Somewhere I Belong.
Sydney smiled and leaned back slightly as she basked in the late afternoon sunshine.
It had been two days after her awful nightmare and three days since Jennifer had 'as Urma had so myteriously predicted', slipped into a coma.
It was hard. . And Sometimes Sydney wished she could block out the terrible memories of that night.
"Something on you mind?" Micheal asked seeming concerned as he sat down on the blanket next to her.
They had decided to come to the beach, Mainly because Micheal had insisted that Sydney desperately needed some time to relax.
Now as Sydney looked up into Micheal's concerned face, she couldnt help but wonder why he was being so kind to her.
Did he like her romantically?
Much as she wanted to dare to dream that was the reason, in her heart she knew that his desire to become a part of the clergyship would never allow for that.
Without realising it, Sydney's face grew gloomy as she pondered this.
"Hey Syd? Whats up? Youre not answering my question. . .
Earth to Sydney. . " he had leaned down and was staring at her his head resting on the sand.
Sydney smiled faintly at his joke.
"So hows it going with the whole priest thing?" she asked hoping her voice wouldnt betray her true feelings.
He seemed to almost freeze at that question, his handsome face going blank.
Then he sighed heavily as he looked out onto the choppy waves of the ocean.
"I dont know Syd." he said honestly.
"I've been talking to Father Dowling recently and we were discussing. . .Or rather he was giving me a lecture on how important the rule of becomimg Priest is." Micheal shifted almost subconsciously and drew himself closer to Sydney.
"Its not just some fanciful hobby. . Its very serious.
And i dont know. . .Dont know if im ready to take that responsibilty . . ." Micheal admitted as he turned his head to the side so that he could look into her eyes.
She stared back at him, trying to swallow the inexplicable lump in her throat.
Her lovely warm brown eyes were deep and searching as she began.
"Micheal. . .I cant really ever help you with that decision.
All i can say. . .Is that you need to search your soul. . .
Listen to your heart. . .And it will give you the right answer."
Micheal felt a unfamilar wave of emotions course through his veins as he listened to her soothing voice.
What he was so afraid of telling her. . .
Was that she was the reason he began to doubt his diligence to the faith.
He was still a firm believer. . .
For all his life he had never met another girl who had made him ever doubt his desire to be a man of God.
Sydney was the first. .And he was sure the Only Girl who had ever made him feel something that could only be described. . .As love.
He would definately listen to his heart.
But he already knew what answers it would give him.
He just needed to look into her beautiful soulful eyes. . .
To see what he hoped was his wonderful future
She was his answer.
He felt a gentle tug on his arm and he glanced down at her.
Sydney was smiling at him a mischievious twinkle in her eye.
Micheal smiled inwardly wondering what she was going to say.
That was the thing about Sydney.
She was like a box full of surprises.
She could always keep him guessing.
She dragged her fingers through the damp sand and Micheal watched amused as he realised she was drawing heart patterns.
"What about a little bet Micheal. . ." she asked drawing out his name almost teasingly.
"What sort of bet?" Micheal asked inwardly excited but on the outside wary.
"First one to the water. . .Gets a kiss!" she suddenly screamed out as she ran giggling to the water.
He frowned and quickly got up chasing behind her.
"Hey! No fair! You cheated!" he said with mock anger as he finally caught up to her.
He reached down waving his arms in the warm sea water.
Waiting for her back to be turned. . So that he could splash her.
"Arrg! Hey! What do you think youre doing!" she yelled out immediately stooping to gather water in her own hands.
Laughing, Micheal jumped away expertly avoiding her splash.
"Just face it Syd. Youre not a natural trickster." Micheal deadpanned enjoying the angry look on her soaking wet face.
She had stopped however now to glance out into the ocean where the sun was setting, causing the sea to turn a lovely brown like liquid gold.
"Take a look at that. . .Dont you think its beautiful?" Sydney asked dreamily.
Micheal turned and stared at it.
"Yeah. . .It. . ." he began but much to his horror felt his mouth fill with saltly sea water.
she had used this distraction to splash him with water.
Furious he turned back to her but she was already running away laughing at the top of her lungs.
"Not a trickster huh?" she teased as she ran.
Micheal watched her a small fond smile on his lips.
If he had any doubt about his future. .
He knew it had just been aswered now.
"Dont forget you owe me a kiss!" she yelled out as she toweled her dripping hair.
He joined her and stood there for a moment awed by how beautiful she looked with the setting sun casting a halo on her face.
"Do really think i could forget something like that?" he asked as he leaned down and gently captured her soft lips in a kiss.
