Question about GPA

okay my friend and I are having an argument, we want to know what the GPAs are percentage wise. Like what's a 4.0 GPA. We realize that they vary from school to school but... what's your schools standards??!! this is driving both of us insane! :lol:

I've been out of college since '98 but I'm pretty sure a good estimate for most schools would be 4.0 = A, 3.0 = B, 2.0 = C, 1.0 = D and anything less is failing. I'm sorry I cannot exactly remember my university's (Slippery Rock) scale.

right. a 4.3 is an a+ at my hebrew school...but then at my highschool we do it on a scale of 1 to 11...
11-A
10-A-
9-B+
8-B

and so on...its a little weird, but for example your GPA could be 9.4.

I'll share my school's grading system and my thoughts again :D

At my school,
4.0 = A= 90% and above
3.0 = B = 80% - 89%
2.0 = C = 70% - 79%
1.0 = D = 65% - 69%
0.0 = F = 64% and below

In honors classes, an extra point is given for C's and above (5.0 = A, 4.0 = B, 3.0 = C)

There are no "in betweens." I know some schools have like 3.2 for a high B, 3.5 for a low A, etc. But any A range is a 4.0, any B range is a 3.0, and so on. For example, if a person got 90% in every class and another got 100% in every class, they would still have the same GPA of 4.0. The only time decimals come up is when getting the average combined GPA of different classes. For example, someone with 3 B's and 3 A's would have a 3.5.

Percentages can be calculated into GPAs, but there is no exact way of conversion to reverse it. But my estimations are:

above 4.0 = A+ = 100% and above (extra credit, honors classes, whatever)
4.0 = A ~ 96 (middle A)
3.6 = A- ~ 92 (low A)
3.3 = B+ ~ 88 (high B)
3.0 = B ~ 85 (middle B)
2.6 = B- ~ 81 (low B)
and so on.

From Canada to US... the percentage becomes different. Because in Ontario we used percent. But it's not the same, I don't think it's possible to get above 92 in a course, other than math. So it's different, I saw it at my councellor's office one day. I can't remember what it was exactly. I know I think 90=A+. In Ontario, a 90 is an A+. An 85+ is an A.

I think at my college it's:
4.0 - Straight A's
3.5 - A / B average
3.0 - B's
2.5 - 3.0 - C's
2.5 and below: D's and F's
I THINK thats what it is but I can't really figure it out. *scrathes head*

GPA is the most confusing thing I've ever seen! In my school, in Ontario, we use percentages. Like, if you get an A+, you've gotten somewhere in the 90s. Or levels, where level one is a fail, level two is below standard, level three is at standard, and level four is above standard. I've never in my life seen or understood GPAs. I got told once that you basically divide your percent by twenty-five, but then how can people get over 4.0? That's like getting over 100%! It's too confusing for me. :thinking:

Just to clarify: I'm stupid. :blush: Could somebody please explain GPAs to me?
