social Networking Sci Fi

facebook, myspace, rolepages, twitter

the internet is the future of imagination

it allows us to collaborate on stories, to create new concepts in multiple dimensions, to work with others as we form concepts in our heads, and to get both feedback and to gain new ideas from other creative individuals, because the technology is inherently interactive

of course these websites are usually used to tell the stories of real people, in real lives...

but, what about fake people? what about characters in stories? Can the book you are writing come alive before you've even written it?

i would love to discuss this much more with all of you

second life and world of warcraft are actually limiting because you are stuck in an avatar. You can only do what the programmers have already thought up. You cant stand on one foot while trying to fly like a chicken and sing yankee doodle dandy while juggling a pie.

Not that you would want to do that necessarily... but having the option opens up an infinite number of possibilities.

Thats one of the reasons a lot more people connect on myspace and facebook than in second life.

There's a lot being written about internet usage in the area of presentation of self. Anonymous personalities put over to others via the internet can be better prepared and carried out. Unlike face to face conversation you have some time to prepare a response or statement for your 'character'.

There was a quote in the latest Numb3rs episode (se06e04) from a writer who implied real people don't behave as a writers characters do. Many quotes could be brought in here, like the military one about what happens after a battle commences. All relating to human interaction in immediacy situations.

I wonder if an interesting investigation ought to be into those people who put their characters online as they are in real life, faults and all. Only ceding to the fact that the preparation time means they have the chance to iron over some of the natural faults immediacy in face to face interactions would display.

Roleplaying as a teenager (or even adult) could be about experimenting, trying on the clothes of a fully formed character that is expected to be worn as an adult. But as we know, there are very few people who are able to be that image in real life. Sure, some people have intelligence, charisma, social and conversational skills that they almost appear to be faultless, but the rest of us...............

I would say that all basic social networking sites are a form of roleplay in which people do present the best version of themselves that they possibly can.

The idea of engaging in a social networking site as a character is the next step, where you are not only the very best version of yourself that you can be, instead you are actually a better version of yourself, or at least an impossible version of yourself. In the one case your a hero of a story, or some sort of super powered being. In the other you create characters to act out your own impulses or hidden desires, or as catharsis for those things which you are unable to do in real life.

But the initial experiment is already being conducted. Just friend some people that you know in real life on a social network, and see the disconnect between the face they put online, and the face you see when you actually look at them.

Hi Friends.
Second Life is a game in which player lives another life in new avatar with different gestures like smile. While in social networking website people play their personality well and try to communicate with the world. They also use different applications of site to represent themselves.

I accept with information: The idea of engaging in a social networking site as a character is the next step, where you are not only the very best version of yourself that you can be, instead you are actually a better version of yourself, or at least an impossible version of yourself.
