This season has really been a mixed bag. There have been some wonderful Jack moments, including a couple of very touching hugs between Jack and Syd, and some hilarious Syd/Sloane snarkiness. Jack practically owned "Breaking Point," and as a result it's been the best episode of the season so far. I thought I would fall off the couch laughing at his stash of weapons, cash, flak jackets, fatigues, and other assorted items that might come in handy for breaking one's daughter out of a top-secret NSA detention center. And in "The Two," we had the old Sydney back from season 1: Tough, smart, edgy, and non-whiny. I love the way she came back from two years of who-knows-what and just started taking care of business: She stole back a chip that was stolen from the CIA, killing the terrorist who stole it and blowing up his car in the process (he and his buddies were out cruising for chicks -- how funny was that! ); she tore her erstwhile boyfriend a new one for getting married during her absence; and she blackmailed her new boss into ordering her dad released from jail. You go girl.
For the most part , though, this season has been disappointing. I hate torture scenes, and we have had at least one in every episode so far, unless I miss my guess. And lately all we've been getting is someone messing with her brain or torturing her. And apparently there is going to be plenty of both in episode 11. Ugh! I understand that some people aren't bothered by that, but I am. And if the writers were really on top of their game, they would be coming up with new ideas instead of constantly repeating themselves. And don't even get me started on that stupid "brain surgery" storyline! JJ, get yourself a new writing staff pronto! This one too often writes like a bunch of middle schoolers who have had too much caffeine. I have seen better writing in comic books than some of the drivel they have come up with this season.
There are other ideas to explore besides filguring out new ways to brutalize one character or another. Very little has been done to explore the relationship between Jack and Sloane. And we still don't know what Sloane's endgame is (what was in that envelope Lindsey gave to Sloane, anyway?). What about that scar on Syd's abdomen, which she has yet to have checked out by a doctor? And what about "il dire?" It was pretty unsatisfying to have such a big deal made out of that last season and have no payoff better than Sloane telling Jack about it this season.
I hope that better times are ahead for those of us who feel somewhat let down so far this season. I understand that there are some developments coming up that might be promising. I hope so. Right now, I am really watching "Alias" only for Jack and Victor Garber's spot-on portrayal of him. It is not a good sign when only one element of a show really catches your attention.
