The other co-creator, Alex Kurtzman (who was a writer on both J.J. Abrams-directed Trek films), remains on board as a producer, along with The Wrath of Khan director Nicholas Meyer, while Trek newcomers Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts are running the show. Discovery is set about a decade before events in the original series (and will share at least one character—Spock's father Sarek, here played by James Frain), though the main focus will be the ship's first officer (The Walking Dead's Sonequa Martin-Green) rather than its captain (Jason Isaacs). The cast also includes Maulik Pancholy, Michelle Yeoh, Doug Jones, Rekha Sharma, Rainn Wilson, and Mary Wiseman. After tonight, the series will be exclusive to the CBS All Access streaming service, with seven additional new episodes (including a second new episode tonight) arriving weekly this fall, with the second half of the season launching in January. A Talking Trek aftershow also streams on All Access after each episode. Serek is full vulcan. Spock is Human-Vulcan. There is a reason why Roddenberry included a half human half vulcan in the show.  It was to show inner turmoil. Are they going to rewrite what makes Vulcans unique and interesting? We have seen other full vulcan crewmembers in series. Serek commanded reverence because of who his son was. Off screen he was a member of the Vulcan High Council and an ambassador. I just can't see where including Serek on the Discovery  would be interesting?Plus, a show about the first officer? Ships are always about their captains. Captains have the final say in everything, its their ship. Perhaps we will get a series dedicated to the recycling chief next? Just think of the possibilities, we could get a series focused on every individual crew member. Since there is a limit to the known species during TOS, Discovery is limited to the races that are already in Kirk's Enterprise database. Many of those races were first encounters so Discovery could not know of their existence.Discovery is limited to the species in Archer's Enterprise or new discoveries. Any new discoveries that Discovery makes should be reflected in Kirk's Enterprise database.This is where Star Trek Enterprise show was broken. The Xindi (a major event) is never mentioned in any of the other series...While a 'new' and exciting race, the fact that there is no mention of them in the 'future' Star Trek series is a big no-no. Lazy writing.So, since Discovery happens after Enterprise and before TOS there has to be something in this new series about the complete destruction and disappearance of the Xindi.Plus, any new species/civilizations found by Discovery needs reference in all the other "Later" Star Trek series. The writers need to do research.Then there is the technology timeline. Technology that has been established in Enterprise but nothing developed in TOS. Plus, Enterprise is busted because of Riker implying the show was a holodeck program.By some accounts, nothing in Enterprise can be cannon. Even if Discovery holds to the holodeck Enterprise it still has to contend with TOS and ALL other shows that holds cannon. This has to be done to the extent that nothing in Enterprise is known because Enterprise was a holodeck program that was playing in the future while Riker was there to run the program.Again, lazy writing.The only series that can be written to have any merit is one that takes place AFTER Voyager or in the New Movie timeline. For a competent writer, with an imagination, that wouldn't be too hard given the large pool of Star Trek Universe cannon to pull from.Seems like writers think prequels are easy money because audiences, wanting something like what they have seen, will pay to see anything. Alien, X-Men, Star Wars and on and on. Prequel after prequel that ruin the original stories and we support this nonsense with our money.</blockquote>
