Del Ray Manga has acquired the comic and graphic novel rights to Stephen King and Peter Straub’s 1984 horror title, “The Talisman.” While the creative team who will be producing the monthly comic has not been announced yet, the series is set to hit shelves in late summer/early fall of 2009.

“The Talisman” follows Jack Sawyer, a teenager who must retrieve a magical Talisman in order to save his dying mother’s life. However, in order to obtain the magical relic, he must travel back and forth between the real world and a horrifying landscape known as the “twinner.” The original hardcover publication of the book spent an astounding 12 weeks at #1 on the New York Times best seller list, and a television series based on the property is in the works with Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy attached.

“Illustrating The Talisman in the depth that it deserves will involve at least 24 issues of comics, probably more,” said Del Rey Editor in Chief, Betsy Mitchell in the official press release. “It’s a tremendously visual story, filled with images that burn in memory long after the book has been closed.”

As many fans are aware, Del Ray isn’t the only publisher adapting King’s works for comics, as Marvel’s “Dark Tower” series continues to be one of the best selling monthly titles for the publisher. Furthermore, “Dark Tower: Long Road Home” was the top-selling comic book in North America in March 2008.

Have you been keeping up with the Stephen King comic book adaptations? What other King stories would you like to see get the four-color treatment? Discuss in the comments.
