INT. VAN - DAY
TILT UP OFF THE HAND AND ANKLE CUFFS: in the cargo hold of a
government transport van, Jack and Vaughn, shackled, sit,
facing each other.
A long beat. Then:
VAUGHN
You sure that was the best move?
Punching Lindsey in the face?
JACK
His suspicions are too great.
Based on the comments he was
making, it was obvious that you and
I were going to end up here no
matter what we did -- whether I hit
him or not.
(then)
I wasn't about to pass up the
opportunity.
Vaughn looks at him, then looks away, shaking his head barely
at all. Then, another thought:
VAUGHN
We shouldn't have let Sydney go.
Vaughn's sentiment hangs in the air for a beat, then...
JACK
Vaughn.
Vaughn turns. The tone in Jack's voice.
VAUGHN
... What?
JACK
Sydney can no longer be your
primary concern.
VAUGHN
What the hell's that supposed to
mean?
JACK
You have Lauren now.
VAUGHN
For the record, you don't need to
remind me who I'm married to.
Sydney and I worked together for
years, Jack. I was her handler --
I brought her into this agency --
JACK
You can intellectualize the
scenario all you'd like. It's
cheap rationalization -- you know
it, and I know it.
VAUGHN
This is fascinating. Getting
arrested with you. Gives me time
to hear your advice about women,
it's nice--
JACK
I'm not giving you "advice about
women," I wouldn't waste my time.
I'm talking about my daughter.
(beat)
I didn't bring this up to start a
petty fight. The fact is, you and
I have something in common. We've
both suffered through the death of
the woman we loved... only to
discover she was still alive.
(beat)
I know it's hard. But this isn't
about you. And I will not allow my
daughter to become your mistress.
VAUGHN
-- if you think that's where my
concern for Sydney's headed then
you're even more cynical than I
thought--
JACK
(tough as always)
If lightning strikes, Mr. Vaughn.
And you and I get to walk free
again. If you care about my
daughter as you claim to, then push
her away. Be cruel if you have to
- make her despise you. Because
your "kindness"... tortures her. I
can see it. What it does to her.
(beat, grim)
And I won't have it.
Vaughn just stares at Jack -- a crack in Vaughn's armor --

INT. COVENANT SAFE HOUSE - MOSCOW - NIGHT
Dark and windowless. Lazarey sits in a metal CHAIR, his arms
and feet bound. His eyes FLICK nervously at the various
CUTTING TOOLS on a nearby MEDICAL TRAY.
Then the door opens and a GUARD enters in front of Sark, who
pulls a chair up to Lazarey and sits. Face to face with his
father for a long, silent beat. Then:
LAZAREY
Who are you?
He genuinely doesn't know. Which has to kill Sark.
SARK
I'll give you one hint.
(then)
See if you can guess.
(feigns consideration, as
if finding a clue was
hard)
You abandoned me as a child. The
one vague memory I have of you, you
were physically abusive. And later
in life, you left me eight hundred
million dollars.
Lazarey stares at him -- stunned -- and furious:
LAZAREY
-- no--
SARK
Hello, Daddy.
LAZAREY
What is this. You are not grateful
-- your inheritance was not enough?
SARK
I know the truth about you. And
therefore have no remorse, seeing
you like this.
LAZAREY
I was an apparatchik by profession,
but a Romanov by blood -- and so
are you. In part that's why I
staged my death -- to give you the
inheritance that is rightfully
yours.
SARK
That's wonderful spin. But the
inheritance you thought might buy
my affection now finances my
employer. The Covenant.
LAZAREY
Julian... The Covenant... they are
true evil.
SARK
Speaking of which. The man you
were meeting with. What did you
say to him? I need every word.
LAZAREY
You... are pathetic.
Sark stares at him. We can see how his father's words
actually hurt him. But Sark stays focused.
He turns, picks up A BUTANE FLAME. Ignites it and holds the
flame up in front of Lazarey --
SARK
I'll give you a minute. To
remember... exactly what you told
him.
Lazarey -- suddenly afraid of his son -- and for his life --
