Sequels / Prequels / Backstories

Tom

An Old Friend
Aside from the never-ending remakes and reboots there also seems to be a never-ending supply of sequels, prequels and unnecessary side/backstory movies. Anything which does well in the box office is now game for multiple takes of the same story.

I mean, look at The Joker (2019).
The Joker was a foe of Batman. Not even a constant foe, but he did reappear in in multiple episodes and in some of the movies but he is a plot device character, not the focus, Batman was the focus.
Part of the Joker threat is how insane he can be. We don't need a backstory explaining how he got that way.
I don't want to know his life story. Its not meant to be the focus of the Batman Universe.
Then you have the Joker's girlfriend, Harley Quinn. I never heard of her before the 1st Suicide Squad and I certainly don't need to learn HER backstory!

So, this thread is about upcoming sequels, prequels and those backstory movies.
Sometimes they can be pretty good, sometimes they are obviously Hollymoney's plan to get richer.
Meanwhile, we public are forced to choose which to watch because they seem to refuse to produce (and release) new films or new films which are based on really good stories.

Some of those ignored stories could support a series of films.
Look at Dune.
Yeah, Dune has a couple of films and a mini-series but they are telling the same story over and over again.
The Dune novel series has many books worth turning into movies yet they focus on one story because we keep settling for the same ole same ole with new faces and better graphics.
I mean, c'mon!

OMG on and on and on
many of these would be better suited to miniseries (maxi-series?) of 10-20 eps (or more) to flesh out the story (if there is any story, not just rehashing)
IIRC MTV did that with Scream. never got to watch it.
they in bidness to make money and recycling usually assures a certain return.

here's a ?: which of these would we like to see a Breaking Bad type teleseries?
I would love to see Batman done that way. similar to the comics; you get a few weeks for the story then move on.

I AM looking forward to the Ghostbusters sequel. trailer looks awesome.
(an example of you mentioned better sfx now)

Unlike many people, I can tolerate sequels as long as they continue the story. Sometimes a prequel can add to the story significantly.
What I can't understand is the side story for insignificant characters. Harley Quinn & the Joker are just two.
Its like creativity is taboo for Hollyweird.

A good example of doing it right, to me, is the Split/Glass set. They used Split to create a universe which is supported by its sequel Glass. The idea has potential to be very interesting if they do it right. Thing is, I doubt they will continue the storyline.

Using Monarch to tie together Legendary's Monsterverse is also brilliant. It opens branches for a wide range of monsters in future installments but the idiots suggested Monarch will be shut down. If Monarch disappears, they're shooting themselves in the foot.

Dark Universe was another brilliant idea. Problem is, they changed the story of The Mummy and people didn't support it. So, they scrap the idea instead of making better movies. Look what they did to The Invisible Man. It wasn't even an invisible man, just high technology and a suit being worn.

There are some I look forward to:
JUSTICE LEAGUE PART TWO
DEUS EX: HUMAN REVOLUTION
GUNSLINGER
PONTYPOOL CHANGES
I want them to make a sequel to Operation Rainfall.
The Tomorrow War 2 (not sure how that could be done?)
Infinite 2
Outside The Wire 2
Brightburn 2
Rim of the World 2
Scarlett 2
Rampage 2
Freaks 2
Deep Rising 2
Boss Level 2
Zathura 2
RED 3
Sputnik 2
Lazarus 2
Space Sweepers 2
Cosmoball 2
Clown 2
Nobody 2
The Relic 2
Guns Akimbo 2
Artemis Fowl 2
Vivarium 2
Primal 2
Little Monsters 2
Deadtectives 2
Us 2
Discarnate 2
The Darkest Minds 2
Tau 2
Spectral 2
The Belko Experiment 2

Just a few but if I were to consider really old movies there are literally hundreds of movies which beg for a sequel.
which of these would we like to see a Breaking Bad type teleseries?
I've never seen Breaking Bad or a teleseries.
Frankly, I don't watch many shows, I like movies best.
Perhaps because they are longer?
I only watch a few TV shows and will not watch them unless I have the entire season I can play in a non-stop playlist (without commercials).
Lately, I haven't been watching any new series.

As for Marvel and that mess, I'll watch them but Marvel movies are lame and uninspired.
I prefer DC over Marvel. I was really, really impressed with Zack Snyder's Justice League.
Monster Hunter was lame.
The remake of 'It' was lame.

I love monster movies.
There's a lot of monster movies which were done, with great concepts, but were left hanging.
I love intelligent science fiction.
Way too many brilliant science fiction movies left room for sequels which were never developed.
Even some syfy/asylum productions had some really good scifi concepts. Too bad they wasted them.

Lets face it, Hollyweird is not going to do what makes sense, they're going to do what makes dollar$. Its all about the money and how they look at the public reaction. Intelligence, creativity and sense is not in the equation.

The Relic (great book) had a sequel, I believe called 'Reliquary'.
not bad
I'm seeing a lot of meh in that list. 'Deep Rising'? not bad but worth a sequel?

LoL, The Relic with the Kothoga

Deep Rising's ending suggested another monster was on the island.
I'd love to see it.

I loves me sum monsters!
