Quests

Okay. Since I'm a Quest GM, I would like to hear from you guys about what kinds of quests YOU would actually ENJOY, so I can (try to) maximize the fun level of the quests I make. I know not everyone will find every single quest I make fun, but as long as someone finds each of them fun, I did a good job right? :D

First off, how serious would you want your quests? Would you want them to have elements of silliness or do you want them to be EXTREMELY SERIOUS!!! :P

Would you want some quests to be particularly long, or short? I know some people would enjoy a few short quests here and there for when they absolutely have to get off the computer soon (damn you mom!)..

What kinds of quests have you found to be the most fun in the past? Or how about you just tell me the most fun quest you have ever done, what you had to do, how long it took, etc.

And if you have any other input, please oh please tell me!

the most fun quest i ever did had to be my epic quest in EQOA was pretty long and you could solo half of it and then the 2nd half you needed a group and then the last part you needed like a raid group good times so much fun.. and at the end you got to pick between your path spell and 2 sets of weapons it was worth everything .. and all quest shouldnt be extreamly serious IMO i think a little funny stuff would be good to brighten up a day, and quest i hate are where you have to run here turn around run back then turn around and run back i really hate those.

First off, don't include quests that are stupid (like a guy wants you to get a book that is 4 feet away from him on another guy, or something dumb like that).

Other than that, I'd say make 3/4 short quests and 1/4 long ones- long quests tend to get boring and repetitive if all the steps are the same (like in WoW they had different storylines but the quest was the same, kill X, kill 10 Y's, get 20 Z's off of Y and bring to me)- if you end up making a long quest, make it something refreshing and fun, not formulaic.

P.S. - Even the most serious of quests' should have some humor in them ;)

Yep yep. Gotta second that notion.

Although. The most fun quest I ever did was the Betrayal Quest of EQ2. So long multipart quest with difficulty progression are good IMO where you have to travel from one NPC to the next in linear fashion. No backtracking.

So you go from NPC-A get quest complete it. Then you are sent to NPC-B to get related quest (more difficult) complete it etc.

Not NPC-A to NPC-B then back to NPC-A for phase 3. With enough NPC's spread out you could simultaneously familiarize the player with Lore, terrain, and geography etc.

Then that whole quest experience becomes a subset of an even larger quest.

WE can call it it quest for the Elanthian Sword of Destiny. Which is royally encased in my sig at the moment LOL!

I'd like to see something like Droughtmans (sp) in DR. You know the one Div. For those of you that don't, it's a maze where players compete to find a special key and make it out of the maze first. Along the way you can find coins (perhaps items too, not sure though). Only one person can win the race, but I see no reason why people could not run it over and over until they win. Also, people not running the race could still watch the race and make bets on who would win.

In DR I think they had a bracket system set up like the NCAA tourny. So you could have many winners, but only one grand champ!

PvP doesn't have to be about killing other players, competition can take many forms.

As far a length goes I would love the idea of having a quest that takes me through a long stretch of time. Very similar to what thaos has posted. It brings the person through the various parts of the world; cities, dungeons, important npcs and allows me to encounter new places and new mobs. With that I would enjoy it to be broken up meaning, that I don't have to play for an hour or more to get something accomplished. If I logged in for say 30 mins on my lunch break I could still get something done.

The comb. of long, short, medium quests should be divided somewhat evenly imo. If a quest takes me oh about 2 hours to complete great. If it takes me 30 days to complete great. Just don't make it go kill mob A 300x to get 100 hides to bring back to get x amount of money. Really strive to make it meaningful, let me feel like im changing the world around me and not just doing it for xp or money, incorporate the lore so that it makes me want to read what an npc has to say not just to find my next loc to complete the quest.

The most fun in a quest I ever had was in morrowind when you started on your long journey doing the blades' quests. It incorporated the lore and had you traveling all accross the country to different areas and learning about the past of morrowind and the nevarre(sp). I could spend 30 mins and get partway done in a section of the quests but the entire quests took me through the course of the game. Its what really made it one of my all time favorite games.

Well, first off, I think most of the quests should have at least some silly elements about them. Which is, ya know, not to say they should be ridiculous, just, ya know... Oh, and I like a good mix of short and long missions. I like to be able to pick and choose, and, since time is rarely an issue for me, or's normally just how focused I feel. Sometimes I'm very, uh... not-easy-to-focus... I lose words too much...

Oh, and about the best quest I've ever done?... I'd have to say it was just one of the missions in CoH. It was very standard, and was really only awesome because of the people I was grouped with. A lot of strategy was used, and the enemies rarely, if ever, got to us. When they did, we debilitated them, then systematicly destroyed them. Yeah, that was fun... So, I guess what I mean is, strategy is one of the best things for me... Ok, well, the strategy in the aforementioned quest was mostly centered around character abilities, so... Still, ledges and stuff are important. Oh, and if trees are climbable... Well, that'd just plain kick ass. Still, since I don't know about that...

Ok, alternate solutions are awesome. I know it's been said that Hero's Journey would include things like this, and about that I am happy...

Oh, about the actual quests?... Arg! I suck at this... I don't really have a problem with the "Go here, enter lair, eliminate threat." type quests, but I suck when it comes to coming up with something original... Sorry I couldn't be, like, you know... helpful, or interesting, or anything...

I'd like to see something different that makes use of the interactive environments pretty much at every corner.
Also, I think it'd be fun if some of the instances would change course suddenly. Example..
If a pair of players both had ROUGE as their primary.. Have some sort of 'lore based' law enforcement or bounty hunter NPC accuse them of something and suddenly attack.
Other than that, get inspired by the Indiana Jones films please. Lots of mazes.. I'm sick of liner dungeons.

There should be both serious and off-beat quests and a mixture of the two. Just don't make a quest all serious then at the end have "the reason they went mad is because of....balloons?". Twists are good...if they make since or have some sort of connection to the story arch.

I'd really like to see some serious quests all the way through though. I already know the devs can do 'funny' from there dev reports.

OH and don't have timed quests thats clock goes down when you log off...lost many a nights sleep because of those ...

Life has serious moments and silly ones. I think quests should reflect that.

I think it would be fun if there were quests/dungeons that required two people instead of a full party.

I would love it if some of the really old RPG maps from the 80's were incorporated into HJ. As an example, I would love to do Werdna's dungeon from the original Wizardry again.

It would be cool if to find a really unique quest, I was given a hint in the form of a riddle that led me to the quest giver.

In WoW, there was one series of quests that culminated in a battle in the main human city Stormwind. Once the prereq's were complete, you went to the entrance of the city, talked to a guard, who then escorted you through the city on horseback. It was cool as the PCs who hadn't gone through the particular quest yet would follow our group to that final battle.

I want some quests that ultimately boil down to where the Hero has to choose from two evils.

I.e.
You have two townsfolk trapped in an impenetrable cage of dooooooom. The sentient cage tells you this, "You may choose which to save. The one you don't save will be killed. If you save neither, they will both be killed."

I also want to see some interesting riddles.

E.g.
You are sentenced to death for some various crimes that you may or may not have committed. The King gives you a chance to choose your fate. He says, "Tell me something. If it is true, I'll kill you with the guillotine. If it is false, I will kill you with a firing squad of archers."

The two ways to save yourself, is to somehow escape, or say, "You will kill me with a firing squad of archers." For if he is going to, the statement is true, and he must kill you with the guillotine. But if he does that, the statement is no longer true and he must kill you with a firing squad. But then the statement becomes true again. Thus leading to a never-ending loop, and guaranteeing your survival.

I would like to see some quests with material rewards that where a bit random. Meaning that there would be maybe a chance, 1 of 6, of receiving a specific item.

Bring the looted skin of some rare beast to a merchant in town and you might receive:

1. Leather wiggit skin Shield.
2. Leather wiggit skin Helm.
3. Leather wiggit skin gloves.
4. Leather wiggit skin boots.
5. Leather wiggit skin leggings.
6. Leather wiggit skin breastplate.

Bing the looted scale of some rare beast to a merchant in town and you might receive:

1. Scaled armor shield.
2. Scaled armor Helm.
3. Scaled armor gloves.
4. Scaled armor boots.
5. Scaled armor leggings.
6. Scaled armor breastplate.

Add in a bit more randomness and have the merchant fail to create anything at all or maybe create something with a special bonus! The better or more rare the beast the better the gear. Perhaps a creature that is 'evil' would have a certain bonus as opposed to 'good' creature. This type of random quest could be 'rised and re-used' every 5 levels or so that that adventures could upgrade their gear.

Quest, my favourite subject.

Personally i feel quests have so much potential but they are usually underused in games. I would like to see lots of quests, whether they are silly or serious makes no difference to me.

Personally i am a huge fan of chain quests, quests that have 6 or 7 links, even quests that span across 5, 10, 20 levels. I reallly think class/race quests are a must. I enjoyed the artifact quests in final fantasy, getting gear and items specifically related to the lore and background of your class or race is something i love doing, and will dofrom start to finish just because of what it is. The only thing i would change are these quests being restricted to max level,i would prefere them spread out across your career with different rewards and such.

Faction quests are somthing that can be great as well, as long as they arent as lame as they were in warcraft, majority of it killing X mob until you hit that faction rank, then you move on. I am sure, every faction has a goal, there should be quests that actually relate to furthering their goals, choosing a faction should mean something. For example, if red army hates blue army, you should be able to do a series of tasks for either army, move up in the ranks with said army, but drop standing with the other factions involved.

I would love to see timed quests, anything ranging from delivery quests with twists, chances of ambush and whatnot, from quests that require you to defeat a certain person under a time limit. Another thing that would be awesome are quests that have varying endings, endings that are triggered by chance and not predictable, say all quest have a chance of having their outcome completlychange.

For example, You are asked to deliver a package from one person to another, but the quest has multiple outcomes -

first = you run from point a to b with no problems, deiliver quest, recieve reward.

second = you run frompoint a to b,but you are attacked by an ambush, you defeat ambush, arrive at person B, tell him what happen he gives you a little extra on topof expected rewardfor your trouble.

third = you run from point a tob,but you are attacked and actually defeated by ambush, (a possiblitiy which leads to its own varing outcomes) you return to person B and he scolds you, and asks you to pay for what you lost, or, you return to person B, he is shocked and then redirect you to retrive package by either going back to the spot you were ambushed for counter attacking the group that attacked you by going after them in their hideouts.

These outcomes would all be by chance, and of course related to the type of quest your doing, so each quest would have a chance of having something unexpected happen, and would keep quests fresh and fun to do. Of course, the more challenging the event the more your reward increases. Something as small as a roadblock and a minor detour wouldnt warrent a greater reward but,say you arrive at person B but he isnt there, you find out from a local he has been kidnapped and your quest turns from delivery to rescue, your reward would change because the difficulty just changed.

I am just brainstorming,my thoughts may be a little unfocused, but quests with varying outcomes is what i am getting at,something i have never seen done in an mmo,but i think would be awesomeif it could be pulled off.

How do you guys feel about race and/or class specific quests?

I'm not a big fan of race/class specific things. I've always hated when games say you can't have certain race/class combinations. Like, "Dwarves can't be mages! They're not magically enough!" ...It's annoying. Having race/class specific quests seems similar to me.

It would make sense for some NPCs to respond differently to different races/classes, but... It wouldn't really add anything to the game, and it would be much fun. I wouldn't mind, though, so I guess that's just a "Does it seem like a good idea?" thing. Also, it would most likely delay the release, if it wasn't already implemented, so I can't say that I'd really like it.

Anyway, good question, Div. I don't know why people seem to have ignored it.

I'd like a few silly quests just for the hell of it. I've got an idea for one.

A guy from inside an outhouse: "Oh valiant hero, I have a quest for thee. A curse has been placed upon me by the nefarious villian, Haggard the janitor!!! he hath taken the mystic toilet paper of Muddbuttara to his lair in an attempt of tomfoolery upon me!!! For this, I am bound in this prison of human waste!! Find him, slay him, and return the paper to it's rightful place between my soggy cheeks!!! Onward hero!!!!"

I like cl*** and race specific quests as they usally give you a little lore on each.

I like the puzzle and two people idea for quests too. I'd really like it there was something similar to single player RPGs where there are dungeons that split up your party and each members has to pull certain switchs and such to allow the others to proceed.

Just think...A four man group enters a dungeon and some quasi-elemental comes out and attacks. You start attacking and notice that your attacks only seem to stun the creature without any damage. Your group notices two doors leading off to the side and it's decided two members will stay and fight off the elemental while the other two will split up between the two door ways. The two finally make it to the end of their hallways avoiding traps and small encounters to eventually weaken the elementals defenses, allowing it to be defeated. Heck you could have each area be an instance for a real personalized feel.

Well since class is out.. LoL
I really, really want to see clbutt specific missions. Or at least missions so well designed it'd be different for different folks.
A warrior could brave his way in. A rogue stealth. A wizard will it so.
Race, I don't see why not. I don't see how a human could be as interested in a potted suwari-nip plant as say a certain feral rogue/rogue -;)-....
I don't think it'd ruin anyone's play. If anything it'd perk people into probably 'buying more character slots' or 'upgrading to the next tier' just to see what's up with the different experience.
All races shouldn't play the same, so therefore it's a no brainer to make exclusive content.

Gearknights will probably be really technical? Good with hydralics and stuff. I could see all sorts of elements being no problem for them to figure out, but absolutely lost upon say a warrior healer. A big challenge for a combative rogue. And a real wand snapper for spell slingers.

Diviana you basically hit exactly everything I want in a quest. I love short quests that give you quick-satisfaction, but long-quests that give you big rewards, and a deep story. I love to have funny quests that add humor, yet the serious ones are also a must.

Race specific quests are a must, and same with class specific. Make sure they are involved, and not 'Kill x, and get Y'. Those are ok, if they are every once in awhile, but not constantly like WoW.

My take.

Diviana, if you build me a quest where I can get from Armani to Prada in under 600 skins, I'll...uhm...I'll be busy skinning!

=)
