ok part one of the prequal (if u like i'll post more... if you think it sucks... then i wont)

Rating: umm i dont see why anything would be worse than PG... maybe PG-13 but i honetsly dont think so...

As the bus she was ridding on rumbled along the road, Skyler gazed dreamily out the window at the passing fields. This was truly farm country. There were fields and fields as far as the eye could see. Skyler sighed and shifted in her seat trying to become more comfortable. She began to dig through her only bag looking for a piece of candy to suck on. She was dreadfully hungry but had nothing to eat. She was on her way to find a new job and had barely any money. She had heard when she was in town at the market, that a family in a town about twenty miles away needed a new governess for two children so she decided to check it out. She had to get away from the place she came from. It was too much of a dead end.

Skyler did not want to be a farm hand forever. When she was little, like every child, she dreamed of meeting a handsome prince who lived in a glorious castle and they would fall madly in love and live happily ever after and she would be far away from a provincial existence. She soon learned, however, that this was just a silly childhood fantasy. Nothing as idealistic as that could ever happen in real life. So she settled on a more reachable dream which would be to someday have a small farm of her own, or better yet, to never have to be near a farm again and to have a real job.

As she rummaged through her bag a photograph fell to the ground. She picked it up and looked at it. It was a very old, faded picture of her when she was a child. She could not have been more than three because in the picture she was being held by her father, who had died eleven years earlier. In the picture, they were surrounded by some of the other farm workers and in the distant background of the picture the large home of the farm owners could be seen. This picture brought a flood of memories to Skyler, after all this was the first time she had traveled outside of that farm and the small town that was near it.

Skyler’s earliest memory was of her falling into a lake on the farm and being rescued by Maggie, the woman who had become her surrogate mother. Skyler had no recollections at all of her parents. Her mother had died in childbirth and her father had died when she was barely three years old, in a tragic farm accident. So, being an orphan at such a young age the farm’s owners took pity on her and let her stay at the farm and she was raised mostly by Maggie, who had three children of her own, and partially by a few other farm hands.

As Skyler grew older she was given odd jobs to do around the farm. She would help feed the animals, paint things, scrub things, and sometimes she even helped plant seeds and pick vegetables. Though Skyler thought of the farm as her home she greatly disliked it. There were often references made about her parents and this angered Skyler because she knew nothing about them and the people acted like she did. Also, she was the only young child on the farm because Maggie’s youngest child was ten years older than Skyler so she was often very bored.

By the time she was 12 she knew she had to get out on her own. She was very mature for her age and she greatly wished she could have a different life. So every time she went into town to buy things with the other farm hands, she constantly kept her ears and eyes open for other job opportunities. Finally she saw an ad for a governess and decided it would be a good opportunity for her. She did not tell the other farm hands she was leaving; she merely left one night and left behind a note on her pillow explaining that she had to leave.

Skyler was jolted from her day dream by the bus she was riding on rumbling to a stop. They had reached a town called Appleton, this where the family was that Skyler wished to work for. As she departed from the bus carrying her bad she noticed right away that this town was much nicer than the one she had came from. All of the buildings were very neat and tidy. The homes were also considerably larger. Skyler unfolded a piece of paper from her pocket and read the address of the place she was to go. She asked for directions at the gas station the bus dropped her off at and was soon on her way down Main Street. Skyler was a tiny bit nervous to meet the family. She hoped that they would believe that she was 17, three years older than her actual age. People were always commenting to her that she looked older than she really was so she hoped that they would too.

Soon she reached her destination and shakily rang the bell. A woman in a maid’s outfit opened the door and asked,
“Can I help you miss?”
“Yes,” Skyler replied. “I’m here to inquire about the governess position.”
“Very well, come in.” The maid said. “Mrs. Longwood will be with you in a moment.”
Skyler walked into the elaborate parlor. It was full of many lovely things. These people were clearly wealthy, at least wealthier than anyone Skyler had ever known.
Soon a tall, thin woman entered the room. She extended her hand and said,
“I am Mrs. Longwood, won’t you please have a seat.” She said. Skyler sat down. “I understand you have inquired about the governess position.”
“Yes, I have.” Skyler said.
“What is your name?” The woman asked.
“Oh, I’m sorry. I am Skyler Jones.”
“Well Miss Jones, you look awful young. How old are you?” The woman asked.
“Seventeen,” Skyler replied nervously.
“I see, well do you have experience with children?”
“Well I like children very much and I helped watch some children on the farm where I used to work.” Skyler lied again. She did not like lying to this woman to get the job, but she really needed money and she knew she would never be qualified for the position with out embellishment.
“Oh I see. Why exactly did you leave your previous position?” Mrs. Longwood asked.
“Well, I had been on that farm for my whole life and I just needed to get out on my own.”
“I see. Well considering that we are rather desperate for assistance, I am willing to hire you on a temporary basis.”
“Oh thank you very much.” Skyler said graciously.
“Come up stairs please so you can meet the children.” The woman said as she left the room and started up the stairs. Skyler followed her. They entered a room that Skyler guessed was the play room. Inside there were two children sitting separately.
“Children, this is your new governess Miss Jones. Miss Jones, these are my children. Jamie is eight and Jack is seven. Well I shall leave you to get acquainted.” Miss Longwood said as she left the room.
Skyler sighed and the children looked silently up at her. She took a deep breath, not really knowing what to do. Then she said,
“So why don’t you children tell me a bit about your selves.”
The children then rolled their eyes and went back to what they were doing. The girl was playing with a doll and the boy was rolling toy trucks along the floor. Skyler walked around the room and found that many pictures adorned the walls. They must be pictures of the children growing up, Skyler thought to herself. A few minuets later the maid who had opened the front door came into the room.
“Miss Jones I am here to show you your room.” She said. Skyler followed her out of the room and across the hall. “My name is Macy by the way.”
“Oh, it’s nice to meet you.” Skyler stated. The room they entered was decent size but very plain.
“This will be your room,” Macy said. “The children’s tutor comes every day at 8:00 a.m. so they should be up and dressed by then.”
“Oh, alright.” Skyler said. She had forgotten that regular children attend school. She herself had never been formally educated. She was taught to read and write and do some arithmetic by Maggie, but other than that she didn’t have much education.
“I believe Miss Longwood will be in to speak with you later. Dinner will be served at six o’clock.” Macy said as she left Skyler alone in the room. Skyler unpacked her things and went over to try and get the children to speak with her a bit more.

Before Skyler knew it she had been working for the Longwood’s for nearly a year. Every day was very much the same as the next. The children got up, ate their breakfast, dress and were tutored for three hours. Skyler very much enjoyed the tutoring times because Skyler learned a great deal as well. She made a habit of staying in the room where the tutor was.
After the tutor left, the children ate lunch and then Skyler took them some place in the afternoon. Then they ate dinner and played by themselves and went to bed. The same routine became very boring to Skyler, but she accepted it because she was thankful it was not difficult.
Skyler felt that the children were not very fond of her. They never really spoke to her much. They just accepted her. Skyler noticed though that the children never really spoke much to anyone, not even their parents or to each other. In Skyler’s opinion they lead a very sad, depressing life.

Soon after Skyler turned sixteen she was fired by the Longwood’s. Not because they did not like her, but because Mr. Longwood had lost his job and they were financially unable to have a governess anymore. Skyler really wasn’t sure what she was going to do for another job, but the Longwood’s had arranged for her to become a governess for another family in town.

Skyler liked the next family she worked for, but she was barely with them for six months before they ran out of money as well and they could no longer afford her. In fact the whole town seemed to be running out of money, it was very strange, Skyler thought. Unfortunately for her this family was unable to get Skyler another governess position.
Skyler along with the other two servants from that family and other servants from other families in that town had been sold to a man name Beans. Beans was a man who bought bunches of servants and ran a business of renting them out for short periods of time. Skyler thought he didn’t think of them as humans at all, only merchandise for rent. She did not really have any choice in the matter though. She had tried to explain that she was not a servant more as an employee, but seeing as she did not have any birth certificates or other official documents proving who she was, she could not prove that she was not a servant. Plus even if she did, she would not be eighteen for another few months so she was not even an adult.
So Skyler and the other servants piled into a van that was to take them to yet another town. This town, however, would take about ten hours by car to get to. It was very near to the capital city, where the palace was. Skyler secretly hoped that she would be rented by a family who lived in the capital city so she could catch a glimpse at the palace. She had never seen a place before.

The ride in the van was very long, hot and uncomfortable. But soon enough, they came to a stop. Skyler looked at the place where they were to stay. It looked as if it had once been a very large, very beautiful, elegant mansion. Now, however, the mansion was neither beautiful nor elegant. Many of its windows were broken or boarded up, the paint was peeling and shingles were falling off of the roof. Skyler sighed as they entered the home and discovered that the inside was even worse than the outside. The floor was covered in trash and what little furniture there was had many holes in it.
Beans, who was a very large, hairy man with a gruff voice said,
“Now you follow me upstairs and I’ll show you your temporary rooms.”
They all went up the steps and at the first landing he said, “Women’s rooms here, men follow men.”
Skyler and the one other woman made their way down the hallway. They stopped in the first room and found two mattresses on the floor, both occupied by sleeping women. The next room contained the same thing, but the third had two empty mattresses on the floor. Skyler and the other woman sat down on them. Skyler could not believe how her luck had gone down hill so fast. A few minutes later a woman knocked at their door and said,
“Are yous two new?”
“Yes,” Skyler replied quietly. The woman in the doorway had no teeth Skyler noticed.
“Ah well I ain’t gonna lie, you ain’t gonna like it here.” She said.
“Oh and why not?” Skyler inquired in a shaky voice.
“Well ‘cause you look like you came from a nice home, and this ain’t nice.”
“I see,” Skyler said. “What exactly are the chances of us being able to leave here and be, you know, free?”
The girl did not answer her; she just laughed hysterically and walked a way. To Skyler, that was defiantly an ominous sign.
Later a boy, who Skyler believed to be no older than 11 came to their door and said they were to go down stairs to Beans’ office. When they arrived in front of the door the other girl was told to wait outside and Skyler was ushered inside the office. She sat down in a chair in front of the desk.
“Now,” Beans began. “What exactly are you able to do?”
“Well I was a governess and I can be a maid.” Skyler purposely did not mention her farm hand experience because she did not wish to be a farm hand.
“Uh huh, now have you had any education?”
“Well some, I can read and write and do some other things as well.”
“I see. Well how about farm work?”
Skyler shuddered. “What do you mean?”
“Well it’s just about the season to have crops picked and all the farms be asking for extra hands do you think you can handle that?” Beans asked her.
“I suppose.” Skyler said.
“Well good cause you don’t have much choice. Someone will come and pick you up in the morning, so eat your dinner and go on off to bed.” Beans told her. Reluctantly Skyler followed his instructions but she silently prayed that the farm work would not be that bad.

Skyler’s first job was not too bad. The people were nice and the work was not too difficult and the living conditions were better than at Beans’ house so she was not too unhappy. In fact when she had to return to Beans in three weeks she was almost sad to leave. But, she had to. Skyler was barely back when she was rented out again. This time she was to be a maid to a family for a week.
This family was having relatives come to visit and they wanted to appear upper class. So this family rented Skyler to be a maid and another man to be a butler. They were a nice family and Skyler got to stay in a nice room in a big house. But, at the end of the week she was shipped back to Beans.
Skyler was already tired of being rented out to people. This is so stupid, she often though to herself. She wanted to run away but she had heard rumors of when another person ran away from Beans they were shot and killed. Skyler though this could have been a made up story, but she did not want to risk it. Not to mention the fact that Beans had taken all of her money so she could not even support herself if she left.
For the next few weeks Skyler remained at the dilapidated house of Beans. The other people came and went as they were rented out. The weather was beginning to grow cold as winter was approaching. The house was not very well insulated, which did not surprise Skyler at all, so it was very freezing all the time.
One day Skyler walked into the kitchen where a few of the people being rented out were having a conversation. Skyler overheard parts of it.
“...Listen I’m telling you there’s nothing you can do about it. Slaves have no rights.” Said one woman.
“She’s right you know.” Said another man.
“Excuse me,” Skyler interrupted. “But we are not slaves.”
“Yeah, right,” the first woman said sarcastically.
“What are we then?” Said the man.
“Well I don’t know, but we are not ...” Skyler began.
“Listen girl, what right do we have? We cannot come and go as we please, we cannot have any money of our own, we are just at the will of Beans. We are slaves and there’s nothing we can do about it.”
Skyler ran from the room. That woman is right, she thought. She had never really considered it before or maybe she just did not want to believe it, but she was defiantly a slave. Skyler could not believe that this was legal. So she decided to speak to Beans about it in the morning.
When morning came however, it was Beans who wished to speak to her. She went into his office.
“I got another job for you. The people said they wanted a farm hand or something, though I don’t know what they’ll have you do in the dead of winter. Oh well they will be here to pick you up at noon.”
“Excuse me,” Skyler began. “But what if I don’t want to go?”
Beans looked up at her with a surprised expression on his face. It was as though no one had ever said this to him before. “What do you mean ‘don’t want to go’?” He inquired.
“I mean I don’t want to work outside in winter. It’s very cold and I ...”
Beans interrupted her. “Well you don’t have a choice, it is up to me to decide where you go and I decided that you are going to go to the Pinches. That’s their name Pinch. So you can either go by your own will or we can force you to go but either way your going.” Beans yelled in a voice that made Skyler cower.
“Yes sir.” She replied.

This job, however, was not as nice as the first two. After only being there for two days Skyler felt like she was going to die. She was forced to sleep out in the ban with no more to sleep on than some straw and an extra horse blanket. Matters were made worse by the fact that winter was quickly approaching and an icy wind blew constantly. Skyler was not even very sure of her purpose on the farm. She barely worked at all during the day. Mostly she just sat in the barn shivering.
One morning when she woke up Mr. Pinch was standing over her with a lantern.
“Get up,” he said with a squeaky voice. For such a large man he had a very tiny voice.
“What time is it?” Skyler groaned.
“Four thirty,” Pinch said.
“A.m.?” Skyler asked as she sat up.
“Yeah now get up; you have to fix the fence around the field. Parts of the fence blew down in the storm.”
Skyler was just about to ask what storm Pinch was referring to, but once she got up and looked out the window there was no need. The entire farm was covered in a blanket of white show. It was nearly light outside as well because of the moon’s reflection off of the snow. There were still white flakes floating down from the sky as well. Skyler pulled on her warmest clothes and followed Pinch out into the freezing air.
They trudged through the snow to the place where the fence was broken. Pinch handed her a hammer, nails and a few extra planks of wood to fix the broken ones. Skyler though this was a joke. How could he expect her to do work outside in these conditions?
“You want me to fix this today?” Skyler asked in disbelief.
“Yeah, and you had better get stared because there is another broken section on the other side of the field.” Pinch said as she turned to leave.
“Where are you going?” She asked him.
“Inside, I’m not going to stay outside on a day like this.” Pinch walked back to the house and left Skyler alone. She was very unsure of what to do since she had never mended a fence before in her life. So she started to do what she could. It was very difficult to hold the hammer and nail with her gloves on so Skyler took them off. After a few moments though, she could no longer feel her fingers and she feared frostbite, so she decided to put her gloves back on.
After what seemed like ages, a bell rang at the house signaling breakfast. Skyler put down her tools and shuffled numbly toward the house. She knocked on the back door and a few minutes later a plate was shoved at her and the door was closed quickly behind. In the brief second the door was open, Skyler could feel the warmth from inside and she longed to go in. Instead she made her way to the barn to eat. Inside the barn was better than outside because at least Skyler was shielded from the wind and the snow that was beginning to fall more heavily.
When she had finished eating, Skyler again braved the elements to finish the fence. She did not know how long it took her but she eventually completed the one broken fence. It did not look very good, but at least it was better than before. Skyler, who was soaked clear through to the skin because the snow had changed into a freezing rain, made her way across the field to the next broken fence section. Once she tripped and fell face first into the snow. She deeply contemplated not getting up at all because she was so cold and tired. But she dragged herself up and made her way over to the next fence section.
When she was finished she was so cold and tired she could barely walk back to the barn. When she did, she just collapsed on her make-shift bed shivering herself to sleep.
She awoke, she did not know how much latter, by Pinch prodding her with something. She barely had the strength to open her eyes. Evidently, he had been checking to see why she had not reported back to him after finished the fence. She did not answer his questions and was prodded once more. This time Skyler felt a sharp wave go through her body as if she was being electrocuted. Still, she did not stir. After a few minutes, Pinch left her alone.
Skyler awoke the next morning feeling emensley better. So she dressed and headed up to the house for breakfast, since she had not eaten in nearly twenty four hours. But instead of giving her food, Pinch dragged her, by her hair, out to a different building, a smaller building, one she had never been in before.
“You need to be punished.”
“What for?” Skyler asked indignantly.
“You did not work yesterday.”
“What do you mean? I fixed the fence!” Skyler yelled. She knew she should not speak back like that but her temper got the better of her.
“Yes,” Pinch began. “But, you did not work up to the standard Beans promised us.”
“Then why don’t you punish him.” Skyler paused. Until then she had not been paying attention to what Pinch was doing. Now she saw that he was bending down over something, something that appeared to be a fire. “What are you doing?”
“Heating up your punishment,” he mumbled.
“What?”
“I said,” Pinch growled shoving a red hot iron rod into her face. “Heating up your punishment.”
Skyler cowered away and tried to run, but Pinch threw down the iron and grabbed her. Skyler tried to fight him off, but Pinch was too large and he slammed her against the wall. Then he wrestled her to the ground, wrenched off her shoe and reached for the iron rod. Skyler, realizing what he was about to do, tried to struggle free, but it was no use, she was pinned to the ground. Then, a hot, searing pain shot from the sole of her foot through her body. She howled in pain and as soon as she could get free, she ran outside and sank her burning foot into the icy snow. Skyler felt immediate relief, but was upset by the fact that she felt her skin sizzling. She crouched down in the snow and taking a deep breath she looked at the bottom of her foot. Toward the heel was a bunt square of skin not much bigger than a quarter. Skyler could not bear to look at it. Sobbing, she put her foot down and hobbled toward her shoe that Pinch had thrown to her.
“That will teach you to disobey me.” He said coldly. “Now go fetch your tools, there is more fence to fix.”

Skyler never disobeyed Pinch again. Her foot soon healed and she was able to walk on it again, but the burn had left a deeper wound on Skyler. She never felt safe again, especially not around Pinch. Skyler kept on doing the work she was told to do, but Pinch never seemed satisfied. He was always finding some reason to punish Skyler. He never burned her again, but he would with hold meals, whip her, or shock her with the cattle prod, among other things. Skyler was able to stand it as best she could until one time.
It was a cold, wintry day toward the end of January. Pinch had come to the barn early in the morning to tell Skyler that she needed to shovel a path out to the main road, which was nearly half a mile away. Skyler, not wanted to disobey Pinch, silently picked up a shovel and began to work. Skyler could barely move the heavy snow which was almost two feet deep. She was so weak and thin from having so many meals with held from her. But she knew that if she did not clear the path that Pinch would punish her, and she did not want that.
Skyler was completely miserable after working for about ten minutes. She was already partially sick from working the previous day and now she was feeling even worse. She tried to continue, but she could not and she collapsed into the snow.

When Skyler awoke she was lying in a hospital bed. The doctors explained to her that she fainted while shoveling the driveway and when the Pinch’s were unable to wake her they decided they had better bring her to the emergency room. Skyler was very ill with pneumonia and she would have to remain in the hospital for over a week. The Pinch’s did not want her anymore so when she was released she would be returned to Beans.

Within two weeks Skyler was put into a taxi and sent back to Beans’ broken down home. When she arrived, Skyler found the atmosphere much different than before. It seemed that everyone was talking about Skyler behind her back and she was sure that every time she walked into a room everyone suddenly stopped talking. Skyler was not rented out for at least two weeks after her return. She was not sure if it was Beans being nice to her or just that no one wanted her. She was however, glad for the break. She was not sure how she was going to handle being rented out again. She was so afraid of getting another master like Pinch that she was barely able to sleep at night because of her worrying.
In the beginning of March, though, she was rented out as a maid to a nice family. She quickly came to the realization that this job would probably be her favorite one. The family consisted of a mother with two children. The children’s father, Mr. Brown, was away on a very long business trip. Mrs. Brown and the children were very nice and did not treat her like a slave at all. In fact, they almost restored her faith in the fact that people could be nice and kind to their hired help. Her faith however was dashed as soon as Mr. Brown returned. Mr. Brown treated her very much like a slave. In fact he treated her as if she was some kind of animal with no knowledge of proper behavior at all. Mr. Brown treated her better than Mr. Pinch had, but not much.
In fact, Mr. Brown’s return had changed the atmosphere of the entire household. It seemed that Mrs. Brown and the children were intimidated by Mr. Brown so much that they were forced to treat Skyler just as foully as he did. So Skyler resorted to speaking hardly at all and making sure to stay out of every one’s way. At least, Skyler often thought to herself, I’m inside and they don’t hit me either.
Skyler stayed with the Brown’s for nearly nine months, in that time Skyler’s only enjoyable moments were when Mr. Brown was away on business, which was fairly often. One time in the summer Skyler was even certified as a lifeguard so she could properly watch the children in the family’s pool. However when winter was approaching again the Brown’s decided to move and they did not take Skyler with them so she was stuck facing another freezing winter at Beans’ home.

After being at the Brown’s for so long Beans’ home appeared to have deteriorated much worse than Skyler could have imagined. It now seemed that all of the windows had gaping holes in them and the house’s siding was beginning to come off. Every night Skyler shivered so much that she though she would fall right off of her mattress. But, Skyler constantly reminded herself, it was still better than sleeping in Pinch’s barn.
By January the cold was almost unbearable. No one was being rented out either; the house was as full of slaves as it had ever been. One day, every one was awoken by pounding on the front door. Skyler and the others gathered on the steps to listen to the conversation between Beans and the men at the door, who turned out to be police officers.
“What do you mean condemned?” Beans shouted angrily.
“This building is unsafe for human inhabitants.” One of the police men said.
“Well where are we to go then?” Beans asked.
“Well you won’t have to worry about that.”
“Why?” Beans asked.
“Because,” one police man said. “We are shutting down your establishment. Your license is being revoked and you are being put in prison.”
“And your employees will be auctioned off.” The other police man said.
Auctioned off? Skyler thought to herself. That would mean that they would all be treated just like cattle at auction. This though upset Skyler very much. What if she was auctioned off to someone like Pinch? How would she ever survive?

The morning of the auction came all too quickly for Skyler. She and the others were put into a van and driven to the auction site, which happened to be in the capital city. As they drove into the city they passed a great, heavily guarded wall and gate. The others whispered among themselves,
“That’s the palace.”
Skyler tried to get a good look at it, but she could not see anything because of the large wall. They arrived at a large open area where there were already swarms of people gathering. She wondered how often they had these auctions.
They were all unloaded from the van and given numbers. There were many other men and women there who appeared like they were going to be auctioned as well since they were all wearing numbers. Skyler saw them go up to the stage one by one and the auctioneer said something about them and then the bidding began. Soon it was Skyler’s turn. The auctioneer said,
“Female, approximately twenty years of age, skilled in maid work, farm work and child care.” Skyler was so nervous that before she knew it the auctioneer said, “Sold to number 54.” She did not even hear how much money she had gone for. A man came up on the platform and pulled her down to the side. She was shoved over to a group of three other women who had also apparently been bought by number 54. They both looked older than Skyler however.
A few moments later they were joined by one other woman. After that a man dressed in a very nice suit and tie walked over to them. He was holding a wooden paddle that had the number 54 written on it. So this is the man who purchased me, Skyler thought.
“Follow me ladies,” number 54 said. They all walked behind him as he walked away from the crowd. They stopped in front of a large car in a parking area.
“Excuse me sir, where are we going?” One woman asked.
“Well now before we go,” number 54 began ignoring the woman’s question, “we must set some ground rules. Number one; never speak unless directly spoken to. Number two; always face the floor unless otherwise directed to. Number three, whenever anyone enters a room that you are in or you enter a room containing people, you must always curtsy politely. Is that understood?”
“Yes, sir,” one of the girls said.
“Good,” number 54 said sternly. “Now get in the car and we will go to the palace.”
The palace? Skyler thought excitedly. If that was where she was to be working that this could turn out much better than she had expected. Much better, indeed, she said to herself.

next part (cuz sheblys so anxious!)
ok this part starts the actual story..
Loves True Verdict (yeah yeah lame title..)

Her eyes burned as she stepped out into the brightly lit courtroom. For the corridor she had just exited was dark, dingy, and damp. After all it did come from a prison, she thought. She stood there observing the place she would reside in while her fate was decided. The room was cold and uninviting. It was about half full of onlookers all whispering excitedly among themselves.
“Is that her?”
“Is she the one?”
She scanned the courtroom for him. Her eyes searched longingly across each and every face but, alas, he was not there. She felt as though she was going to cry, when suddenly she was yanked sideways and nearly fell. She had forgotten that handcuffs were around her hands and feet. How humiliating, she thought as she took a seat waiting for the judge to arrive, being paraded around in an orange suit, and shackled up like an animal. Caged up all day and only being let out to be surveyed and scrutinized by a panel of people, whom she had never met and who did not even know her.
Again she surveyed the crowd, still he was not there. He has got to come, he just has to, she thought. Out of the corner of her eye she noticed someone beckoning her lawyer, if you could call him that. Her lawyer was mean and cynical. He did not care what happened to her or them. Nobody did. Her lawyer returned and thrust a folded piece of paper in her hands. “For you,” he said in a disgusted tone. She unfolded the paper slowly and read:
I am so sorry I can’t be there by your side. But they won’t let me. They say I am supposed to be against you, but I'm not. I know that somehow, some way we will find a way to be together in the end. Good luck and do not lose hope. We will be together soon.
Love, Josh
After reading the letter, she folded it up and placed it in her pocket. She felt tears welling up in her eyes and they began to fall down her cheeks and slowly drip onto her lap. She understood why he could not be there, but she still was sad he was not. She wiped away her tears and again looked around the room. Up front, a stenographer just sat down at her position getting ready. The jury panel was seated to her right. There were twelve of them. She looked at each one of their faces wondering if they’d be fair or not, if they cared at all. Then the judge came in.
“All rise for the honorable Judge White.” The bailiff said in a strong tone. Everybody stood as the judge came in from her chambers and sat upon her bench.
“You may sit.” She said. Then turning to the bailiff said, “Do you have the papers?”
“In the case of the state versus Skyler Jones,” the bailiff said as he handed the papers to the judge.
“How do you plead Miss Jones?” The judge asked her.
“Not guilty,” Skyler replied.
“Prosecution, would you care to make a statement?” The judge asked the lawyer sitting at the other table next to Skyler. He was very tall and stern looking. He stood and walked toward the bench, then said:
“Your Honor, I intend to prove that Miss Jones here is guilty of treason and lack of respect toward our ruler in this great nation.”
“Very well, defense would you care to call your first witness please,” the judge said. Skyler’s lawyer stood and said. “The defense calls Skyler Jones to the stand.” Skyler stood and gracefully walked to the witness stand. She stood next to the bailiff who said:
“Do you swear to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help you God?”
“I do,” she replied and sat down. On the witness stand she could look out over the whole court room. It was about half full. Most of the people there were from the press for this trial was closed from the general public. Skyler was glad for that; she did not want all those people judging her. She saw her lawyer walk toward her.
“Tell me Miss Jones, what is your position at the palace?” he began.
“Maid and servant to his Royal Highness,” She replied in a shaky voice. She was more nervous than she had ever been in her whole life.
“And, how did you acquire this position?”
“About two years ago, a man bought me from a slave auction.”
“Could you describe your first meeting with his Royal Highness?”
“When I first arrived at the palace, about 4 other women and I were taken into a large room. We were given the rules for working at the palace. Some of which included always looking down, never at the face of someone else. Also, if his Royal highness entered the room we were to lower our heads and bow until given permission to stand or his Royal Highness left the room. Then he came in and we all bowed. He walked back and forth across the line of us, and then left.”
“And what was your impression of him at that time?”
“I didn’t really have one. He barely said anything.”
“Could you explain what you did at your position at the palace?”
“Well mainly I did what my supervisor, Miss Smith, told me to do. Some days it was mopping floors, others it was waiting on his Highness. Then in the summer, I was often a lifeguard at his Highness’ pool.”
“Oh, I see, when did you first have personal contact with his Royal Highness?”
“It was about 6 months after I started working there.”
“And would you describe this encounter for me?”
“Well the floor had just been cleaned so it was wet and slippery. I was carrying towels down to be washed and I saw him approaching so I tried to bow but I slipped and fell. I was afraid because when this happened to another maid, she was punished for it. Anyway, he saw me and came over and helped me up and said ‘Next time watch where you’re walking, these wet floors can really be a problem.’ Then he walked away.”
“Uh huh, could you please describe the events of the Good Will Ball to me?” Her lawyer said mechanically. She did not even think he was paying attention.
“Oh well every year one member of the staff wins a trip to the Good Will Ball. That year, I won. You were supposed to get a pretty dress and just kind of hang out on the sidelines. It was mainly just so you could observe how the ‘other half’ lived. About two days before the ball Duke Peterson was trying to teach his Royal Highness how to dance better. He wasn’t making much progress and saw me walking past on my way to the kitchen. He called me in and told me to dance with his Highness so he could learn easier. We danced, although he kept stepping on my feet and then I left. As I left I heard him telling the duke how good of a dancer he thought I was.
“Then on the day of the ball. I went to my room to get dressed into this less than perfect gown, and I found this beautiful gown lying on the bed. There was a note saying to wear it, but the note had no name. I wasn’t sure what to do but then my fellow servants came in to help me get ready and convinced me to wear it.
“Later, at the ball, I was standing in the corner, when I saw his Highness coming toward me. He asked me to dance. I didn’t know what to do, I guess he recognized me, so I just nodded my head and took his hand. When we were dancing it was almost like we were floating. It felt like we were in our own little world and we were the only two people there. It was amazing. We stopped and he led me out into another room. Then he leaned over and…”
Suddenly a police officer burst in. He ran past everybody and up to the judge and whispered something in her ear. “I’m sorry,” the judge said, “but something has come up; we will have to continue tomorrow. Court adjourned.”
People began filing out of the courtroom. An officer from the prison came over to Skyler and led her toward the corridor leading to the prison. As she entered the hallway she couldn’t see much since her eyes hadn’t adjusted to the dimness of the hall. They soon came to another door that had Women’s Correctional Institution written across the top in big, black letters. The officer punched a code into the keypad and the door buzzed open. They walked through the door and it slammed quickly behind them. They walked down another hall and came to a desk. The officer stopped and said to the person at it.
“Returning prisoner 5763 to her cell.”
“That trial was over pretty fast,” the man behind the desk said.
“Yeah well something came up,” the officer said as he led her through the next door. They were now in one of the main hallways of the prison. It was long and wide with many cells off each side. They walked about halfway down and stopped. One officer took the restraints off of Skyler’s hands and feet and the other opened her cell door. She stepped in and the bars slammed behind her. Back here again, she thought. She walked over to her cot and lied down. Her cellmate was asleep. Her cell was small and cramped, as if she expected prison to be spacious. She kept mainly to herself while she was in prison. The other people there scared her. In fact, she had never even spoken to the others around her cell. One girl, across the hall, whose name was Muffy, had killed her whole family. Also, from what she could gather, her cell mate had also killed someone as well. Why did she have to be in here, she often asked herself. She hadn’t done anything wrong. It was all Duke Peterson’s fault. He was the one who accused her. He said she did something wrong. A false accusation like that had landed her here. And she had no idea when, or if, she would ever leave.

The next morning, very early, she was informed by one of the guards that her trial would continue. So at eight o’clock sharp, the same two men from yesterday came and brought Skyler out of her cell. They put her feet and hands back into the handcuffs and took her to the courtroom. The judge entered and before she sat down she said,
“Sorry that we had to cut the hearing short yesterday, but we shall continue where we left off. Miss Jones please take the witness stand.”
Skyler stood up and walked to the stand. She sat down and watched her lawyer approach her.
“Alright Miss Jones, if I remember, yesterday we ended with the Good Will Ball. Is that correct?” Her lawyer asked.
“Yes,” she replied.
“Now if you would, please describe to the court how you and His Royal Highness became, as they say, ‘an item’.” A small chuckle rose through the court room. Then she began:
“About two days after the Good Will Ball, I was summoned to his Royal Highness’ office. I did not know what to expect, I had never been there before. Although I was kind of excited after what happened at the Ball, but I was also embarrassed by running off like that. Anyway I arrived in his office, bowing of course, and His Royal Highness dismissed the other man in the room, so that we were then alone. Then he said: ‘You may rise’. So I stood but kept looking at the floor. He said that he wanted to apologize for kissing me. He said he didn’t know what came over him. Then he asked me not to mention it to anyone and that was all. I suppose I was disappointed, but I really don’t know why, I mean a royal and a slave that could never happen, right? That is what I thought anyway. I didn’t have any more contact with his Highness until about three months later, in early spring.
“In spring, my supervisor told me his Highness wanted to speak to me about a new job he had for me. I thought this was extremely odd since his Highness almost never gave orders directly to a servant unless they were his personal ones. So I went to his office and he told me that he wanted me to get a group of servants together and redo the gardens. I was a bit taken aback because I knew his gardens were a mess, but I figured that a professional would be hired. But I agreed to help him, and I got started on the gardens. It took about two months to finish them. By the time we had finished, the gardens were lovely there was even a maze made with bushes. One day very soon after we had finished, His Royal Highness asked me to come with him into the gardens. I followed a few steps behind, as was required. He praised me on my good job on the gardens. Then he stopped in from of a particularly dense piece of brush that was about eight feet high and said: ‘I bet you didn’t find this, did you?’ He bent down and pulled back the shrubbery to reveal a tiny opening only large enough for one person to squeeze through. He told me to go in. I was a bit confused but I climbed in anyway. Inside was a small little area surrounded by an eight foot high bushes. There was a blanket lying on the ground. I turned around as his Highness stepped in nearly forgetting to keep my head down. ‘I come here sometimes,’ he began, ‘just to get away and think, you know. Nobody knows about it except me.’ Then he went on about how it is hard being in the spotlight constantly. I did not feel too sympathetic since I was a slave and all, but now I understand what he meant…”
Skyler was interrupted by her lawyer saying, “Yes, yes this is all well and good but could you move on please.” A bit surprised at his rudeness, she said:
“Um ok…Well we talked a lot over the next months. We kept meeting in the secret bush place. I guess I did not realize how friendly we were becoming. I was just glad to have someone to talk to and so was he I think. One day he said to me: ‘You know, Skyler, these talks we have are really great.’ It took me by surprise because it was the first time he ever called me by my first name. I looked right at him, right in his eyes, and then realized I was not allowed to. So I stood up mumbled about how like I had to leave and ran the whole way back to the palace.
“I successfully avoided his Highness for the next week. Then my supervisor told me I was getting a new position, personal servant to his Highness. Apparently he had requested me. I was very scared. I guess I didn’t know if I could stop myself from getting too involved with him. But I took a deep breath and went on with my job. I went to his office. ‘Oh good you’re here, look,’ he said as he approached me. ‘I don’t know what I said or did the other day to offend you but I’m very sorry. I hope we can still talk and stuff.’ I nodded my head and got up to leave. Then he said: ‘You know what wait.’ I stopped and he came over to me and took my hand and took me over to a couch that was in his office. ‘Sit down please, look I lied ok. The truth is I really like you and I would like to be more than friends, like dating people.’ When he said that, I really didn’t know what to say. I stood up and started to back away and said: ‘Why would a prince want to date his slave?’ ‘You are not a slave. I don’t care that you are a servant, it does not matter to me.’ He said. But I just said: ‘I’m sorry’ and left. I ran to my room and cried. I really liked him, but I didn’t trust him for some reason. I guess I had not had anyone in my life that was trustworthy before. Then the next week he did something that made me trust him and I told him I changed my mind and we became a couple.”
“Thank you,” her lawyer said sarcastically, “for that detailed account. Now if you would, please describe exactly how you went from then to now.”
“Well we ‘dated’ for a while, although it really was not dating. We never were seen together by anyone and we just met in the garden. He asked me to call him Josh because he felt that ‘his Royal Highness’ was way too formal. Then one day, about six or seven months after we started dating, around Christmas actually, we were in his office and he told me he loved me. I was so happy because I loved him too. Then one of his assistants, Miss Holly, walked in and saw us. I did not know what to do so I just bowed quickly and his Highness backed away. Then she looked at us and said: ‘Relax you two I’ve know for weeks.’ It turns out she had seen us watching a movie late one night. Later, when I had a chance to talk to her I asked her why she had not said anything. She said that she thought that we were cute and didn’t want to ruin anything. She and I became friends; it was nice to have someone else to talk to.”
“Are you telling me that you two had some picture perfect romance?” her lawyer asked suddenly. “I mean, I find that very hard to believe. Didn’t you ever have a fight?”
“Yes of course,” Skyler continued. “In fact we had a rather large fight right before he proposed to me.”
A small murmur went through the court room. She guessed that nobody knew that they were engaged. Not that that surprised her.
“Well I was angry that our relationship was not moving foreword. I thought he didn’t love me enough or something. I do not remember everything. Anyway, we had this huge fight one morning. Then that evening I was summoned to his quarters, because at that time I was still his servant. So I went in, and on the balcony there were tons of candles and a bunch of roses. I was really surprised especially when he proposed to me. Of course, I said yes…”
“Yeah who would refuse being a princess?” The prosecuting attorney added mockingly.
“That’s not why I…”Skyler yelled.
“Order, order please!” The judge yelled as she banged her gavel. “Mr. Prosecutor please refrain from commenting. Please continue Miss Jones.”
“Anyway, he told me that he was going to announce our engagement at his 25th birthday celebration the next week. I was very happy that we would not have to sneak around anymore, but that would not happen.
“Then next day we were in the ballroom practicing dancing when Duke Peterson came in and asked us to step into his Highness’ office. I thought this was odd, but I followed them in. Then Duke Peterson said that I was a disgrace among other insults. His highness defended me then finally yelled ‘What is this about, Duke?’ Then the Duke said that he was disappointed in his Highness, that we had broken some type of code or something. The police came in and took me away to the jail and the last thing I heard was his Highness yelling and trying to come after me.”
As she stopped talking, a single tear ran down her face. She looked up and everybody was staring at her intently. “Thank you,” her lawyer said. Then he turned to the prosecutor and said, “Your witness.” The prosecuting lawyer was a tall stern looking man. He rose and walked over to her. Then he said:
“Well there really isn’t much else since it is very obvious that you are guilty…”
“Counselor…” The judge interrupted.
“I just have one question. Would you take it back?”
“Pardon me?” Skyler said not understanding what he meant.
“If you could go back in time, would you change any of the choices that you made?”
Skyler sat there silently for a minuet, not knowing if that was a trick question. Then she said firmly: “No, No I wouldn’t change a thing. Because the time I spent with him was worth it. I don’t care what happens to me I would not change any of the things I did.”
“I see,” the prosecutor said. “No further questions, your honor.”
“Very well then,” the judge said. “Court is adjourned until Monday.” She stated with the bang of her gavel.

Skyler awoke early Saturday morning. She could not sleep at all. She was so worried about the trial. She sat up on her cot and looked around. The prison was dark, as usual. A guard walked down the hall mumbling something about his awful job. Skyler tried to turn over and go back to sleep but it didn’t work so she just lied there awake until the guards came and woke her and her cellmate up so they could get ready for the day.
Later on, all the prisoners from Skyler’s wing were out in the prison yard for their ‘exercise’. Skyler was walking around the grounds and stopped in front of the one fence. A car was coming up the drive. It was a limousine. ‘Why would a limousine come here?’ she thought to herself. On closer inspection, Skyler saw the limo had little flags on it that had the national emblem on them.
“Oh my gosh, that looks like Josh’s limo,” she said quietly to herself. Just then a whistle blew an all the women lined up to go back to their cells. Skyler left the limo behind and walked slowly back to her cell.
By the next morning she had forgotten about the limo and was worried about the trial again. Had her testimony been good? She wondered. ‘Or did I just incriminate myself more,’ she thought. Her cellmate was talking to other people in the wing again, but Skyler was not really paying attention to them. One of the other women yelled:
“Hey quiet girl!” Skyler looked up and the other girl continued, “How’s your trial going?” Skyler didn’t feel like sharing the details of her life with these people so she just shrugged her shoulders and went and sat back on her bed.
“See, I told you she wouldn’t speak,” another girl said.

Early Monday morning, two prison guards came and retrieved Skyler. They took her down the same dark corridor to the same courtroom. As soon as she stepped into the light, however, she realized that something was different. There were a lot more people there than before. All of the reporters were focusing on one section of the benches. Many questions could be heard and lots of camera flashes were going off. Skyler tried to see what was going on but she couldn’t since too many reporters were in the way. So she just sat down. However she was still interested so she stared at the group of people trying to catch a glimpse of who they were fawning over. Then one of the reporters moved a bit and Skyler got to see who was in the crowd. She gasped. ‘It’s him. He is her.’ She thought. Then she caught his eye and he gave a small smile and nodded. She quickly turned her head and faced the judges’ bench which was empty, but she couldn’t help smiling herself.
The judge walked in and the courtroom settled down as they stood up.
“You may sit,” the judge said. Then Skyler’s lawyer stood and said:
“Your honor the defense would like to call its next witness.”
“Very well,” the judge said as she straightened her glasses on the tip of her nose.
“The defense calls His Royal Highness, Prince Joshua Parker Whitfield to the stand.” The prince rose and walked confidently toward the stand. As he did the whole courtroom bowed their heads in respect. The bailiff walked over to him and said: “Do you swear to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help you God?”
“I do,” the prince said as he sat down. Skyler’s lawyer walked over to the witness stand and asked:
“You saw the tape of Miss Jones’ testimony, is that correct?” Skyler’s heart skipped a beat. He saw my testimony? She thought panic stricken. She didn’t know why, but this embarrassed her.
“Yes, that is correct,” Josh said.
“And having viewed this tape,” Skyler’s lawyer began, “Would you say you disagreed with anything Miss Jones said? Like something incorrect or not entirely the way you saw it?”
“No, not really.” Josh answered.
“Could you explain to the court your first impression of Miss Jones?”
“Well when I first saw her, I thought she was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen.” Josh said. Skyler felt herself blushing at this comment. “I also knew what a hard worker and devoted servant she was. She never seemed to have a toe out of line…”
“That is until she started her relationship with you, isn’t that right?” Skyler’s lawyer said.
“Counselor, you are leading your own witness against your client. I suggest you stick to the defense.” The judge interrupted.
“Yes…,” Skyler’s lawyer said. Josh had a disturbed look on his face. Typical, Skyler thought. “Maybe you could just describe your perspective on how you two became involved,” the lawyer continued.
“Well, I noticed that she was shy, and did not seem to be friends with any of the other servants, so I made sure she was the one picked to go to the Good Will Ball. After our dance before the ball, I knew there was something there. That is why I sent her the dress, because I had every intention of asking her to dance at the Ball. Our dance was really great. I just could not help myself and I kissed her. I realized then that it probably was not the best decision judging by the fact that it sent her running.” Skyler, along with a few others in the courtroom, gave a small chuckle. “But I couldn’t just forget her. So I made her my personal servant and do the gardens. Then when she and I spoke in the garden it was wonderful. I was actually a bit surprised that she was willing to talk to me. I guess underneath she was not so shy after all. I started to fall in love with her, because of our talks, that is.”
“Awwww, isn’t that sweet.” Skyler’s lawyer mocked.
“I do not appreciate your sarcastic tone, sir.” Josh said sternly.
“Er , sorry your Highness.” Skyler’s lawyer said nervously. Skyler had to clap her had over her mouth to stop from laughing. “Um, you may continue your highness.”
“Well, after she ran away from the gardens, I really was not sure what to do. I did not know what I did to scare her. So I called her into my office and apologized, but as she was leaving, I just could not take hiding my feelings anymore. So I told her about my feelings, and that really scared her. The next week I saw Duke Peterson trip her and then scream at her. I walked over and tried to stop the Duke but he kicked her and that made me furious. I yelled at the Duke and told him if I ever saw him do that again, to anyone, I would have him fired. That must have changed her mind about me because she came to me later to say that she’d like to date me.
“It took her about another two weeks to be completely friendly though. She was always nervous that someone would see us.” Then a large grin came over his face and she said: “One time when she was lifeguarding my pool, somebody shoved me in the water, accidentally I think. I hit my head on the floating water fountain and she had to rescue me and that was kind of funny.”
“Yes, I see,” Skyler’s lawyer began. “Now in Miss Jones’ testimony, she spoke of a fight you had. Would you care to explain your view of that to us?”
“Well it is interesting you asked that. I knew that I loved her almost right away. I had actually purchased an engagement ring about two weeks before. I was trying to be secretive about it so that she would be surprised. I was going to propose on the night before, but Duke Peterson came up with some emergency meeting and ruined my plans. So the next morning when Skyler was yelling at me I fought back a bit but I was really trying to stop myself form laughing because I knew that I had a plan.” With this Skyler looked up. She had no idea that any of this had happened. “And when she walked into my quarters I could tell she was a bit perturbed with me. Then she saw the flowers and candles and, the look on her face was priceless. The fact that she was completely surprised was wonderful for me. When she said yes, well that was the happiest moment of my life.”
“Interesting,” Skyler’s lawyer said. “Now, what about the day that Miss Jones was taken to prison?”
“Well I was really almost ecstatic, because I was going to announce the engagement to the public, and we would finally be able to be a normal couple. There would be no more sneaking around, Skyler would not have to be a servant anymore, and we could start our lives together. I guess we were not being too secretive after that. Well one day, we were practicing a dance for the party, and Duke Peterson came in and wanted to talk to us in my office. I immediately got a sinking feeling in my stomach.” By this time, every one in the court room could tell that this was very hard for him to say. “We went in my office and the Duke just started insulting Skyler. He was talking about law breaking. I finally just yelled at him, but then all these police came in and took Skyler away. I tried to hold her back but there were too many of them. I saw the look of terror in her eyes. It killed me. I tried to go after her but the Duke held me back. Then I completely lost it. The Duke was yelling something at me like ‘Forget about her’ or something. I just screamed, never, and took off running. I must have ran for a long time because soon I came to the wall surrounding the palace, which is about two miles away from the palace itself.
“When I got back, a few depressing hours later, the Duke was standing in my office with all my advisors. They all looked sort of depressed. Especially Miss Holly, who looked like she had been crying. Anyway, they told me what Skyler was being charged with. I said that we had to defend her. Then the Duke looked as if he was smiling when he said that we could not defend her. I inquired why and he said that if I tried to defend her that he would have to press charges against me. I said that he did not have anything against me. He also said that it would make me look bad in the public’s eye.” Then suddenly he looked up. He looked so angry and distraught. Then he said: “Well, I don’t care what happens to me. All I care about is her. And nothing will ever change that. Skyler is guilty of nothing, NOTHING!” His voice trailed off…
“No further questions your Honor.” Skyler’s lawyer said.
“Well, Your Highness,” the prosecutor began. “I’m going to ask you the same question that I asked Miss Jones. If you could, would you go back and change any of the choices you made?”
“No.” Josh said firmly.
“You are dismissed, Your Highness.” The Judge said. “This court is adjourned until after lunch.” The Judge added with a bang of her gavel. Everybody slowly filed out of the courtroom.
After lunch the judge began by asking:
“Does the defense have any more witnesses?”
“The defense rests, your Honor.” Skyler’s lawyer stated.
“Very well, Mr. Prosecutor, you may proceed.” The judge said.
“Thank you. The prosecution calls Duke Vladimir Peterson to the stand.” The prosecuting attorney said as he stood up. He’s here? Skyler thought. She had not seen him. Skyler spun around as the doors to the court room burst open with a great bang. Duke Peterson was a rather short man with thinning hair. His sharp features were partially masked by a mustache and a goatee that almost touched his shirt collar. Skyler could not help glaring at him as he took his seat upon the witness stand.
“Good day Duke,” the prosecutor began. “I trust you are well?”
“Yes, I am.” The Duke replied.
“Could you please describe to the court how you found out about the relationship between his Highness and Miss Jones?”
“I was always suspicious of that girl, right from the beginning.” The Duke said as he eyed Skyler. “Then I noticed she was hanging around his Highness’ office frequently. I confronted his Highness on several occasions. However, he just brushed me off and told me to forget about it. But, I knew better. I even saw them sneaking off to the garden once. So I tried to talk to the girl. But, his Highness would not hear of that. He saw me and just started yelling at me for no reason. Then I saw them.” The duke added with disgust. “I was just going into his Highness’ office to discuss some important documents and I heard him and a woman laughing. Being the gentleman that I am, I did not want to intrude, so I began to back away from the door. Unfortunately, the floor creaked. I saw them look toward the noise and I saw her face and was shocked. The very next day I told the prince that he was making a big mistake. I told him that he was dealing with something dangerous. I told him it could ruin him. Then I remember his exact works. ‘Leave it alone,’ he said to me with great furry. I was afraid that he was going to hit me or something.” Skyler was livid. The Duke was flat out lying. She glanced over at Josh, who seemed to be angrier than her, if that was possible.
“I even confronted the girl, but she threatened me.” Skyler had had enough; she jumped up suddenly and yelled:
“That’s a lie!” She was yanked downward by her lawyer, who looked very perturbed. The judge banged her gavel.
“Miss Jones will please stay silent or be removed from the courtroom. You may continue.” The judge said to the Duke who had a satisfied smile on his face. He had won, Skyler thought dejectedly. He had wanted her to get angry and yell and she did.
“You see,” the Duke continued. “She will do or say anything to get her way…” The Duke continued on. With every sentence he seemed to be nearly escaping death. He was quickly becoming the hero, trying to save two love-struck idiots from their impending doom. He was making himself look like a saint trying to save his country from a woman who was a greedy, wicked person who wanted to steal the crown. When he was finished, it took all of Skyler’s strength not to breakdown in tears. They were doomed, she thought.
“Would you care to cross examine the witness?” The judge asked Skyler’s lawyer.
“No,” he replied.
“Mr. Prosecutor do you have a closing statement?” the judge asked.
“Your Honor, esteemed members of the jury, Skyler Jones is guilty. She was aware and warned of the rules she was breaking, but ignored them. She knows what she did was wrong and she shows no remorse. We all heard her say she wouldn’t change her decision. She is guilty. That is all.”
“Does the defense have a closing argument?”
“No, your Honor.” Skyler’s lawyer replied.
“Are you sure?” The judge asked; she seemed surprised.
“Yes,” her lawyer said.
“Very well, this court is in recess until the jury returns with its decision. Court adjourned.” The judge said.
As Skyler walked back to the prison, she could not hold back tears any longer. After to Duke’s damning testimony and her own lawyer not even giving a closing statement, she was doomed. The jury would defiantly find her guilty.

By the time Friday had come, there was no new news. The jury was still out. Skyler could hardly take the suspense. All she thought about was her future. She would pace around her cell wondering about her life. Would she ever see Josh again? What would happen to her if she was found guilty? How long would she be in prison? What would she do when she got out? How would she find a job? But most of all, where did she belong? Sunday, however, brought change.
After morning exercise, one of the girls came back from a visit with one of her relatives carrying something. Skyler was not interested though, she was busy worrying. Soon her cell area was surrounded by a buzz of conversation.
“Let me see that paper,” Skyler’s cellmate said.
“Hey,” someone yelled. Skyler looked up as a scrap of paper hit her arm.
“Isn’t this you?” Skyler’s cellmate asked shoving the newspaper in her face. Skyler took the paper and sat up slowly. The headline read: Jury Walks on Royal Case, underneath there was a small faded picture of her next to a large, bold, color picture of the prince in his crown.
“Well is that you?” A woman across the hall asked. Skyler nodded her head. She had no words. She hadn’t thought of this. She had no idea her face was plastered all over newspapers and TV.
“It’s her”
“Oh I can not believe it.”
“Right here.”
Soon a plethora of questions could be heard.
“What is the prince like?”
“What is the palace like?”
“What were you thinking, are you crazy?”
Skyler didn’t hear any of them though. She was off in her own little world. The whole country knew about her. But, did they know the truth? She wondered. Also, did they support her and the prince or did they take the Duke’s point of view? One voice then came into focus.
“Hey, everybody quiet down.” It was her cellmate. Skyler looked up and saw the woman standing next to her. “Are you OK?” She asked.
“No, I don’t think so.” Skyler said as she sat down on her cot. This was the first time she remembered speaking to anyone in the prison.
“Are you worried bout what that Duke said about you?” She inquired.
“How do you know…?” Skyler asked. The woman walked over to her own cot and pulled out a stack of papers.
“My friend sends me the transcripts of what happens in the courts.” She said.
“So you knew all along about me?” Skyler wondered.
“Well I didn’t know, but I guessed.” She said with a smile. They were interrupted by a jail officer coming to her cell door. He shoved a plain envelope though the bars toward her. Skyler took the envelope and he immediately left. She unfolded the letter and it read:

Miss Jones,
I need to speak with you about something regarding you trial. I
will send someone to get you at nine o’clock Monday morning.
Judge Millicent White

Sure enough, a man came and took Skyler at nine o’clock sharp Monday morning. She was taken in a car to a building about 5 miles away. As the man led her into the building and down a hall, people pointed and stared at her. At the end of the hall, they came to a door that had Judge Millicent White written on it in gold letters. Inside there was a small room with a woman behind a desk. She must be the secretary, Skyler thought.
“You may go in to the Judge’s office Miss Jones.” The woman behind the desk said as she gestured toward a door to her right. Skyler stepped through the door and the man followed her. The judge’s chamber was fairly large. The Judge’s desk was at the other end of the room in front of two floor-to-ceiling windows that had deep red drapes. On the walls there were several pictures. To the left there was a great fireplace. In front of the desk there was a leather sofa and on either side of the sofa were two leather chairs; all were the same color as the drapes. The Judge looked up as they entered the room.
“Ah, Miss Jones, please have a seat.” The Judge said gesturing toward the couch. The Judge got up and walked over to Skyler. Skyler began to walk toward the couch, but the Judge stopped her. “Wait a second please. Sir, please take these chains off this woman.”
“But, I have orders…”
“I don’t care,” the judge said. “She is not going to run away. Now take the chains off of her.” Reluctantly the man walked over to Skyler and unchained her. Then Skyler walked slowly to the couch and sat on one side. The Judge then said something to the man, Skyler didn’t know what, but he then left. After that, the Judge sat back down behind her desk. She smiled at Skyler, and then said, “We shall begin shortly.” Then the Judge’s secretary opened the door. “Oh, I will be right back.” The Judge said to Skyler then slipped out the door.
In about five minuets, the Judge re-entered the room. “Miss Jones,” she began. “I am now going to ask you a few questions. Now in a few minuets another person will enter the room, however I ask you not to turn around when they do. Do you understand?” Skyler nodded her head. “Well I must say I was a bit disappointed in the trial. There was much conflicting information. So, I am trying to get the facts straight. I must remind you that you are under oath so please tell the complete truth. First, did the Duke ever contact you about his feelings about your relationship with his Highness or the illegality of your actions?”
“No he did not.” Skyler replied.
“Ah I suspected so,” the Judge said. “Were you, at any point, aware that your actions were unlawful?”
“No, I was not.” Skyler answered.
“I see. Has his Highness ever treated you poorly?” The judge asked.
“What do you mean?”
“Well, has he ever abused you, verbally or other wise?”
“Oh, no.” Skyler said. “Never.”
“Has the duke? Answer truthfully now”
“Well there was the one time he kicked me.” Skyler paused. “On a few other occasions he yelled at me and threw things at me but that was with the other servants…I guess”
“Uh huh…” The Judge began. Then the door creaked open. The Judge looked up quickly the looked back at Skyler. Skyler resisted the urge to turn around. “Now, just one more thing, do you really love the Prince or is it just, well, not love?”
“No, Yes, I mean… Yes, yes of course I love him. I mean he changed my life.”
“How so?” The Judge inquired.
“Well I just mean… I don’t know. He helped me become who I am in a way. He helped me see that not every one is bad and that true happiness was possible. It’s hard to explain…It’s a feeling. Like you fit perfectly. In the right place at the right time and that’s how I feel when I’m around him. ” Skyler’s voice trailed off. “I just know that I am truly meant to be with him.”
The Judge smiled then looked up at the person behind Skyler. She gestured toward the empty seat next to Skyler and said “You may now have a seat.” Skyler heard foot steps behind her. She turned to see who it was and saw Josh. She did not know whether to bow or not. However, she decided to bow since she was in the presence of a Judge and all. So, Skyler slid off the couch into a bow.
“Please sit up here.” Josh said quietly. Skyler sat back on the couch nervously. Skyler was a bit embarrassed that Josh had heard what she said about him.
“Well I’m sure that you are aware of the situation we are in, you Highness?” The Judge asked.
“Yes, I am.”
“Well I’ll explain it again, for Miss Jones’ sake. It seems that we now have no jury.” Skyler’s mind went back to the newspaper article. Now she wished that she had read it. “It seems that the jury found to too difficult to decide a verdict. They said that there may have been evidence that lead toward a guilty verdict but, they felt that it was not entirely valid and not enough to break up, what I believe they called such a strong romance.” The judge paused for a moment and took off her glasses that were placed at the tip of her nose. “That leaves the decision in my hands. You Highness I need to ask you a few more questions. Is that alright?”
“Yes of course”
“You will have to bear with me a moment her Miss Jones. Now your Highness, did you find that some of the statements made in the court were false?”
“Yes”
“Did the Duke ever confront you about his concern of you breaking any laws?”
“No he did not.”
“Yes, I see.” The judge said. She then looked up at the two people on the couch in front of her. They were sitting as far apart as possible. She could tell that they were avoiding each others eyes but longing to look at each other. “If you will excuse me for a moment,” the Judge began, “I need to get something from my secretary.” Getting up to walk away, she added, “And if anything needs to be, um, said between the two of you, feel free…” With a sly smile the Judge left the room. There were a few moments of awkward silence. The prince then looked over at Skyler who had a single tear run down her cheek. She was paler and thinner than he remembered. Her face looked like it had aged a bit. He guessed it was from all the worrying she had done. Josh guessed that he looked older too. He had spent many sleepless nights worrying about her over the past two months. He reached over and touched her hand. It scared her and she jumped. He then said:
“Are you ok? I mean how are you?” Skyler just shook her head. “Hey, it’s me. You can talk to me.”
“No,” Skyler said holding back tears, “It’s not the same everything is different now.”
“The only thing that is different is that we are separated by a little bit farther distance, nothing else has changed.”
“I just don’t know if I can take much more of this…I’m just not strong enough.” Skyler said with a sob.
“Yes you are.” Josh said. “Hey, look at me. You are strong, we will get through this.” Josh kissed her forehead just as the Judge stepped through the door. Skyler quickly wiped the tears from her eyes and sat up straight.
“I trust that we are OK now?” The judge said as she sat behind the bench. “Just a few more things, this will be completely off the record. Miss Jones, how has your jail experience been? I realize that jail isn’t the best of places to be but as far as jail goes…”
“Um alright I suppose.”
“Good, good. I would just like to add, just so it’s clear, that I personally feel that this whole thing is completely wrong.” With that, the occupants of the couch looked up. “A few others feel, and I most defiantly agree, that this whole trial was wrong. It is almost as if they are asking us to judge if love is right or wrong.” She paused. Skyler felt a wave of hope come over her. They had a chance now. “Unfortunately I do have to look at this trial objectively. Well I believe that is all. I will have made my decision before the week is over.”

As Skyler was going back to prison, she felt better about the trial. The judge seemed to be on their side, which was very good. When she came to her cell, all the woman around her got excited.
“What happened?” The all asked. “Did you get the verdict?”
“No,” Skyler replied. “Not yet.”
“Oh, that’s a shame.” One woman said. That night, Skyler slept well. It was probably one of the only times she slept well in prison.
Two days later, Skyler received a note that said a verdict had been reached and it would be announced Thursday morning at twelve o’clock, noon. For the rest of Wednesday, Skyler was so nervous she could hardly breathe. She just kept pacing around her cell. She did not eat anything on Thursday morning. At half past eleven, a prison guard came and unlocked her cell and handed her a package. Inside was a pale blue dress with a note. It was from Josh. The note said:
I thought you should look nice for the verdict. Have faith.
After she changed, they headed to the court room. When she stepped through the doors, lots of camera flashes went off. Skyler was glad that at least in these pictures, she wouldn’t look like a great orange pumpkin. It was the first time she had worn real clothes in a long time. Skyler sat down at her usual seat. She looked around the court room. The bench right behind where she was sitting was empty. This was unusual, because usually there were reporters sitting there, especially since today there seemed to be triple the usual number of reporters. All the reporters were standing along all the walls.
About five minuets after Skyler entered the court room, a sudden hush fell over the reporters. Skyler turned and saw people slowly bowing their heads as the Prince entered the court room. He stood in the back and spoke to one of his advisors for a moment. One man came toward the front, where Skyler was and she overheard him talking to another man.
“Thousands of people are outside. It’s a mad house.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well there are lots of people outside, all commoners. They are holding signs and banners. They all want the girl to be freed.”
“Really? That is hard to believe.”
“Well it’s true.”
Skyler smiled to herself. So the people were for her, she thought. Then Josh began to walk toward the front of the court room.
“Over here, your Highness,” a man said as he pointed toward a bench on the other side of the courtroom from Skyler.
“No, that’s ok, I’ll sit here.” Josh said as he walked over and sat behind Skyler. “Hey,” he whispered in her ear.
“Hey,” she said back.
“The dress looks good.”
“Yeah, thanks…”
“Anytime,” he said. “Hey there are tons of people outside…”
“Yeah I know, I heard.” Skyler interrupted. But, before they could say anymore, a clock rang twelve times. This is it, Skyler thought. The judge entered the court room and everybody stood up.
“You may be seated.” The judge said and everybody did so. “As you all know, the Jury could not decide on a verdict and left. So, I must decide the fait of this woman.” The judge paused. She looked down at the papers on her desk. She stared at them for a moment, and then pushed them aside. She took off her glasses and cleared her throat. “I was not going to say this, but I feel it is necessary. I believe that this trial was a crime against… well I don’t know what but this trial was not right. Whether this woman and man broke rules or not is irrelevant. Putting all class aside, they are just two people who fell in love. Is there something wrong with that? By taking them to court, they are being judged. Not for their legal actions, but for their emotional ones. This court is being asked to judge whether love is right or wrong. And, that decision should not have to be made. If I find this woman guilty, then I will be agreeing with the allegation that their love is wrong. However, if I find her innocent, will I be overlooking my original duty as a judge in this court system?” She paused and looked around the room. It appeared as thought everyone was hanging on her every word. She then sighed.
“Would the defendant please rise and approach the bench.” The judge said. Skyler slowly stood and walked toward the judge’s bench. Then the judge continued, “In the case of the State versus Skyler Jones, this court finds Miss Jones to be….not guilty.” The court room was in an uproar. Screams of joy could be heard. Skyler began to cry, not tears of sadness or pain, but of relief. She turned to see Josh leap over the half wall separating the seats from the rest of the court room. He swept her up in his arms and spun around.
“We won!” He shouted.
“Order, ORDER!” The Judge yelled as she banged her gavel furiously. Everybody quieted down a bit, but mummers could still be heard amongst the reporters. “Miss Jones is free to go and I would just like to add, good luck you two.” She said smiling at Skyler and Josh who were embracing. “Court dismissed” The Judge said then walked out of the courtroom.
Josh and Skyler pushed their way out of the court room and outside. When they reached the front steps, a deafening roar from the crowd could be heard. Skyler squinted her eyes from the bright sun. It was a beautiful day, Skyler noticed. With a kiss, Josh walked Skyler to a waiting car. Skyler smiled contently as she took one last look at the group of screaming people. She finally knew where she belonged.

oooook the second part -- but this is only the first part of it ;) (mainly cuz its REALLY long)

Not Quite a Fairytale

As she stepped out of the doorway and onto the well-lit aisle, Skyler’s heart skipped a beat. It had taken so long and been so hard to get here, to today, her wedding day. As she slowly made her way toward the front of the church, her perfect white gown with lace and beads rustled with every step. She tightened her grip on her bouquet of blue flowers as she caught sight of him at the alter, her prince. In the background, she could hear the church bells ringing and somewhere a piano and orchestra were playing the Wedding March. She looked up and around at the magnificent cathedral she was walking though. The windows were alive and colorful with beautiful stained glass creations. Also, there were sculptures from hundreds of years ago adorning the walls. This is the perfect day, she thought. She slowed down and stopped when she stood next to him at the front of the church. Just as the minister picked up his Bible and began to open his mouth to speak, a loud bang came from behind as the great door to the room opened.
“Freeze, nobody move! This is the royal police,” a man said with a booming voice. She inched her head around to see the police with guns drawn.
“What is the meaning of this?” The man beside her inquired angrily.
“We are here to arrest … her!” The man pointed directly at the bride and she felt someone grab her from behind. She dropped her bouquet and began to scream.

Skyler awoke with a start. She sat bold upright in bed. She broke out in a cold sweat while saying to herself, ‘It was just another dream.’ She had been having these wedding nightmares frequently over the past few weeks. Skyler looked at the clock beside her bed; 5:15 AM read the green glow of the lights on the clock. Slowly, Skyler got out of bed and put on her robe. She walked out onto the balcony adjoined to her room. The night air was cool and there was a slight breeze. Things had sure changed since her trial, but they were not necessarily bad or good. When she returned, the prince gave her a new job; he promoted her to head of all the servants. Skyler was glad she was not scrubbing floors anymore but the servants, even the ones who were her friends before, did not like her very much. Skyler did not understand why because, after all, she had not changed; only her job had. Things with Josh were … OK. They no longer had to hide their feelings or relationship but things had slowed down for them in the past few months. Josh was very busy making treaties with foreign nations. They had not even set a date for their wedding, nor even talked about it in the past few weeks.
Other things had changed too. Duke Peterson was fired shortly after Skyler’s return. The reason for his departure was not entire certain, the only know information was that he was involved in some type of scandal. The prince also got a new royal advisor, Sir Louis Bernard. He also did not care for Skyler too much. From what she could gather, he sided very much with Duke Peterson during the whole trial fiasco.
“But other than that things are good,” Skyler said to herself as she watched the orange-yellow sun creep over the horizon. “Today will be a very busy day, as usual. I’d better get ready.” Skyler thought as she headed off to her room to change.

After she was dressed, Skyler made her way downstairs to the kitchen. Her room was temporarily located upstairs in the guest wing because her usual room in the servant wing was being repaired after a small fire had damaged it and the room next to it. (A candle had fallen and was unnoticed until it was too late to stop the fire from spreading.) As she walked in to the kitchen, it fell silent.
Probably talking about me, Skyler thought to herself. She waked to the counter and grabbed a bagel and a cup of coffee and sat down at the table where most of the servants were gathered eating their breakfast. She reviewed the orders for the day and when she was finished, she heard someone on the other side of the room mumble something that caused a chuckle to arise from the people in that area. Skyler was glad she did not hear what had been said; for she was sure it was a derogatory comment. After she finished her breakfast, Skyler started out the door. She felt the people still left in the room watch her go. Just as she had taken a few steps outside the door, she remembered she left her notebook in by her seat. Before she walked back in to get it she stopped because she heard familiar voices talking.
“… Can you believe her?” Said one woman
“I know she thinks she is so special, just because she is dating the prince and got a big promotion,” the other said mockingly.
“Don’t forget, she is ‘engaged’ to his royal highness.”
“Do you think she would have gotten that promotion if the prince didn’t feel sorry for her being in prison for so long?”
“No, never.” The first woman said with a laugh.
Skyler recognized these voices as two of the maids she worked with, Sara and Kaitlyn. When she had first come to the palace, they befriended her and were never, ever mean to her. Now they are mocking her behind her back. Skyler could feel tears coming on so she ran all the way out to the garden.
When she was almost to the pool she slowed her sprint to a walk. She loved walking around the gardens and pools; it gave her a sense of peace and serenity. Skyler sat down on the edge of the pool and took off her shoes and put her feet in the water. The water was cool and refreshing. Skyler was not sure how long she stayed there, but she knew she had to go back to work sometime. After putting her shoes back on she looked at her watch. It was 10:00 AM. She still had two hours before her lunch with Josh. So, she decided to make her rounds by checking up on the servants work. She walked into the ballroom. There were workmen there trying to get the chandeliers and sculptures read for the ball. After walking through almost every room in the house and finding it spotless, as usual, she went to her room to change for lunch. As she opened the door and entered the room, she saw a single rose lying on her pillow. It immediately brought a smile to her face, for she knew who had given it to her.
After changing she went down to the kitchen and was informed that lunch would be served out on the patio. Outside, it was a beautiful May afternoon. The sun was shining high in the sky, the birds were chirping merrily, and it seemed every flower in the garden around the patio was in full bloom. Josh was not there yet so Skyler paced the patio in anticipation. It had been almost a week since they had eaten a meal together. Of course part of that time Josh had spent in Spain so it was not entirely his fault. He was working on some political project. Skyler did not know what it was and knew better than to ask, sill she wished she knew at least something about the thing that was consuming all his time. Skyler heard footsteps and murmuring in the hall.
“Hello darling,” Josh said as he exited the hall. He came over and kissed her quickly on the cheek and then continued his conversation. It was not until he started speaking again did Skyler realize another man had accompanied him onto the patio. He was tall with a dark complexion. His hair was almost black, as were his eyes.
“Senor Whitfield,” The man began with a thick Spanish accent. “Perhaps we should continue our conversation another time.”
“Very well, “Josh replied. “Adios, Senor Sanchez.” Skyler desperately wanted to ask who Senor Sanchez was, but she did not. “Well let’s take our seats.” Josh said to Skyler. They sat down and there were a few moments of silence until Josh finally said, “So, how was your day?”
“Um, it was ok, but…” Skyler was interrupted by one of the servants bringing their lunch. “So how was your trip?” She inquired eagerly after the servant had left.
“Oh you know same old, same old.” Josh said nonchalantly.
“Well, I mean, what was Spain like? I’ve never been there, is it … nice…?” Skyler’s voice trailed off. She could tell Josh wan not listening to her because he seemed very preoccupied with the food on his plate. “Josh, are you OK?” she asked lovingly.
“What? Oh yeah, I’m fine… I was just thinking about business, that’s all. Sorry, I wasn’t really paying attention to you… what were you saying?” Josh said.
“Oh nothing, never mind,” Skyler said with disappointment. For the next few minutes they ate in silence, until the butler interrupted them.
“Excuse me your highness, but there is a very urgent call for you,” he said.
“All right, Niles, I shall take it in my office.” Josh said as he got up. “Excuse me,” he said to Skyler, “But this should not take very long,” Skyler sighed as he walked away. It seemed he never had time to spend with her anymore. Skyler sat quietly eating her food all by herself.
By the time Josh returned, Skyler had finished eating. “Sorry that took so long, Skyler, but it was very important.”
“That’s ok,” Skyler said even though it was not the truth.
“Well, it seems I have some bad news,” Josh began. “I must return to Spain immediately.” Skyler could not hold her disappointment in any longer.
“Aw, you’re kidding…why?” she asked.
“You know I’m doing business there. I’m sorry but I really must go. I leave in the morning. Make sure to come and say goodbye. See you later.” Josh said as he left the patio.

Skyler had to put her disappointment aside, because that afternoon she had to interview candidates for a new cook that is being hired. The first interviewee arrived around 1:30 PM and 2 boring hours later Skyler was finally done interviewing people. She was so glad, but at least she found a new cook, a woman in her late 40’s with graying hair and 5 children. Maybe this woman won’t hate me, Skyler thought.
After Skyler ate a quick dinner, she had to plan the work schedules for the upcoming week. Skyler always hated doing schedules, mainly because they made people hate her even more. No one ever liked the jobs they had to do or the hours they had to work.
“We all have other lives and families,” they always say. “Why can’t you make our schedules work?” Some times Skyler almost wished she was still a maid and did not have to deal with people complaining to her constantly. Almost that is. Skyler even made a suggestion box where people could put in the hours and jobs they would not mind working and then she could try and stick to those as best as possible, however that only worked for a short period of time. In the end, no one was ever happy with the hours they had to work. By the time Skyler finished her scheduling it was 1 AM. Skyler was exhausted. As she was putting away the papers she was working with, her eyes came across a calendar with a date circled and labeled ‘ball’. It was not until then that she realized that the prince had not formally asked her to the ball. Skyler thought they were going together, after all they were engaged, but what if he found someone else to take, Skyler asked herself. What if it was one of the Spanish princesses who were prettier than her that he was taking, she wondered. As Skyler was getting ready for bed she kept trying to think of a logical reason for Josh not inviting her to the ball. After all he was very busy and he had a lot of things on his mind. I’ll go talk to him tomorrow, Skyler thought as she climbed into bed. Even though she tried to convince herself it was just a mistake, she could not help feeling sad.

The next morning, Skyler awoke very early. She had not slept well, but she knew she had to speak with the prince before he left for Spain. She was waiting outside his office door when he arrived.
“Good Morning Skyler,” Josh said hurriedly as her brushed her cheek with a kiss.
“Hello,” Skyler replied nervously. “Listen, um, there was something I wanted to speak with you about before you left. I know your busy and in a hurry, but it will just take a second.”
“Yes, what is it?” Josh said while reading the memos on his desk.
“Well,” Skyler paused. She did not want to come right out and tell him she hadn’t been invited. After all it could have just been a mistake and she did not want to be mean. She also did not want to sound really needy and desperate.
“So, do you have any plans for two weeks from this weekend?” Skyler decided to go with a subtle approach.
“Hmm, two weeks . . .” Josh paused as he tried to go through his busy schedule. “Oh,” Josh laughed. “You’re funny . . . “
“What?” Skyler gasped.
“Well that’s when the ball is silly. You know that’s what we’re going to do then.”
“What do you mean?” Skyler was surprised he said ‘we’re’.
“Okay, wait, I’m confused” Josh looked puzzled. “Didn’t I ask you to the ball?”
Skyler looked down at her feet and played with her hair nervously. “Um, not exactly.”
“Oh my gosh, I’m so stupid!” Josh said as he walked toward her. “Wow, I’m so, so, so sorry I really want to go with you and I’ve just been so busy I guess I just thought I asked you. Wow I feel so dumb and mean. . . “
“No, its OK, it’s not your fault. I understand that you very busy, really it’s OK,” Skyler knew that Josh was busy but it still hurt that he had forgotten about asking her to the ball.
“You are so great, you know that?” Josh said with a smile.
“Yeah I know, but you can feel free to tell me anytime you want,” Skyler grinned. Josh gave her a hug and a kiss and then said:
“Well I have to go or I’ll miss my flight.”
“No you won’t, it’s a private jet.” Skyler joked.
“Yeah, that’s true . . . Love you, bye!” Josh said as he walked out the door.
“I love you too. . . “Skyler said but Josh did not hear her, he had already shut the door.

To Skyler, the next week was a blur. She had so much to do she did not know if it was even possible to get it all done. She had to find all the caterers, decorators, and musicians for the ball. Day after day, she had bands coming to audition and caterers bringing her food to sample. Every caterer and decorator in the country must want this job, she thought to herself. But, by Friday she had a band booked, the caterer scheduled and a decorator coming in five days, and with the ball in just a week and a day, that was a good thing. By Friday night Skyler was exhausted. She had done so much planning. The people she was working with were not very cordial either, and that made it much worse. She dreaded every day interviewing rude French chefs and snotty band leaders. But, all of that was finally over. Skyler barely had the energy to change into her pajamas before collapsing on her bed and falling directly asleep at 7 P.M.

When Skyler’s alarm went off at 7 A.M Saturday morning she could not believe it. Even though she had gotten nearly twelve hours of sleep, it did not feel like nearly enough. Groggily, she crawled out of bed and slowly put on her robe before shuffling sleepily over to the door. In front of the door Skyler found an envelope with her name on it. It must have been shoved underneath the door, she thought to herself. She opened it up and found a note that said:
Meet me in my office at 9 o’clock sharp. Josh
Even though she knew it was just a stupid note, Skyler could not help smiling. She was glad Josh was back. She hurried off to get dressed so she would not be late for her meeting with Josh.
At 8:58 Skyler was waiting outside Josh’s office. She quickly fixed her hair before knocking on the door; after all it had been a week since she had seen him.
“Come in,” Josh said when he heard her knock. Skyler opened the door and walked quickly into the office. “Oh hello Skyler, won’t you please have a seat.” He said pointing to the chair in front of his desk.
“Thank you,” Skyler said as she sat down. “So, how was your trip?”
“Oh, not bad, mostly business, you know,” Josh replied.
“Yes, of course.” Skyler said. Josh was busy writing things and shuffling through the papers all over his desk. After a few moments of silence Skyler said, “If you’re too busy I can come back later.”
Josh stopped writing and looked up at Skyler. He smiled then walked around his desk to sit next to her. “I’m sorry,” he said, “I’m being awfully rude.”
Skyler looked away and shrugged her shoulders. Yes he was being rude but Skyler did not want to insult him.
“I have been told you did an excellent job planning the ball this past week.” He said.
“Really?” Skyler perked up at this comment and looked at him.
“Yup,” Josh smiled. “Thank you so much. I do not know how I would have done it with out you.”
“Anytime,” Skyler laughed.
“So,” Josh said as he got up and walked back behind his desk. “As a thank you, I made you an appointment at the boutique in the city so you could get a beautiful new gown for the ball.”
“Seriously?” Skyler yelled. She was very shocked.
“Of course. You have to look your absolute best. After all you are marrying the Prince.”
“Thank you so much!” She smiled as she gave him a hug.
“Your welcome. Your appointment is at one P.M. on Monday. Here is the address.” Josh said while handing her a business card. “Now, I want you to make sure to get whatever you want because it’s all on me.”
“Oh, but. . . “ Skyler began
“No buts, I insist.” Josh smiled. Skyler smiled back. She said goodbye because she had lots of work to do but the smile would not come off her face for the rest of the weekend; she was absolutely thrilled to go shopping on Monday.
All Monday morning Skyler could not focus at all. She was so excited to go and buy a dress she could hardly stand it.
At almost exactly the time Josh had said, Skyler rushed outside and found a car waiting to take her shopping. She got in and felt so special. Traffic was very bad so they arrived at the store a few minutes late. Skyler got out and stared up at the sign outside the store that read “Karley’s Boutique”. Skyler stepped inside and the sales women gave her a strange look.
“May I help you?” She asked in a disgusted tone.
“Yes, I have an appointment.” Skyler replied politely.
“Name?”
“Skyler Jones”
“Oh,” the woman said sweetly, “Yes of course. Right this way Miss Jones.” The sales woman, whose name tag read ‘Joan’, took Skyler back into a more private room. “Please have a seat,” she said pointing to a soft padded bench. “I’ll be right with you,” the woman said as she left the room through a curtain on the one wall. Joan returned shortly with another woman trailing behind her dragging and cart full of dresses.
“Would you care for something to drink, Miss Jones?” Joan asked.
“No thank you.” Skyler replied.
“My name is Joan and this is my assistant Darcy and we will try our best to find the perfect gown for you.” Skyler smiled and nodded her head. She really was not sure how to act around these people. “Now,” Joan continued. “Did you have any certain type of dress in mind?”
Skyler thought for a moment before responding. “Um, no, not really.”
“Well that’s ok, dear, that is our job.” Joan giggled. “Would you like a dress in any certain color?”
“Well, I’m not really sure what would be appropriate for the event,” Skyler began. “But I do particularly like blue or perhaps red.”
“Alright then”
Skyler spend the next hour trying on dress after dress. Most of the dresses did not fit her at all. They were either too big one place and too small another or just big in general. There was one dress that fit her very well but Skyler did not like the sick yellow color of the fabric. Skyler was quickly losing her patience with the sales ladies. She could tell they were only being nice to her because they felt obligated to be nice to her. Probably because they are getting paid a lot of money, Skyler thought. Just as Skyler was about to give up hope the sales woman said:
“Excuse me one minute; I have one dress in the back that just might work.” She returned a few minuets later with the most beautiful dress Skyler had ever seen. It was a navy blue, strapless dress with fabric that glittered a lot when the light caught it. Skyler knew immediately it was the perfect dress, only she hoped it fit. “So do you want to try it?” Joan asked seeing the look on Skyler’s face when she saw the dress. Skyler just nodded her head in agreement.
Skyler put on the dress and stood in front of the mirrors on the wall and was amazed. Even though her hair was a mess the dress still made her look perfect. And surprisingly enough it fit perfectly. The flowing skirt just touched the floor and would be the perfect length with shoes on.
“You know,” Joan began. “I think that dress might just work.”
“It looks perfect.” Darcy said.
“Do you have shoes for the dress?” Joan inquired.
“No, I don’t.” Skyler sighed.
“Well I just got some in, they might have a heel that is too high but we shall see.” Joan said as she went into the back of the store. She came back with shoes that were exactly like glass slippers because they were entirely clear. They defiantly make the outfit complete Skyler thought once she had them on.
“You know, that dress would look nice if you had a pendant necklace to wear with it,” Darcy pointed out.
“Yeah I have something like that.” Skyler said thinking of the simple necklace Josh had given her right after her trial. On the drive home Skyler could not wait until she could get home and try on her dress again.

On Saturday morning, Skyler received a note from Josh saying that she could use one of the upstairs guest rooms to get ready for the ball. The note also informed Skyler that she was to meet Josh at the top of the main stairs right before 6 o’clock so they could make their grand entrance together.
Skyler was so excited she was beside herself. She could not believe this day was finally here. Skyler thought she should have some help with her hair; after all she wanted to look perfect. She found her old friend, Kaitlyn, in the kitchen organizing crystal glasses on the table.
“Kaitlyn, could I speak with you for a moment please?” Skyler asked cautiously.
“Yes,” Kaitlyn said without looking up from her work.
“Well, I, uh, was just wondering if you, um, might want to be willing to help me get ready for the ball tonight.” Skyler asked quietly.
“Well, I’m very busy here. . . “Kaitlyn began.
“Well it would not be until later this afternoon, like around 4:30.” Skyler added.
“I suppose that would be OK.” Kaitlyn reluctantly agreed.
“Alright, great. Um, meet me in the hall at 4:30 sharp OK?”
“Sure, whatever.” Kaitlyn said. Skyler skipped out of the kitchen to go up stairs and admire her beautiful gown for a while.
At 4:30, dressed in just a robe and slippers with her hair dripping wet, because she had just gotten out of the shower, Skyler found Kaitlyn in the hall and quickly dragged her upstairs before anyone saw her.
“Oh you look . . . good.” Kaitlyn laughed.
“Thanks,” Skyler replied sarcastically over the noise of her hair dryer. When she was done drying her hair, she came out of the bathroom to find Kaitlyn admiring her dress. Skyler stood and watched her for a moment. Kaitlyn seemed to look at each and every inch of it.
“OK,” Skyler began. Kaitlyn was startled by Skyler and she jumped. “I’m sorry did I scare you?” Skyler asked.
“No, no. I’m fine.” Kaitlyn said quickly. The next 45 minuets were fairly silent. Skyler put on her make up and put her hair up on the top of her head with Kaitlyn’s help. Then at around 5:20 Skyler took her dress into the bathroom to put it on.
“I don’t hate you, you know.” Kaitlyn said.
“What?” Skyler said as she poked her head out of the door.
“Contrary to popular belief, I don’t hate you,” Kaitlyn said again.
“Oh well. . . I didn’t. . . “Skyler stuttered from inside the bathroom.
“I know I have not been very nice to you since the whole ‘incident’, but I’m just jealous, that’s all.” Kaitlyn sighed.
“Jealous?” Skyler asked, even though she knew the answer as to why she was jealous.
“Oh come on Skyler, you have the perfect life, a storybook romance, rags to riches, servant to princess. . .”
“Yeah, well, deep down maybe it’s not so perfect. . . “Skyler’s voice trailed off.
“What do you mean?” Kaitlyn asked curiously.
“Oh never mind. . .” Skyler said as she emerged from the bathroom. “So, what do you think?” Skyler said as she spun around in her gown.
“You look unbelievably amazing.” Kaitlyn said as her face lit up at the sight of her friend. Kaitlyn was proud and happy for Skyler, even though she was still a bit jealous. “I’m sorry I was a bad friend.”
“That’s OK, I forgive you” Skyler said as she gave Kaitlyn a hug. Skyler walked slowly over to the floor-to-ceiling mirror on the wall. She had to admit she looked the best she had ever looked. Kaitlyn came up behind her and handed her the necklace she was going to wear. After Skyler put it on she realized it kind of looked stupid. It barely even shimmered while her dress was so sparkly it was almost annoying. Skyler heard some noise outside and peeked out the window. Outside a few of the guests were beginning to arrive. All of the women looked stunning. They all had elegant fur coats, which Skyler was mad at because she felt fur was wrong. But, they were all covered in sparkling diamonds. Skyler looked back in the mirror at her tiny necklace and felt very out of place. Skyler sighed as she turned away from the mirror.
“I don’t know, maybe this whole thing was stupid. I just don’t belong. They are all royals and I’m just a servant.”
“Hey, no your not and no one will think that either,” Kaitlyn said reassuringly, even though deep down she knew that that was not true. “Now, what is really bothering you?”
Skyler told Kaitlyn the story of how the prince was so busy and barely had time for her anymore. When Skyler was finished Kaitlyn said:
“You know what it’s going to be OK; you are just going through a relationship dry spell. It happens to everyone. Oh my, look at the time.”
Skyler looked at her watch and saw that it was quarter to six already. Skyler hurried and put on her new shoes and took one more look in the mirror.
“You look great. . .” Kaitlyn began.
“. . . Just like a princess.” Josh finished. Skyler spun around. She had not heard him come in.
“Oh hello Josh,” Skyler said nervously.
“Excuse me, your highness” Kaitlyn said as she bowed and left.
“You look amazing” Josh said as he stepped toward her.
“You really think I look OK?” Skyler inquired.
“Yes, you look perfect.” Josh said with an admiring smile. “I have something for you.” Josh said as he pulled a red velvet box from behind his back.
“What is it?” Skyler asked cautiously as she approached him.
“I don’t know,” Josh said coyly. “I guess you will have to open it and see.” Skyler took the box from his hands. It was very heavy Skyler noticed. Slowly, she opened the lid. When she saw what was inside she gasped. In the box lay a beautiful diamond studded crown neatly placed on more red velvet.
“I want you to wear it tonight.” Josh said as he took it out of the box and placed it gently on her head. “Because tonight you are my princess.” After Josh secured it on her head, Skyler walked over and looked at herself in the mirror. The crown made her ensemble complete. She really did look like a princess.
“Thank you so much. It’s so beautiful.” Skyler beamed.
“You are very welcome, Princess Skyler.” Josh said as he kissed her hand. Skyler blushed. “Well, we must be on our way.” Josh said. Skyler put on her elbow length white gloves and followed Josh to the top of the stairs.
“Ready?” Josh asked.
“Ready.” Skyler replied. She had never been so nervous in her entire life combined.
“Ladies and Gentlemen,” an announcer said. “Please welcome his Royal Highness, Prince Joshua Parker Whitfield and his guest Miss Skyler Jones.”
Skyler took Josh’s arm and they made their way down the stairs and into the ball room. There were a lot of people taking pictures of them, Skyler noted. She could not have been happier if she tried though. As Skyler and Josh made their way into the ballroom, Skyler could not help gasping in amazement. The ball room looked absolutely exquisite. Every inch of it was glistening. When Skyler and Josh reached the center of the room, the music began. Josh and Skyler floated around the ballroom just as they had done, what seemed like, so many years before. So much had changed since them, but yet it still felt the same. Josh leaned over and whispered in her ear:
“This place looks wonderful, you did an amazing job.”
As the evening progressed, however, some of the magic was fading. Josh was busy talking to foreign administrators and their wives did not seem too interested in Skyler. Kaitlyn was wrong, Skyler thought, they do think I am just a servant. Josh, however, did not seem to notice the women ignoring her. Every time he greeted someone he would show her off as if she was a trophy. Then, Skyler would smile and curtsy and be very polite and the man he was speaking to would make some equally polite comment about her and then get straight to business. Even though she had danced a few times with Josh, by eight o’clock, Skyler was bored to death.
“Josh, I’m going to go take a walk,” She said. But he did not hear her. He was deep in conversation. Skyler pushed her way through the crowd. She made her way to the French doors that lead to the balcony and pushed them open. The crisp night air flowed over her as she stepped onto the balcony. Inside the ballroom was very stuff because of all the people and the outside was a nice change. Skyler waked over to the railing and peered out at the gardens that were all lit up.
Skyler took the gloves off of her hands and looked down at the diamond ring on her gloveless finger. Lately she had been wondering if Josh had made the right decision by choosing her to marry. She was not at all like the ladies at the party tonight. They were all so prim and proper and she did not really know how to act like that. She also knew that her relationship with Josh had changed. Kaitlyn could be right, she thought, but then again maybe Kaitlyn was wrong and Josh really did not feel the same way about her anymore.
Skyler remember back to the first time her and Josh had danced at one of these balls. It truly seemed like ages ago even though it was just a few years.
Skyler had been so nervous when Josh had asked her to dance. She could hardly breathe. Then, they stood out on this very balcony and talked a few moments before sharing their first kiss. She was so scared then, but it was a moment she would never forget.
Skyler walked over to the edge of the balcony. She thought she had heard something. But, she saw no one. Then suddenly she felt a sharp pain on the back of her head and everything went dark.

Skyler opened her eyes slowly. The room she was in was very dark. She heard something behind her and turned her head sharply to see what it was only to feel a searing pain in shooting through her neck. She had forgotten until then what had happened to her at the ball. The last thing she remembered was looking around the balcony and now her head hurt very much. She tried to push the hair out of her eyes, but she could not. Her hands were tied behind her back. What is going on here, Skyler thought. Where am I? As her eyes adjusted to the darkness, more of her surroundings came into focus. The dark, damp, dingy room she was in was very small. She was seated in a chair only a foot away from one corner of the room. To her right, at the top of the wall, was a very small window. She tried to lead over to see out of the window and she nearly fell because her feet were bound to the chair legs. From what she could tell, though, it was still night, for outside her small window it was still dark. Skyler scanned the other side of the room looking for a door and saw something that resembled bars.
“Bars,” Skyler said quietly to herself. “But what would bars . . . “ Skyler suddenly realized something. I must be in a dungeon, she thought. Yes, that would make sense.
A chill ran up Skyler’s spine and she shivered. The dungeon was very cold. Skyler realized she was still in the dress she wore to the ball. Her feet were so cold she could barely feel them. Skyler looked down at her feet and saw that one of her shoes was missing. As she looked down her hair fell across her face again. Since her hands were tied, which meant she could not push her hair out of her face, she decided to shake her hair back out of her face. When she did so, she was suddenly panic stricken. Oh no, the crown, she thought. It defiantly was not on her head. She guessed whoever took her took her crown as well. He or she was probably going to sell it. It must be worth a lot of money, Skyler thought. After all, it was covered in diamonds.
Skyler heard a noise coming from outside of the room she was in. From where she was she could not see out the door. So, she tried to mover her chair closer. After a few attempts, Skyler was able to mover her chair a few feet toward the door, which was just enough to see out through the bars. Skyler saw someone’s feet hanging over the edge of a beat up old couch and realized that the noise that she heard was probably someone snoring. She tried to see who the person was but she could not see that far. Skyler gave up; she was very tired and her head still hurt. She decided to try and get some sleep. She hoped that in the morning she would find out more about what happened to her.

Skyler awoke to the sound of voices outside of the room she was in. She did not know how long she was asleep, but there was a small ray of light coming through the window above her. She concentrated on the voices she heard. She wanted to know who had kidnapped her. There were two voices and both sounded male.
“Are you sure?” The one man said. He had a deep, hoarse voice.
“Yes,” the other man said.
“You’re positive?”
“Yes, for the thousandth time. No on ever comes down here. I swear no on will find her.”
They are talking about me, Skyler thought
“What about clothes sir?” the second man asked.
“What do you mean?” The man with the deep voice snapped. Skyler could tell by the tone of his voice that this man was very mean and she suspected he was the one who took her.
“Well the girl, she is in that dress . . . shouldn’t she have proper clothing? I mean it gets very cold down here . . .”
“Fine,” the first man interrupted. “I will find her some clothes. But, might I remind you Mr. Sidd, that the girl is a captive and she should be treated that way. I will be back.” Skyler heard footsteps and then a door slam. She recognized the deep voice man’s voice but she could not place where from.
Skyler heard Mr. Sidd mumbling to himself out in the hall, but she could not make out what he was saying. Shortly, the door slammed open and the man’s deep voice boomed:
“Here, I hope these will suffice.” Then he left immediately. Skyler heard the footsteps of Mr. Sidd and he soon came to the door of her cell. Skyler recognized him immediately. He was one of the groundskeepers at the palace. He pulled a large iron key from his pocket and unlocked the bar door to her cell. Skyler sat up as straight as she could and tried to look very stern, although inside she was very frightened.
“Here,” Mr. Sidd said while throwing the clothes at her. “Put these on.” He turned to leave the room when Skyler said:
“How do you suppose I do that since I am tied to this chair?”
“Oh . . . right,” Mr. Sidd said as he walked behind her and started to untie her hands. “Wait . . .” he said as he left the room. Skyler was very confused until he returned with a shotgun. This scared Skyler very much because she had never had a gun pointed at her before.
“If you try to escape,” Mr. Sidd’s voice shook. “I’ll shoot you. Do you understand?” Skyler nodded her head in and Mr. Sidd finished untying her. “Now, put those clothes on so I can tie you back up.”
Skyler stood up slowly. It was difficult since she was only wearing one shoe. She almost began to change but then noticed Mr. Sidd still standing there.
“Aren’t you going to turn around?” She asked.
“Oh, yeah,” Mr. Sidd said as he turned. Skyler picked up the clothes that were thrown at her. They were stained and filthy. Reluctantly, Skyler put them on only to find that they were much too big for her. Skyler picked up her dress and folded it as neatly as she could, then Mr. Sidd grabbed it from her and tied her back to the chair. Mr. Sidd left the room and returned a moment later and threw a newspaper at her feet while laughing:
“Thought you’d like to see today’s headline.” He slammed the metal bars behind him when he left. Skyler looked down at the newspaper and saw the headline: “Princess-To-Be Abducted from Royal Ball” underneath in smaller letters it read: “Prince Devastated”.
“At approximately 8:15 PM on Saturday, Skyler Jones disappeared from the royal ball. People who attended the ball claim Miss Jones stepped out onto the balcony and never returned. The prince, after noticing that she was missing, appeared to be ‘very distraught’. He ordered a search of the entire palace. During this time, the prince did not allow any of his guests to leave the premise. After a two hour search revealed no evidence that Miss Jones was there, the prince began to question everyone in attendance, from countesses to waiters. Finally, when someone mentioned that they had seen Miss Jones out on the balcony, hope was gained. Unfortunately all that was recovered was the crown she had been wearing; which was sitting on the balcony’s railing.
““The prince appeared to be absolutely beside himself,” one eye witness recalls. “I felt so bad for the poor dear. I really wished there was more I could do for him.”
“The prince’s spokesperson declined to comment when asked about the situation . . .”
Skyler could not read anymore. She was too upset. The article did not say anything about whether or not they had any leads on her disappearance. It also did not offer any evidence that they even knew that she was kidnapped. Skyler could not bear to think about it anymore. Then the sick irony of it all finally hit her.
“I’m stuck in a prison again,” she said to herself. “Only this time, I have little hope of getting out.” Skyler hung her head and cried; it was the only thing she could do.

Skyler soon lost track of how many days had passed. Each day held the same routine. Every morning, Mr. Sidd would come and untie one of Skyler’s hands and give her breakfast. Her ‘breakfast’ consisted solely of a dry piece of bread, water, and sometimes an over ripe piece of fruit. She sat all day in the dungeon, all alone. The deep voiced man hardly ever came down and Mr. Sidd was always working around the palace all day. No one probably has any idea he is behind this, Skyler often thought. In the evening, Mr. Sidd would come back and give her dinner, which was usually not much better than her breakfast. Everyday, the same routine, and Skyler was beginning to get very bored with it.
Then one day, finally brought some excitement. Skyler must have dosed off, because she awoke to the sound of a crash. It took her a minute to figure out what happened, but when she did she saw that the window above her was broken and there was glass all over the floor. A few feet away from her lay a large rock. Skyler was so excited she could hardly contain herself. Someone will have to fix the window and when they come down they will find me! Skyler thought. Skyler heard voices outside the window.
“Now look what you did, you idiot!” One man said.
“What do you mean, it was your fault” Said another.
“Uh no? You were the one that decided to kick the rock. Aw man, now we have to fix it.”
“No we don’t. We can just walk away and pretend it never happened”
“Really?”
“Sure, come on hurry up before some one sees us”
Skyler’s heart sank as she heard footsteps walk away from the window. Now I am doomed to say down her forever, Skyler sobbed.
When Mr. Sidd noticed the broken window, he boarded it up right away.
“We don’t want anyone noticing that window and finding you now do we?” He added with a smirk.

The next morning, Skyler awoke to the sound of a television. She slowly opened her eyes to see Mr. Sidd wheeling a TV into her cell.
“Thought you’d want to see this. Your boyfriend is going to give a press conference.”
Skyler watched as the news channel broke into Josh’s conference. He walked onto the screen very slowly. Skyler thought he looked as if he had not slept in days, which probably was not far from the truth. Josh cleared his throat and began:
“As you all know, my fiancé, Skyler Jones, was abducted from a party here at my palace two weeks ago…”
Two weeks, Skyler thought. Had it really been that long
“…We have a few leads on the case, but it is too early to tell whether any of them are significant. WE are certain however, that she was kidnapped. Yesterday, we received a letter from her captor saying that he is out to destroy us for revenge. I have this news for the person or persons who have Miss Jones. I will not rest until I find out who and where you are. Justice will prevail and if you harm her in any way. . . “Josh paused. Skyler could tell he looked very distraught. “So help you God.” Josh concluded as he walked from the podium where he was standing. The reporters shouted questions at him, but he did not say a word. Mr. Sidd took the television out of Skyler’s cell without a sound.

Several more uneventful days passed, until one Friday changed everything. The morning started out just like any other, only Skyler was growing more and more annoyed with her surroundings. Then the deep voiced man came to talk to Mr. Sidd. He had only come a few times, but every time he came Skyler was sure she could figure out who he was from his voice, but she never could. Mr. Sidd and the man argued for a while. Then Mr. Sidd began complaining about Skyler.
“She’s getting more and more impossible by the day,” Mr. Sidd said. “She no longer says anything, she just gives rude stares.”
“Let me talk to her.” The deep voiced man roared. Mr. Sidd unlocked the door to Skyler’s cell and the mystery man walked into her cell. When Skyler saw his face she gasped. He was the man from her trial. He was the prosecuting attorney.
“Ah,” the man began. “I see from the look on your face that you recognize me. But, I don’t believe we have been formally introduced. My name is Spencer Bowen, but you know me better as ‘Mr. Prosecutor’. So I hear you have been giving my friend Sidd here a hard time. Now, why would a sweet little thing like you want to do that?” Bowen asked as he walked closer to her. Skyler did not answer, but she gave him a dirty look.
“Aw, why so bitter? Now, these are not the best of conditions. But, hey, you have a roof over your head and food to eat. Your living a life a luxury compared to some. Some people would kill to have what you have right here. And I do mean kill.” Bowen said with and evil grin.
“Don’t threaten me.” Skyler snapped.
“Oh you can speak! But, what are you going to do about it. You are tied to a chair.” Bowen laughed.
“Just answer me this one question. You owe me that.” Skyler said.
“Alright fine what is it?” Bowen sighed.
“Why?” Skyler inquired.
“Why? As in why did I kidnap you?” Bowen asked and Skyler nodded. “Well I’ll tell you why, because you ruined me.” Skyler had a puzzled look on her face. She did not understand.
“What do you mean?” She asked.
“Don’t you get it? Everyone loves you. You’re sweet and innocent and you fell in love with a prince. You made it. Your rose above, beat the odds, and all that felgercarb. Every little girl idolizes you. Rags to riches, it’s the perfect story. But, every fairytale has a bad guy. And that’s me. I’m sure you know that during your trial the whole freakin’ world supported you. They were all on you side, well more or less, but the smart ones, me, that Duke, and good old Sidd saw you for what you really were. A conniving, little cheat, who broke all the rules and got off for free, but, did that matter? Nooooooo. When the trial was over, everyone hated me. The booed me leaving the court room. They protested where ever I went and threw rotten eggs at my car and house. My career was ruined. I could never find work again, even the criminals supported you. The firm I worked for fired me because of all the negative press. They thought I’d ‘bring down the reputation of the company’, and every job interview I went to I was turned away because they recognized my name. I had no job and I lost my house. I was living in my car, when it hit me. Why not get a little pay back. You ruined my life, so I figured why not ruin yours. Revenge is sweet.
“So I decided to kidnap you. Once I had you I was not sure what I was going to do with you, but I knew that stupid prince would be up all nights worrying about you so I could get some cash out of him or if the whole trial was what I suspected, a publicity scam to win people’s support and he really did not care about you. . .”
“No!” Skyler interrupted.
“See, I would gain either way. So I knew I had to find someone on the inside to help me. So I eavesdropped on all the servants until I heard Sidd talking about how much he dislikes you. Then I knew I had it made. So we planned to take you a few times, but our plans were always foiled, by no fault of my own. Until the night of the ball, that is. We snuck up on the balcony when you were daydreaming and knocked you out. Then we left your crown there as a little calling card for dear Prince Joshua. So we hid you here in the dungeon of the castle because Sidd informed me that no one ever comes down here mainly because very few people even know it is here.
“So now you know, does that satisfy your curiosity?” Bowen asked. Skyler nodded in agreement. She had no idea what a crazed man Bowen was. He was clearly out of his mind. Then, Bowen left and Skyler was all alone in her cell again.

A few days later, Skyler heard voices outside her cell. Since the board was not nailed tight to the wall, she could hear the conversation very well.
“Excuse me sir, what are you doing?” The one man said. Skyler recognized his voice to be Josh’s butler, Niles.
“I just can’t take any more Niles, I can’t!” Skyler gasped, that was Josh’s voice. “Its too much I can’t handle it.”
“Do you mean the press sir?” Niles inquired gently.
“Yes, sort of. All the people asking the same questions over and over. I can’t just repeat the same non-answer. Do the police have any leads?”
“No, sir, I’m afraid they do not. They keep saying that they are working on the case but they have not come across any leads.” Niles said. So Josh lied on television, Skyler thought. The police did not know anything.
“I just do not know what to do anymore.” Josh sighed. “I just keep wondering where she is you know? I mean where is she? Is she alright? What if they hurt her Niles? I just don’t know what I’d do if something happened to her. I just couldn’t survive.”
“I know sir, I know” Niles said comfortingly. Niles and Josh continued to talk but their voices became less and less clear to Skyler. They are leaving, she thought. They are leaving me all alone.
Later that evening, Skyler was still thinking about what Josh has confessed outside her window when Spencer Bowen arrived in the dungeon. Mr. Sidd unlocked her cell door and Bowen stepped in.
“Good evening, Miss Jones,” He began sweetly, which immediately made Skyler suspicious of him, since he was not being his usual snippy self. “I trust you are well.” After a moments pause he continued.
“You know I have been thinking so hard these past few weeks to decide what I am going to do with you. And finally last night it came to me. Its perfect but I do need a few things first . . . “ Bowen’s voice trailed off as he walked toward Skyler. He began to eye the diamond ring on her finger. Skyler had not realized it was still there until he began looking at it. She was almost surprised to see it because she figured that they took it off to sell when they first kidnapped her. She closed her fist tight so he could not get the ring off. “Come on now let me have it.” Bowen said with an evil grin.
“No, its mine,” Skyler pouted.
“Well I’m not going to steal it; I just thought Prince Joshua would like it back. After all, you will not need it where you are going. It would only make people suspicious.” Bowen said.
“What do you mean?” Skyler said curiously. She did not like the way he said that.
“Oh you’ll see, but not just yet. It’s all part of my plan. Now give me the ring!” Bowen shouted. Skyler still refused. Bowen turned to Mr. Sidd and said:
“Perhaps she needs some more forceful convincing.” Mr. Sidd left the room and returned with his shot gun. He held it up to Skyler pretending to aim, although Skyler could tell he did not really want to shoot her. He only obeyed Mr. Sidd out of fear. None the less, Skyler loosened her fist and Bowen slid her ring off.
“Now that’s a good girl. Well I will be back later.” Bowen said as he left the dungeon.
Skyler had no idea what he was up to, but whatever it was, she was sure it was not good. The next few hours Skyler sat in silence while Mr. Sidd watched TV in the next room. Then Bowen returned.
“Everything ready boss?” She heard Mr. Sidd ask.
“Yes, Sidd. We are ready.” Bowen answered. The two men entered Skyler’s cell where Mr. Sidd began untying Skyler.
“What is going on?” Skyler demanded.
“Well we are taking you away from the palace.” Bowen answered.
“What? Why? Can’t you just let me go?” Skyler pleaded.
“Now, why would we do a thing like that?” Mr. Sidd laughed.
“You see, Miss Jones, we do not think it is safe to keep you here. People are beginning to grow suspicious of what Sidd is doing. The employees of the palace must undergo lie detector tests. So, we must do something with you. And to kill you, well that would be too simple. I am much smarter than that. Plus, if the Prince were to know you were dead, then that would give him closure and that is not what I want. I want him to live in wonder for the rest of his life. I want misery . . . “
“You are a sick man” Skyler interrupted.
“Why thank you Miss Jones.” Bowen grinned. “Anyway, I decided to give you sort of the ultimate ending. I feel that you have been used to this cushy lifestyle for far too long. We need to toughen you up. So I sold you.”
“I’m sorry,” Skyler was astonished. “You sold me?”
“That is correct.” Sidd answered.
“Well that is impossible you cannot sell me, you do not own me.” Skyler said.
“Well, in a way that is true.” Bowen said. “Unfortunately you have no way to prove that you are free. To the person who owns you now, you are simply just a new slave to whip into shape. And I do mean whip. You are no better than the rest of the women who crawled up to his plantation begging for work. Face it, angel, you are common, you are worthless, you are no one.”
By this time Skyler felt such rage toward Bowen she could hold back no longer. She lunged at him, but Mr. Sidd grabbed her tight from behind. She was struggling but could not get free.
“Ah, no, no, Miss Jones. You cannot escape. Now this gentleman is expecting you first thing tomorrow morning, so we must get a move on. Oh yes and here’s a little something to help you sleep.” Bowen said. Skyler felt something sharp go into her arm.
“We also don’t want you finding out where you are so you can escape . . . “Bowen’s voice slipped away. Skyler was so tired she could not hold her head up any longer.

Skyler awoke with a start. She heard something that sounded like squawking. She was very confused, because she did not really remember what had happened the night before. She sat up and began to look around. She was lying on some straw in a barn. There were chickens, ducks, and other farm birds all around her. What on earth, she thought. Then she slowly remembered Bowen and what he had said. Oh great, she thought, he sold me to a farm.
Skyler got up and walked to the barn door and slid it open. Chickens and ducks scattered as she walked out of the door. To her left, she saw a young woman feeding the chickens that were in the barn yard. Skyler approached her slowly and said:
“Excuse me”
“Oh, yeh must be the new one.” The girl said as she looked up. Skyler noticed that she could not have been older than 20, and was dressed in filthy, baggy clothes.
“I suppose so,” Skyler answered.
“Well, you better hurry on up to the house. Boss don’t like it when you late.” The girl said as she motioned to a building behind Skyler. Skyler turned in the direction the girl pointed and saw a house that was so decrepit she could not believe it was still standing. She slowly approached the back door and knocked softly. No one came to the door, so Skyler knocked again, harder this time. That time Skyler heard heavy footsteps moving toward the door. She stepped back as the door swung open. A large, filthy, un-shaven man stood in the door frame.
“Yeah?” He said with a thick accent.
“Excuse me, but I . . . “Skyler began shyly.
“Oh you’re that new one ain’t ya?” The man asked.
“Yes” Skyler answered quietly.
“Alright,” the man said. “Let me have a look at ya.” The tall man circled Skyler a few times and then proclaimed:
“Well yeh are a bit on the lean side, but I suppose you’ll have to do. However those clothes aint no good. Come inside here.” Skyler followed the man into the building. Inside was one room that was very small and cramped. There was a small fireplace in the one corner with a bed next to it and then a small stove and kitchen area on the other side of the room. The big man walked over to a chest on the floor and pulled out a work dress and apron and a pair of work boots.
“Here yeh go,” he said handing here the clothes and shoes.
“Excuse me, sir, but where shall I change?” Skyler asked politely.
“You may address me as Boss, and yeh can change behind those curtains over there. When you are through throw those old clothes you take off in the basket behind you.” As Skyler changed she could hear Boss muttering about the shape of her clothes and her polite manner of speaking. Well, it’s better than you broken English, Skyler thought to herself.
When she had finished she stood in front of the curtains waiting for the boss to notice her.
“Alright, you sit on that there chair and listen to the rules of the farm.” Boss began. Skyler sat as she was told and began to listen intently. She defiantly did not want to get any of that whipping Bowen told her about. “You may not socialize with the other slaves while yeh are workin’. Yeh may only eat at meal times. You must not enter the house of any one livin on or off this land, unless specifically instructed to do so. You will wake at 4:30 in the mornin’ to begin chores. Breakfast will be served only after all the animals is taken care of. Lunch is at 12 o’clock noon. Dinner is at 7. And all lights must be out by 10 P.M. The only free time you have, ‘though I s’pect you won’t have much free time, seein as the rest of them girls ain’t got none, would be between dinner and lights out, as long as all yer chores are done. And, uh, that’s about it. Well there are a few more, but they are seasonal so we’ll get to ‘em as they come.
“Now I’ll fetch ya Thelma and she will tell yeh what your jobs are.” Boss said as he left the house. He returned a few moments later with a girl who was very, well, mannish. She was large and muscular and had a real short hair cut which did not add to her feminity.
“Common now, let’s get goin, times a wastin.” Thelma said. Skyler followed her out into the field. Thelma and Skyler walked out around a bunch of barns and animal pens till they came to a vast open area. It was all flat farm land for miles. Thelma shoved a few garden tools at Skyler and said:
“Here, now you take these and muss up the dirt here and then after lunch you can plant seeds. See that flag way out there. That’s how far ya gotta go. Now its 9:30, you should get pretty far since you have over two hours ‘till lunch. Now get ta work!” Thelma screamed as she left Skyler alone in the field.
Skyler worked very hard. It was difficult to rake up the dirt, because it was so dry and hard. By the time Thelma came and got her for lunch, Skyler’s hands were bleeding and blistered.
Thelma took Skyler into one of the barns where she saw about 20 other women sitting around eating lunch. They were all dressed almost exactly like she was, with old work dresses and aprons, only they were much dirtier than her. Thelma took her over to a table that had a large pot on it with little bowls all around. She handed Skyler a bowl and sloped a spoon full of grey mush into it.
“Here,” Thelma said. “Now eat up, yeh only got a half hour before ya gotta work again.”
Skyler took her bowl and sat in a corner away from all the other women. Skyler hated it here. It was not that she felt better than these women, but she just did not like the depressing atmosphere. Skyler tasted her bowl of mush. It tasted disgusting; like a mix of sawdust and water. But since it was the only thing she had, Skyler forced herself to eat it. One woman scooted over to her and nudged Skyler with her elbow.
“Hey,” She whispered. “You new here?” Skyler nodded her head. “Ya got any cigarettes I can bum?” She asked
“Sorry, I don’t smoke.” Skyler whispered back. The women gave a disgusted look then slid back to her own bowl of mush.
After lunch, Thelma told Skyler how far she had to get on her raking before she could eat dinner.
“We do not tolerate any slackin here,” Thelma began. “I know its your first day, but we was told ya had done this before.”
Skyler had never done anything like this before. Cleaning up a palace, she could handle, but not this. This was hard labor, in the beating sun and humidity. This was terrible. Skyler worked as hard as she could through out the afternoon and early evening. She could only do half of the work she was supposed to be doing. Thelma came and fetched her for dinner, although she yelled at Skyler the whole way to the barn.
“This is really unacceptable.” Thelma said. “Yeh should really not be gettin no supper for this but seein as this is your first day and all, I shall make an exception. But this will be the last.”
After supper (another bowl of mush), Thelma showed Skyler where she would be sleeping. Thelma led Skyler to a shack behind one of the barns. Inside was a row of beds lined up against each of the long walls of the room. There was one bed in the corner with out any sheets on it.
“This one is yours.” Thelma said. “Now you better get some sleep ‘cuz you gotta get up nice and early to help with those chores.” Thelma left Skyler alone to fix her own bed. This was the easiest part of Skyler’s day, because she was used to making beds.
Skyler lay in bed that night thinking of what had happened to her in the past few weeks. She went from living in a palace, engaged to marry a prince to being chained to a chair in a dungeon, to being a farm slave, forced to live in a crowed room forced to live with 20 other women. She was amazed at how low her life had gotten so quickly. She could not think of a worse place to be than where she was. Even prison was better than this, she thought. At least I had a warm bed there, Skyler thought as she shivered from the cold. No one had asked her what her name was today. No one had even said hello to her or smiled at her when she passed. No one cared who she was or where she was from. They only wanted her to do her work and that was it.

The next morning, Skyler was woken up bright and early by all the other women getting up. Skyler was so tired she could not even move. The bed she had was not very comfortable at all. But, she dragged herself out of bed anyway. She got ready and headed over to the barn to get her breakfast mush. On her way to the barn, she found a crumpled up news paper lying on the ground. She picked it up. She guessed it was yesterday’s because of the headline. It said: “Note but no new hope found”. Skyler began to read the article:
Yesterday a note was found claiming it was written by Miss. Jones who has been missing since three Saturday s ago. The note was in a plain envelope and was delivered to the Prince by registered mail. The note said: “I have gone to a better place, where I will not be plagued by the proper was of royalty. P.S. You will never find her now!!”
This cryptic message sent a chill down the spines of the investigators. Of course the message insinuates murder . . .”
Skyler screamed and felt a sharp pain as the paper was ripped from her hands. She spun around to see the Boss with a leather whip raised above his head.
“What do you think you are doing eh?” He screamed. “No reading allowed.” He scolded as he cracked the whip down on Skyler’s shoulder. She screamed. “Now get ta work!” He said as he walked back to his house.
Skyler whimpered in pain as she went to find Thelma to get her chores for the day. Skyler had never been whipped before. She had no idea that being whipped would feel like that. Where the whip had touched her skin it burned terribly and was beginning to turn very red. Skyler wiped tears from her eyes as she walked into the barn where everyone was eating. When the other women saw her red marks they began snickering and laughing amongst them selves. Thelma told her that this morning she would be cleaning out the animal beds.
So Skyler went over to the barn where all the animals were and began to clean out their stalls. This was not the most pleasant of jobs; however it was not the worst because as she worked, Skyler talked to the horses and petted them. It was better than being all alone, she thought. After she was done Skyler was told to continue working on her field.
As she passed Boss’ house, though, she saw another young woman being whipped. But, the Boss was obviously not holding back on this woman, because Skyler could see blood showing through the poor girl’s tattered dress. Skyler kept on walking, although with every crack of the whip came the woman’s screams. As Skyler worked in the field, she wondered what that woman could have possibly done to receive such a harsh punishment. At lunch, Skyler found the answer to her wondering.
“Did ya hear what happened to Lucy?” One woman said.
“I heard she got a good whipping,” said another.
“Yeah,” the first woman chimed in. “She was caught by ol’ Thelma sleepin’ in the barn. ‘Stead of doin her work.”
Skyler made a pact with herself right then. She decided to do the best work she could, because she never wanted to be whipped again, especially not like Lucy.

Days went by, and Skyler kept on working. Although her hands hurt so much and her back ached, and she was so tired. She guessed that the grey mush they severed for every meal was not that great in nutritional value. Skyler’s skin was beginning to get very brown from working in the sun all day. The first few days she was there she had terrible sun burn though, because of her fair skin.
Then days turned into weeks, but Skyler had no idea how long she had been there. One time, a woman had come up to her and said:
“Do I know you? Cuz I swear yeh look so familiar?”
Skyler quickly shook her head and assured the woman they had never met. Skyler suspected it was possible people knew who she was, especially since she received so much media coverage. But, she figured it was best that know one knew the truth. After all, they probably would not believe her if she told them or they would just treat her worse. So it was all for the better that Skyler kept her identity a secret.
One day Skyler was eating her breakfast in the barn when the boss walked in and called Thelma over to him. They were close enough to Skyler that she could hear what they were saying.
“One of them maids up at the main house has gone sick.” Boss said.
“Well whatcha want me to do ‘bout it?” Thelma asked.
“I want ya to take one of these here slaves and replace her.”
“Well how ya ‘speck me do that? None of these women are trained for that. Not to mention, look at em their close ain’t fit for that.” Thelma said. It was true Skyler thought. None of them were fit to be in a house hold serving people. Even Skyler’s own dress was tattered and filthy. Even though she tried her best to keep it clean.
“The woman would get new clothes up at the house, now common Thelma just pick someone!” Boss yelled.
“Alright yous, listen up!” Thelma’s voice boomed. “Any of ya aint got any training bein a maid or nothin do yeh?” There was a rumble of laughter that went though the bard. And a few of the women yelled sarcastic remarks. Then Skyler decided that this was her only chance. She stood up and said.
“I used to be a maid.”
“You?” Thelma and the boss asked in unison.
“Yes me” Skyler answered. Thelma turned to the Boss and said something and they argued for a few minutes, but Thelma finally said.
“Well seein as you the only one with training, I suppose you’ll have to do. But I’m warning you: don’t screw up otherwise Boss will tan your hide like there’s no tomorrow”
Skyler nodded her head in agreement and followed Thelma out of the barn. Thelma took Skyler up and over this one hill and when they were at the top Skyler saw something that would make her gasp. Further down the road was a huge old farm house. It was beautiful. Thelma took Skyler up to one of the back doors and knocked on it. A woman in a maid’s uniform answered the door.
“Why, Thelma,” the woman said. “Is this what you brung us to replace Tina with?”
“Yes ma’am” Thelma replied.
“Alright then, she’s a pathetic little thing aint she?” the woman said.
“Yep, that she is.” Thelma said as she walked away leaving Skyler there with the woman.
“Well come in child,” the woman said. “You can call me Mama Jean.”
“OK,” Skyler said shyly.
“Well first thing we have to do is get you out of those clothes before anyone sees ya. Now follow me.” Mama Jean took Skyler up a back staircase and into a bathroom. “You can bathe in there and when ya are through put on these clothes and come and find me in the kitchen.”
It had been so long since Skyler had taken a bath that she tried to savor every moment of it. When she was through she put on the maids outfit that Mama Jean gave her, she discovered that it was a too big, but it was alright. So, she went down into the kitchen to find Mama Jean.
Mama Jean told her that she was going to be serving lunch to the house owner’s in the main dining room. She also told Skyler the rules of the house:
“Never speak unless you are spoken too. Always use ‘sir’ and ‘ma’am’ when speaking. Try and pretend that you are not even there, it’s easier that way.” Mama Jean told Skyler.
So, Skyler took a deep breath and headed out into the dining room with her serving tray.
“Look at this,” A large man with a big hat said to the woman sitting across from him, who Skyler assumed, was his wife. “That Prince of ours is going on a tour of the area. Wonder why he would do a thing like that?”
“I do not know, dear. Perhaps he is trying to get his mind of loosing that poor fiancé of his.” The woman said sweetly. Skyler immediately got more comfortable with serving lunch to these people. At least they liked her and felt sorry for her, even if they did not know who she was.
“Yeah, probably.” The man said. “Oh look, he’s going to be stopping here.” Skyler nearly dropped her trey. Instead it made a large clinking noise when she caught it. The man and woman looked up at her, as if for the first time noticing she was in the room, as Skyler quickly slid out the door to the kitchen.
“What happened?” Mama Jean asked.
“Slipped” Skyler said. Skyler finished serving lunch flawlessly, although she was not really paying much attention to the talk of the man and woman she was serving. All she could think about was the possibility of Josh coming there and rescuing her. Even though Josh probably was not aware he would be rescuing her.
“My, my,” Mama Jean said when Skyler was finished. “You are quite good at this. You have done this before I’m assuming.” Skyler nodded her head. “Where was that?” Mama Jean inquired. Skyler paused and thought of what answer to give. However she felt no need to lie so she answered:
“At the palace.”
“Really? You worked at the palace?” Mama Jean asked.
“Yeah.” Skyler said
“Well then why on earth would you come and work here?”
“It’s a long story” Skyler said and Mama Jean asked no more.
For the next few days, the house was busy readying for the Prince’s arrival. Skyler was told that she had to stay because they were short on help, but she was more than glad to stay because she desperately wanted to be there when the prince arrived.
One morning they were told that the prince would be arriving eleven o’clock. Skyler could hardly contain her excitement. All the savants were told to wait out on the lawn behind everyone else. This was so the house owners could show off how wealthy they were, Mama Jean informed Skyler. So like everyone else, Skyler filed out onto the lawn shortly before eleven. She saw that the boss had also come up to meet the prince. But, Skyler had a plan. Skyler saw the prince’s limousine coming up the road and she took a deep breath to calm herself. She knew if the prince did not see her she would be doomed for what she was about to do she would surely be whipped to death for.
Niles, Josh’s butler, got out of the front and opened his door. As he stepped out everyone began to bow. Everyone except Skyler, that was. After all, she was not breaking any rules, because as nearly the Prince’s equal she was informed, by Joshua, that she did not have to bow in his presence. Skyler moved over a bit so that she could be seen though all the people.
“What are you doin?” Skyler heard Mama Jean whisper beside her. “You’ll be killed!”
But Skyler stood strong. She thought for a moment the Prince saw her, but then people began to rise again and she was hidden from view. Then she heard Boss’ booming voice:
“Yeh have broken the rules for the last time rat!” He approached her with his whip raised as Skyler cowered down toward the grown. She was so upset that her plan did not work. Boss was about to strike her when she heard:
“Stop! I order you to stop!” Josh yelled. Skyler saw the crowd part as he came toward them. Boss backed away as Josh kneeled down.
“Skyler is that you?” Josh held back tears.
“Yes,” She whimpered.
“Well what are you doing? Come on get up.” He said. Skyler began to cry as she stood up and flung herself into Josh’s arms. She was free, finally free. Josh carried her back to the limo and put her inside. Then, he ordered Niles to take them back to the palace immediately.
Skyler curled up next to Josh on the way back and fell asleep. When she awoke she was home, in her room, in her own bed. She saw Josh sitting on a chair across from her.
“Hey,” She said sleepily as she sat up in bed.
“Hi,” He said standing up and walking over to her. “How are you feeling?” He asked as he sat on the end of her bed.
“Um, better, now that I’m home.” She smiled.
“So I was wondering, if you wouldn’t mind talking to the police because they have been bothering me for a while now, but no rush . . .“ He said.
“How long was I asleep?” Skyler asked.
“About a day and a half,” Josh laughed.
“Oh wow, I must have been tired. Ok I’ll talk to the police.” Skyler sighed.
“Are you sure?” Josh asked; he seemed concerned.
“Yeah, I’m sure.” Skyler said getting out of bed. “Just let me change into something better.”
“Ok,” Josh said after kissing her forehead. “Come to my office when you are ready.”
Skyler walked into her bathroom to get ready. She looked at herself in the mirror. She looked pale and gaunt. He cheeks were sunken in and her bones were showing. She knew she had lost weight since she was not being fed much, but she had no idea she looked this bad. She tried to find clothes that fit her but it was very difficult. Some of her clothes did not even stay on her anymore, they were so big. Skyler found something satisfactory to wear, even though it was still too big, and headed to Josh’s office.
As she walked through the halls, people stared at her. Skyler did not like it but there was nothing she could do about it so she just kept walking. When she arrived in Josh’s office she saw 3 other men, besides Josh, standing around talking.
“Skyler,” Josh began. “I’d like you to meet Detective Faranby.”
“Hello,” Skyler said as she shook his hand.
“Hello Miss Jones.” The detective said. “These are my two assistants who will be helping me with your case. Won’t you please have a seat?”
Skyler sat down on the couch with Josh beside her. The detective and his assistants sat across from them in chairs.
“Now, Miss Jones, please begin with the night of the ball and tell as much detail as you remember. Now I realize that you were gone nearly a month so that will be difficult, but do the best you can. You may begin when you are ready.”
Skyler started to tell her story and everyone in the room listen intently. They could hardly believe some of the things she said. When she told them about Mr. Sidd and Spencer Bowen, the Detective sent one of his assistants out right away to arrest them. Skyler continued on telling about what happened in the dungeon and how she had heard Josh talking to Niles outside her window. After he heard that Josh was mad he did not notice the board that was covering the window, buy Skyler assured him that it was not his fault; there was no way he could have known.
“Please continue, Miss Jones.” The detective said.
Skyler went on to talk about the farm and everything that happened up to the day Josh found her.
“I had no idea you had been through so much.” Josh said as he gave her a hug.
“It’s alright, I’m fine now.” Skyler said. A few minutes later, the detective’s men returned. They said that they could not find Mr. Sidd or Spencer Bowen.
“Well they have got to be somewhere,” the detective yelled. “Don’t rest until they are found!” Then the detective left, saying that if he found them he would call.
“In the mean time, we will put extra security around the palace to make sure you are safe.” Josh assured her.
“Thanks,” she said.
“Now,” he began. “I have called a press conference for five o’clock. I am not going to tell them everything, but just enough to get them to leave us alone.
“Oh one more thing,” he continued. He walked over to his desk and got something out of the top drawer. “I thought you would want this back.” He said as he held out her diamond ring.
“That would be perfect.” She said as she held out her hand and he put the ring on her finger.
At five o’clock she stood beside Josh as he spoke to the press. It was then that she realized that everyone who thought she lived a fairytale was wrong. She did not have a perfect life. What she had was a real life, full of its ups and downs just like everyone else’s life. She did know, however, that her life at that very moment was as perfect as it could possibly be.

Almost There
Chapter 1

Skyler walked through the garden looking at all the beautiful flowers. There were so many colors. It made everything so picture-esque. She bent down to smell a rose. It smelled so perfect. Just like her life.
Since her return seven months ago, Skyler was living what seemed like a dream. Josh and her ate dinner almost every day together. He paid so much attention to her it was almost annoying, almost. They made special plans for nearly every weekend. It was clear that Josh did not want to lose her again.
That was painfully obvious to Skyler every time she saw her new bodyguard, Ivan, lurking in the shadows. Josh had insisted that she have one, even though Skyler protested. He was a little bit too paranoid, Skyler thought; not that he did not have a right to be.
Skyler glanced behind her and saw Ivan trying to subtly follow her through the garden. His eyes were constantly darting left and right as if to look for possible abductors. Since, he was not watching where he was going, he nearly tripped over a potted plant and had to do a quick little side step to avoid falling. Skyler laughed. It amused her to see such a large man do a little dance.
It was not that she completely disliked him; after all he did have his amusing qualities. For example, before she entered a room, he would have to check to make sure it was secure. He also had funny code names for her that changed every so often to avoid someone figuring out who he was talking about. But, he was rather annoying. Skyler liked her privacy and she never really got any Ivan was always there, watching her. He was almost comparable to a stalker, only a bit less creepy.
Skyler took a seat on a bench that over looked a small koi pond. Josh was to meet her there at noon. It was 11:45 A.M. Skyler took the extra time she had to just relax. The last few weeks had been so busy and stressful.
Soon after her return from being kidnapped, Josh proclaimed he wanted to get married in a few months. But, Skyler had always had her heart set on a September wedding. Unfortunately, planning any wedding, let alone a royal wedding, in under a month would be impossible. So, they decided to wait.
Waiting turned out to be good for the both of them. Plus, they did not want to rush things too much. Then in mid-May Josh announced tat they would be married in September which gave Skyler a little over three months to plan the wedding, the Royal wedding. They had decided upon many of the particulars already. The wedding would be held at the church near the palace on September the first. The reception would be held in the palace ball room after the ceremony.
Skyler wished the guest list was smaller; however it was nearly impossible to keep it under 500 people. After all, they were going to be crowned the king and queen of all the land, as Skyler like to refer to it. Everyone wanted to come and Josh did not want to upset anyone. But, with Skyler’s influence they were able to cut the list down to about 480 people.
That afternoon, Skyler was going to be fitted for her wedding dress. Her dress was being custom made by one of the finest dress makers in the world. But, there was so much still left to plan and Skyler was not sure if she could get it all done by herself. Well, she was not entirely on her own. Josh assigned his assistant, Miss Holly, to help Skyler. Josh also helped when he could. That was why they were meeting in the garden; they had to pick flowers for the ceremony and reception.
Skyler heard footsteps behind her and turned to see who it was. She then saw Josh making his way up the path, wading through all the plants that had been placed there for their inspection.
“Is it just me?” he began. “Or are there more plants here than usual?” Josh said as he made his way toward Skyler.
“No there are more. So many florists send us samples of different plants and flowers to use for the wedding.” Skyler said with a laugh. Josh finally reached her and gave her a hug.
“So now in stead of a garden we have a forest.” Josh joked.
“Yeah pretty much,” Skyler laughed again. She loved Josh’s witty humor.
“So what exactly is the purpose of this little meeting? Please tell me it has something to do with removing the extra bushes that seem to have sprouted on the walkway.”
“Actually it does. We must pick flowers for the wedding and reception, like I mentioned before.”
“Ohhhh!” Josh groaned. “I don’t wanna. They all look the same to me.”
“Come on it will be fun. If you are good, I’ll give you a cookie.” Skyler said playfully.
“Ok,” Josh said with a smile. Skyler and Josh began to walk through the rows of flowers in the garden.
“Oh, this one looks OK.” Josh said as he stopped in front of one plant. Skyler bent down and picked up the card that was on it.
“That is a dogwood flower,” Skyler said.
“I though a dogwood was a type of tree.” Josh said.
“Actually, it’s a tree and a flower.”
“Hmm . . . did not know that.” Josh said. After a few more minuets of walking through plants, Josh proclaimed:
“I’m so bored!”
“Come on, this is fun.” Skyler said supportively.
“Define fun.” Josh said dully.
“I dunno, hanging out with you is kind fun.” Skyler grinned.
“Well yeah, but . . . “ Josh got a funny look on his face.
“What?” Skyler was puzzled.
“Nothin’,” Josh said innocently. “It’s just . . . this.” He said as he playfully began to tickle her. Skyler was laughing hysterically, but when she saw Ivan rolling his eyes in dismay, she tried to compose herself.
“Ok seriously now, back to the flowers.” It took them a while longer, but they finally decided on flowers for the wedding. The reception was going to be covered with what Skyler called ‘happy flowers’ or sunflowers and daisies. Then the wedding itself would be a mix of roses, tulips, a few others intermixed with sprigs of baby’s breath.

After they finished, Skyler had to rush off to meet Miss Holly so they could go to the wedding dress fitting.
“Aw, why can’t I go?” Josh had asked.
“Well for two reasons,” Skyler replied. “First, after about three minuets of looking at fabrics and dress styles and taking measurement, you would be bored out of your mind. Just like with the flowers. Second, the groom cannot see the bride in the wedding dress before the wedding; its bad luck.”
Reluctantly Josh agreed and Skyler and Miss Holly left without him. On the ride to the fitting, Skyler had butterflies in her stomach. She did not really even know why she did. When Skyler and Miss Holly went into the dress maker’s shop every one stopped what they were doing and rushed over to help them. They took their coats and offered them something to drink.
The woman who was going to make Skyler’s dress was Madame Chelsea. She was one of the best dressmakers in the world.
“Ah, welcome Miss Skyler!” Madame Chelsea said as she appeared from her office. “We are going to have so much fun making your dress!” The woman yelled as she hugged Skyler and yanked her toward a more private room. “Come on now, let’s get started!”
Madame Chelsea began by having one of her assistants measure Skyler all over. Skyler had no idea that so many measurements were necessary. After the measuring was done, Madame Chelsea went to her office and returned with a giant book.
“I have here a book of all the dresses that I have ever made. You may look through it and see which type of dress you would like.” She said as she handed the book to Skyler.
Skyler took the book and sat on one of the sofas in the room next to Miss Holly and they began to look through it. There were dozens of perfectly lovely gowns, and a few ugly ones, but Skyler had trouble finding one she liked.
It took her a while, but Skyler finally decided on combining aspects of two dresses she found. After that, they decided on fabric and Skyler took a sample of the fabric with her so she could properly find shoes and other things to match.
By the time Skyler and Miss Holly left the dress shop it was nearly five o’clock and Skyler was exhausted.

Later that evening at dinner, Josh was asking about Skyler’s dress.
“So what is it like?” he inquired eagerly.
“Well I do not know really. It is not made yet.”
“Do you think it will look nice?”
“Yeah, oh that reminds me, Madame Chelsea said she wanted a down payment.”
“Alright, I will send a check tomorrow.” Josh said. “So what do you think about taking a little trip this weekend?”
“Maybe, where to?” Skyler inquired.
“Skiing.”
“Skiing, but its almost summer,” Skyler laughed.
“That is why we should go, to get away from the heat. There is lots of snow up in the mountains even though it’s sweltering down here.”
“Well, I do not really ski, but sure, OK, sounds fun.”
“Great,” Josh said with enthusiasm. “We will leave on Friday.”

On Friday, Skyler, Josh, Sir Louis Bernard (the royal advisor), Miss Holly and the rest of their entourage flew up to their cabin in the mountains. It really was not a cabin though; it was more like a small hotel. There were wings for the servants and one Royal wing for Skyler and Josh. Many other rooms also were available for Josh’s guests and assistants. By the time they arrived in the mountains, it was almost dusk. So after dinner they unpacked their things and some of them played Pictionary by the fire-side.
The next morning, everyone had drug themselves out of bed by eight a.m. and they wanted to go right out on the slopes. Skyler, however, did not like skiing, so she chose to stay inside.
“Come on, it will be fun!” Josh pleaded with her.
“No, that’s ok. I do not like skiing.” Skyler said.
“Why not?”
“Well first, it is wet and cold. I would much rather be laying on a beach somewhere. Second, I went skiing once and nearly broke my leg. So, no thanks, I’d like to keep all my bones intact.”
“Alright, suit yourself.” Josh said as he walked out the door. Skyler spent the rest of the morning curled up by the fireside reading a good book.
Around lunch, the snowy gang piled into the cabin covered in white wetness. As they peeled off their wet gear, the maids were busy mopping up the puddles on the floor. Then they all went to their respective rooms to put on some warmer, dryer clothes.
Skyler picked up some of the soaked items and hung them by the fire to dry. After they ate, the group headed out to the slopes again, this time they were accompanied by Skyler. Josh had convinced her that it couldn’t hurt to just walk around in the snow. So she layered on the clothes and followed him outside.
They walked along the path in the woods and talked.
“You know, I must admit that even though I’m freezing, the snow and the ice on the trees is quite a pretty sight.” Skyler said as she admired her surroundings.
“Yeah, it really is,” Josh agreed. They began to talk more about their wedding plans as they walked. Then Josh’s cell phone rang.
“Hello . . . Yes . . . alright . . . OK, we’ll be there soon!” He said as he hung up the phone.
“What is it?” Skyler asked.
“Oh we have to turn back. We have to have an emergency meeting.”
“Why?”
“Well it’s this rebel group. They call themselves the Chosen. They have been around for ages. They usually do not cause too much trouble, just a protest here and there.”
“Well, what don’t they like? What are they protesting against?”
“The monarchy. They think it should be a dictatorship.”
“Oh that’s much better,” Skyler said sarcastically.
“Yeah, but now they have made several threats against prominent people. It has been getting worse in the past several months. They are gaining more and more supporters.”
“Do you think it will cause a war?” Skyler asked cautiously.
“I don’t know.”
They were coming closer to their cabin now. As they come into the clearing, snow balls were being thrown at them.
“What the . . . “
Suddenly, a few of Josh’s associates came out from behind trees and continued to throw snow at them. So, Skyler and Josh grabbed handfuls of snow to throw at them. Soon it was a full fledge snow ball war. By the end, everyone was laughing so hard they could barely stand. Everyone was also soaked. So, they went to their rooms and changed their clothes and spent the rest of the day shivering by the fire.

The following day was pretty much the same as the previous. Skyler was inside reading and everyone else was out at the slopes. Around one o’clock in the afternoon. Josh came in the house followed by two men who were carrying Miss Holly.
“What happened?” Skyler asked as she helped them put Miss Holly on the couch.
“She sprained her ankle”
“Oh dear,” Skyler said. They propped Miss Holley’s ankle up on pillows and put ice on it. After that Skyler and Miss Holly stayed inside watching TV until everyone else returned from skiing.

In the middle of the night, Skyler awoke with a start. She though she had a bad dream and tried to go back to sleep. But, she smelled something strange. That smells like smoke, she thought.
She sat up in bed and squinted her eyes in the darkness. Skyler could not see very much but she distinctly smelled smoke. So, she got out of bed and put a robe on over her pajamas and she put slippers on her feet. She walked out into the hall and saw a thin layer of black smoke drifting up the passageway.
Skyler heart immediately began to race. Oh no, she thought, aren’t there smoke detectors? She looked up at the ceiling and saw one but it obviously was not making any noise so she screamed immediately:
“FIRE, FIRE!” And she ran down the hall to Josh’s room. She flung open the door and ran over to his bed and shook him while saying,
“Get up! There is a fire!”
“What?” Josh said sleepily as he woke up.
“There is a fire, GET UP!”
“What?! Oh my God!” He said as he sprang out of bed. “Go get everyone out!”
Skyler went downstairs yelling for everyone to get up. People were slowly realizing what was going on and they were rushing to get clothes on as they went outside to escape. Skyler could see flames leaping out from the main room where the fireplace was. That’s what caused the fire I guess, Skyler thought.
The smoke was beginning to reach her throat and choke her, so Skyler made her way outside with every one else. She found Josh and asked,
“Is every one out?”
“I think so,” he replied. “But when I counted the people outside, I think I was missing one. Maybe I just counted wrong . . . “
Then they heard what sounded like a woman’s scream coming from the building.
“No, you did not count wrong,” Skyler said as she turned toward the building. “Miss Holly is still inside” Skyler began to walk toward the burning building.
“What are you going?” Josh screamed. “The building is on fire!”
“But, Miss Holly has a sprained ankle. She cannot walk by herself.” Skyler said as she disappeared back into the building.
Inside the building, the smoke was beginning to take over. Skyler could feel the heat from the flames as she crawled through the hallway trying to see Miss Holly.
“Where are you?” She cried out. Skyler could barely see through the smoke.
“Over here!” Miss Holly choked. Skyler traveled toward the sound of her voice. She was beginning to choke on the smoke as well. Finally, she found Miss Holly huddled in a corner. Skyler went over to her and helped her to stand up and she made their way outside. Skyler was probably only in the fiery building about three minuets, but it felt like an eternity. When Skyler reached the outside, she welcomed the fresh air. A few people rushed over to help Miss Holly and Josh ran over to Skyler.
“What were you thinking? You could have been killed!” Josh scolded.
“Yeah, but I’m fine and so is Miss Holly.” Skyler said.
“That is true, you were very brave but please don’t do that ever again.”
“OK,” Skyler said as she shivered from the cold.
It was still quite a while until the fire department came. They were far away and the whole way down the mountain. Unfortunately by the time they arrived, the cabin was not salvageable. The firemen worked on putting out the fire so the wind would not carry it to the trees. Josh went over to talk to the fire chief.
When he returned he said that it would be a while before they knew the exact cause of the fire.
“He did say something was strange through.” Josh added.
“What’s that?”
“Well, he wondered why the fire department was not automatically notified when the smoke alarms went off.”
“The smoke alarms never did go off.” Skyler said.
“I know, that’s the strange part.” Josh said.
By the time the whole group acquired transportation to the local airport, it was nearly dawn. They were all quite exhausted since they had been up half the night. Everyone slept on the flight home.

A few days later Skyler and Josh were finishing their lunches when Niles, Josh’s Butler, rushed in.
“Pardon me sir, but the fire and police chiefs are here to speak with you.”
“Oh excellent, they must have the report on the cabin fire. Send them in.” Josh said. The chiefs came in and towed to Josh and shook hands with Skyler.
“Come gentlemen we shall go to my office to talk.” They all proceeded to Josh’s office and sat down.
“Your Highness,” they fire chief began. “When we collected all the information about the fire in your cabin, it was very clear that something was not right. It appears that all the connecting wires in the smoke detectors were severed.”
“What?” Josh and Skyler said in unison.
“And furthermore,” the police chief said, “it appears that the fire was not an accident, but intentionally set.”
“You’re serious?” Josh asked.
“I’m afraid so your highness,” the police chief continued. “It appears someone made an attempt on your life. If it had not been for Miss Jones waking you up . . .” he paused. “Well who knows what would have happened.”
All three men looked at Skyler. She blushed and said nervously:
“I guess it’s a good thing I’m a light sleeper.”
As the conversation progressed it became more evident that Skyler was indeed a hero. The police were still unsure how the smoke detectors were able to be unattached with out the police knowing, after all, the entire house was wired with a security system constantly in contact with the police.
“Do you know of anyone that could have done this, your highness?” The fire chief asked.
“No, I do not.”
“Well all I can say is you better buy your fiancé something special, because she saved your life. We must be going now.” The police chief concluded as the fire chief and he left Josh’s office. There were a few moments of silence before Skyler said,
“Well that was strange.”
“He does have a point, you know.”
“What is that?” Skyler asked.
“I should get you something special.” Josh answered.
“Oh it was really nothing . . . anyway so you really do not have any idea who did it?”
“No, I have a suspicion.”
“Oh?”
“Remember that rebel group I was telling you about? I think it very well could be them. But I’m just guessing so that is why I did not say anything . . .“ Josh’s voice trialed off. She could tell he was concentrating very hard on whatever he was writing on his desk. So she decided to go. As she was walking out she heard Josh say,
“If you see Miss Holly around tell her I want to speak with her.”
“Alright,” Skyler said as she left.

For the next few days Skyler had a feeling that something was going on that she did not know about. Every time she entered the room people stopped talking and slowly left the room. Finally, she got sick of the paranoia and she decided to ask Josh what was going on. She went into his office and said,
“So, am I just paranoid or is something going on that I don’t know about?”
“No, you’re not paranoid.” Josh said.
“Oh, that is good. So, what’s up?”
“Nothing.”
“Ok, see that’s not funny.” Skyler said impatiently.
“Alright, just kidding, I was going to wait until it was official to tell you, but I might as well tell you now. You are going to be knighted.”
“Huh?” Skyler was confused on so many levels.
“Well dammed actually.”
“Um ok? I’m confused”
“Well you know how the police chief said I should get you something nice. Well I am.”
“Well um ok, but it’s kind of just really surprising. Wait, you just cannot randomly decide to make someone a knight or dame can you?”
“Not exactly, but after extensive research I have decided to dame you because you saved my life in the fire and therefore deserved it.”
“OK,” Skyler laughed. “Wow this is so exciting. So when is the ceremony thing?”
“Tomorrow”
“TOMORROW!” Skyler screamed. “And you were not going to tell me?!”
“No, I was.”
“Oh! Now I have to go and get a dress and shoes and . . .”
Josh interrupted her, “Relax, Miss Holly took care of everything for you.”
“Oh,” Skyler was relieved.
“You can just go and find her and she will explain everything to you.”
Once Skyler found Miss Holly she found that what Josh said was indeed true, every thing was in order. Skyler was still a bit apprehensive though since this was the first big, important gathering since the ball where she was kidnapped. However, Josh assured her that plenty of safety precautions were in order and that everything was perfectly fine.
The ceremony was to begin at twelve noon sharp with a congratulatory luncheon to follow.
“You know one good thing about this,” Miss Holly said the next morning as Skyler was getting ready.
“What’s that?” Skyler inquired.
“Well, now you will have a title.”
“Uh, yeah, that’s kind of the whole point of the ceremony.”
“Yeah, but now it will be easier.” Miss Holly said.
“What will be easier?” Skyler asked.
“Marrying the prince.”
“What do you mean?”
“Oh nothing.”
“No seriously. Would there be a problem with me marring Josh if I did not have a title?”
“Just never mind, for get about it.”
Skyler dropped the subject, but she was still very confused. She did not know that there was a problem with her marring the prince if she did not have a title. Did Josh know that? She thought. Is that why he is doing this, so he does not have a problem marrying me? No, she told her self, I’m just being paranoid. I’ll ask him about it later though.

The ceremony was perfect. It was just how Skyler imagined. First a few people gave speeches about Skyler. Then Josh spoke about how she saved everyone for the fire. Then he asked her to step foreword and named her “Dame Skyler Jones”. Then the press took lots of pictures.
At the luncheon, Skyler noticed more people talking to her now that she was dammed. The same people who had not said a word to her at the ball not even a year earlier, were now talking to her like they had been friends for years. Skyler could not get over how much a stupid name meant to them.
As most of the guests were leaving Skyler went over to Josh and said.
“I must speak with you about something.”
“Alright, but I’m so busy today. Would tomorrow morning be alright?”
“Sure,” Skyler agreed as she headed to her room to change into regular clothes.

That evening while Skyler was in her room, she heard a knock at her door. When she opened it, she saw Miss Holly standing there.
“May I come in?” She asked.
“Sure,” Skyler said.
“I just wanted to know when you wanted to begin your training.”
“Excuse me?”
“Well it is nearly the end of June now; you know, only two months to go. We better start soon, there is much to cover.”
“Wait, I’m confused. What training are you talking about?”
“Oh, the training to be a queen.”
“I need training to be a queen?”
“Well you know, training on what to do, what to say, now to act, that sort of thing.”
“Ah, I see what you mean.” Skyler was beginning to get annoyed. “You mean proper training, because I’m such a slob and all. Not to mention just a servant!”
“No, no, of course not. We just don’t want you to be embarrassed that’s all.”
“Who are we? Josh, did he say that?”
“No, Sir Bernard did.”
“Uh huh, well in that case you must mean you do not want me to embarrass every one else.”
“Well . . . no . . . “
“Yeah whatever,” Skyler interrupted. “Starting tomorrow will be fine.” Skyler said and then Miss Holly left.

The next morning Skyler went straight to Josh’s office, she had a lot to talk to him about.
“So what is it you wanted to talk about?”
“I was wondering . . . well . . . see it’s just . . . the thing is . . .”
“Stop.” Josh interrupted. “What is the matter with you? You seem upset.”
“It’s just that Miss Holly said that one of the reasons you had me dammed was so there would not be a problem with you marring me. Is that true? Is there a problem with us getting married?”
“Well first that is not entirely false, but it’s not entirely true.” Josh said reluctantly.
“I knew it.” Skyler sighed as she sat on the couch. “I knew something like this was going to happen. What is the problem? Is there something in the laws that says a prince an only marry royalty? There is isn’t there. So then you had to get me a title somehow so you staged the fire and knew that I would save everyone.” Skyler got up and paced as she rambled.
“Then you got everyone in on it - the police chief and the fire chief. I bet there is no rebel group. It was all just a scam!” Then Skyler smacked Josh on the arm and said, “How could you do that?!”
“Hey! I did not do anything, now calm down!” He said.
“Oh, then why didn’t you stop me?”
“Because it was entertaining until you smacked me.”
“Sorry,” Skyler sighed as she sat back down. “I got caught up in the moment. So, what is the truth?”
“Well first, I want you to know that there was never any official problem with us getting married.” Josh began. He took a seat next to Skyler on the couch and continued. “It is just simply expected that royalty marry royalty, so to speak. It is sort of an unspoken expectation that a prince marry a princess or at least some other type of high ranking person. Some people think that . . . “ Josh paused. Skyler looked at him and he continued. “Some people want a pure blood line on the monarchy; pure being completely void of commoners. They want upper class to marry upper class and so on . . . “
“Oh, I see.” Skyler said as she looked at the floor. What he said came as a shock even though Skyler already knew it to be true. She knew there were some people who thought that they should not be married simply because Skyler was a “commoner”.
“Luckily for us, I’m not one of those people. I never have been. I always thought discrimination based on social class was very old fashioned. None the less, certain people have expressed their opinions on the matter; Sir Louis Bernard in particular.
“So, in an effort to get them off my back, so to speak, I decided to dame you. I really wouldn’t have given it a second thought, after all their opinions do not matter at all, but the fire changed my mind. Actually what the police chief said changed my mind. I figured that the people who were harassing me would soon be bothering you so I researched and discovered that you saving everyone in the fire, along with your other amazing qualities of course made you perfectly quality to be dammed.
“I’m sorry if that upsets you, but I was just trying to avoid them bothering you.” Josh concluded.
“Well, when you put it that way, I suppose I can’t be mad then.” Skyler smiled.
“That is good.” Josh got up and walked to his desk.
“Wait, just one more thing.”
“Yes, dear?”
“What about this whole royalty training?”
“Excuse me?” Josh seemed as puzzled as Skyler was when she first found out about it.
“You mean, you do not know about it?”
“Uh, no.”
“Well perhaps you should talk to Sir Bernard then. After all, it was his idea.”
“He is not here today, but I will defiantly speak with him as soon as he returns.”
“Ok, well I best be off. My first training session begins today. Maybe we will talk about the proper way to curtsey!” Skyler said with sarcastic enthusiasm as she left Josh’s office.

After dinner, Skyler went up to her room and collapsed on her bed.
“Well, that was positively horrible.” She said to herself as she reflected on her ‘training session’.
Miss Holly had made her practice the correct pronunciations of foreign dignitaries’ names. Then she gave Skyler books on basic phrases in Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, and Japanese. Luckily Skyler already knew some Spanish and French. She was instructed by Miss Holly to study the books because she would be quizzed on them. She felt like she was in high school again.
She opened the German book and began to read some of it, but after half an hour she was beginning to forget and confuse the few words she learned so she gave up and went to bed.

The next morning, Skyler was wandering around the gardens skulking about having to learn six new languages, when Niles found her.
“Pardon me, Miss Jones, but his highness wishes to speak with you immediately.”
“Alright,” Skyler said. She then followed Niles up to the house.
“I just spoke with Sir Bernard.” Josh said as Skyler entered his office.
“And?”
“Well he thinks it is a good idea for you to learn a few things that are unfamiliar to you. You know just ridiculous incidental things such as which fork is the shrimp fork and what the official dance of Austria is. It will help you out, trust me it will be beneficial.”
“Wait, so you agree with him about theses, theses lessons?” Skyler yelled angrily.
“Well, he is my royal advisor and . . . “
“I cannot believe this.” Skyler said.
“It can’t hurt to be a little more informed and proper.”
“Well I’m sorry I’m such an unkempt slob! But, why are you even listening to him in the first place?”
“Look, I’m sorry, but I have to go. I have a meeting an hour away with the local government officials. We can continue this discussion later.” Josh said as eh kissed her cheek and started to leave.
“Fine! Run out! This is not over! And I’ll have you know I do not even like shrimp!” Skyler screamed out the door.
Skyler then stomped her way out into the garden. She was going to avoid her royalty lessons for the day.

Later that day, Skyler asked Niles when Josh would return. She felt bad that he left with her yelling at him and she wanted to apologize for flipping out.
“I am sorry, Miss Jones,” Niles began. “I do not know when he will return. He said it might not be back until late tonight.”
“Oh, ok, well could you tell him I will speak with him first thing tomorrow.”
“Yes, of course.”

By the time Skyler went to bed, Josh still was not home. Skyler was a bit worried, but not a lot, because she knew he was always very busy and probably was on his way.
In the middle of the night, lights turning on and someone shaking her awaked Skyler.
“Miss Jones, get up!”
“What . . . What’s going on?” Skyler said groggily as she sat up in bed.
“Something has happened”

Chapter 2

Skyler ran up to her room, slammed the door shut and locked it. Then she lay down on her bad and began to think about what happened in the past 7 hours.

At 5AM Sir Bernard, Miss Holly, some palace guards and a few others in her room, awaked her.
“Josh is being held hostage,” they told her.
“What?” she stammered.
“His highness and the few other officials he was meeting with are being held hostage by a group of rebels.”
“Well where are they? How did they get Josh? …”
Sir Bernard stopped her. “We know nothing at this time.”
“What do you mean you know nothing? You come barging into my room, wake me up, tell me that my fiancé is being held hostage but that is all you know. What is the purpose of that?” Skyler screamed angrily.
“Well it is a long story . . . we will explain in a second. Just get up, get dressed and meet us downstairs.”
Skyler did as she was told. When she was ready she went downstairs and Sir Bernard and some of Josh’s other officials sat her down in Josh’s office and began to explain everything they knew to her. Skyler noticed that Sir Bernard was in a much bitterer mood that usual.
“It seems,” Sir Bernard began. “That you are now in charge.”
“What?” Skyler was dumbfounded.
“Apparently there is some law that if the prince becomes unable to perform his duties, in this particular case you would take over.” Mr. Hill, one of Josh’s assistants, said.
“How is that possible?” Skyler asked.
“That’s what I said,” Sir Bernard mumbled under his breath.
“Well, I won’t bore you with all the legal stuff, but according to the laws of our country, if a prince is engaged to a person such as your self, Dame Jones, you would take over temporarily, or permanently depending on the situation.”
“That’s weird, but ok. Now if I’m in charge you must tell me everything you know about what is happening with Josh.”
“You see, we don’t even know that much.” Mr. Hill began.
“We received a phone call from the rebel group saying that they had taken his highness along with the other men. No other information or demands were made. So we tried to contact the people who were with them, but their cell phones were disconnected.
“So all we know is they are being held hostage.”
“Well, what can we do? There must be something. We cannot just sit around and do nothing.” Skyler said.
“What would you suggest we do?”
“I don’t know,” she said. “I’m new at this.”
“Well, I’m afraid there is nothing we can do. We have no information so we cannot plan what to do next.”
“As long as we have nothing to do, I’m going to run an errand.” Sir Bernard said. “With your permission of course”
“Fine, whatever,” Skyler said. After he left Skyler continued.
“What’s wrong with him? He seems even more bitter than usual.”
“Well,” began Miss Holly, “He thinks he should have been the one chosen to take charge.”
“Oh I see” Skyler said, not that she was surprised.
Just then, the royal police burst into Josh’s office. They told Skyler that they had to set up a command center where they could record and trace all the incoming calls, among other things. So, they were going to use Josh’s office and the adjacent conference room. To do this properly they kicked everyone out and told them all not to return for at least one hour.

Skyler left Josh’s office and walked onto one of the balconies. The sun was beginning to peak over the horizon. The air was already sticky and it was barely 6 o’clock. It was going to be a hot, humid July day. Skyler decided to walk around her garden to clear her head.
In the past hour, Skyler’s life had changed so dramatically she hardly knew what to do next. Suddenly she had to focus on all these new tasks and responsibilities while she tried to not think about the fact that the love of her life was being held captive. Skyler’s mind began to race through all the possibilities as she walked through the garden. What had happened to Josh? Was he all right? What are the kidnappers doing to him? What do they want? Would they kill Josh? What would happen then? Would she be left all alone to rule the country? How would she survive? No, she told herself. I will not think about that. She tried to calm herself down, but her nerves got the best of her. She began to shake and soon she started to cry. She sat down by the edge of the pool. He heard the waves lap up against the side. There was a small breeze that caused ripples in the water. The sight and sound were mesmerizing to Skyler. She watched the water and felt all her worries lift away. Skyler was not sure how long she sat there and stared into the crystal blue water.

Miss Holly shaking her shoulder and saying her name pulled Skyler from her trance.
“You must come back inside now.” Miss holy said.

When Miss Holly and Skyler returned to the conference room where everyone was, they found it bustling with activity. As soon as the others in the room noticed Skyler’s return, a bunch of them came up to her and they were all talking at once.
“Woah, slow down! One at a time please.” She said.
“Miss Jones,” one of them said, “We need your approval to take action against the rebels.”
“Action? What do you mean by that?” She asked.
“Miss Jones we need you to address the nation, they need to be informed or else there will be chaos.”
“What do you mean, like a press conference?” Skyler inquired.
“Miss Jones, the ambassador to Spain is due in at one p.m., should I cancel his visit?”
“Um, I don’t know!” Skyler screamed in frustration.
“Ladies, gentlemen, please,” Skyler heard Sir Bernard’s voice say behind her. “Give the woman some room.” He said as he pushed his way through the crowd of people and put his had on Skyler’s should. She shuddered at his cold touch.
“Now it is obvious you are having difficulty with all of this, which is completely understandable since it is all so new to you. Let me handle everything, my dear. After all you must be under such emotional strain.”
Skyler could have reached up and slapped him for his false empathy, but she did not. Not wanted Sir Bernard to get the best of her, Skyler took a deep breath.
“No, I’ll be fine. I can handle everything.” Skyler said calmly even though she knew that was an outright lie.
“First,” she began. “I don’t think we should take any action against anyone. At least not until we know more. Second, I think a press conference is a good idea. How does noon sound?”
“Fine.”
“Good, hopefully by then we will know more. Thirdly, why is this Spanish ambassador coming?”
“I’m no sure really. His highness set up the meeting.”
“Well, he probably is already on his way, but you must inform him of the situation as soon as his plane lands. Whether or not he leaves will be up to him. Anything else?”
No one said a word. Out of the corner of her eye Skyler saw Sir Bernard slip out of the room. This time she was going to follow him to see where he was headed. She was almost out the door when she heard him speak.
“Good Morning, Mr. Mathews.” He said.
“Hello Sir Bernard, where are you going?”
“I’m off to do some research. That girl cannot be in charge. She is not qualified. She will ruin everything. It should have been me that took over. What happens if something, God forbid of course, to His Highness? Then she becomes Princess Skyler? What a monarchy that will be! The country will be in shambles.”
Well there’s a surprise, Skyler thought. He wants to be in charge. Skyler went into Josh’s office and sat behind the desk. The top of the desk was fairly clean; only a few papers lie on it. Skyler tired to open one of the drawers to look for a pen, but they were all locked.
Just then, Miss Holly entered with another man. She was followed by one of the detectives and a few other assistants.
“Miss Jones, this is Mr. Matthews.” Miss holly said referring to the man she came in with. The one who was talking to Sir Bernard, Skyler thought while shaking his had.
“He was with His Highness when he was kidnapped.”
“Oh, excellent, you can tell us what happened. Do you know where they went? Do you know what happened to them?” Skyler asked excitedly.
“Well, um . . .” Mr. Matthews stuttered.
“Why don’t you have a seat?” Skyler said. “And you can start from the beginning.”
“Well His Highness was speaking with one of the local governors and we were all standing around listening to them.”
“Who is ‘we’?” Skyler inquired.
“Oh, the prince’s advisors and the governor’s advisors. There was about seven of us over all.”
“Ok, continue…” Skyler said impatiently.
“Well all of a sudden the door burst open and all these men entered. They wore black clothes with black masks over their faces. They all had guns as well. They demanded that we all get on our knees with our hands on top of our heads. Of course his highness demanded a meaning to it all, but they threatened to kill him, so he had to obey.”
“Oh my,” someone gasped.
“Well I was right near a closet so I slipped inside it without the men noticing and listening to what was happening in the room. The men then went around the room forcing everyone to say their name and position. The one man, who appeared to be their leader, sent a few other men to see if there were any more people in the building. A few minutes later, they returned with two more people at gunpoint and said the rest of the building was empty.
“Then, the leader man said how he did not like the room they were in because it had too many windows. He instructed his men to take the prisoners down into the basement. Right before they left though, His Highness asked bravely, ‘Why are you doing this?’ and the man replied, ‘Because my people wish to rid you and your kind from this country.’”
“Well, that is a very ominous statement.” Miss Holly said.
“Then I took my opportunity to leave.” Mr. Matthews concluded.
“Thank you very much.” Skyler said. “You have been very helpful.”
Just as Skyler was going to show Mr. Matthews out, the door to Josh’s office burst open. One of her assistants was there and he said,
“Miss Jones you should really come and have a look at the television.”
Skyler followed her to the next room where everyone else was already gathered around the TV. They all watched in silence as a reporter broke in with an emergency bulletin.
“This is a special report,” the newsman began. “We have reports of a group begin held hostage inside a local government building. Mindy Williams is life at the scene. Mindy what can you tell us about the situation?”
“Well Chuck, it seems to be utter chaos here. This hostage situation became information to the media not long ago, however it seems that these people were taken hostage last night.”
“Mindy, do you know how many hostages are in the building?” The newsman asked.
“This is unconfirmed information but we believe there are about seven hostages and 15 men holding them hostage. But here is the most disturbing news, again this is unconfirmed, but we have received a report that his highness, Prince Joshua Whitfield is one of the hostages.”
“Well, that is truly a horrible and disturbing thing Mindy.”
Just then a loud noise was heard coming from the television and Mindy started screaming.
“Shots have been fired; shots have been fired from inside the building!” Mindy screamed.

Then someone turned off the television. Skyler was not sure what to do; she was in utter shock.
“Well what should we do now?” Someone asked.
“We will have a press conference in one hour, just like we planned.” Skyler said.
“But, we don’t know anything.”
“Maybe not, but now the whole world thinks that Josh is a hostage and if we don’t make a statement it will be chaos because on one will know if this country has a leader or not.”

Skyler got off of her bed and looked in the mirror. She looked horrible. Her hair was a mess and she had no make up on. She tried to fix herself up but it was no use. She could not focus. All she thought about was Josh. Where was he and was he all right?

As the strange men herded him down a dark stairwell, all Joshua could think about was Skyler. What if, God forbid, something happened to him? Then the last words that they spoke to each other were not pleasant. That would just be horrible. Joshua was worried about Skyler. He knew that she would be in charge now and he knew that she was already stressed and would be even more stressed now that he was missing. Although he was worried about her, he was worried about himself as well. He was afraid of the men who had taken him and the others hostage. They were obviously not very pleasant and he got the impression from them that they would not really care too much if they had to kill someone.
As he and the other hostages were standing around a basement waiting for the rebel men to become more organized Josh tried to sneak a look at his watch. When he did he found it read 12 midnight. He wondered how long it would take for news of his capture to reach Skyler.
Soon the rebel men found chairs and strapped their hostages to them and then strapped the chairs to poles scattered around the basement area. Josh looked around and found that the hostages included himself, Mr. Brown, the local government leader, two of his own staff members and two of Mr. Brown’s staff members. Josh knew he had three staff members when he came but he did not know what happened to the other. He was afraid to think about it.
“Is that all of them?” One of the rebels asked from behind his black mask.
“Yes.” Another answered.
“Very good,” said the first. “Now we wait.”
A third man came up to them and asked, “But sir, why don’t we make a demand now?”
“Because, you idiot, the longer we make them wait, the more they will give us.” The first man said cruelly.
“Yes, sir.”
“Now we will watch them in shifts.” The first man said. That man must be the one in charge, Josh thought.
“You,” he said as he pointed to the taller masked man. “You will watch them first. Everyone else, let’s go upstairs.” He said as he started up the stairs. Three other men then followed him.

Joshua tried to get some sleep but it was very difficult. The next morning, one of the masked men came downstairs and he was carrying a tray with a pitcher of water on it along with some glasses. He poured the water and gave each of the hostages a drink.
“Don’t we get any food?” Mr. Brown asked.
“Maybe, if you are good.” The masked man said. The man walked around to the other end of the basement.
“Hey what are you doing?” Josh heard the man yell. “No, you can’t… no…I said stop!” The man yelled then Joshua heard a gun fire. The sound echoed in the basement to a deafening volume.
“What’s going on?” someone yelled from the top of the stairs.
“Nothing,” the man with the gun said and he left the basement. Joshua was going to try and see if the person who was shot was alright but another masked man came down the stairs too quickly and Josh thought it would be bad to yell out right in front of him since that could cause an unpleasant result.
A while later when the rebels were switching guard duty one of them mentioned something that caught Josh’s ear.
“Did you hear the palace is going to have a press conference soon?”
“Really? When?”
“In about an hour.”
“Oh, I wonder what they will say.”
“I don’t know but it would be foolish of them to announce that their Prince is missing.”
“Why is that?”
“Well it would cause mass chaos in the country and we wouldn’t want that to happen.”
“Yeah we would.”
“I know that I was being sarcastic.”
“Oh.”
Then one of the guards left. Josh wished he could hear was going to be said.

As she walked down the stairs, Skyler’s palms were sweating and her heart was beating quickly. She was very nervous about talking to the press. She was not very good at giving speeches to begin with, not to mention she had never spoken to the press before. At least she did not have to come up with what to say. That is what speechwriters are for, she thought. She met Miss Holly and Sir Bernard in the hallway outside the ballroom, where the press conference was being held.
“Are you ready?” Miss Holly asked.
“Yeah,” Skyler said as she smoothed her dress.
“You don’t have to do this you know.” Sir Bernard said.
“Yeah, but I want to.”
A man came up to Skyler and handed her a typed piece of paper with her speech. She thanked him and proceeded out to the ballroom.
As soon as she opened the door, the reporters started taking pictures of her and screaming questions. She walked slowly to the podium and began:
“Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for coming here today. I’m sure that you are all aware of the hostage situation happening now. It was reported on many television stations that his Highness, Prince Whitfield was one of those hostages. I am here to confirm that the prince is indeed being held hostage.” Skyler paused as a low rumble of voices echoed from the crowd.
“We do not have very much information at this time. I would like to say this to the men holding the Prince hostage: please contact us. We want to help you end this peacefully. That is all. Thank you.” The reporters began to shout more questions at Skyler, but she turned and walked out of the room.
Well that was sort of easy, Skyler thought. Skyler and the others spend the next half hour waiting silently in Josh’s office.
After a while, one of the assistants came into the office with a very blank look on his face.
“What’s wrong?” Skyler inquired.
“It’s just . . .” he began.
“Yes?”
“Well, the TV news is giving reports that His Highness was killed in the gunfire earlier this morning.”
“What?!?” Skyler screamed as she jumped up and ran to the next room. What she was on the television screen she could hardly believe. Suddenly her world became so strange. Everything around her slowed until it ceased to exist. All that was left in the room was her and the television screen with the words ‘Prince dead?’ flashing across the bottom.
She snapped back to reality when some person in the room bumped into her.
“Oh, excuse me,” she said. Skyler tried to listen intently on what the news reporter was saying but it was difficult because of the business of the room.
“Everyone, please keep the noise to a minimum.” Someone behind her yelled over the crowd. Skyler was then able to hear the TV.
“If you are just tuning in, let me review the newest developments for you. We have received a report that the prince was killed in gunfire earlier today in this building behind me. Let me reiterate to you that this is an unconfirmed report. We will be bringing you the latest developments as they become available to us.”
Miss Holly came up behind Skyler and laid a comforting hand on her shoulder.
“It’s not true,” Skyler shook her head. “No, no its not. It was an unconfirmed report. You hear the reporter, UNCONFIRMED.”
“Well, yes that is what she said.” Sir Bernard began. “But we must assume the worst.”
“No,” Skyler screamed. The entire room fell silent. “We will not assume anything!” She said as she slammed the door and went back to Josh’s office. She sat behind the desk and tried desperately not to cry, but it was no use.

The rest of the morning and early afternoon passed very slowly for Joshua. He did not know what time it was except for when he caught a quick glance at the person next to him’s watch. That was not very often either.
The masked men switched guarding positions every so often. The man who was guarding the hostages now, Josh noticed, was having some trouble with his mask. This particular man was very tall and thin. He was much taller than the other masked men. Josh noticed that he seemed to be the underdog of the group. The other rebels were always picking on him or yelling at him, from what Josh had observed. Therefore Josh took him to be the weakest link in the rebel group and decided to strike up conversation with him.
“Having some trouble with your mask?” Josh asked cautiously.
“Yeah, what’s it to you?” The rebel man said.
“I was just being friendly.” Josh said.
“Well, don’t. You’re not supposed to be talking anyway.” The rebel man said as he continued to fiddle with his mask. A few minutes later Josh suggested:
“Why don’t you just take the mask off? You’ll be much more comfortable.”
“Maybe I will.” The man said and he pulled his mask off. When he did so Josh could tell that his face was covered in red splotches, even though the light was dim. He must have a rash from the mask, Josh thought. The man had very dark features and an obvious scar on his chin.
A few minutes after the man removed his mask he seemed much more comfortable. Awhile later the man who seemed to be the leader of the group came stomping down the stairs.
“Great news…” he began, but stopped when he saw the man without the mask. His face turned bright red as he screamed:
“What are you doing?” He scared the man so much that Josh was sure he jumped a few feet.
“What do you mean?” The mask-less man asked nervously.
“Why do you have your mask off? Are you out of your mind?”
“No sir, it’s just, that, um, I, uh,” he stuttered.
“You had better put it back on and don’t let me ever catch you without it again.”
“Yes sir,” the man said as he struggled uncomfortably to put his mask back on.
“It seems we have good news to report.” The leader man began.
“The reporters are saying that the Prince is dead. Isn’t that amusing?”
“What?” Josh yelled.
“Yes, well it is quite a shame, really. They think that your dead and that means that the country will be in a shambles and it will make my work even easier. Oh well.” He said. Then he left the basement.
Josh prayed that Skyler and the others did not believe the report of his death. He wished he had a way of contacting them, but he didn’t. There was nothing he could do.

After what seemed like only a few minutes, Skyler heard a knock on the door.
“Come in,” she said as she wiped away the tears streaming down her cheeks.
“Miss Jones, the Spanish Ambassador has arrived and he wishes to speak with you.” Sir Bernard said.
“Alright, show him in.” She said even though she had no idea what she was going to say to him. Through the door came in a short, round, man with thinning dark hair.
“Hola, my name is Senor Domingo.” He said as he extended his hand.
“Hello, I am Dame Skyler Jones, it is a pleasure to meet you senor.” Skyler said as she shook his hand.
“Ah, senora, what horrible times these are.”
“Yes, sir, they are indeed.”
“I came here to meet with the prince, but obviously he is unavailable. I hope you would not mind me staying a few days anyway. Perhaps in hopes this terrible situation will be resolved quickly.”
“No, not at all. I believe a room has been made up for you in the guest wing…”
“Oh, senora, I shall stay at the embassy. I do not wish to intrude.” He interrupted.
“No, it’s perfectly alright. As long as you do not mind the chaos.”
“Not at all, I shall go unpack my things.” The man said as he left the room.

Miss Holly came into Josh’s office right after Senor Domingo left.
“Miss Jones we must discuss the situation with the Prince if he is indeed d…” She paused. “Well you know. This country needs a ruler. Just because the prince is being held hostage does not mean the world stops turning.”
“Yes, I know.” Skyler agreed.
“Well we still have a country to run. The other officials have been trying to do almost all of the work themselves since they do not want to add to your stress. However there are a few things that need your attention.”
“All right,” Skyler said.
“Good,” Miss Holly said as she walked toward the door. She then said out the door, “you may come in now.”
“Miss Jones, we have a few things for you to sign.” One man said as he walked through the door.
“Oh, OK,” Skyler said as she sat down at the desk. One of the men placed a piece of paper in front of her with a pen.
“What is this?” She asked.
“Oh, it’s not important. Just sign it please.”
“Well I am certainly not going to sign anything that I don’t know what it is.” She said matter-of-factly.
“Very well then. This first one is an order to keep all the press off of our grounds.”
“Oh, that is good. I will defiantly sign that one.”

By the time she had finished signing things it was nearly two o’clock p.m. It was only then that Skyler realized she had forgotten to eat lunch and she was absolutely famished.
While she was eating in the kitchen, she turned on the television to see if the reporters had any new developments in the hostage situation. Almost all of the news channels were still flashing ‘Prince dead?’ on their screens. That upset Skyler very much. She did not think that they should be allowed to do that if it was still an unofficial report.
One of the maids passing through the kitchen saw her and said,
“Miss Jones, you should not be watching that rubbish.”
“I know,” Skyler replied. “But I just can’t help it. I don’t know what else to do.”
The maid left and Skyler continued to eat her lunch alone. She was startled by a loud noise on the television.
“We have breaking news,” the TV reporter began. “We have confirmed that the Prince’s death report was false. I repeat: the report of the Prince’s death was false.”
Well, thank God, Skyler said to herself. But unfortunately, she still had no idea what was happening with the hostages and that scared her.

by request the rest of the story:

Josh must have fallen asleep because he awoke to feet pounding down the stairs and men talking.
“What is going on?” The rebel man who was standing guard on the hostages asked.
“We are having a meeting.” The leader man said.
“Alright,” the other man said.
“As you all know,” the lead rebel began. “We are going to demand that the royals give up their control of the kingdom so that we may take over. We will call them and demand that they do so or we will wreak havoc on their land. The time for that phone call is quickly approaching so we need to have a battle plan. Any suggestions?”
“Well do we know who has taken over temporary control of the country?”
“No we do not. This is why we are having this meeting down here.” The lead man said as he walked over toward Joshua.
“Hey, Princie, wake up.”
“What do you want?” Joshua asked.
“Be nice to us or we won’t be nice to you.”
“I’m sorry, what can I help you with sir?” Josh said with false politeness.
“Who is in charge of this country now that you are here and unable to fulfill your princely duties?”
“I do not know. If you haven’t noticed I’ve been kind of tied up here and I haven’t been able to phone my colleagues to ask them.” Joshua said sarcastically.
“Well you must have some idea. You’re the leader of the freakin’ country shouldn’t you know your own laws?”
“I do not know.” Josh said firmly.
“He’s lying.” One of the rebels said.
“Listen here, we know you know so you had better tell us.”
Josh didn’t say a word. They all just stood there in silence until the leader said,
“Fine, we’ll make the call without knowing, but we will ask you again later, maybe you need some time to think it over.”

After the Prince’s death report was announced as false, not too many other developments arose. Through out the afternoon, the reporters were getting restless. They had no new things to report and they resorted to making up rumors about what was really happening inside the building and reporting as facts them on the air. Then a few minutes later they would retract their statements.

Skyler was upset that they had no contact with the rebels who were holding Josh hostage. However there was nothing she could do about it. She was very tired from being woken up so early in the morning, so she decided to take a little nap.

She was not quite sure how long she slept, but she knew it was not very long. Skyler looked at the clock next to her bed. 3:15 p.m. it read. She slowly climbed out of bed and sleepily made her way down to the hustle and bustle of Josh’s office and adjoining conference room. She opened the door and found more police milling around than usual.
“What is going on?” She asked.
“We just received a call from the men holding the Prince hostage.”
“Really? That’s wonderful. What did they say?”
“I’m going to play the recording back for you.” The main detective said. He walked over to his recording device and pushed a button and the recorded conversation began to play.
“’Hello?’ a voice Skyler recognized as Sir Bernard’s began.
‘Is this the man in charge?’ A cold, mechanical voice said.
‘Yes, well sort of.’
‘Well whoever you are, we are holding your prince hostage and if you do not do exactly as we say we will kill him and unleash a war upon your country which will result in the deaths of many of your people. Then we will take over the country. We will call you back in two hours with more information’
‘What do you…’” Sir Bernard tried to say something but a click was heard in the recording indicating that the rebel representative had hung up his phone.
The detective switched off the recording device.
“We expect another call around 5 o’clock p.m.” He said.
“Oh,” Skyler said. “Well what are you going to do? You cannot let those people kill Joshua. You will have to give them what the want.”
“Well, Miss Jones, it is usually not our policy to deal with terrorists. Technically, however, it will be your decision what to do, not ours.”
“Oh,” Skyler said as she walked from the room. She knew that she should not give into the rebel’s wishes but how could she knowingly make a decision to end her fiancé’s life?
She wished it was not her decision to make. Then again, she had a feeling that if it was Sir Bernard’s decision he would not be as lenient as her.

Josh was not certain what had been said in the phone call made by the rebels but he did gather that it had something to do with a threat against him. He also guessed that something else was going to happen around five o’clock because the rebels were also talking about that time.
The door at the top of the stairs boomed open and the leader of the rebels stomped down the stairs.
“Alright boy, I have given you enough time to think it over now for the last time who is in charge at the palace.” He yelled.
“I told you I do not know.” Josh said.
Then the leader got very angry. He lunged at Joshua and grabbed him by the neck. If Josh had not been tied to the chair, which was tied to the pole, he was sure that he would have been lifted up toward the ceiling. He was almost choking Josh when he said.
“I am not toying with you now. You had better tell me or else.”
“If you kill me then you will never know.”
“Are you trying to be funny?”
“Look,” Joshua choked. “I told you I do not know exactly who is in charge. The law would say that my fiancé is the one in charge but I do not know if my royal adviser told her that or just took over himself. Frankly, it wouldn’t surprise me if he took control himself. That is all I know, really.”
“Very well, see now that wasn’t so hard, was it?” The leader said as he released Josh from his grasp.
“Next time we call, we shall ask for the girl.” The lead rebel said as he made his way back up the stairs.

The time before the nest call was supposed to come passed very slowly. Around four o’clock, a man came and found Skyler and told her she needed to have a meeting with the police chief and the head detective. She met them in Josh’s office.
“Miss Jones,” the police chief began. “We need to talk strategy. I think we need to storm the building and try and get the prince out now.”
“But, wouldn’t that be dangerous?” Skyler asked.
“Yes, it would.” The detective said.
“How dangerous?” Skyler inquired.
“Well,” the police chief began. “It could be very dangerous. We do not know what types of weapons that they have. We would be risking the lives of our men and perhaps,” he paused, “even his highness’s life.”
“No,” Skyler said firmly. “Then that is not an option. Why can’t we settle this peacefully? Why isn’t that an option?”
“Well that is not always possible. Sometimes these rebels do not wish for a peaceful settlement.”
“Then you will just have to come up with another idea.” Skyler said as she left the room.
After the disheartening conversation with the detective and the police chief, Skyler decided she would not get up set over anything else until the next phone call from the rebels.
By quarter to five everyone was nervously milling around Josh’s office waiting for the rebels to call. At exactly five o’clock the phone rang. Sir Bernard picked it up:
“Hello?”
“Yes, alright,” he said and removed the phone from his ear. “They want to speak to you.” He said to Skyler.
“What?” she asked.
“You, they want to speak to you.” He said as eh gestured toward her with the phone.
“Oh,” Skyler said nervously as she made her way to the phone. Her hands were shaking as she held the receiver up to her ear and said:
“Hello?”
“Is this the woman in charge?” The cold, mechanical voice she had heard before said.
“Yes” she answered.
“Good. I had said to the man before that I was going to give you instructions now. However, I have since changed my mind. I am not going to give you instructions. Instead, I will call you sometime in the next week with those instructions. Ta-Ta.”
“But wait, what…” Skyler said but no one was there to hear her. The rebel man had hung up the phone.
Slowly Skyler put the phone back on the desk. She did not know what to say to everyone in the room.
“Well…” Sir Bernard asked anxiously.
“He did not give any instructions. He said that he would call back sometime in the next week with instructions.
“What?” Sir Bernard said in disbelief.
“I, um, need to, um, leave. I can’t be, be here right now.” Skyler stammered. She then walked over to Miss Holly and said. “Get me a car please.”
“Ok,” Miss Holly said. “I’ll get the driver to…”
“No,” Skyler interrupted. “I mean get me a car that I can drive and give me the keys.”
“But,” Miss Holly began but Skyler held up her hand to stop her. “Yes ma’am, right away.”
Skyler drove away from the palace not knowing where to go.

“What did you do that for?” Josh yelled at the lead rebel who had made the call to Skyler from the basement so he could hear.
“I do not need advice from you on how to run my hostage situation,” the leader yelled at Joshua.
“So,” one of the other rebels began cautiously. “Why did you do that?”
“Well, it is very simple. I gave them another week to be in suspense. This way that girl will dangle in the hopes that we will let her precious prince go. She will have nightmares every night and pray that he is safe and will be returned safely to her. So that way by the time we call back she will be willing to do almost anything because she will be so desperate. Women are stupid and emotional that way.” The leader concluded.
“Hey!” Josh yelled even though he knew that he should not say anything. “My fiancé is not stupid. She’ll see through your stupid plan.”
“Oh really?” The leader said. “Well then, I guess we will just have to wait and see.”

Skyler eventually returned from her drive. When she did, she found that the Spanish ambassador had left. Just as well, she thought. She would rather not have a houseguest to entertain at this point in time.
The next week passed like an eternity even though Skyler had millions of things to do. Perhaps it was the workload that made it seem so long. Nonetheless she had to keep going. It was best for her to keep her mind busy because if she ever stopped, she was not sure that she could start up again.
Every morning she received updates on the hostage situation, though there rarely were any. She had to have meetings with the group of men who were helping her rule the country. To top it off, she still had a wedding to plan because she refused to stop the plans just because of little inconveniences, like the missing groom.
The hostage situation was quickly becoming old news. This surprised Skyler because it obviously involved a very important person. Every day there were fewer reporters at the scene. Unfortunately, the hostage situation seemed to have caused mass panic through out the country. Not too many horrible events had occurred. More riots happened and the papers reported apocalyptic type situations, but it really was not that bad so chose Skyler to believe.
Every day she would ask Sir Bernard:
“Are you sure things aren’t as bad as they say?”
“No,” he would reply. “They are blowing everything out of proportion.”
Skyler, however, did not believe him. Mainly because he always had a worried look on his face when she asked him. She knew that if Sir Bernard was worried that it must really be bad. Not to mention there were the little things that tipped her off.
Skyler was no longer allowed to leave the palace. Any time she had to have a meeting with someone, like the wedding coordinator, they had to come to her. Heightened security was everywhere. Skyler insisted though that she give a daily address to the nation, though she always said the same thing. She told them that they were trying to find ways to rescue the prince, though no demands were made by the rebels, she was sure that the standoff would quickly come to a peaceful end. She was sure everyone had stopped listening by the second day, but it mad her happy just to say something and to let the rebels know that someone was in power.
By the time the last week in July came around Josh had been missing for two weeks. Skyler could not believe the rebels had not called her. Well it did not surprise her that much, but it still made her angry. Every time the phone in Josh’s office rang they all jumped and wished it would be the rebels, but it never was.
Finally nearly three weeks after their last phone call, the Rebels contacted Skyler.
“Hello,” She said nervously as she answered the phone.
“Ah, we speak again.” The cold voice said.
“Why haven’t you called?” Skyler asked angrily.
“Aw, did you miss me that much?” The rebel teased.
“No I would just like to end this whole thing as quickly as possible.” Skyler said.
“Agreed. Now these are my terms. You have twenty-four hours from now to complete the task.”
“What is the task?”
“I’m going to tell you. You will do as we say or we will murder you prince. You must hold a press conference and say that you are relinquishing control of the country and handing it over to us. You will then evacuate the palace and all other government buildings and let us control the country. Then we will talk about letting your prince go.”
“Let me get this straight, you want us to give you control for the possibility of getting Joshua back.”
“Basically.”
“That really doesn’t give us much choice, does it?” Skyler said.
“Of course you have a choice. You do not have to give us control of the country. You are welcome to stay in power. Only then we will kill your prince and unleash a war upon this nation. The choice is yours. Remember only twenty-four hours. Which means it all has to be completed by nine hundred hours tomorrow.” Then the rebel hung up the phone.
“What did he say? Is it bad?” Sir Bernard asked.
“Yeah, it’s bad.” Skyler said. “Listen to it on the recording device and you’ll see.”
After they listened to it every one got right to work. They scheduled a press conference immediately to inform the public of the rebel’s ultimatum. At eleven o’clock they decided to have a strategy meeting to decide their options. Until then everyone was busy running around gathering all the information they could.
Maps of the building, maps of the sewer systems and maps of the country were all spread around the tables in the big meeting room. At six o’clock on the dot everyone crammed their way into the room to listen to what was being presented by the police chief, detective, and heads of staff at the palace that were deciding a course of action.
“Welcome everyone,” they began. “It is a shame we have to meet under such circumstances, but we have gathered you all here to discuss strategies for ending this standoff. “
“We had hoped to end this peacefully, but it now seems that is not an option. The rebels have made it very clear that their threat is non-negotiable. We have gathered the greatest experts in the country and asked for their advice on the situation. They have come up with a few plans. None of these plans are ideal but they are all we have.”
“The first few options are not desirable, but they are options none the less. The first one is obviously to give the rebels what they want. Therefore no one gets hurt, no war is started and they take over the country…”
“Um excuse me,” Skyler interrupted. “But people do get hurt. There is not guarantee that they will not harm Josh and then those rebels would be in control of the country so that will hurt a lot of people. “
“Right. . . that is why that is a last resort.”
“No, that is NOT an option.” Skyler said.
“Yes, ma’am. Second is to fill the building with poison there fore killing everyone one inside, including all the rebels. This would eliminate their threat to us.”
“Um, problem, you would also kill the prince.” Skyler said as if their suggestion was a joke.
“Well that would be an unfortunate side effect.”
“But then what would happen?” said Sir Bernard anxiously.
“Dame Jones would take over and be crowned the new leader.” Sir Bernard sighed disappointedly and Skyler said:
“No, next option.”
“Another option that we have would be to surround the building with the military and police and break in and have a hand to hand combat with the rebels.”
“Well that is better than the other two suggestions.” Skyler said.
“Yes but it is very dangerous. We would be risking the lives of many of our men and even the prince’s life. We also do not know how they have set up inside we do not know where the prince is.”
“Any other suggestions.” Skyler sighed this was not going well.
“Just one that would be to do nothing and hope that the rebel’s threat to unleash war upon the country was an empty threat.”
“That’s it?!” Skyler yelled as she stood up from her seat.
“You’re telling me that you got the best experts in the country together and that is the best you came up with. That is unacceptable. There has to be another way.” She said as she stormed out of the room.
Skyler went out into the gardens to sulk about the bad options her advisers had given her. She was so offended by the fact that they could even suggest just letting Josh die. They must not even care, she thought.

Josh was getting very restless. He had been stuck in the same position for . . . well he did not know how long it had been. All of the days meshed together; they all seemed the same. He was so angry with the rebels he did not know what to do.
“How much longer are we going to have to say like this?” He yelled to the one rebel. Josh was also angry with the other hostages. They just seemed to be sitting there and taking all the beatings and things the rebels threw at them. Josh was the only one who had ever said anything to the rebels. He could not believe that the other hostages did not care enough to say anything.
“Keep quiet.” The rebel said.
“No! I won’t. I want to speak with your leader.” Josh demanded.
“No, you have no rights. Incase you haven’t noticed you’re our prisoner. You do not get to demand things.”
“Well, I may be your prisoner, but I am still the ruler of this country and I demand to see your leader.”
“Actually you are no longer in charge. That chick fiancé of yours is the one in charge. By the way how did you snag her? She’s quite a little catch.”
“Do not speak of her in that way.” Josh said angrily.
“Why? What are you going to do about it?” The rebel taunted.
“I’ll have you head if I ever get out of here.” Josh said, which he thought was a very medieval thing to say, but he couldn’t think of anything better at the time.
“Oohhhhhh, I’m scared!” The rebel said sarcastically. Just then the rebel leader clomped his way down the stairs.
“What’s with all this talking?” He demanded.
“Sorry sir,” the rebel began. “This hostage is just being stubborn. He wanted to speak to you, sir.”
“Oh did he now? Well what have you got to say to me?” He asked Josh.
“Well,” Josh began. “I wanted to know how much longer I am going to have to stay here.”
“Actually not long at all. You see I have made my demand to your little girlfriend and I will either have what I want by nine a.m. tomorrow and then I’ll kill you or I won’t get what I want and . . . I’ll kill you. So you see it’s a win, win situation. For me at least.” The rebel leader laughed.
“They will find a way to destroy you, you know.” Josh threatened.
“Yeah, whatever.” The leader said as he left the basement.
Josh silently prayed that they would find a way.

After a few hours of thinking and planning, Skyler thought she came up with the perfect plan. She called a meeting of all the officials and organized all her materials so she could present to the group.
Once they were all in the meeting room she stood up and began.
“By using parts of the plans previously presented, I believe I have come up with an ideal plan on how to rescue the prince.” She said.
“Well let’s hear it.” Sir Bernard said.
“It was previously suggested that we used poison, but what about tear gas. That would distract the rebel’s long enough for some people to get inside. Right?”
“I suppose, but it would also affect our men.”
“Not if they wear masks.” Skyler said.
“Yes, that is true. But, we still do not even know where in the building they are located.”
“Yes, we do. Remember what Mr. Matthews said they all went down into the basement. So I figure we use a heat vision surveillance system to see where they are and how many of them that there are. That would work right?” Skyler asked.
“Yes”
“Good, that is why I already sent someone to do that and they should be returning very soon.”
They paused to wait for Skyler’s heat vision spy and he returned fifteen minutes later.
“What I have discovered,” the spy began. “Is that most of the men, about five of them are on the first level of the building in an interior room. There are about six to seven people in the basement, but it is safe to assume most of them are hostages.”
“Excellent,” Skyler said as the spy took a seat. “So if we tear gas the first floor, then send our men in to capture the rebels, while this is happening we send someone into the basement to rescue the hostages, that should work.”
“Ok and how do you propose we do that?” Sir Bernard asked doubtable. “It’s not like we can just walk in and there is no exterior entrance to the basement.” He said pointing to the map.
“Ah,” Skyler said. “There is no door to the basement, but there are ventilation ducts.”
“Well that is a good plan, except for a few problems.” The police chief began. “First none of my men would be small enough to fit into a ventilation duct.”
“No that is why I will go.” Skyler said. A small mumbling of ‘no, she can’t do that!’ went through the room.
“Miss Jones with all due respect there is no way you can do that. I mean you’re not trained.”
“That brings me to my second point,” The police chief said. “There must be one or more of their men in the basement watching the hostages therefore you will inevitably encounter resistance.”
“Look, I’m a big girl; I can take care of myself. I took self defense classes. Not to mention we will have the element of surprise.” What Skyler said was not a total lie. Josh had forced her to take self defense classes soon after her return. She thought that they were stupid, but not they would pay off.
“Yes, but it is very dangerous.”
“Well do any of you have a better idea?”
The room was silent while everyone looked at the floor, not having anything to say.
“I thought so. It’s settled then. Now I figure the best time to do this would be at night so I was thinking around midnight.”
“Ok people, you heard the woman, we have a little over eight hours to organize this so lets go! Chop, Chop!”
Then everyone started rushing around. They had to call the reporters and tell them to leave building that the hostages were in because the rebels were probably watching the reporter’s broadcasts and they would see the heightened police activity and get suspicious. Then they got all the maps of the building to plan the route they were going to take. They had to organize a team, gather equipment, and give Skyler some minimal training before she would be able to participate. They only had until eleven o’clock to complete those tasks as well because that was the time at which they were to meet at the building where the hostages were.
A few of the police men showed Skyler some of the different types of equipment they would have to use. They showed her bullet proof vests, night vision goggles, different ropes and hooks for climbing, all sorts of gadgets.
“Now the most important thing,” one of the officers said as he pulled a hand gun out of a pouch on the table. “Your weapon.”
“No way,” Skyler said as she backed away from the table.
“What?” The confused officer asked.
“No guns.”
“But you have to have one, it is self protection.”
“It doesn’t matter, no guns. I don’t believe in them.”
“Very well, but don’t say I did not offer.” He said as he placed the gun back on the table.

By five o’clock they had a very well mapped out battle plan. Then Skyler ate a quick dinner and continued her rough training.
They practiced many self defense moves. Skyler caught on quickly, but it was not easy. She had to do kicks and practice blocking attacks from the other person. She could tell she was going to get a lot of bruises.
They all spent a lot of time reviewing their plans. They tried to be prepared for every possible situation.

By eight o’clock it was time for Skyler to get ready. Mainly because it was at least an hour’s drive to where they were going.

Skyler stood in front of the mirror and looked at her reflection. She was wearing black boots, black pants, the utility belt given to her by the police, a black long sleeve shirt and she held in her had the black mask she was going to wear. Luckily, she thought to herself, it is not a very hot night. Since it was the first of August it could have been very warm but it was only in the upper 60’s. Skyler put her hair up in a tight bun. She did not want it hanging in her face when she was climbing through the ducts. She walked down the stairs and found everyone waiting to wish her luck.
“Are you sure you want to do this?” Sir Bernard asked. Skyler was surprised because he actually seemed genuinely concerned. “It is very dangerous. No one would blame you if you backed out and left it to the professionals.”
“No, this is something I have to do. I have to do it my way. I could never forgive myself if something happened to Josh and I had done nothing about it.” Skyler said.
“Very well then, good luck.” Sir Bernard said as he patted her shoulder.
“Everyone is waiting outside for you, Miss Jones.” Miss Holly said. “I wish you luck.”
“Thank you.” Skyler said as she made her way past all the other well wishers. Toward the end of the line she saw her old bodyguard Ivan. As soon as Josh was captured she relived him of his duties and made him head of her palace security team. The large man seemed to be welling up with tears as he wished her a safe rescue. Then Skyler left the palace and climbed into the police van with the other men and they drove off toward the hostage building.

During the drive Skyler thought about the positive out comes of this whole endeavor. She really could not come up with very many except the fact that her royalty lessons had been suspended during all the drama. Skyler’s stomach was full of butterflies. She tried to calm herself down but there was no use. She was just too nervous.
They arrived at the building a little before ten p.m. They gathered in a small wooded area a few hundred yards from the actual building.
“Here, wear this,” one of the police men whispered as they handed her a bullet proof vest that had the word ‘police’ written across it in big letters. Skyler put it on; it was very heavy.
“Alright everyone gather ‘round.” The police chief whispered as he laid a map on the ground. “This is the plan. You three men will throw the tear gas through the front windows, give it 30 seconds to spread then enter the building, but don’t forget your masks! Meanwhile you will give a signal to Jacobs who will be with Miss. Jones at the entrance to the duct to the basement. When you receive the signal Miss. Jones you will enter the duct and crawl as quietly as possible to the area where we think the men are being held captive. There will be little vents for you to look through. When you feel the area is safe you will climb through one of the vents and release the hostages.
“We have equipped you with wire cutters and other instruments to assist you in doing so. Now there is a possibility of one of the rebel guards being down in the basement area. If that is the case, you will have to capture him as well, but try not to kill him.”
“I don’t think that will be a problem.” Skyler said nervously.
“Then,” the police chief continued. “Once our men have gained some control on the first floor they will come down into the basement and assist you. At that time they will also call for backup, which will be everyone else waiting outside the building to come in. Any questions?”
No one said a thing.
“Good, hopefully we can get this all accomplished with little violence.” The police chief said, and then he put his hand in the middle of the circle of officers and said, “To a safe mission.”
Everyone put their hand in and repeated what he said. Then it was time for them to move into position.

Stealthily Skyler and Jacobs made their way toward the back of the building. They crawled very low on the ground, taking advantage of the many bushes and statues to hide behind. Skyler noticed that this particular building had very nice landscaping in the back.
They reached their position at the corner of the building near the entrance to the ventilation duct. They made sure that they were not visible to anyone inside the building through windows or doors and then they waited for a signal. Skyler put her mask on, but it was difficult because she was trying not to mess up her hair. Once the mask was on all that was exposed were her eyes and mouth. Skyler had no idea how people wore these because they were very uncomfortable and itchy.
Soon they heard a faint sound of breaking glass. Skyler looked at her watch, it read 11:55. She then made a silent prayer that everything would go well and took a deep breath. Inside the building muffled sounds of coughing and scuffling could be heard. Then they heard more glass breaking noises which Skyler assumed was the police entering the building. Skyler hoped that the people in the basement could not hear the noises as well as she could otherwise they would know she was coming.
“It’s almost time,” Jacobs whispered as he walked over to the duct entrance. He pulled out a tiny screw driver and began to take the grate off as quietly as possible. Skyler helped him put it on the ground and looked in the hole. It was small but she was sure she could fit through; however it was clear that anyone much bigger than she would not. It was also very dark so she got out her tiny flashlight. Then the signal came. The police chief used a flash light to send them a signal in Moore’s Code.
“Ok you can go, and be careful.” Jacobs said. So Skyler took a deep breath and Jacobs helped her into the duct.
Skyler slid her way through the duct holding the flashlight in her mouth. She tried to be as quite as possible but with every movement she prayed the duct would not creak. She came to the first vent and tried to look through it. The room it lead to was very dark and it appeared to be some sort of closet. Skyler assumed that that wasn’t the room she was to enter and she kept on going.
Skyler came to a fork in the duct. She decided to go left but that lead to a dead end with no vents to look through. She then had to back up to where the fork was and go right this time.
When she came around the next corner in the ducts she saw a tiny bit of light coming into the duct so she made her way toward that vent. She was also surprised how quiet it was; she could not hear any noise from upstairs at all. As she neared the vent she slowed down and peeked through it. When she did she was sure she had found the room where the hostages were being held. Since she no longer needed the flashlight she put it back on her utility belt and took a closer look through the vent.
In the room she saw men tied to poles that were in the center of the vast room. The poles, she assumed, were holding up the building. She saw one man who was slumped down in the chair he was tied to very much and there was a puddle of dark liquid all around him. She did not really want to know if that was blood, but it probably was and that man was probably dead.
Just then a wave of panic went through her. What if they had hurt Josh as well, she thought. But she kept going to the next vent. When she peered through that vent she saw two more groups of men tied to poles. She saw Josh tied to the pole furthest from her. She breathed a quiet sigh of relief that he seemed to be alright. She saw another man off to the side but she did not get a good look at him so she decided to go to the next vent to get a closer look.
At the next vent she saw a man dressed in all black like her. He was also wearing a mask like hers. She assumed this man was one of the rebels because he was not tied to anything. In fact, he was asleep. Skyler could not believe her luck that he was asleep but she figured that he would wake up as soon as she exited the vent.
Skyler decide that it was best to exit the vent at a place not so close to the sleeping rebel. So she backed up to the furthest vent that was still in the room. She took out her screw driver and took off the grate. It made a small creek, but she did not think anyone noticed. The hole she had to climb through was very small but she refused to go back now. She had to take off her utility belt because she knew she would not fit while still wearing it. She decided the best way to get through the grate would be to dangle her feet down and hang by her arms until she decide how far she had to fall.
She was a tiny bit afraid of falling through the grate for a few reasons. First, she figured it would make a noise and she did not want to wake up the sleeping rebel. Second, she did not want to twist an ankle or anything because that would be very bad because she would not be able to get away from the rebels then.
She sat on the edge of the hole and put her feet through. She put on her gloves to make sure she had a good grip on the edge of the hole, took a deep breath and started to lower herself down into the room. When she was hanging with her arms completely straightened she could not tell how far from the floor she was, but she guessed it was less than two feet. She took another deep breath and let go of the vent. She landed on the floor with a quiet thump. She bent her knees and crouched down on the floor. She crawled over to the wall and peeked around the corner to see the rebel. He had not stirred awake. Thank God, she thought.
Unfortunately, a few of the hostages had heard her and were now looking right at her. Josh was one of them. She realized that she would not be recognized with her mask and black attire so she stood up a bit and pointed to her bullet proof vest which said ‘police’ on it. This seemed to take the worried look off of their faces.
Skyler quietly crawled her way over to the nearest hostage. She began to take a look at what was attaching him to the pole. It seemed his hands were tied behind the chair with plastic wiring and his arms were attached to the chair with the same. Then the chair itself was tied to the pole with a very thick rope. Skyler decide the best bet was to clip the plastic wiring around the man’s hands.
She got out her scissors only to find that there was not enough room to slip them in the gap and she was afraid she would cut him. She would need a smaller pair of scissors for him. She held up her index finger and mouthed reassuringly ‘one second’. Then she crawled the whole way down to Josh and looked at his ropes. His hands were tied the same way as the first man but it there was a bit more room for her to slide her scissors in. But before she could, he whispered:
“Do I know you?” She immediately clasped her hand over his mouth so he could not speak. Then with her other hand over her own mouth she imitated the ‘Shh!’ sound. She looked at the rebel guard who was stirring in his sleep. She paused, not moving an inch, but he went back to sleep without noticing her.
She removed her hand from Josh’s mouth. He mouthed “sorry” to her, but she got right back to cutting his plastic restraints. When she did so it made a louder noise than she had anticipated. She quickly cut Josh free of his chair, but it was too late; the rebel on guard had awoken.
“Hey what are you doing here? Where did you come from?” He asked groggily. Then he noticed the ‘police’ word on her vest. “You’re not one of us…” he said turning toward the desk.
Skyler assumed he was reaching for a weapon and quickly moved toward an alcove in the basement. Just incase he was a bad shot; she did not want him to hit Josh. She heard a click of a gun and everything went into slow motion. She dove for the floor but she wasn’t fast enough and she felt something hit her shoulder. She let out a squeal of pain as she landed behind the wall. She looked at her shoulder and saw that, luckily, the bullet had hit her vest, but it was still painful.
The rebel man continued to shoot at her but she was safe behind the wall. She figured that the men upstairs would most defiantly hear the gunshots so she had to act quickly. She scanned the small area she was in and found an empty pain can and some bocks of wood. She needed to distract the guard long enough to get closer and knock the gun out of his hand, which she knew was very risky but she had no other choice.
She chose the paint can and peeked around the corner. The rebel man was standing in the open fiddling with his gun. She hoped it was out of bullets and threw the paint can as hard as she could at his head. As soon as it left her hand she started toward the rebel man. The can caught him off guard and hit his hand. Skyler dove at the startled man and knocked him to the floor. He fired the gun but it missed her and hit the ceiling. They rolled along the floor all the while kicking and punching. Then the rebel man, who was much larger than Skyler, pinned her down.
Skyler knew she was done fore when he pointed his gun right at her head. She shut her eyes and heard the trigger click, but nothing happened. This time the gun really was out of bullets. She brought her feet up and kicked the man as hard as she could in the chest. He landed sprawled on his back in the middle of the floor, the wind knocked out of him. Skyler got up, ripped the gun out of the stunned man’s hands and threw it across the room.
She walked away from the man for a second to pick up the gun she threw since she figured it was not a good idea to leave a weapon just lying around. When she did, she heard Josh behind her yell:
“Watch out!”
Then she felt the man grab a hold of her from behind. Using what she had learned in self defense class she flipped her attacker over her onto the floor. Amazed by her own strength, Skyler stood there unsure of what to do next. The rebel man, however, was resilient and he began to get up. Skyler then started to run away, which was stupid since she was in a basement with only one exit which was being blocked by the rebel man.
The rebel man started after her and that is when Skyler’s adrenalin started pumping. She fought him off as long as she could but he was very persistent and she was getting tired. She was actually amazed at what she was able to do. She fell down a few times, but was able to get back up. She kicked the man into a wall and he fell to the ground. She thought he was knocked out but when she turned around he lunged at her but then fell to the ground. When Skyler turned around she saw that Josh had hit him over the head with the gun. She tied the man up with some string she found on the floor.
Skyler went to pick up her scissors which she had dropped in the process of getting beaten up. She went over to one of the other men who was tied up and began to clip the plastic wire when she felt a hand on her shoulder. She got up to see Josh standing there. He looked very thin and his face was dirty.
“Thank you so much,” he began. “I can never thank you enough, actually, but who are you? I have this strange feeling that I know you from somewhere.” He went to take her mask off but as he did they heard footsteps on the stairs.
“We’re being attacked,” a weary voice said. Skyler quickly shoved Josh back into his seat and hid behind some boxes under the stairs.
The man then stumbled down the stairs; he was bleeding badly from his arm. “The boss said we are to kill the prisoners now.” He said as he stepped onto the basement floor. He looked around and noticing the basement in obvious disarray he said:
“Hey, what’s going on …” But he said no more because Skyler hit him in the back of the head with a paint can, knocking him to the ground.
A few seconds later more footsteps were heard on the stairs, but this time it was the police reinforcements.
“This way your highness.” They said as they lead Josh up the stairs. He followed reluctantly. It was only when he was gone that Skyler took off her mask.
She noticed that one of the officers was Jacobs who said to her:
“So how was it?”
“Well, it was pretty brutal. I’m thankful for this bullet proof vest though.” She said as she pointed to the bullet entry spot on her vest.
“Wow that must have hurt,” Jacobs said. “I bet you could have used that gun.”
“Not really,” Skyler said as she rubbed her sore shoulder.
“You should go and see the medics.”
“I will then,” Skyler replied. “But I want to get everyone untied first.”
“Wait, any casualties?” One officer asked her.
“Yeah,” She said. “There is one guy over there.” She said as she pointed to the corner of the room.”
Skyler released all the hostages and once she was satisfied with how things in the basement were going, she went up the stairs.
Upstairs, it looked like a war zone. Bullet holes were everywhere. There had obviously been quite a battle. A few bodies under sheets lie on the floor but not too many. She ran into the police chief near the door.
“Good job, Miss Jones. I must say I am quite impressed.” He said.
“Thanks.” She said as she painfully tried to remove her bullet proof vest. The chief noticed her struggle and said:
“Can I get a medic over here? This girl is injured.”
Then an EMT came and took here to an ambulance where they gave her ice for her shoulder. It was only then that Skyler took an opportunity to look around. Even thought it was well past midnight, the area around the building was very bright. Huge flood lights lit up the entire front lawn. Off in the distance, behind a police barricade, reporters were swarming everywhere.
Skyler asked the EMT where Josh was, but he did not know. He thought they might have taken him to the local hospital with the other hostages, but he was not sure. Skyler headed over toward the reporters because she felt that she should make a statement. On here way she heard a voice calling out behind her.
“Hey, wait! Wait please!” She recognized the voice as Josh’s. She did not turn. As he neared her he said:
“Are you the woman who rescued me from the basement?”
She turned to see the absolutely astonished look on his face and said:
“That depends”
“You?!” Josh said with amazement.
“Yup, me.” Skyler laughed.
“You are the one who did all that major butt kicking in the basement?”
“Yeah, that’s me. Betcha didn’t know I could do that.”
“No I didn’t.”
The reporters finally realized who they were and started yelling to them to come closer. Skyler started toward them, but Josh grabbed her arm and pulled her back.
“Have I ever mentioned how much I love you?” He said to her.
“Ummmm, yeah maybe a few times.” She laughed as he pulled her into a big hug. He picked her up off the ground and they both forgot that they were in front of a million cameras. The next morning their picture was on the front of every newspaper in the world.

The next few days Josh did nothing but rest. Skyler did not mind though, he had been though so much. He most defiantly deserved a break.
In the hostage standoff only four people, one police officer and three rebels were killed. In addition to the one hostage, who worked for Mr. Brown the local government official. All of the other hostages got off with minor cuts and bruises. Their most serious aliment, in addition to sleep deprivation, was dehydration. All the rebels who were involved in the whole situation were captured and are now serving life sentences. It was determined that they rebels were from the Chosen group and they were responsible for the fire as well.
Josh still had a hard time believing that Skyler was the one who rescued him, but he made sure that everyone knew that it was her. Since she already was dammed, he decided to give her the highest horary medals for her bravery. Other members of the police force received the medals as well.
When Josh returned, Sir Bernard went back to being his usual bitter self, but Skyler never forgot the fact that when she was about to leave to rescue Josh, he actually showed a little bit of caring and compassion.

As things began to return to normal, Skyler and Josh’s weddings plans went full speed ahead. Though he was gone nearly a month, Josh refused to let the wedding be postponed on his account. So with less than a month until the wedding, there was much to do. Everyday was filled with much planning.
As September first grew closer, Skyler’s nerves and excitement grew as well. So did Josh’s. Their nerves, however, were not cold feet. They just could not wait to finally be husband and wife.

On the morning of her wedding, Skyler could hardly contain her excitement. As she stood looking in the mirror while in her wedding dress she could hardly believe she was looking at herself. The person staring back at her truly looked like a princess. Well, she thought to herself, I guess that’s good considering I’m going to be one. Actually she was going to be a queen because once Josh was married, him and his bride became King and Queen of the country.
She could also hardly believe that they were able to get everything ready on time, but they managed.
Skyler could hardly contain her excitement as she prepared to walk down the isle. This truly was the greatest day of her life. As Skyler and Miss Holly, who was one of her bride’s maids, made their way toward the chapel, Skyler said to Miss Holly:
“This is my wedding day; I can’t believe it’s finally here. I’ve been through so much to get here and now nothing is going to stop it.”

Then as the church doors open and the music played Skyler put on a great smile as she walked toward her new, happy life.

the final part:

Truely Meant to Be

Skyler walked down the isle to the beat of “The Wedding March”. Her heart was beating so fast she was afraid it would come through her chest. She gripped tighter on her bouquet of flowers. She watched the first of her bride’s maids reach the front of the church and stand off to the side of the alter.
She looked around the church and it was positively packed with guests. Skyler kept walking, but it seemed like she would never reach the end of the church. Finally, when she saw the last of her bride’s maids reached the alter she was able to see Joshua standing there. He was grinning at her. She smiled back, though she was not sure he saw since her veil shielded her face.
She reached the front of the church and the music stopped. She turned to face Josh and he removed the veil from her face after she had given her bouquet to Miss Holly, who was one of her bride’s maids to hold. The minister stepped in front of them and began.
“Dearly beloved, we are gathered here in the presence of God to join these two people in Holy Matrimony. If there is anyone here who feels these tow should not be joined in holy wedlock speak now or forever hold your peace.”
Just then, the doors to the church flew open and everyone looked toward the noise. Standing in the doorway were two royal guards. Skyler could see that there were also a few more people behind them.
“Gentlemen! What is the meaning of this?” Sir Bernard inquired with a smirk.
“Pardon me, your Highness, but we must speak with you. It is very urgent.” One of the guards said.
“Well as you can see,” Josh began. “I am rather busy at the moment. Can’t this wait?”
“I’m sorry sir, this cannot wait.” Said the other guard.
Josh had now turned toward the men. Looking very irritated, he said:
“Very well, what is the problem gentlemen?”
“Um perhaps,” Skyler interrupted. “We should not be screaming this conversation across the entire church.”
“True,” Josh agreed quietly. Then louder he said, “Excuse me a moment.” He went toward the two guards. Skyler followed quickly behind while trying to gather up the fabric of her dress. Once they and Sir Bernard were outside the doors were shut and they were out of earshot of the wedding guests.
“Yes, what is the problem?” Josh asked again.
“Well, sir, I’m afraid you cannot get married. At least not today, not to her.”
“What?!” Skyler stammered.
“And why not?” Josh asked impatiently.
“Well it seems, sir, that you are already married.”
“Excuse me?” Skyler screamed she was furious. “When were you planning on sharing this bit of news? The Honeymoon?”
“What do you mean I’m already married?” Josh asked.
“Wait, back up.” Skyler interrupted. “What do you mean? How can you not know you are already married?” Skyler asked Josh, who shrugged his shoulders. Then they both looked at the guard who was giving them the news and said, “Explain” in unison.
“Well not married per say . . .” The man paused. Now Skyler was really angry. She grabbed the man’s arm and screamed:
“Look, pal, incase you didn’t notice this is my wedding day. Not to mention, a church full of very important people are waiting for us so could you please hurry the explanation up a bit before I . . .”
Skyler was interrupted by Josh pulling her away from the guard and saying, “Ok, calm down please . . . “
“Yes, well perhaps you should explain yourself.” Sir Bernard said to the guard.
Just as the guard was about to speak, one of the other men in the room, who up until then had said nothing, spoke.
“I will explain,” He said as he stepped into the circle that was formed by the two guards, Sir Bernard, Josh, in his tuxedo, and Skyler, clutching the train of her wedding gown.
“And who are you?” Josh asked impatiently.
“I am François Davin, royal advisor to Brigitte Capón, Princess of Monaco. You see, your Highness, this man was mistaken to say that you are married. What he should have said, which is the truth, is that you have been betrothed to Princess Brigitte Capón.”
“Betrothed? But, how could I have not known about this?” Josh asked glancing toward Sir Bernard.
“Oh,” Sir Bernard said innocently. “You mean you were unaware of that?”
“Obviously” Josh said.
“Hm, that’s strange.” Sir Bernard chuckled.
“You knew?” Skyler asked him. She was about to take a step toward Sir Bernard to yell at him more, but Josh, sensing this, held her back.
“Unfortunately,” François said, “This is a legal matter and must be resolved before any event takes place.”
“Yes, of course.” Josh said. “Well then I shall go and inform the guests.”
“What?” Skyler said.
“Well there will be no wedding today Madame.” François said.
“Fine,” Skyler said as she stomped off toward her dressing room.
“Skyler,” Josh called after her, but she slammed the door before he had the chance to say anything else.

Skyler stood in front of the mirror. She could not believe that her wedding day was ruined. She was also furious that no one mentioned that Josh had been betrothed to some other woman.
“This is ridiculous,” she told herself as she struggled to remove her veil. “Someone had to have known. Why didn’t they say something sooner? Maybe they were out to get us. Maybe it was . . .” But her thought was interrupted by a knock at the door. She did not answered it but just continued sulking while removing her jewelry.
The knock came again, this time accompanied by a voice.
“Skyler, it’s me, please open the door.” Joshua said as he knocked.
Skyler sighed and opened the door for him. Then she sat down and began to take off her shoes.
“Listen,” he said cautiously. “I know you’re upset . . .”
Skyler interrupted him, “Upset? Me?” She began sarcastically. “No, never. I’m just utterly furious and humiliated, but not upset.”
“That’s understandable,” Josh said.
“How can you be so calm? Aren’t you mad?” Skyler asked.
“Well yeah, but I have self control.”
“So do I!”
“I know . . . I just meant that . . . I just want to get this over as quickly as possible so we can get married. Ok?”
“Yeah,” Skyler agreed.
“So let’s change our clothes so we can go back to the palace. Then we can sit down and discuss this with the princess and . . .”
“Whoa, wait! She’s here? The princess is here?”
“Well, yeah,” Josh said without making eye contact with Skyler who was now even angrier.
“What did she think that she was going to show up and I was going to be all ‘Oh OK, here you can have my fiancé!’?”
“Don’t get mad at me!” Josh said. “I didn’t invite her.”
“Fine, just leave!” Skyler scoffed.
“What did I do?” Josh asked.
“I have to change and I’m not going to do it with you standing there.” Skyler said.
Josh then made a noise that sounded suspiciously like “aw” but Skyler shot him a look that made him bolt out the door as quickly as possible.
Skyler re-put on the sweats that she wore to the church earlier that morning and headed toward the limo hauling her dress in a garment bag and her shoes and other assorted paraphernalia in a small duffel bag. Once she got into the limo she heard Sir Bernard laugh and say,
“Oh you look wonderful.”
“Don’t test me,” She said with a dangerous tone in her voice and he stopped smiling. The rest of the ride back to the palace was completely silent.

When they arrived at the palace they were told that the princess and the rest of the people from Monaco would be coming momentarily.
“Oh no, and I’m dressed like this!” Skyler screamed as she ran up to her room to change. Luckily she did not have to fix her hair since it was still plastered in place from all the hairspray that was used earlier. So, she was able to get ready in a few minuets and arrived downstairs just in time.

Josh, Skyler, and Sir Bernard stood at the end of a red carpet that had been rolled out in the entry way of the palace; between them and the door stood the other palace employees waiting to welcome the princess. Just before she entered Josh whispered in Skyler’s ear,
“Now remember, be nice. She didn’t do anything to you.”
“I’m always nice.” Skyler responded through clenched teeth.
Then they saw François entering followed by a very tall, dark haired woman, who Skyler reluctantly acknowledged as very pretty.
When they had reached Skyler she gave a polite curtsy.
“Princess Brigitte Capón may I introduce you to Prince Joshua Whitfield, Dame Skyler Jones, and their advisor Sir Louis Bernard. This is Princess Brigitte Capón.” François said.
“Bonjour, it is very nice to greet you.” Brigitte said in with a French accent.
“My pleasure,” Josh said as he shook her hand. Then Skyler did the same. “Did you have a nice trip?”
“No, merci,” Brigitte smiled. Josh and Skyler looked confused until Francois said,
“You will have to excuse the princess, Your Highness, she does not speak much English. She is however fluent in French and Italian.”
“Uh huh . . .” Skyler began
“Well,” Josh said quickly. “Shall we go into my office?”
As they walked, Skyler whispered to Josh, “She does not speak English? But she is the princess of a European country.”
“Yes, that is odd, but we’ll have to make due.” Josh said. In Skyler’s opinion Josh did not seem to be phased by this whole situation and that was irritating her.
Once they all sat down Princess Brigitte began to speak in French very quickly. When she stopped, Josh and Skyler looked at François for a translation.
“Oh, her highness said that she is sorry to have disturbed your wedding and to have come on such short notice. She hopes that this whole misunderstanding can be resolved quickly.”
“Yeah, me to,” Skyler said quietly. Brigitte began to speak again,
“Vous averz un palais très agréable”
“What?” Josh asked.
“She said you have a very nice palace.” François said.
“Oh,” Josh said, “Would you like a tour?”
François repeated his question in French and Brigitte said,
“Oui, beaucoup”
“Great,” Josh said. “Follow me”
Josh led them all around the palace. Brigitte hung on his very word. Though she probably had no idea what he was saying until François translated it for her. Skyler was completely ignored by her. Skyler though this was a bit rude. She did not accompany them on their tour of the gardens. Instead she excused herself and headed inside. She had had quite enough of the princess for one day. So she went to her room.
From her window, she could see them walking around. She felt a wave a jealous anger go through her. Calm down, she told herself, he is only being polite. He has to be polite.
She decided to put the princess out of her mind and she sat on the couch and began to read a book. She must have lost track of the time though because when she put down her book and looked at the clock it said it was nearly five o’clock.
Skyler went downstairs and into Josh’s office where she found him sitting at his desk.
“Oh, hello Skyler” he said when she walked in.
“What are you doing?” She asked.
“Oh I’m just reading over this agreement that was made with the Royal family of Monaco.” Josh replied.
“Oh, that’s good.” Skyler said. “So maybe we can have this all over in a few days then?”
“Well, maybe,” Josh answered.
“What do you mean?”
“Well, this agreement, it seems pretty iron clad. I’ll have to have my lawyers look at it.”
“You will be able to get out of it right?” Skyler was concerned.
“Yes, of course, there is nothing to worry about dear. Now if you would be as kind as to go and inform the princess and her party that dinner will be served in the dining room at seven o’clock that would be lovely.”
“Sure, no problem.” Skyler said as she left the room.

Skyler knocked cautiously on the door to Princess Brigitte Capón’s suite in the palace.
“Entre,” she heard from within and she opened the door. Inside she found the princess and her royal advisors sitting around the living room area speaking in French.
“Ah, Dame Jones, Welcome!” Brigitte said.
“Um,” Skyler began. “I’m here to tell you that dinner will be served in the dinning room at seven.” She said and she turned to leave.
“Wait,” she heard Brigitte say. “Please don’t go yet. I wish to speak with you.”
“Okay,” Skyler said, though she was surprised because Princess Brigitte spoke very clear English though she still had her accent.
Brigitte said something in French and the other people in the room left, leaving Skyler and Brigitte alone.
“Come, sit, please!” Brigitte said pointing to the chair beside her. “We need to have a, what you call, a girl talk oui!”
“Your English is very good.” Skyler pointed out.
“Oh, thank you. I do try.” Brigitte said. After a few minutes of silence she said, “You know, your fiancé is a very wonderful man. You are ever so luck to have him.”
“Yes, I am”
“Well this whole thing is just such atrocious. I just want you to know that there are no hard feelings.”
“Yes of course,” Skyler said.
“Could I ask you a question?” Brigitte asked sweetly. Skyler nodded. “Is it true that you used to be a servant here at the palace?”
“Yes, it is.” Skyler replied.
“Really?” Brigitte seemed astounded. “I thought that was just a rumor.”
“No, no it’s true.” Skyler said as she stood up. “Well I had better be going. Please let me know if there is anything I can do for you, I want your brief stay here to be as nice as possible.” Skyler added.
“Oh, don’t worry,” Brigitte said as she walked Skyler to the door. “It will be.”
Skyler left Princess Brigitte’s suite with her suspicions confirmed. Brigitte was not to be trusted. She had something up her sleeve, Skyler could tell, but she did not know what. Skyler decided against telling Josh about her suspicious, at least not until it was clearer what exactly Brigitte was after.
That night at dinner, Brigitte chattered away in French as if she had never spoken an English word in her life. Skyler could not figure out why she did not want to speak English in front of Joshua, but she decided not to dwell on it.

Skyler had assumed that right away the next day they would all sit down and talk about their whole situation so it could be quickly resolved. She could not have been more incorrect.
The next week was spent almost entirely with Princess Brigitte. They toured around the country, went to cultural events, and had parties. Skyler was so mad about the whole thing she could hardly even speak to Josh anymore, not that she had any opportunity, though, since Princess Brigitte was monopolizing his time. In fact, the whole week Skyler had felt like the third wheel between Josh and Princess Brigitte. Everywhere they went she just tagged along.
By the time Friday came Skyler had enough. She went to talk to Josh but when she went into his office she found Brigitte.
“Hello,” Josh smiled at her but when he saw the look on her face his smile faded. “Is there something wrong?”
“Well yeah, actually,” Skyler said.
“What is it?” Josh asked but Skyler said nothing. Josh finally got the hint after a few seconds and he said to Brigitte, “Could you give us a moment please?”
“Oh, oui,” She said merrily as she skipped from the room.
“What’s up?” Josh asked.
“Well, frankly, it’s her.”
“Who? Bri?” Josh asked then quickly said, “I mean Princess Brigitte?”
“See that’s just it, Josh, she is always around.”
“Well she is a guest. I have to....” Skyler interrupted him,
“Yeah she is a guest and you have to be polite to her, I get that, but you’re going way about and beyond that here.”
“I’m sorry I didn’t realize how upset you were.” Josh said.
“Well I am. Do you realize in the past two days you have barely said two words to me?” Skyler said.
“Really?”
“Yeah,” Skyler said then she stood up quickly. “Oh I just figured something out. I knew she was up to something. This was it. How could I have been so blind?!”
“Honey,” Josh began. “You’re not making sense.”
“Princess Brigitte,” Skyler began. “Let me see . . . how much English has she spoken to you?”
“Um, not much, only the few words she knows. Why?”
“Ugh, that little . . .”
“Skyler,” Josh interrupted. “Explain please!”
“That first night she was here, we talked and I knew she was up to something.”
“What do you mean talked?” Josh asked.
“We had a conversation.” Skyler said.
“In English?” Josh asked.
“Yeah!” Skyler said. “That’s what first tipped me off because she spoke perfect English to me and I thought it was strange. Then she just seemed, so, overly nice. But this was her plan all along. Boy is she tricky.”
“I’m sorry I still don’t see her plan.” Josh said.
“To split us up of course.” Skyler proclaimed as she sat on the couch. “And it was working too.”
“Huh?” Josh looked befuddled.
“Well, by being all clingy and needy to you she slowly shoved me out of the picture. Then she knew I’d get mad and come in here and start pointing fingers then we’d have a fight, call off the wedding and she’d be free to move right in. Pretty clever plan.”
“Indeed.” Josh sighed as he sat next to Skyler. He looked very surprised. “Well at least you were able to see through her.”
“I know.” Skyler sighed laying her head on Josh’s shoulder.
They heard a knock at the door.
“Come in,” Josh said.
“Excuse me, Your Highness.” Sir Bernard said as he entered. “But, I have received work from your lawyers, and after reviewing the agreement, they wish to have a meeting with you, Miss Jones, and the people from Monaco.”
“Great, when?” Josh asked.
“This afternoon.” Sir Bernard said. “At one o’clock.”
“Did they say anything beside that they were coming?” Josh asked.
“If you mean, did they say if they found a way out? No.” Sir Bernard said. “Perhaps sir, you should consider the possibility of them not finding a way out.”
“What are you trying to say?” Josh inquired.
“Well, it’s just that you might have to accept the idea of marring the Princess of Monaco. It would be good for your international relations.”
“You cannot possibly be saying that.” Josh stammered.
“Yeah, I am standing right here.” Skyler said.
“I was just saying . . .” Sir Bernard said.
“Well, don’t,” Josh interrupted.

At one everyone piled into the conference room and sat around the big table. Two of Josh’s lawyers, Mr. Coldwell and Mr. Zion, were there.
“So, gentlemen, I understand you are here to share what you have found out about the agreement made with the Royal family of Monaco.”
“Indeed we do,” Mr. Zion began. “However before we begin I thought you would like to hear more about this agreement from the person who made it.
“And who might that be?” Josh asked Mr. Coldwell. Mr. Coldwell then went to the door opened it and ushered someone in. A man entered the room.
“Me,” said a voice from the past.

“You!” Skyler gasped as she stood up.
“What is he doing here?” Josh asked as he stood as well.
“He is the man who made this agreement.”
“Who is he?” Brigitte asked.
“I’m sorry my dear. My name is Duke Vladimir Peterson. I was Prince Joshua’s royal advisor before Sir Bernard and before I was fired.”
“You made this agreement?” Josh asked impatiently. Duke Peterson nodded his head.
“Well that figures.” Skyler said.
“Please Duke, tell them what you told us.” Mr. Zion said.
“Well,” Duke Peterson began. “I came to work here nearly twenty years ago, right after Prince Joshua’s parents died, leaving him in charge, but obviously a six year old cannot run a country. That is where I and the other advisors came in. Anyway, I had been working for about a year when the Royal family of Monaco came to me with the idea. They had a daughter around Prince Joshua’s age and wished to unite themselves with our country so that is when we decided on the agreement that they would marry when they came of age.”
“See there you have it.” Sir Bernard said. “They are to marry, plain and simple.”
“What is your problem?” Skyler asked him. “I mean I realize you don’t like me but, grow up and get over it.”
“Okay, calm down,” Josh said. “Sir Bernard I thought we discussed this.”
“Yeah, well,” Sir Bernard grumbled.
“Sir Bernard may I see you outside for a moment. Skyler, would you come too.” Josh said. When they were outside Josh continued, “You know, Sir Bernard, I am quite sick and tired of your negative attitude.”
“That’s too bad.” Sir Bernard began. “I wish you would just admit I’m right. You should have never gotten involved with that girl in the first place. I mean look at her she is a servant and so clearly beneath you.”
“Now look here!” Josh was livid. “Sir Bernard you are completely and totally out of line. Skyler is not a servant and I love her and nothing will ever change that. Now if you say one more derogative thing to her you will regret it. Do I make myself clear?”
“Yes, sir.” Sir Bernard stated and they returned to the meeting room.
Mr. Coldwell cleared his throat. “You see the legal documents drawn up did say they were to marry at the time they ‘come of age’.”
“What does that mean?” Josh asked.
“According to this, that would be when Prince Joshua turns twenty eight years of age.”
“But, I’m not twenty eight, well not yet. I still have two weeks.”
“Precisely, you see in reading over the contract we have discovered that if either one is married before age twenty eight the contract becomes null and void.” Mr. Zion said.
“Great,” Skyler said. “So all we have to do is get married in the next two weeks and that’s it.”
“Not quite.”
“Of course not,” Skyler said dejectedly.
“Well, what then?” Josh asked.
“We haven’t exactly figured it out yet.” Mr. Coldwell said.
“That’s just great, just great.” Skyler said as she stomped from the room. She ran outside and was half way down the steps to the garden when Josh caught up to her.
“Skyler, wait, what’s wrong?” He asked.
“I can’t take this anymore. I just can’t. It’s getting out of hand. I mean seriously, someone or something is like cosmically against our marriage, our relationship. We go from prison to court trials to psycho bitter lawyer kidnappers to hostage taking terrorists to this? Maybe we should just take the hint that fate is shoving at us and call it quits. I don’t know how much more I can take.” Skyler said as tears streamed down her face. She looked up at Josh, who had an equally hurt look on his face. Around the balcony stood the lawyers, Sir Bernard and Duke Peterson who seemed to have overly joyous looks on their faces.
Josh started down the steps toward her, “I know it’s been rough, but we’ll get through this. Have faith,” he said.
“I just don’t know anymore. Excuse me.” She said as she walked off into the garden.
Skyler spent the rest of the day out at the stables talking to and riding the horses. She felt bad for saying what she did. She did not entirely mean all of it. She was just so frustrated and angry that it all came out in one burst.

Around dinner time Skyler quietly went up to her room. She did not feel like eating with anyone. Instead she curled up in bed and watched television. She must have fallen asleep because when she woke up it was pitch black outside. She went to close the curtains and heard her stomach growl loudly so she decided to go to the kitchen for some food.
When she entered the kitchen, however, she found someone already there.
“Hello,” Josh said as he rummaged through the refrigerator. He pulled out a dish of cold chicken and said, “Want some?”
“Yes please,” Skyler answered as she went to get two plates out of the cabinet. They sat down at the small kitchen table. After a few minuets of silent eating, Skyler said,
“Look, I’m sorry about today I just got so....”
“I completely understand. I mean I feel the same way sometimes.”
“You do?”
“Well yeah. That’s what I was thinking when I was being held hostage.”
“Really?” Skyler felt relieved that she wasn’t the only one that felt that way.
“So, I fired Sir Bernard.” Josh said in between bites of his chicken leg.
“You’re kidding?”
“Nope. After you left he came into my office saying how you were right and you had probably gone for good and that I should take this opportunity to marry Princess Brigitte before it’s too late and you change your mind. So I fired him. He had just gone too far, for the third time today.” Josh said.
Skyler laughed. After they had finished they went to their rooms and went to sleep.

The next morning Josh came into Skyler’s room very early.
“Get up.” He said.
“No,” She complained sleepily. “I’m tired.”
“Come on get up.” He said. She looked at him strangely.
“Why aren’t you dressed?” Skyler asked.
“Well, I didn’t have time yet to take of my pajamas. I wanted to come wake you up.”
“Why?”
“The lawyers have found a way out of the contract they think.”
“Ok that’s good. You go and change and come back and get me.” Skyler said as she flopped back down on the bed.
“No, no get up and meet me down stairs.” Josh said as he dragged her out of bed.
“Ok, fine.” Skyler said as she shuffled toward the bathroom.

A little while later, Skyler net Josh downstairs and they walked into the conference room together. There they found the Princess and Josh’s lawyers already waiting. Mr. Zion began to speak as soon as they were seated.
“We have discovered that in order for Prince Joshua and Dame Skyler to be married there must be a signed document by Prince Joshua and Princess Brigitte acknowledging the voiding of the contract.”
“That’s good.” Josh said.
“No, it is not!” Brigitte protested.
“Why?” Skyler asked.
“I will not sign.” Brigitte said.
“Why?” Everyone said in unison.
“Because I want to be married to the prince. I do not wish to spend my life in Monaco. It is so small!”
“Okay, now what?” Josh asked impatiently.
“Well we anticipated this, so we brought in an expert.” Mr. Coldwell said. He then ushered to an older man wearing a top hat who was sitting in the corner.
“Hello,” he said. “I am Mr. Wells, a historian.”
“How is he going to help?” Skyler asked.
“Actually, he helped us see a clever solution for this problem.” Mr. Zion said.
“You see there is an old law that if two women are vying for the affections of the prince the woman with a higher ranking wins.” Mr. Wells paused as Princess Brigitte gave a small laugh. “Only if they are both from this country.” He continued, which made Skyler give a small laugh. “If they are not.....”
“Hold on,” Josh interrupted. “I don’t want this whole thing to be resolved like this. It is like they are going to fight over me. That is ridiculous.”
“Unfortunately, the law says they are to duel, although that law was written a very long time ago.” Mr. Wells paused. “Wait a second.” He said as he rummaged through a bag on the floor. He then pulled out a book and began to leaf through it.
“Oh I’m sorry, I am mistaken. The duel is only for two men fighting over a princess.” Mr. Wells said.
“That makes more sense.” Skyler mumbled.
“Well what about two women fighting over a prince?” Josh asked.
“I don’t know,” Mr. Wells said. “The page is missing.”
The whole room let out a loud groan.
“Why won’t you just sign the paper?” Skyler said to Brigitte.
“Because,” Brigitte said stubbornly. “I don’t want to.”
“So basically, we are back where we started.” Josh said.
“Oh wait, I have found the missing page, it was shoved in the back of the book.” Mr. Wells laughed.
“And?” Skyler demanded.
Mr. Wells looked discouraged. He said, “There is no law for that.”
Everyone sat quietly in utter frustration for a few minuets, until finally Josh said,
“I have an idea. Mr. Wells may I borrow that book? Thanks. I’ll be back later.” After saying good bye to Skyler he left.
“What was that about?” Brigitte asked.
“No idea.” Skyler said.

Josh was gone for almost two days but the second he returned he called for an emergency meeting.
“Where have you been?” Skyler asked him.
“Getting this,” Josh said as he held up a piece of paper. He unfolded it and showed it to his lawyers.
“That should take care of everything.” He said.
“Indeed it does,” Mr. Coldwell said.
“What is it?” Brigitte asked impatiently.
“It says: In accordance with Law 3345: The Marriage of Royals, the Prince or Princess shall be allowed to marry the person of their choosing. This law will supercede all previous ones of this matter.” Mr. Zion read.
“It is signed by Prince Joshua, all the members of his board and all local division officials.” Mr. Coldwell said.
“I’m sorry Princess Brigitte; I suppose you are out of luck.”
“But he may still pick me!” She pouted.
“Oh, get a clue!” Skyler screamed at her. Princess Brigitte then ran from the room screaming in French at her assistants who were chasing after her; a sight that made Skyler and Josh laugh.

Skyler and Josh’s wedding was rescheduled for four days later, exactly two weeks after the original date. This time however, the ceremony went off without a hitch. After the ceremony Queen Skyler and King Joshua Whitfield got into their horse drawn carriage that would take them to their honeymoon. As they rode off toward their new life together they were happy because they knew that their love was truly meant to be.

...and they lived happily ever after...
