Review: Skyline - Avoid like plague (spoilers)

It's been a while since I've posted a few words (been busy trying to raise money for the starship thingy), but I've been so inspired by that exceptional movie "Skyline" I thought I'd share them with you, by way of a WARNING!

On Independence Day, a War Of The Worlds erupts in the little Californian suburb near Cloverfield, where an Invasion Of The Body Snatchers sends everyone into a Matrix of frenzied hysteria at this unexpected Event.

Or to put it another way, if you're stuck for a good idea, and you have enough reputation to trick Hollywood into putting money behind anything, then just watch a load of old movies, take all their plotlines, stir in a liquidiser and pour this stinking goop down on paper.

With unsympathetic characters running around like headless chickens, before they all (except the pregnant girl) get their heads snapped off by the aliens, leading to the exciting ending (the excitement is that you did survive to the end without running screaming from the cinema), with the clear suggestion they hope to write a whole series of this nonsense, you'll find plenty to laugh at, if you can be bothered wasting your life on this.

Avoid like the plague and hope no one makes the sequel that's hinted at the end ("hero" gets turned into alien monster to protect his girlie).

Verdict: Idiot turkeys eaten by aliens at Christmas.

There, vented.

Thanks for the warning, I was kinda interested but I had not done much looking into what it was about. There is so little QUALITY SciFi these days.

Well I'm doing the best I can to raise money for my own productions, including a lot of SF, give me chance and I'll get there.

:)

So... I take it I should wait for Netflix on this one?

Re: Review: Skyline - Avoid like plague (spoilers)

I'm trying to scroll down past the unhidden spoilers and listening to the comments, that last one is pretty damning of the film. I saw a massive poster of the film outside a cinema in London, where the red carpet stuff is held, looks like they picked a lame duck then?

Skyline is likely to be the worst piece of felgercarb I've seen for a long time. Just when I thought that was over, it gets worse. Image is just a bad version of Independence Day, but not after the exciting people who will save the planet, you sit in a room the most hated man on earth.

Skyline had potential but the supporting story was lame. I liked the idea behind the invasion force but the humanity aspect was lost in shallow characters. I watched it thinking it was going to be a lot better than what it actually was. It left me feeling cheated.

I agree with Skwirl, there was so much missing from the characters. The only time I saw any 'real' human behavioural acting was in the car park with the married couple the main characters came across.

The only redeeming feature was the difficult to understand ending which at least could provoke discussion. Still, there was some really poor scenes in this movie that made it a chore to watch rather than a thrill.

I am finding many of the newer movies wanting lately. Perhaps HollyRock is trying to change the model and we are in the throws of the change. What I would love to see is some fantastic science fiction stories done true to the author's vision. Its all doable with today's movie technology. It just seems Hollyrock needs to be defragmented and needs a serious spyware scan.
I'm going to rewatch Skyline again soon. Perhaps a second viewing will make it better somehow?

Are there any recent examples that do stand out as a good sci-fi movie?

I had to read that again as I read "recent" as "older" for some reason.

Anyhow, going back 6 years I find these which I think are good enough to warrant my praise :)

2004 Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
2004 The Incredibles
2005 Serenity
2005 V For Vendetta
2006 A Scanner Darkly
2009 Moon
2009 District 9

Ok, The alien concept and execution was good. It was the actors that left much to be desired.
I also have an issue with the response time of the military, the reason and compatibility of the invasion and the poop in the pool.

These reviewers said it best
To end it all, the characters are just not engaging, with no personality to cling on to, nor are they worthy of our empathy, which makes the moments in between the action quite boring.
An open ended conclusion screams sequel, yet Skyline and The Brothers Strause do not deserve one, nor should we be made to relive this most uninspiring of science fiction.

The theater was fairly full on the Saturday night I went to see it. At least two couples walked out in the middle. As we were leaving, I heard more than one person saying they couldn't believe they shelled out $10.50 for this.

Finally got around to watching Skyline and... I totally understand the comments now in this thread!

It started off decent enough with an interesting premise (attracting humans like moths to a flame), and the alien craft being organic creatures was a good switch up, but it turned out to be nothing more than an "aliens want to eat our brains!" story line?! What the heck?!

And somebody else mentioned it already about the married couple in the parking garage; they were the only characters that were actually interesting. From the wife you kind of get the feeling that they couple was hiding something and keep waiting for the reveal but the story writers wasted (literally) the characters. Oh, let's not forget the growth in the main characters stomach region after he saw the lights because apparently the writers forgot about it.

The whole thing was just a horrible mess with various bits of ideas borrowed from other movies with characters that nobody really cared about and story lines with big holes in it.

Bah!
