Alien Prequel
No official plot yet, but it's said to be a prequel to the first film, in which the crew of a commercial towing ship returning to Earth is awakened and sent to respond to a distress signal from a nearby planetoid. PROJECT DETAILS
 • It's said that the studio is pleased with the new script for a couple reasons -- there are no "expensive set pieces" meaning no big-budgeted action scenes (early estimates on the budget was around $150-million), and it may reach a wider audience with a PG-13 rating.
 • Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof recently turned in a new draft of the script, which the studio is reportedly pleased with and may finally bring the project closer to production.
 • It's said that the main character will once again be a woman.
 • Ridley Scott briefly revealed minor details as to where the story will go for the prequel: "The film will be really tough, really nasty. It's the dark side of the moon. We are talking about gods and engineers. Engineers of space. And were the aliens designed as a form of biological warfare? Or biology that would go in and clean up a planet?"
 • Original designer H.R. Giger will be consulted to create new designs for the creatures in the film. Ridley is interested in possibly creating a new look for the aliens.
 • Director Ridley Scott had this to say about the story: "It's set in 2085, about 30 years before Sigourney [Weaver's character Ellen Ripley]. It's fundamentally about going out to find out 'Who the hell was that Space Jockey?' The guy who was sitting in the chair in the alien vehicle — there was a giant fellow sitting in a seat on what looked to be either a piece of technology or an astronomer's chair. And our man [Tom Skerritt as Captain Dallas] climbs up and says "There's been an explosion in his chest from the inside out — what was that?" I'm basically explaining who that Space Jockey — we call him the Space Jockey — I'm explaining who the space jockeys were." He added... "[The film] is about the discussion of terraforming — taking planets and planetoids and balls of earth and trying to terraform, seed them with the possibilities of future life. "
 • It's said that this will be the first of two prequels that lead up to the events of the first film.
 • This will be in 3D.
 • Keanu Reeves hired writer Jon Spaihts to script the space journey epic Passengers, which apparently got him the meeting with Fox and Scott Free, where he pitched the idea of an Alien prequel that the studio and Scott loved.
 • Originally the film was to be directed by newcommer Carl Rinsch and merely be produced by Ridley Scott, and his brother Tony Scott. However, 20th Century Fox eventually decided to bring back Ridley himself to helm the prequel.
 • Original director Ridley Scott returns.
 • The currently untitled prequel to classic 1979 film Alien.

PROJECT DETAILS
 • Announced back in 2006, development of the project was haulted in 2007 due to the unfortunate events at Virginia Tech and is now believed to be dead or in a state of limbo.
 • Supposedly the film was intended to receive an R rating.
 • It's said that an idea that was quickly brushed off was to have the students possibly part of some sort of juvenile detention system, which was going to be one way to "tone down" the storyline for us apparently squeemish American audiences.
 • The film was going to take place in America (no surprise) and would still deal with high school students.
 • Produced by Roy Lee (The Ring, The Grudge) with Neal Moritz (I Am Legend).
 • New Line Cinema owns the remake rights.
 • The original still hasn't gotten proper US distribution, and many speculate it may have to do with all the controversay surrounding the deaths of high school students, though, no official reason is known.
 • The original film is one of the handful of movies that received a 10/10 rating when it was reviewed on UHM. You can read the review here.
 • A remake of the controversial 2000 Japanese film with the same name.

PROJECT DETAILS
 • Still being developed, the project has run into a couple problems that has halted the progress -- a big budget and a hard-R rating. Producer Gore Verbinski reportedly wants to keep the film edgy and stay true to the fans, and expressed interest in keeping it an R (possibly hard R) rating, and not dumbing it down to PG-13 to appeal to a wider audience. Because of this, Gore is trying to work with director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo to bring the budget down a little to compensate.
 • Spanish Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo also worked on Intacto and 28 Weeks Later.
 • A large factor in why the budget was growing too large was due to Gore Verbinski wanting to do as much as possible "in-camera" using real sets, etc.. and relying less on CGI.
 • Gore Verbinski left the project as director due to the estimated budget ranging over $160-million, causing Universal to halt development. However Gore still remains on board as producer.
 • Universal Pictures will distribute theatrically.
 • Original director Gore Verbinski had passed on directing the fourth Pirates of the Carribean movie to helm this.
 • Written by John Logan (Gladiator, The Avaiator).
 • Based on the hit game with the same name.

 • John Harrison (Clive Barker's Book of Blood) is now scripting.
 • Eli Roth was originally going to direct after finishing Hostel 2, but eventually left the project after a difference in opinion with the producers.

Humpty Dumpty

humptydumpty2_0.thumbnail%203.jpg
Two backwoods brothers, Petus and Pervis Brakk, ambush a landing party of extraterrestrial beings on their swampland property collecting Earth plant samples for study. The brothers kill the males and take the alien female into captivity where they torture and abuse her. They secretly keep her captive for months in their basement cellar. She becomes impregnated with the spawn of one of the sadistic brothers and escapes into the swampland. Before she dies, she gives birth to a monstrous, half-alien, half-human egg-shaped, creature with extraterrestrial powers, HUMPTY DUMPTY.

In the meantime, a smart Southern sheriff becomes suspicious after reports come into his office about a UFO seen by people from the small town. He ultimately solves the case, but not before Humpty has taken crowd-pleasing bloody revenge on the Brakk brothers for their unspeakable acts against his mother.

PROJECT DETAILS
 • Will Smith revealed some potential plot details saying: "...it’s essentially the fall of the last city – the last stand of Manhattan. The movie would be…within the body of the movie D.C. and then Manhattan would fall as the last city. It’s a really cool idea trying to figure it out…there’s a reason why we have to take a small band and we have to get into D.C. So we have to make our way from New York to D.C. and then back to New York."
 • This project is in the very early stages of development, however, it's likely to be put on the fast track since the studio is really looking to continue the franchise, as the previous film had an overall gross of more than $500-mil at the box office.
 • Warner Bros. and Overbrook Entertainment will produce, with Warner Bros. once again distributing.
 • D.B. Weiss is set to to write the script that's based on a detailed outline that was discussed over the past few months by Will Smith, Francis Lawrence and producers Akiva Goldsman and James Lassiter.
 • Original director Francis Lawrence returns along-side star Will Smith.
 • The obvious prequel to the hit 2007 film I Am Legend.

Of course the big news regarding the third Iron Man movie is that Jon Favreau – who directed the previous two instalments – has quit the project. (He of course notified the world of this via Twitter.)
Depending on whom you believe this was either because of Favreau complaining that Marvel wanted to throw too many superheroes and characters into the third movie or that Favreau was getting too expensive for Marvel.
Whatever the case might be fans shouldn’t be too disgusted by the news. Favreau’s departure might be just what the franchise needed. After all, Iron Man 2 came across as a remake of the first movie as the character had to battle yet another version of himself. Time to move the characters and story ahead we say. And, yeah, too many characters will spoil the broth. Look what happened to Spider-man 3 . . .
Anyway, this just might be good news actually. Unless they get Michael Bay to direct Iron Man 3 of course . . .

In Hollywood you’re only as good as your last movie, which is bad news for Peter Jackson. His adaptation of The Lovely Bones may appear to be the sort of drama that shouldn’t cost too much money to make. After all, it is a drama about a girl who is brutally killed by a serial killer and then watches from heaven how her friends and family cope with their grief over her murder.
Only problem is that Jackson spent a fortune on creating a CGI heaven for the movie and the project is said to have cost in excess of $100 million – usually the sort of budget spent on blockbusters. The Lovely Bones is however meant to be a “prestige” project that will attract awards and critical acclaim. Critics however hate the movie with a passion and it is unlikely to win any Oscars for the Bearded One.
So what does this mean? Probably nothing. Will Hollywood still throw huge amounts of cash at the maker of Lord of the Rings? Or will a voice in the back of their heads go, “Listen, didn’t this guy direct The Lovely Bones and doesn’t this whole story sound suspiciously a lot like The Golden Compass, an expensive flop also based on a children’s fantasy novel?
To be honest we’re more excited about Temeraire, the other project Jackson is rumored to be working on right now, which is about an alternate reality in which the Napoleonic Wars were fought by dragon riders. This is something which Jackson’s WETA outfit probably has down right pat now that they have done the effects for James Cameron’s Avatar . . .

Temeraire (TBA)

Starring:
TBA
Directed by: Peter Jackson

U.S. Opening Date: TBA

THEY SAY
Movie directed by Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings, King Kong) based on the Temeraire series of fantasy novels by author Naomi Novik.
The series is set during an alternate history version of the Napoleonic Wars, in which dragons not only exist but are used as a staple of aerial warfare in Asia and Europe. The dragons of the story are portrayed as sentient and intelligent, capable of logical thought and human speech.
The series centers primarily on events involving Temeraire (the titular dragon) and his handler, Will Laurence. The first book of the series centers on how Laurence, formerly a Captain in the Royal Navy, becomes Temeraire's handler, and their early training in preparation for battles against Napoleon's aerial fleet.
The training of Temeraire and Laurence is rushed so that their unit can assist the navy in preventing a French invasion while the veteran dragon units are sent to assist in the Battle of Trafalgar. Accordingly, the British win that engagement, although Horatio Nelson survives, one of the deviations from our history the series takes. Rather than a tactical blunder, Trafalgar turns out to be a Napoleonic ploy to leave Britain vulnerable to the world's first aerial assault . . .
Incidentally, to confuse matters the first book in the series was published as His Majesty's Dragon in the States and as Temeraire in the UK. Since the book’s publication four sequels - Throne of Jade (2006), Black Powder War (2006), Empire of Ivory (2007) and Victory of Eagles (2008) – followed. The author divulged at a book signing that the fantasy / alternate history series will consist of nine books in all. - Source: Wikipedia

WE SAY
Peter Jackson quietly acquired the movie rights to all the Temeraire books – both published and unpublished – in 2006 and went on to direct . . . The Lovely Bones!
However now that Lovely Bones has wrapped up and is set for a December 2009 release date, Internet speculation is rife again that Temeraire is going to be Jackson’s next project as director. That is, if his work as producer on the Rings “prequel” The Hobbit isn’t going to keep him too busy. (The Hobbit by the way is definitely going ahead now that New Line studio has settled its legal issues with the Tolkien estate over the profits for the Lord of the Rings movies.)
Time will tell if Jackson will actually get round to directing Temeraire. But we can easily picture Jackson directing a three-hour long epic about dragons in the Napoleonic era, a sort of Eragon meets Master & Commander. (Or maybe not . . .)

Forever War (TBA)

Starring:
TBA
Director: Ridley Scott

U.S. Opening Date: TBA
THEY SAY
Based on the Hugo and Nebula award-winning novel by Joe Haldeman first published in 1974.
The book tells the story of a conflict between humanity and the alien Taurans. Humans first bumped heads with the Taurans when we began using collapsars to travel the stars. Although the collapsars provide nearly instantaneous travel across vast distances, the relativistic speeds associated with the process means that time passes slower for those aboard ship. For William Mandella, a physics student drafted as a soldier, that means more than 27 years will have passed between his first encounter with the Taurans and his homecoming, though he himself will have aged only a year. When Mandella finds that he can't adjust to Earth after being gone so long from home, he re-enlists, only to find himself shuttled endlessly from battle to battle as the centuries pass.
This will be director Ridley Scott's first science fiction movie in more than a quarter of century. (Blade Runner was in 1982 and Alien in 1979.)

 WE SAY
Despite director Ridley Scott declaring that an adaptation of Aldous Huxley’s novel Brave New World starring Leonardo diCaprio will “definitely be what I do next after Nottingham, the Robin Hood film (with Russell Crowe),” it would seem that he is putting off Brave New World in favor of another sci-fi book, namely Joe Haldeman’s celebrated 1974 novel.
“I first pursued The Forever War 25 years ago, and the book has only grown more timely and relevant since,” Scott said in an interview. “It's a science-fiction epic, a bit of The Odyssey by way of Blade Runner, built upon a brilliant, disorienting premise.”
Scott has got that right. It is an action-packed thought-provoking novel, one of those books that prove that there is more to science fiction than just spaceship battles and droids. Haldeman did military service in Vietnam and the novel is largely held to be a wider metaphor for the alienation that many Vets felt returning to America after the war. In Haldeman’s novel time passes much slower for the protagonist than it does back on Earth, meaning that centuries have passed back on Earth in the few months the novel’s hero spends in space fighting aliens. The culture shock he experiences upon returning to Earth again is profound.
The Forever War is justly considered a modern science fiction classic and deservedly won both the Hugo and Nebula awards. As you might have guessed by now it is definitely one of our favorite novels here at the Sci-Fi Movie Page. The mere thought that Scott – a stunning visualist whose Alien and Blade Runner redefined the genre on screen – actually intends filming it makes us want to literally pee in our pants out of sheer excitement.
However these are early days. Just like Brave New World, Forever War might never get made at all. Even though Fox 2000 has acquired the rights to the novel on behalf of Scott, a writer to adapt a screenplay has yet to be found. No casting has been announced either.
Besides, any Hollywood movie that has to explain Einsteinian relativity to popcorn gulping audiences who merely want to see stuff get blown up real good has got its work cut out for itself. Also, Hollywood execs who has to bankroll it might also blanch at the idea of a depressed central protagonist and the idea of an onscreen future in which homosexuality is the norm because the Earth government is encouraging it so as to prevent overpopulation . . . (There is after all a reason why so few genuinely intelligent sci-fi movies actually get made by Hollywood and unimaginative and derivative dreck such as Eragon and Babylon A.D. do get made.)
In the meantime there is still the novel, and if you haven’t yet read it, then do yourself the favor today. It is a sci-fi classic.

Roland Emmerich will direct a movie based on the Foundation series of novels by Isaac Asimov.
The Foundation novels are a series of tales set so far in the future that Earth is all but forgotten by humans who live in a vast Galactic Empire throughout the galaxy.
Yet all is not well with this empire. Its vast size is crippling to it. In particular, the administrative planet, honeycombed and tunnelled with offices and staff, is vulnerable to attack or breakdown. The only person willing to confront this imminent catastrophe is Hari Seldon, a psychohistorian and mathematician. Seldon can scientifically predict the future, and it doesn't look pretty: a new Dark Age is scheduled to send humanity into barbarism in 500 years.
He concocts a scheme to save the knowledge of the race in an Encyclopedia Galactica. But this project will take generations to complete, and who will take up the torch after him? The first Foundation trilogy (Foundation, Foundation and Empire, Second Foundation) won a Hugo Award in 1965 for "Best All-Time Series". Amazon.com

 WE SAY
There is a certain irony, which Hollywood is probably too dumb to get, in the fact that the director of some of the stupidest science fiction movies ever made (Independence Day! Godzilla!) would adapt one of the smartest science fiction novels ever written!
Anyway, word has it that Sony's Columbia Pictures has won a bidding war for the Isaac Asimov series of Foundation books, beating out Warner Bros. bidding for Alex Proyas to direct and Fox bidding for producer Vince Gerardis, who first worked on developing the film.
Why this sudden bidding war for a batch of novels which basically have been around since the 1940s? We don’t know either. But the whirring sound you hear is no doubt Asimov himself who has been spinning in his grave since 2004 when Hollywood completely missed the point behind his I, Robot stories and screwed them up (sorry: there is no other way to put it).

THEY SAY

Producer Graham King has acquired the film rights to Dan Simmons' Hyperion Cantos books and it will go into production next year for Warner Bros. No news yet on casting, budget, director, etc.
There are in fact four novels in Simmons' series, namely Hyperion (1989), The Fall of Hyperion (1990), Endymion (1996) and The Rise of Endymion (1997).
The plot? It is the 29th century and the universe of the Human Hegemony is under threat. Invasion by the warlike Ousters looms, and the mysterious schemes of the secessionist AI TechnoCore bring chaos ever closer.
On the eve of disaster, with the entire galaxy at war, seven pilgrims set fourth on a final voyage to the legendary Time Tombs on Hyperion, home to the Shrike, a lethal creature, part god and part killing machine, whose powers transcend the limits of time and space. The pilgrims have resolved to die before discovering anything less that the secrets of the universe itself.
Trevor Sands will adapt the first two books in the series into one screenplay.
WE SAY
According to Amazon.com Simmons' books draw on the works of Keats and provide "a uniquely intelligent and literary approach with cutting edge science, compelling characterization and edge-of-your-seat excitement." We couldn't have put it better ourselves.
Along with anything by Ian Banks and Peter F. Hamilton's Night's Dawn trilogy, Simmons' Hyperion Cantos has to count among our favorite sci-fi of the past decade or so. That Hollywood would to change it into a movie is good news as Hollywood tends to neglect good sci-fi novels in favor of, well, felgercarb.
Worrisome though is the mention in the press release that the first two books will be made into one screenplay. Does that mean it's going to be one movie as well? Simmons' books are quite complex and to merely strip two of them down to the running length of one movie would be a dire mistake.
To be honest we've always felt that Simmons' books would make for a great mini- or TV series. Okay, an expensive one, but the only way really to do the books justice.
In the meantime, check out Simmons' book so that come 2010 you can complain about how Hollywood made a mess of them. At 1 700 plus pages you might have finished them if you start right now . . . (don't worry: they're worth every minute, really).

The 2004 sequel Chronicles of Riddick was a bloated mess that wanted to be the new Dune and OD’ed on CGI in the process. Mad Max 4: Fury Road (2012)

Starring:
Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron
Directed by: George Miller

U.S. Opening Date: TBA 2012

THEY SAY
According to the Australian Daily Telegraph, preproduction is to start immediately on Mad Max 4: Fury Road. Filming will take 30 weeks in Sydney, Australia as well as the Outback NSW and will be completed by beginning June 2010.
The entire project will take two-and-a-half years to complete and the movie will most likely be released in summer of 2012.
Rumors had it that Aussie actor Sam Worthington would star in the film alongside Charlize Theron. (Worthington starred in the recent Terminator Salvation. His next two movies are James Cameron’s upcoming Avatar and next year’s Clash of the Titans remake.)
Since then it was announced that British actor Tom Hardy got the role.
Tom Hardy appeared in movies such as Guy Ritchie's RocknRolla, Layer Cake, Bronson and Sucker Punch amongst others. Genre fans will however most likely remember Hardy as Praetor Shinzon, the human clone of Jean-Luc Picard in 2002’s ill-fated Star Trek: Nemesis outing. See article below.)
George Miller who directed the previous Mad Max movies will direct Mad Max 4: Fury Road. The previous movies were Mad Max (1979), Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) – all of them filmed in Australia.
The movie is expected to generate hundreds of jobs for the local Australian movie industry.
Director Miller (also Australian) is expected to produce his Happy Feet sequel in Sydney, Australia).
Mel Gibson turned 53 this year and is probably considered to be old to return as Max although early Internet rumors had it that the sequel will be a case of Son of Mad Max – so maybe there will be a cameo appearance in there for him – who knows?
WE SAY
Why make a new Mad Max movie? The Road Warrior was The. Greatest. Action. Movie. Ever. It can’t be bettered, something sadly illustrated by the last movie in the franchise, namely the lame 1985 Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. We don’t need another sequel!
Well, the good news is that George Miller will direct the new movie (Miller even gave Happy Feet an edge – check out the existential scenes of Happy in zoo captivity and the dancing penguin’s Darwinian struggle for survival). If Miller can refrain from putting in any crappy Tina Turner pop songs things might work out . . . who knows?

Is it Star Trek 2 or Star Trek XII?
Well, considering that the 2008 “reboot” was so blatantly aimed at attracting newcomers to the franchise instead of appealing to old-timers, I’d bet good money that Paramount will settle for Star Trek 2 as a title for this as-yet-untitled sequel to J.J. Abrams’ 2008 Star Trek flick.
(The recent sequel to Rob Zombie’s Halloween remake was titled Halloween II even though there already was a Halloween II made in 1981 and it was actually the 355th Halloween movie to be made . . .)

 (a) Star Trek 2 will get made because it was one of 2008’s biggest (and most unexpected) box office hits, which did good business when positive word of mouth lured non-Trekkies to cinemas to check it out.

Ironically the movie is being filmed in Louisiana . . .

WE SAY
Aaron Eckhart – action hero? It must be the chin . . .
The 40-year-old Eckhart has come a long way since he feared being typecast as a misogynist psychopath in The Company in Men back in 1997. Why, this year he played an, um, vengeful psychopath in The Dark Knight (Two Face).
Anyway, it sounds all very Cloverfield (or Aliens set in L.A. if you’re an older cineaste), but we just looove that title. Very, very B-movie. Sounds like something John Carpenter would have directed in his down-on-his-luck straight-to-video days. Come to think of it, what did happen to Carpenter? Come back, Mr. Carpenter, all is forgiven and we have a script for you!
In case you were wondering what John Carpenter is doing nowadays, he is actually currently working on Scared Straight starring Nicolas Cage (then again, Cage stars in everything nowadays). The movie appears to be a remake of Con Air basically. IMDb.com describes the plot as follows: "As part of the crime-prevention program Scared Straight, a governor's delinquent son is sent to prison for what's to be a short period of time. While behind bars, however, the kid is taken hostage during a riot, forcing a lifer (Cage) to come to his aid." The movie is scheduled for 2009. Carpenter also has two horror movies in the pipeline (obviously), namely LA Gothic (2008) and The Prince (2010).

 WE SAY
Mmmm. Interesting premise. Might just work (we’re just suckers for time travel tales).
Incidentally the movie will be based on a spec script by Chad St. John, Warner Bros. has acquired the rights and has set up the project with Gianni Nunnari (300) at his Hollywood Gang shingle.

 THEY SAY
Towards the end of World War II the staff of SS officer Hans Kammler made a significant breakthrough in anti-gravity.
From a secret base built in the Antarctic, the first Nazi spaceships were launched in late ‘45 to found the military base Schwarze Sonne (Black Sun) on the dark side of the Moon. This base was to build a powerful invasion fleet and return to take over the Earth once the time was right.
Now it’s 2018, the Nazi invasion is on its way and the world is goose-stepping towards its doom.
Iron Sky is a science fiction comedy being produced by Energia Productions, Blind Spot Pictures and Cinet and co-produced by 27 Films. At the moment, the team is finalizing the script, working to gather a top-notch production team, and are looking for second-round financing.

 WE SAY
Nazi invaders from the moon! What’s not to like? We sincerely hope that Messrs. Vuorensola, Hukkanen and Puskala get their second round of financing and get this movie made! We will pay good money to see it!

The Zero Theorem (TBA)

Starring:
Billy Bob Thornton
Director: Terry Gilliam

U.S. Opening Date: TBA

THEY SAY
Based on a screenplay by Pat Rushin, The Zero Theorem is a sci-fi western thriller largely set in a church laboratory. Billy Bob Thornton will be playing an ingenious recluse who, while working on a mysterious project, tries to answer the really big questions of life. Some of the science fiction elements include a virtual psychiatrist that runs on a computer screen; cyber-suits that enable voyages into virtual the soul; a legion of clones that don't appear to be clones after all, if you look at them on DNA level.
 - Source: Planet Origo
 WE SAY
Few Hollywood directors have had a career as frustrating as that of Terry Gilliam whose oeuvre includes quirky and brilliant efforts such as Brazil, Time Bandits and The Fisher King amongst others.
Unfortunately his offbeat sensibilities have brought him into conflict with Hollywood money bosses. Most of his movies are simply too weird for mainstream tastes and they end up being box office disappointments. Also, his most recent efforts (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Brothers Grimm) can be described as “diluted” Gilliam at best. One would like to think that his recent movies are disappointing because of creative interference by nervous suits, but deep down one suspects that Gilliam may have lost his touch altogether.
The Zero Theorem might however prove us wrong. Hopefully.
Insiders who have read the screenplay think that the screenplay is so uncommercial (read: excellent) that it is absolutely amazing that the project is getting made at all!
“I really can’t believe this was given the green light,” writes slashfilm.com. “I’m absolutely ecstatic that it was, but still utterly shocked – the budget must be very reasonable. To put it simply, this was a smart and unpredictable screenplay that will not only require intelligence on the part of everybody in the cast and crew, but the audience will also be expected to switch on and fire all cylinders too. Are they going to be prepared to do that? I think they’ll be thankful for the opportunity.”
So here’s crossing our fingers. Zero Theorem just might be the Terry Gilliam film that we have been hoping for all these years.

Ufos: Fictional and Real

I think it's cool that a big movie company has finally recreated the U.F.O. event that really happened 1942. Reports back then said that a handful of people died because of the falling projectiles that bounced off of the strange object that floated over the city.
B-movie director Ed Wood used that incident as inspiration for his film PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE.
