I remember reading how JK Rowling was advised to make the lead character of her books a boy to gain a wider audience.

I'm sure she is glad at the way things turned out but I wonder if things would have been different if the lead had been Hermione Potter and Harry Grainger was a support character???

i dont think having women as a lead would attract more women to liking sci fi.

The whole point of sci fi is that its total escapism, and therefore doesnt need to appeal to any sense of political correctness, it transcends the norms of the world.
