Masquerading as a "black-ops" division of the CIA, it has lied to its lower level agents, since its formation over ten years ago...Our heroine, Sydney Bristow, is one of those -- formerly deceived -- agents. As one of twelve branches of the Alliance -- a private association of international organized crime -- SD-6 trades in industrial intelligence, weapons, medical technology, military secrets and computer advancements...all in exchange for profit. "SD" is Alain Christophe's term: "Section Disparu" -- "the section that doesn't exist." Internally, SD-6 declares its mission as: "The retrieval and study of intelligence, both military and industrial, throughout the world, that is critical to the survival of the United States of America." Externally, SD-6 has a dangerous, but silent, presence.

Sydney Bristow - Sydney is a double agent -- a spy working for SD-6, and an intelligence officer with the CIA, working to bring down SD-6. Initially, her involvement with SD-6 was desk work, advancing later to reconnaissance missions, dead drops, brush passes and other field work. Her father, Jack Bristow, is also tied to both agencies; an agent of long standing with the CIA, and a Senior Officer at SD-6. Most critical to their safety, SD-6 must never learn of their connection to the CIA... or they could find themselves "terminated." Sydney came to work with the CIA through her involvement with the SD-6 cell in Los Angeles, which she was recruited to while she was still a freshman studying Literature at college. Michael Vaughn was assigned as her handler; it is also clear that he has great feeling for her...
