happened in the past between you and father is a good indication of what could happen again if we’d decided to do business with you. I’m sorry that we made you come all the way here but if you don’t mind, I would like for you to leave these premises as soon as possible.”

“I’m sorry you feel this way, Sydney. Contrary to what you all think of me, I’m not the monster you’ve pictured me to be. I’m also sorry to see that water under the bridge hasn’t heal old wounds for you to forgive me for my past mistakes. I wish you all the best. And as for selling your dreams short, Sydney. You should know that in business, sometimes you have to sacrifice some of your ideas to benefit the good of the cause.”

“Not if the price is too high.” Sydney replied.

“Very well, then.” Sloane said as he stood up and bid them farewell.

“That wasn’t as unpleasant as I thought it would be.” Sydney sighed, relieve that this was all over.

“Oh, I almost forgot, your father is coming home today.” Irina smiled, as she squeezed Sydney’s hand. “Your father and I are so proud of you.”

“Thanks, Mom.” Sydney smiled.

“I have to go. Have fun shopping. “Irina said before leaving her two daughters alone.

“Okay, Sis.” Nadia smiled as she also got up from her chair. “Let’s go find your perfect wedding dress.”

“Okay. “ Sydney replied, enthusiastically.

In the meantime, Vaughn and Weiss are standing in the driveway of a beautiful house as they are waiting for the realtor to show up.

“What are we doing here?” Weiss asked.

“I’m buying this place for Sydney.” Vaughn smiled. “Yeah, it’s my wedding present to her. Think she’s gonna like it?”

“You weren’t kidding when you asked her to think big. “Weiss said, looking at the house. “This place is huge.”

“Five bedrooms, 2 baths , large family room and kitchen but what sold me on the place, was the view. It’s absolutely spectacular.”

“I’m sorry I’m late, Mr. Vaughn. “ Marcus Dixon said as he stepped out of his car. “I had a family emergency….my son Steven broke his arm at football practice.”

“How awful. Is he alright?” Vaughn asked as Marcus nodded.

“That’s alright, we’ve just got here ourselves.” Weiss added with a smile.

“Great. Marcus smiled. You wanted to see the house one last time before we sign the papers?”

“Why not?” Vaughn smiled. “It will give you a chance to see the place. “He said to Weiss.

“Let’s go.” Marcus Dixon said as he took his keys and unlocked the door and let Vaughn and Weiss enter first.

“As requested, we change the appliances to stainless steel and we also took down those awful curtains that you hated so much.”

“Wow, this place is gorgeous.” Weiss said, looking around the place.

“Think Syd will like it?” Vaughn asked.

“Is she doesn’t, I’ll move in with you.” Weiss teased.

“That’s a scary thought.” Vaughn laughed.

“So, are you ready to sign?” Marcus Dixon asked after the two men went around the house one last time.

“Alright, let’s do it.” Vaughn said as he took the pen into his hand and signed the paper. Once he was done, he couldn’t help but smile.

“I can’t believe, I own this place.” he said excitedly, looking around at all the open space and couldn’t wait for Sydney to see it and later on, watching their children play here.

“Congratulations.” Dixon smiled. “hope you and Mrs. Vaughn are very happy here.”

“We will be“ he smiled “And thank you for everything.” Vaughn said as the two men shook hands.

“My pleasure and if you need anything, please don’t hesitate to call. Here are your keys and good luck.” He said , giving Vaughn the keys to the house before leaving them alone in the house.

Sydney and Nadia have been shopping all afternoon and were about to give up when Sydney saw the most beautiful dress she ever seen in her life. It was simple but it had her name written all over it.

“What do you think?” Sydney asked as she took the dress in her hands.

“I love it.” Nadia smiled.” Why don’t you go try it on. See if it fits.”

“Okay.” Sydney answered enthusiastically as she entered the dressing room while Nadia was still looking for a bridesmaid’s dress.

“Hey, Syd, since you’re getting married on Valentine’s Day, does that mean I have to wear something red?” Nadia asked, browsing around.

Sydney laughed.” No, just wear something that screams romance.”

“I don’t think that will be a problem, after all, we’re in a bridal shop. Couldn’t scream romance louder if they tried.”

“Pick something, please.” Sydney begged. “We need to get back to the hotel before dinner.

“Alright! Alright!” Nadia said as she spotted a little pink dress that reminded her of the dress she was supposed to wear on her blind date with Eric. She excitedly picked it up in her hands and started looking at it and smiled before rushing to the dressing room to try it on.

“Syd, I think I found it. What about you?” Nadia asked, then turned around to see Sydney coming out of the dressing room.

“Well?” Sydney asked, twirling around as Nadia had tears in her eyes.

“Syd…you look…absolutely beautiful.”

“Yeah?” Sydney asked.

“Yeah.”

“Okay, because I totally love it.” Sydney said, looking at her reflection in the floor length mirror.

After a few minutes, the two sisters had bought their dresses and were making their way back to the hotel, singing along with the radio and beaming with joy that in a few minutes, they would be reunited with their men.

Epilogue

Valentine’s Day

Vaughn was in a room in the back of the church, waiting for the ceremony to start. He hadn’t seen Sydney in the last twenty-four hours and couldn’t wait to be reunited with her.

“Will you stop pacing, you’ll make a hole in the carpet. “Weiss warned him.

“Do you know if Sydney is here yet?” Vaughn asked, nervously. “Has anyone seen her? Talk to her?”

“Would you relax.” Weiss said, putting his hands on Vaughn’s shoulders. “I’ll go check. You stay here.” Weiss ordered as Vaughn nodded

While Weiss was gone, Vaughn was pacing around the room again, trying to remember the vows he had written the night before. Hell, he couldn’t remember one thing except it started by him saying how much he loved her. He wiped the sweat off his brow and decided to forget trying to remember his stupid vows and talk to her from the heart.

“She’s here.” Weiss announced as he came in and laughed at seeing Vaughn so nervous.

“Why are you so nervous? You guys are already married.” Weiss commented and Vaughn laughed.

“I know that but the last time we did this, it didn’t so well. This time, I want everything to be perfect.”

“It will be.” Weiss reassured him. “Come on, let’s get you two married…again.” Weiss said, smiling at his best friend.

Jack was sitting in the pew and observing Nadia and Weiss talking intimately in the back of the church before the ceremony started.

“I think we’ll be planning another wedding soon, Jack.” Irina whispered.

“What actually happened when I was in the hospital?” Jack groaned. “It seemed they all waited for me to have a heart attack before they hooked up.”

“Oh, don’t be such a grouch.” she smiled at her husband. “You couldn’t stop them from falling in love the same way my father couldn’t stop us. They‘re happy, that‘s all that matters, right?”

“I guess. As long as they’re happy.”

The ceremony went without a hitch. Even Jack shed a few tears at seeing his oldest daughter united her destiny to the man she loves. After the reception, Vaughn pulled Sydney aside, saying to her that it was time for her surprise. And then, he handed her a blindfold.

“It is part of my surprise?” She asked as he smiled. “Huh! Huh!” No peeking!” He warned her.

He escorted to the car and drove away. After what seemed like a long time, due to Vaughn driving around in a circle for the last fifteen minute. He finally pulled up in front of the house.

“Vaughn, where are we?” She asked, giggling away as he took her hand and helped her out of the car.

“You’ll see.” He said, coming behind her and wrapping his arms around her waist as he whispered.

“Remember I told you to think big?” He asked. She nodded.

“Yeah. “Sydney smiled.

“Well, take out the blindfold and see for yourself.” he smiled.

She did and gasped when she saw the beautiful house standing in front of them. She quickly turned in his arms and pulled her arms around his neck as he tightened his hands on her waist.

“You bought us a house?” She asked, smiling at him.

“I did.” he replied, smiling back at her.

“This is amazing!” she beamed with happiness.

“No, you’re the one who’s amazing.” He said, kissing her lips.

“Want to see the inside?” He asked as she nodded. They raced hand in hand toward the front door. He opened the door and scooped Sydney in his arms and closed the door behind him with his foot.

1 year later

“Syd.” Vaughn called out to her from one of the upstairs bedrooms.

“Yeah?” She asked, rubbing her swollen stomach.

“I’m finished.” He said, proudly as he looked around the nursery.

Sydney slowly made her way to the nursery and smiled when she saw that Vaughn had finally put the crib together. He even added a pink bear in one of the corners of the crib and make sure their baby girl had everything she needed and more.

“What do you think?” He said, wrapping his arms around her large stomach.

“ Think our baby girl gonna like sleeping here?” He asked, kissing the back of her neck.

“Honey, that’s absolutely beautiful.” she said, looking at the pink and yellow rosebuds on the wallpaper. The sheer white curtains in the window , white furniture and a rocking chair for those long nights singing their angel to sleep. In the opposite side of the room on several shelves, were rows of stuff animals that Vaughn , Weiss and Nadia kept buying for the baby.

Sydney sat in the rocking chair and looked at her husband’ s smiling face and smiled. “She’s gonna be the luckiest little girl in the world to have you as her father.”

“No, I’m the lucky one.”
