Sarah's taking another break after she finishes of this tour
we wanted her back in Belgium
April 6, 2005
TORONTO -- Sarah McLachlan is about to pull another disappearing act.
First, the folk-pop songstress with the famously ethereal voice will play the final leg of her current concert tour. But after that, she insists she's going underground. "This is it folks," McLachlan says with a laugh over the phone from the west coast of Vancouver Island, where she was enjoying a few days off this week.
"There are no more tours booked for the next couple of years... I'm going to just go home and have some time off."
The new slate of shows is set to kick off in Victoria next week, with dates scheduled across the United States and Canada.
She's looking forward to getting back on stage, but McLachlan is also candid about the challenge of balancing the tour with the job of raising daughter India, who turns three this this week and accompanies her singing mother on the road.
"Some days I'm really good at it, other days I fall on my face," she says.
"It's tough. It makes for a long day. But I love playing and I love being a mom as well and I'm very lucky that I get to do both."
McLachlan has been out on the road for almost two years now promoting her Grammy-nominated album Afterglow and makes it no secret that she and her husband -- drummer Ashwin Sood -- want to concentrate on expanding their Vancouver-based family.
"Definitely," says the 37-year-old chanteuse.
After bursting onto the scene with 1988's Touch, McLachlan went on to phenomenal success, appearing on the cover of Time magazine and creating the Lilith concert tour, which became a popular showcase for female singer/songwriters.
By 1999, she was ready for a break. The hiatus turned out to be life-changing as the singer dealt with the death of her mother and gave birth to India.
It also rejuvenated her creative spirit -- something McLachlan hopes to do again when she takes time off after the Afterglow tour.
Writing, McLachlan says, "takes such a huge amount of focus and energy" that it's something she doesn't have time for on the road.
What she finally does have time for these days is listening to music for pleasure - thanks to her trusty IPod.
"Quite frankly, it's brought me back to music," she says of the hugely popular mini-jukeboxes.
"I had stopped listening to music for years. I used to listen to my Walkman all the time, and I just got out of the habit.... having the iPod, it's like getting excited about music again. Thinking about old songs I want to put on it... I love listening to it."
The upcoming tour will also be a homecoming, of sorts, when it stops in Halifax on June 1.
McLachlan was born in the East Coast city, but hasn't played there for more than 10 years.
"That's going to be wild. It's been a long time," she says.
"I lived there 18 years -- that's a big part of my life.... It's a beautiful, beautiful part of the world so I am really looking forward to going back there."
