Politics Sex Offenders

In the light of the Jessica Lunsford tragedy I thought that this topic was relevant.

The man who has admitted to abducting and killing her was a convicted sex offender who was out of jail and skipped town after the incident.

Another case involved Carlie Brucia. The man who abducted and killed her was also a convicted offender who had only been forced to serve 13 months of a possible 43 years. He was on parole when he commited his crimes against Carlie.

In light of all these events what do you think should be done with convicted sex offenders. The overwhelming evidence is that they can't be rehilbilitated.

Personally I think they need to stay locked up. Tell me if you disagree, but this is one crime that really sickens me and infuriates me. It ruins peoples lives forever, yet they are able to come out of jail after 13 months to commit another crime. Something doesn't seem right with any of that.

Are you talking about sex offenders in general or pedophiles? Because some sex offenders are given that label because they're habitual flashers and not pedophiles.

I'm mainly talking pedophiles...but not even that. Someone who commits a sexual act against another without their will...like rapists or molesters.

Sorry for the confusion...I personally never even considered a flasher a sex offender (which they are) just as a wacko.

I haven't heard about the Carlie Brucia case, but the other case has been constantly coming into my inbox (i get news alerts sent to me). I agree with you that they should be locked up and stay that way. It's scary that some are allowed to walked only after a year or so...

I noticed however that the guy in the Jessica Lundsey case...there doesn't seem to be much information about him where I'm getting my news from. Do you know where there would be more information bout the guy? The details are kinda shady...

I've been getting most of my information from cnn.com. The link here: CNN.com - Search under way for girl's body - Mar 18, 2005 gives some backround information about Couey and his past charges...it really is scary.

And the Carlie Brucia case happened awhile ago...but they have an article up on the Amber Alert website about her case...mainly about how completely shocking it is that the man who killed her was out after only 13 months.

Thanks for clarification. Well, I've read that pedophilia cannot be cured but treated through therapy. Ok, famed director Roman Polanski slept with a 13 year old girl when he was 43. Yet, he fled the country (USA) to escape prison time. As far as I know, he hasn't been arrested for sleeping with a minor and hasn't been rumored to have been with one since then. Of course, he lives in France where their laws are more liberal than America's.

Another director, Victor Salva (he directed Jeepers Creepers 1&2) was convicted of child molestation and child pornography(the victim was a 12 year old boy) He grew up repressing his homosexuality. Unlike Roman, he did serve prison time and has claimed that he has learned from his mistakes. He hasn't been convicted of any crime since then. However, I still believe that he has still has thoughts about pedophilia thoughts because of his Jeepers Creepers movie. (check out my analysis of the his movies in the horror movie forum) It's clear that his still has thoughts about pedophilia, but instead of acting them out on children he makes the JC movies as an outlet. So, I don't think he should be imprisoned for just having thoughts, I believe he needs intense therapy.

Pedophiles as a whole, well I think they should be imprisoned for a long period of time while going to therapy. Their imprisonment should be based on their past as well, a repear offender should be sentenced to life. I'm talking about a first time offender. Depending on their behavoir in prison, the gravity of their crime, time of imprisonment and their therapy maybe they should be released... now hear me out before chasing after me with a pitch fork. Perhaps, they should be released on a monitored trial period of freedom. They should not be allowed to live in close proximity of places where children are found like schools, parks etc. They should not be allowed any "strikes" if they mess up just once, they should be locked in prison for the rest of their lives while attending therapy.

I pretty much agree with what you're saying (no pitchforks here :P ).

It's true that they really can't be rehilbilited and I think letting them out after only 13 months is honestly a joke.

But depending on the gravity of the crime then I'm not sure all of them should be locked up forever.

An example would be statutory rape. A lot of times the parties involved are willing participants. Like a 15 year old girl having a 19 year old boyfriend for example. A lot of times the parents find out and turn the 19 year old in because they disagree with it. I don't think the 19 year old should be locked away forever.

That is an extreme case and one that is just utterly disgusting.

But he is of age now, so technically they can do whatever they want.

I just don't understand how she could have been attracted to a child. I mean, I'm of age and I can't imagine being attracted to someone who is that young! I would just feel so ....creepy and disgusted!

In some cases they actually do that in Florida.

I'm all for that. Or give them vasectomies.

Sex offenders cover anyone from pedophiles (pedophilia is a psychological disorder) to rapists.

What happened to Jessica Lundsford is very sad. Parole is very often given to sex offenders, especially if they have only been convicted once. Prisons are overcrowded. Too bad there are so many parole violators out there. Sex offenders really need to be kept in prison and not given a "second chance"... or, before they are let out on parole, more in-depth psychological testing is needed.

I agree. It's said that you have people in prison with minor drug charges, yet convicted sex offenders are free to roam the streets.

my old softball coach's husband was/is a child molestor...i don't know why she stayed with him. i mean I know he didn't stop...but she never believed it.

i wonder why women stay with men who do things like that.

There are lots of reasons. It varies from woman to woman. But maybe he was good to her, and she just couldn't believe he would do such bad things to children. Maybe it was for financial reasons... many women stay because they don't make enough money (or have the education to potentially get a job where they'd make enough money) and they depend on their husband's income.

I agree that sex offenders are disgusting, but I don't think we should resort to mutilation. I really believe in the whole, "No cruel or unusual punishment" clause in the constitution. Instead, I definitely think we need more jail time for rapists/pedophiles/etc.
