Season 5, Episode 12: Stairway to Heaven

After weeks of wondering why Izzie was seeing and having sex with 'The Ghost of Denny' (her dead fiance), today's show offered a more reasonable explanation.

Izzie has been getting closer to Alec Karev, so she's been trying to convince Denny to go away and leave her alone. Denny tells her that she is a doctor, so she should think like one and figure out what is happening to her.

She comes to the realisation that Denny's saying “I’m here for you” didn’t mean that he was an embodiment of their eternal love, but as a manifestation of her subconscious warning her of something wrong with her health. Once she acknowledged that, Denny disappeared.

While engaged in vigorous sex, Lexie is horrified to hear Marc shriek in agony. We learn that she gave Dr. Sloan a 'penile fracture'.

As Sloan undergoes surgical repair, Lexie's fellow interns joke and wonder aloud about who injured him. Lexie snaps at them for laughing at Sloan's predicament, so they quickly concludes that she knows more than they do and pressure her to tell them. New intern Sadie, who is Meredith's longtime friend, quickly reads Lexie's guilty expression, then heroically takes the blame and shame of causing the 'fracture' through her “twist and shout” move.

Last week's episode introduced us to a little boy in critical need for a life-saving liver and intestine transplant and an injured death-row inmate who is his only match. Dunn is getting medical treatment to enable him to survive to be executed. He wants to donate his organs to the boy, but the child won't survive long enough to wait for the execution. Dr. Shepherd wants to keep him well so that he may be executed.

Meredith later told Dunn that if he bashed his own head in, he'd probably cause enough injury to become brain dead.

Today's episode showed that Dunn was smashing the back of his head against the edge of his bed, but he doesn't die. Meredith tries to convince Yang not call Derek because they need Dunn to die and Dunn wants to die. Christina disagrees with them. Dunn surprisingly announces that he wants to live.

Derek tells Christina that he is about to propose to Meredith. He needs Yang to be there for Meredith. Christina turns him down.

At the OR, Dr. Bailey tries to stop Dr. Shepherd from performing the life saving brain surgery, but Derek tells her that they are doctors, not executioners. Reluctantly, she agrees. Derek saves Dunn.

The Chief finds a brain-dead patient who didn't want to be a donor and tries to convince the wife to donate his organs. She refuses.

When Dunn awakens, he says that he is afraid of death. He asks Meredith to attend his execution because he needs to have a compassionate person to look at as he dies.

The child is close to death, when the Chief announces that he has convinced the widow to donate her husband's organs to the boy. After a few close calls the boy is saved.

Bailey apologises to the Chief for crossing the line of ethical medical behaviour. The Chief replies that he did too.

Yang and Dr. Owen Hunt get closer despite their awkward encounter the previous night.

Lexie visits the recovering Sloan. He tries to send her away, but she curls up next to him and strokes his hair. She tells him that she has a good friend guarding the door so they can be together. We see that it is Sadie guarding the door.

A few days later, Meredith attends Dunn's lethal injection execution. She is met outside by Shepherd. She explains why she had to do what she did and that she attended the execution to be compssionate. She breaks down and says that it was horrible.
