Synopsis

At 2:00 PM
, a news reporter tells everyone to scramble, but is not sure what is happening. People begin to run and scream, and just before a brilliant white light washes out the entire scene someone in the crowd yells out, "What is THAT?"

23 minutes earlier, at Gate 211 of Miami International Airport, a stewardess makes introductions and gives instructions to prepare for Avias Airways Flight 514 to São Paulo to take off. A steward opens a restroom door, and tells a man, Sean Walker, he needs to be in his seat. He agrees to do so, saying he was just not feeling well. Sean leaves the door open, showing an open bag in the drawer compartment of the plane. Arriving in his seat, he looks out the window while taking a window seat on the right side of the plane. Sean sees men running down the airport concourse, towards where the the plane was docked; however, the plane has already undocked and is now speeding down the runway. Then he spots another person driving a black SUV down the runway outside the fence.

Eleven days earlier, at the Buchanans' home, Samantha Buchanan is bouncing a ball while her older sister, Leila and mother pack clothes and talk about Leila's upcoming cruise. Samantha asks to go, but Leila says she cannot this time but maybe next time it would be possible.

Later, that same day, Sean enters the home with Leila's father and some luggage. He gives Leila's father the main number for the ship and notes their cell phones should also work while on board. He also asks and receives blessing to marry Mr. Buchanan's daughter, Leila. Mr. Buchanan notes that he will have to kill Sean if he hurts Leila in any way, and Sean says he understands. Later, Sean and Leila say their goodbyes to the family near a car and drive off.

Back in the present, Sean relaxes as the plane takes off, then makes his way to the front of the plane and pulls out a gun.

A few minutes earlier, Simon Lee, the man in the black SUV, calls Frank Decosta, the man currently in charge of the airport control tower. While weaving through traffic towards the airport, he tells Frank that there is a terrorist on board Flight 514 and to not let it take off or many people will die. When Frank doesn't respond, Simon tells Frank that there is a bomb on board the plane.

Thirteen months earlier, near Mount Inostranka, Alaska, Simon is in a military facility's conference room telling a woman, Sophia, that he tracked down someone two days ago in Los Angeles, and the man is not thrilled about being back. Simon tells the woman that the man is going to tell them about the event, and she tells Simon that he has to change his mind—to do whatever it takes. Simon asks if they should at least warn them, that they can prepare; and that they call to ask for help from newly installed President Martinez. The woman says that the President cannot help because Whitman and the others would not let him find out about this place. Simon says he would make sure the President found out. The woman says that Simon is her only conduit to the outside, and if their people out there are having doubts, she needs him to reason with them so they can protect themselves. Simon then instructs a military guard to take the woman, who is handcuffed to her chair, back to her quarters.

Back to a few minutes prior to present time, Frank has a controller radio Avias 514 to re-route to the emergency bomb area, but no one responds and the plane's transponder turns off. Simon says, "Then we've lost them." and hangs up his cell phone. The airport tower computers then reboot, shutting down the system. Reaching the airport, Simon drives his SUV through the fence and pulls up along side the plane, but the plane outruns him and takes off. Simon brakes at the end of the runway and takes a call, answering a man that he could not stop him.

In the present, Sean bangs on the pilot's door, which is locked shut, and yells that the person inside does not have to do this. He asks the stewardess if she can open the door, and instructs other passengers to stay back at gunpoint. When the stewardess says she cannot open the door, he tries the phone and continues banging on the door, but the pilot does not answer. An air marshal then sneaks up on Sean with his own gun, forcing Sean to drop his weapon.

Eight days earlier, Sean and Leila leave their cruise ship and head to the beach in Saint Lucia. At the beach, Sean takes a peek at and then hides a ring, when Leila returns from a swim. Sean tells her it is almost 1PM, so they could get some lunch and then go for a hike. While hiking, Sean begins talking about when he first met Leila five years ago, when they are interrupted by yells for help from a cliff near the water. As Sean and Leila arrive, a man, Greg, says that his girlfriend, Vicky, is hurt in the water, that he thinks she hit her head falling off. He cannot jump in after her cause his hand is in a cast. Then, Sean decides to risk his own life and dives off into the water after Vicky, ignoring his own girlfriend's protests. He is able to reach Vicky and bring her ashore.

Later, Vicky and Greg meet up with Leila and Sean on the beach for drinks. Vicky claims she had fallen in when leaning over to take a picture, and Leila's father calls to check in on her. Leila tells her dad she will talk to him the next day as the music is too noisy, and returns to talking with their new friends. Vicky asks for them to hang out for the rest of the cruise, and Sean agrees to go snorkeling with Vicky and Leila the next day.

That night, they return to the cruise ship drunk and Leila does not feel well, so they leave their room temporarily and spend some time on the balcony. Sean gets her to agree to a romantic dinner just the two of them in a restaurant in Antigua after the snorkeling, and they then return to their room. Before heading to bed, Sean locks the ring he had brought in the safe.

Back in the present, the air marshal instructs the stewardess to tell the pilot to turn the plane around and for Sean to put his hands behind his back. Then, a shot rings out from the cockpit and the plane tilts at a sharp angle. The marshal asks who is in the cockpit.

Meanwhile, in Coral Gables, Florida, at the President's Retreat, a party is going on and President Elias Martinez, his wife, and son, arrive. The President is then called away into a meeting with Director Blake Sterling, General Whitman, and the Vice President, who ask him to reconsider his decision to announce the close of the Mount Inostranka Facility. The President notes that the prisoners in the facility may not be Americans, but they have not been treated fairly; and that they already granted one reporter exclusive access to keep a lid on the story until today. The Director replies, then, that it is fine to let the public know, but asks that the prisoners not be released.

Thirteen months earlier, President Martinez talks with Director Sterling in the Oval Office upon receiving a file about the Mount Inostranka facility. The Director answers the President that there are 97 prisoners, and the President says he wants to go to the facility and meet them. Arriving at the facility, General Whitman informs the President that they have been assembled in the mess hall as he asked. The President notes he wants to see their living quarters and research labs, and then he is introduced to the prisoners' leader, Sophia.

Back in the present, a female reporter addresses a camera outside the President's Retreat. She states she will have an exclusive interview with the President following the press conference. Meanwhile, inside, the President greets Sophia and asks his assistant Rachel if everything is ready for the press conference. Rachel calls to locate the Vice President, and learns that he left hours earlier with Director Sterling and General Whitman. Then, the secret service get a Code Red and rush to take the President, his family, and Sophia to safety. The agents explain that they have lost all radar capability, that the entire system is down along the Eastern seaboard. The President makes it to his vehicle with his family just in time to witness a jetliner descending straight for them.

Eight days earlier, Leila's father, Michael Buchanan, talks with his wife in their home about giving her more space than his seven year old daughter, but then decides to call her. Meanwhile, Mrs. Buchanan tells Samantha to get her bicycle out of the rain, and Samantha heads outside to get it. However, when she steps outside, an unknown person grabs her. Later, two people enter the Buchanan home and one of them fires two shots.

Later, on the present day, Michael appears dressed as an airline captain and boards Flight 514. He is greeted by the stewardess, Maureen Donovan, and enters the cockpit. The co-pilot says he thought he was going to be flying alone, and Michael says there was a scheduling change. The co-pilot also notes the weather service says it should be clear skies all the way to São Paulo.

On board the flight in the present, Sean convinces the air marshal to get the stewardess to open the cockpit door; however, the pilot is given a moment to override the unlock and does so, making it so the stewardess cannot get in. Then, two fighter jets appear on both sides of the plane.

Seven days earlier, Sean goes alone with Vicky snorkeling and tells her that Leila was feeling sick and stayed in her cabin. Vicky says that Greg went on a jungle excursion. They take a photo together and arrive back at the cruise ship. However, when Sean goes to his door, his key card does not work and Leila does not answer the door. Sean goes to get a new room key, but the ship's desk clerk cannot find him in the ship's registry and a J.B. and Marla Olsen are listed as staying in his room. Insisting his room is 5314, he eventually convinces the ship's security guard to let him up to his room, and the guard knocks on the door. This time, the door opens and "J.B." and "Marla" are inside. Sean barges in the room and looks around for his girlfriend, without success, and is then escorted back to the lobby by the security guard. The guard then asks for his passport, but Sean had left it in the room with all his things, so he is asked to the security office. Before that happens, Sean gets permission to call his girlfriend, but the number is not in service. He also tries her parents' home, but only the voicemail answers and he leaves a message. Sean then flees the lobby of the cruise ship.

Back in the present, Sean pleads on the phone for Mike to answer him in the cockpit. On the ground, everyone is fleeing the approaching plane as it nears the President's Retreat. Simon Lee is in his SUV, approaching the retreat, and spots the plane. He tells someone to do it now if they are going to do it. Then, the fighter jet pilots radio that something is jamming their systems and are forced to break off pursuit of the plane. Then, suddenly, there is a bright blue bubble of light in the sky that appears before the moving plane and envelopes it. This causes an air shockwave that knocks over tables and chairs on the ground. When the light passes, the plane has disappeared. The President answers a Secret Service agent that he is fine, then speaks with Sophia who tells him that "They saved them." The President asks who saved them, and Sophia replies "I haven't told you everything."
