No, I read the book while working in Asia in 1989; I think it was a fairly recently published book. The setting of the story was in NYC, in the first part of 21st century. It was a time when the masses of unemployed people were fed kibble behind barbed wire fences in order to allow them to live. The central characters belonged to a rock and roll band that played actual instruments in an era when computers were taking samples of older, deceased artists and creating virtual songs based on their styles/abilities. It was a fascinating book to me at the time and I've been poking around in bookstores for years trying to ascertain the title and author. Many thanks for any help out there.
