Sci-Fi Star Trek (2009) {JJ Abrams reboot}

I've seen the new Star Trek Trailers! It looks good. I'm excited about the possibilities.

James T. Kirk will be played by Chris Pine.
Mr. Spock will be played by Zachary Quinto, 'Syler' from 'Heroes'.

I was surprised to see a starship (probably the USS Enterprise) was being built on Earth rather that in a space dock.

Sex in J.J. Abrams’ ‘Star Trek’? Chris Pine, Rachel Nichols, Zoe Saldana Engage Full-Speed Ahead

Submitted by HollywoodChicago.com on November 21, 2008 - 1:36am.

CHICAGO – While “sex” and “Star Trek” typically aren’t found together in the same sentence, we learned this week from the official trailer for the new J.J. Abrams film that he’s clearly acquainting one with the other. But there’s more.

Chris Pine, who stars as the new (young) Captain Kirk, went so far as to tell Marc Malkin of E! Online that all the buzz about a particular striptease in the new “Star Trek” film from actress Zoe Saldana will live up to the hype.

“It’ll become famous,” Pine told Malkin about the Zoe Saldana scene. “[The film is] trying to be sexed up for a new generation that really isn’t used to seeing ‘Star Trek’. It’s a whole new beast.”

As for who Pine himself is pining for in the film, we briefly saw in the trailer released this week that the woman he climbed in bed with while wearing his best drawers was in fact actress Rachel Nichols, according to Malkin. It’s one of the film’s two love scenes.

While Pine wouldn’t say Nichols is tough to look at, he said (at least to Malkin) that even that kind of work is still very much work nonetheless.

“It was a lot of fun, but I think that day actually was a 20-hour day,” Pine told Malkin. “By the end, the novelty wears off. After many sandwiches and meals through the day, all you want to do is brush your teeth and go home.”

“Star Trek,” which is slated to release on May 9, 2008, stars Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Eric Bana as Nero, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Winona Ryder as Amanda Grayson, Zoe Saldana as Nyota Uhura, Karl Urban as Leonard “Bones” McCoy and John Cho as Hikaru Sulu.

“Star Trek” also stars Bruce Greenwood as Christopher Pike, Ben Cross as Sarek, Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov, Leonard Nimoy as the old Spock, Greg Ellis as chief engineer Olsen and Chris Hemsworth as George Kirk.

A sex scene with Rachel? I can live with that! :D

J.J. Abrams, director of Star Trek, told reporters on Saturday that the movie re-introduces the original series characters, played by a new cast of actors, in a way that will seem fresh yet familiar to fans.

i grew up with the original series and have watched each one till i literally memorized each episode. when the full feature movies came out back in the late 70's and 80's i accepted them because they had and 'much older' yet same cast.

each subsequent tv series that came out never bothered me as it was a new set of characters even though TNG had a updated enterprise yet it was set 80 years further in the future of the original series.

still when i first heard of this movie being made i was initially taken aback as i thought "ok, they are trying to created a new TOS with actors who will never be kirk, spock, etc, etc. as i read more and watched more trailers i have begun to appreciate the scope of what they have done to 'not' ruin the actors/characters from the original series.

now i am eagerly waiting for the movie to come out. 2 months is taking so long to get here.

No doubt, it looks gorgeous. It looks exciting. But the whole Enterprise-on-the-ground thing makes me want to weep. (Of course, they may beam it into orbit - which might be farfetched but, then, so is a lot of what happens in Star Trek.)

I agree with GavalinB.

The Enterprise design does not lend itself to planetary landing capability. The amount of energy required to beam it would be ridiculous. Why do writers and movie makers have to take such liberties. The Trek universe is well established why mess with it.

Robert April and Christopher Pike were the Captains of the Enterprise before Kirk...she was quite a mature ship before he took over as captain..and yes there may well have been refits and rebuilds but not a new ship being built, as seems to be the case in the trailers...and on the ground :(

The movie looks great but style over substance is something I find very frustrating.

This smells like Enterprise, which took huge liberties with Trek history...that could have been a great show but despite some good stories ended up a mess...hence it got canceled.

I reserve final judgment until I see it..

No way I will give them 1 cent by seeing this movie in the theater, buying it on DVD, or watching it on PPV... what's the point of having a Trek universe if they decide to just change it all up to make another movie... I hope this movie flops.

So is it safe to assume you were not a fan of the "re-imagined" Battlestar Galactica either?

Will this constitute the eleventh movie?

And will it fall under the Law Of Star Trek Movies - "the odd numbered ones are always !*!?**"

it was easier for me to accept new star trek movies and series than it was to see a new BSG. even all the stargate shows that are on dont catch my liking as the original stargate movie did and i really do think they should have made a sequel to stargate like the second novel.

Star Trek [Review]

Star Trek will disappoint no one.

As the lights dimmed and the familiar Star Trek Federation logo slid on screen, the emotion of all those hours of watching Next Generation reruns as a kid came sloshing back into my brain, dripping out of my eyes as tears of pure happiness. I expect that it was essentially the same emotion Star Wars fans felt during the opening credits of Episode 1, but without the massive letdown afterwards. (Ha ha, suckers.)

But yes, to answer your question, there's Kirk, there's Spock, and there's everyone you expect (even Pike!). Not all of the same mannerisms are there, but if you wanted to see the old actors you'd go watch the first six movies again. This implies that Kirk doesn't do a two-hour Shatner impression, which is, of course, good news. Instead, he plays Kirk as a intelligent, brash, but friendly youngster that has confidence oozing out of every torpedo tube. And the new Spock is more Sylar than Spock, to be honest; though the rest of the casting is essentially spot on.

So long as you go into the movie expecting a "Star Trek" movie, in that there's space and aliens and action and shooting and torpedoes and pew pew pew, you'll come out happy. The movie is targeted enough toward the mainstream in that someone with zero Trek experience would enjoy it. Director J.J. Abrams also gives enough shout outs to old time staples that trekkers will be giddy at the slight nods and fanservice that say, in essence, "thank you for supporting us all these years, now here's something you asked for."

Think of it like Casino Royale was to the James Bond franchise: fewer gadgets, more action and an incredibly pugilistic lead. And lens flares. Lots, and lots, and lots of lens flares.

Kirk's Enterprise has never looked better. These guys took the original ship, combined it with some designs of the Enterprise-B, then mashed it up with Picard's Enterprise-E and then added a dash of '60s non-Trek Sci Fi. The set design, however, is almost all touchscreen (like TNG), but with a tremendously updated UI. I'd hate to call it Apple-y, but there's lots of glass and slick white finishes. Retro this is not—you'll barely be able to equate the bridge to the original's, other than the fact that the players are all sitting in the right places. Why Bones canoodles in the bridge so much instead of where he's supposed to be is still beyond me.

And the plot? The plot makes as much sense as any other Star Trek movie. There's even a very good explanation of why this movie is the way it is, which is the most I can say about that.

This is what Star Trek needs right now. After writing on Next Generation, Ron Moore went on (about a decade later) to reimagine Battlestar Galactica, a relatively realistic show (topic-wise) that just happened to be set in space. Sci Fi fans have moved on from the utopian, and what many accused as sterile, confines of TNG to a grittier, less kempt future.

That's not to say Star Trek is now gritty—it's just more...modern. And more sexy. Like when you upgrade from a six piece KFC meal to a 12 piece bucket: you're going to get more breast and thigh.

It also doesn't have any felgercarb about the Prime Directive or any undertones about race that TOS and TNG dealt with, but it is a very good "restart" of the franchise. With this film as the base, I cannot wait to see where the franchise goes from here.

Bonus: there's a four-issue Star Trek: Countdown comic series that prequels the movie. Though, you might want to wait until after you watch to read, since it gives away a few plot points. To tell you more would be to spoil too much. It's too much even to tell you what KIND of fans would like the comic. You can download the first one here for your iPhone.

I am so pumped to go see the Star Trek movie tomorrow (the 7th) at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. It's an IMAX showing, and something about that, combined with seeing this movie at a space center, has got me pumped. Anyone in the area should definitely try to check it out!

Joe, welcome to Cool Sci-Fi! (y)

That sounds like a way cool event and is something that I would have definitely gone to if I was in the area. Alas, though, I'm up in the Philly area so it is a bit out of the way.

Any items planned to go along with the movie?

Nothing special like that available in the UK unfortunately.

The only choice I have is whether to go during the quiet hours during the day to watch it so my concentration is taken by what's on the screen rather than the zoo around me  I remember going to see the first movie at the cinema and falling asleep halfway through. Luckily I don't tend to do that at this stage in my life!

Did anyone see this movie yet???

There are a lot of alias references if you look closely, I probably missed many of them. Apparently Gerg Grunberg is in the movie, but I totally missed him.

Anyway, one thing to look out for is the sign of the dock yard while they are still on earth - it says Section 47!!!!!
Also, I am pretty sure Lazarey is one of the Vulcan elders. Did anyone else catch alias references?

I haven't seen it yet.

Vulcan Elder #2 is played by Mark Bramhall, who played Sark's father, Andrian Lazarey.

So what about the rumours that Jennifer Garner and Victor Garber were willing to do cameos? I assume that you would have noticed them.

The Internet Movie Data Base says that Greg Grunberg's voice was heard as
the Step-father.

Tell us about Rachel Nichols (Alias Agent Rachel Gibson). She played the Orion woman. Her part was supposed to by sexy. How long was she on screen?

alrighty now. who has seen the new star trek movie since it has been out for a day or two. personally have not seen it yet and will anxiously await a dvd release.

but give your thoughts on it if you have seen it.
