Chapter 101
The next morning Michael and Sydney slept in late and were awoken by beams of sun shining in their room and birds chirping outside. Everything was right in the world. Michael had his arm around Sydney’s waist and she snuggled close to him. She awoke somewhat in a daze about the previous night’s events.
She looked at her left hand and saw the beautiful ring Michael had given her. She smiled broadly and sighed a happy sigh.
Michael noticed Sydney admiring her ring. “You like it?” He whispered as he kissed her neck.
“Oh Michael it’s gorgeous but it must have been so expensive.”
“That doesn’t matter as long as you love it.”
“Well I love it.” She smiled and kissed him.
“Good.”
“So how did you pick this out?”
“Well to be honest I had a little help from your sister.” Michael said.
“Nadia knew? For how long?”
“Two days.”
“Wow and she didn’t tell me. I’m impressed.” Sydney laughed.
“Actually everyone knew... kinda.”
“What do you mean everyone?” She asked.
“Well Nadia and Eric... your parents...”
“My parents!” She gasped.
“Well I sorta went and asked your father permission.”
“You did not!!!!!” She gasped.
“I did.”
“Oh my God you are just too cute!” She said.
“Am I? So that earns me some brownie points?” Michael asked.
“Are you kidding me? Red rose pedals everywhere, candles, romantic dinner, and engagement ring – you have so many brownie points. It is highly possible you are the most perfect man ever.” Sydney smiled.
“Awesome.” He said. She kissed him.
“We should go pick up Sam soon.” Sydney said as she looked at the clock.
“Oh no not yet.” Michael said as he squeezed her tighter and began kissing her neck.
“Michael!” She giggled. “Three times wasn’t enough!”
“Are you complaining?” He asked.
“No...” She said.
“Good.” He said. She giggled happily.

Two hour’s later Sydney and Michael went to the Weiss’s to pick up Sam grinning broadly.
“Good morning.” Eric said as he opened the door. Sydney and Michael went inside silently.
“So?!?!?” Nadia prompted them as soon as she saw them.
“We’re engaged.” Sydney shouted.
“YAY!” Nadia screamed and jumped up and hugged her sister. “Ok ok let me see the ring!”
“You already saw it.” Sydney laughed.
“Yes but not ON you!!” Nadia said. Sydney held out her hand and Nadia screamed again. “Woo break out the sunglasses girl! Cuz that is some major bling you got there.”
Everyone laughed. “Nadia you’re so crazy” Sydney said.
“I’m just very excited and happy and...” then Nadia began to cry.
“Aw Nadia.” Sydney said as she hugged her sister.
“No, no I’m ok I’m just really, really happy.” She sobbed.
Sydney looked at Eric who was rolling his eyes. “Come on Nadia let’s go sit down.” Eric said as he led her over to the couch.
“So how’s Sam?” Michael asked.
“Oh she’s fine she’s in the bedroom watching a video.” Eric said.
“Sam come here.” Michael called.
Sam rushed out of the bedroom and jumped in her father’s lap. “Daddy!” She yelled.
“Hi Sam.” Sydney said.
“Mommy! I miss you...” Sam said giving her a hug.
“Look what Mommy got Sam” Nadia sniffed. Sydney pointed out the ring on her finger. Sam looked at it closely.
“Pwetty” She announced.
“Ok Sam you ready to go home?” Michael said. Sam nodded her head. Then Michael and Sydney gathered up her things and left.

“So how do we tell her?” Sydney asked once they were home.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean how do we explain... she won’t understand.” Sydney said.
“Well I guess we just tell her we’re getting married she knows what a wedding is I think...” Michael said. “We’ll just answer any questions she has.”
“Ok. Sam we have something to tell you.” Sydney said. “Your father and I – we’re going to get married; we’re going to have a wedding.”
“Like Nadia?” Sam asked.
“Yes like Nadia. And you get to be the flower girl again.” Sydney said.
Sam smiled. “Why?”
“Why what dear?”
“Why married?” Sam asked.
“Well that’s what you do when you love someone and you want to spend the rest of their life with them. You get married.” Michael said.
“Ok.” Sam said.
“Do you understand?” Michael asked.
Sam nodded. “Can I go play now?”
“Sure,” Michael said. Sam slid off the couch and went over to her toys.
“Do you think she got that?” Sydney asked.
“Who knows she probably got part of it.” Michael shrugged. He put his arm around Sydney who was watching Sam. “Are you happy?” He asked her.
“Of course I am. I’ve never been this happy in my whole life combined.” Sydney smiled.
“Same here.” Michael said as he kissed the top of her head.
Sydney sighed contently and leaned back onto Michael’s chest and admired her ring. “We’re getting married.” She smiled.
Chapter 102
The next morning Sydney felt Michael slip out of bed and go quietly to the bathroom. She shut her eyes and tried to force herself back to sleep but it was no use. But since she didn’t feel like getting out of the warm comfy bed she just laid there and listened to the shower water running.
When Michael came out of the bathroom he went into his closet and all of a sudden a loud crash was heard. Sydney opened one eye and tried to see what happened. Michael noticed her and whispered “Sorry.”
“Nah it’s ok I was already awake.” She said as she stretched. Michael carried a medium size piece of luggage out of his closet and set it on the floor.
“Luggage?” Sydney asked.
“Yeah I have that conference to go to... didn’t I tell you?” Michael asked.
“No.”
“Oh sorry I must have forgotten with all the engagement planning and stuff.”
“That’s ok. When do you leave? And for how long?”
“This afternoon and I’ll be back late tomorrow.” Michael said.
“Oh ok.” Sydney said.

Later that afternoon Sydney brought Sam over to Nadia’s so they could hang out.
“So tell me everything and don’t leave anything out!” Nadia said.
“Everything about what?” Sydney asked.
“The proposal of course!” Nadia said.
“Oh,” Sydney giggled. “Well...” Sydney went on to explain in great detail about the candles and the notes and of course all the rose pedals. Then about the wonderful dinner and dessert and then finally the proposal itself.
“Oh my God that’s so perfect!” Nadia said wiping a tear from her eye.
“I know wasn’t it?” Sydney smiled. “So tell me how you got involved in picking out the ring.”
“Oh well Michael called me and Eric to the jewelry store and we were looking through all these rings and then finally Michael found that one and it was just perfect!”
“Yeah it is..”
“Well it should be for what he paid for it...” Nadia said under her breath.
“What?” Sydney asked.
“um uh what?” Nadia said trying to cover up what she said.
“Nadia Marie Bristow-Weiss you had better tell me how much this ring cost!”
“I don’t wanna.” Nadia said. “Michael will get mad at me.”
“No he won’t because I won’t tell him.”
“Ohhh,” Nadia groaned. “It cost aboutthritythousand” She mumbled.
“What?”
“Somewhere above twenty....”
“Be more specific.” Sydney said slightly annoyed.
“Thirty five thousand.” Nadia sighed. Sydney choked on the water she was drinking.
“THIRTY FIVE THOUSAND!!!!!” She shouted. “Like a three and a five with THREE zeros?!?!?!”
Nadia nodded. “Syd don’t be mad you should have seen Michael; he was so happy that he found a ring he thought you’d love. You do love it right?”
“Well I did... but thirty five thousand dollars... wow...”
“Syd think about it you need this kind of ring for the life you’re going to live?”
“And what life would that be exactly?” Sydney inquired.
“Well you’re going to be the wife of a prominent surgeon with a wealthy family; you’re gong to be a socialite!” Nadia said.
“What? No...” Sydney denied.
“Sydney wake up and smell the money - yes you are!” Nadia shouted.
“Really... I hadn’t thought about that....” Sydney said with concern.
“Don’t worry about it Syd it will be fun! Like playing dress up! You get to wear diamonds and fancy jewelry and pretty dresses and shoes like Jimmie Choo or Manolo Blanicks!!!” Nadia shouted.
“Ok, ok I get it,” Sydney laughed. “You want some shoes.”
“No... but really?!?!” Nadia said excitedly.
“Christmas...” Sydney smiled. Nadia screamed and hugged her tight.

By the time Sydney arrived home Michael had already left. It was the first night they had spent apart since they had begun serious dating. Sydney felt somewhat sad and she missed Michael, but she took that as a good sign.
After she cleaned up dinner she played with Sam before putting her to bed. Then she went into her bedroom. On the bed she found a rose with a note attached. Before reading it she went to the bathroom and changed her clothes and got ready for bed. Then she slipped underneath the covers and read the note.
My dearest Sydney,
You were the first in my life who has ever made me feel this way
I cannot deny – I need you here by my side
Let me take your breath away
It will never be too late to see yourself though my eyes
I can’t until the day I can say

Sydney put the card down beside her and noticed that she had some tears falling down her cheeks. She wiped them away before crawling over to Michael’s side of the bed and clutching his pillow tightly. It smelled like him; like his aftershave and it made her feel very safe.
Not too much later the phone rang.
“Hello?” She answered.
“Hey.” Michael said.
“Hi, how are you?” Sydney said.
“I’m ok... I just wanted to hear your voice before I went to sleep.”
“Aww you’re so sweet.... I found your note.” She told him.
“Did you?”
“Yes it was the sweetest thing I’ve ever read – I love you so much.”
“I love you too... well I should go, bye Sydney.”
“Bye.” She said as she hung up the phone.

Chapter 103
The next day Sydney spent a lot of time with Sam. They went to the grocery store and Sam enjoyed all the attention she got from the other shoppers. Then they came home and ate lunch. Sydney then played with Sam. They played with some of her educational toys that played music and made other noises and were full of lots of color.
They made dinner and then Sydney read Sam some books while they were waiting for Michael to come home. By eight he still wasn’t there.
“Where’s daddy?” Sam asked.
“I don’t know he should be home soon.” Sydney said looking at her watch. “Do you want to watch a video and wait for him?”
“Yay!” Sam shouted. “Big bed?” she asked.
“You want to watch in our room?”
“Pweese!” She begged.
“Ok,” Sydney agreed.
So they dressed in their pjs and climbed onto Sydney and Michael’s bed. Then they began to watch The Little Mermaid, which was Sam’s new favorite movie.
By the time Michael came home around nine thirty they had both fallen asleep. Michael walked quietly into the bedroom and saw them. Sydney was laying on her side of the bed and Sam was laying across the bed with her head on Sydney’s chest and Sydney’s arm around her. Michael smiled at them and walked over and turned off the TV where the movie credits were now playing. He just stood for a moment and stared at how peaceful they were.
Then for the first time, he noticed something he had never seen before. He couldn’t tell whether he was imagining it or not but he saw that Sam and Sydney looked remarkably similar. They both had the same brown eyes and the same tone brown hair. They had the same cheekbones and mouth as well. Michael stared at them some more feeling quite astonished at his discovery but then he shrugged it off.
It’s impossible, he told himself. I just think they look alike because I want them too, he sighed. Then he went and got ready for bed.
When he was finished he came back out and gently picked up Sam who was still asleep and carried her to her crib. He came back to their room and found that Sydney was now awake.
“You’re back.” She smiled.
“Yup.”
“Oh I fell asleep; what time is it?” She asked.
“Almost ten.” Michael said as he slipped in bed beside her and gave her a kiss.
“Oh... did you put Sam in bed?”
“Yes – you guys looked so cute sleeping together.”
Sydney laughed slightly and then curled up beside Michael.
“I’m glad you’re back.” She said.
“Me too.”
