Chapter 20
Sydney’s head hadn’t been resting on the pillow for more than a minute before she was dead asleep. Michael snuggled up to her and watched her for the longest time, amazed she was there after they’d been apart for so long. After a three and a half hour nap, Sydney awoke, changed into her bathing suit and went down to the pool. She and Michael needed to talk about their plans, but they were going to do it outside on that beautiful day.

“Oh my god this pool is insane,” Sydney exclaimed at the expansive water area around them.

“I know it’s so cool!” Michael laughed. The two of them climbed into the warm water and Michael began floating on his back with a long, relaxed sigh.

“You’re killing me!” Sydney groaned. “I need to know about your plans and I need to know now!”

“Okay, okay,” he laughed as he stood up in the water and wrapped his arms around her. “Well, first we’re gonna spend the summer in Steve’s pool house… see his parents are really, really rich…”

“Obviously,” Sydney laughed, thinking of the suite and now the pool house.

“Right, they own some vineyard or something… anyway, I went home with him over Easter, told his mother about us and she finds us simply adorable, so we’re going to stay there at least for the time being. Also his father is a lawyer and-”

“His father is a lawyer and they own the vineyard?!”

“Yeah the vineyard was inherited from his mother’s side of the family. Anyway, his father said he’d help us in any way we need which brings me to my next point. We’re going to get married and then we’re going to apply for some type of citizenship based on the fact that we can’t actually go home because they’ll kill us.”

“Kill?” Sydney gulped.

“Okay, well not kill, but they won’t let us in the country, so we’d, essentially be homeless,” he told her.

“Right…,” Sydney said in a wary tone.

“Hey, it’s going to be fine, I promise you,” Michael said as he stroked her cheek. Then he gave her a gentle kiss. “We’re going to get through this.”

“Yeah, I know,” she smiled at him. Then she wrapped her arms around his neck and hugged him tightly.

After spending an hour at the pool, Sydney and Michael returned to the hotel suite to shower and change to get ready for dinner. They met up with Steve, Wendy and John before heading down to grab a bite to eat. After their meal, they began walking through the hotel’s casino, which Sydney and Michael were amazed by. While the guys headed for the black jack table and Wendy went for the slots, Michael and Sydney decided it was best they not gamble away the little money they had.

They continued to walk through the casino area and the hotel until Michael stopped suddenly. “Look,” he gestured with their hands that were entwined together. Sydney looked in the direction he pointed and saw a wedding chapel.

She laughed. “That’s so… random.”

“Well they’re everywhere here. That’s the point of Vegas. Come, get drunk, gamble away all your money, get married,” he said simply.

Sydney laughed again until she saw the serious look on Michael’s face. “Wait….you mean we’re gonna…?”

“Well, that’s why you came over, isn’t it? So we could get married?” he smiled at her.

“Well yeah but…,” she sighed and walked over to the nearest bench to sit down on. “It’s just so soon I mean…. I mean, do you ever think we’re rushing into things. We don’t have jobs – we can’t have jobs and…. and some days I can’t help but wonder if this is a mistake or… I don’t know.”

Michael’s brow furrowed. “Well, Syd, we don’t really have much of a choice…”

“See that’s my point! If we’re getting married because we don’t see another option then that’s not a good reason!” she exclaimed, wringing out her hands with worry.

Michael reached over and took her hands in his. “I don’t know what to say Syd. I mean, marrying and saying here in America is our only choice if we want to stay together… but that’s not why I want to marry you. Even if we weren’t from separate countries I’d still want to marry you because I love you and… and these five months apart have killed me. I missed you so much I could hardly stand it and I know I couldn’t stand missing you for my whole life.”

Sydney smiled softly as tears burned in her eyes. “That’s how I feel too… missing you killed me…. So… so we’re gonna get married?” she asked with a slight giddy giggle.

“Yep,” he laughed in return. Sydney flung her arms around his neck and gave him a tight hug. “Come on let’s go find everyone else,” Michael said as he grabbed her hand.

It took them twenty minutes to round up their three friends who were very reluctant to leave their gambling tables to go to an impromptu wedding. It was Steve who reminded them that they needed to obtain a license from the courthouse, which was luckily open twenty four hours. Sydney and Michael took a cab to the courthouse and fortunately only had to wait in line for a few minutes before they were issued a license. Then, they took the cab back to the hotel and went with Steve, John and Wendy to the wedding chapel. Getting married ahead of them at the chapel were two couples, one obviously very intoxicated and the other with a bride who appeared to be nine months pregnant.

Finally, it was Sydney and Michael’s turn. They paid the one hundred and fifteen dollars for their ceremony and then walked into the decorated chapel. With Michael’s friends as their witnesses, they repeated their brief vows and were married within minutes.

“Oh my god… I can’t believe that’s it,” Sydney laughed as she and Michael walked out of the chapel hand in hand. “It just seemed so easy.”

“That’s the point. How else do you think so many drunk people get married here each year?” John pointed out.

“I guess so,” Michael laughed. Upon reaching the edge of the casino, the group parted ways: Sydney and Michael were going back up to their suite while the rest of them were going to continue to gamble and drink cocktails.

“I can’t believe I’m you’re wife!” Sydney giggled on the elevator ride up.

“I can’t believe it either,” Michael said before giving her a quick kiss. Michael managed to keep himself in check until they were in their suite before giving her a toe-curling passionate kiss. “You know, this isn’t a bad place to have a honeymoon.”

“Mm no – but oh!” she gasped. “The guys are gonna come back and know we’re…,” she let her voice drift off.

“SO?!” Michael questioned. Sydney gave him an embarrassed look. “Syyyd come on,” he whined, “it’s been six months.”

“I know I know it’s just weird… but I’ll get over it,” she assured him with a smile.

“Good, because I love you… and I’m so glad I’m your husband,” he told her.

She giggled softly at the word ‘husband’, “Yeah, me too.”

Epilogue
“Marie! Marie come ‘ere,” Michael called out to his six year old daughter. She scampered over to him and he pulled her up into his arms, holding her on his hip. “Do you see the plane Marie? That’s what we’re going to get on in a few minutes and then we’re going to fly to see grandma.”

“Will it hurt?” Marie asked quietly.

“No, of course not,” Michael laughed before kissing her cheek. Then he walked back to the chairs where Sydney was sitting guarding their luggage until it was time to board the plane. A few days earlier, the two of them had celebrated their tenth wedding anniversary. Though the first few months of their marriage had been very difficult, with hardly any money living in a new country and trying to acquire their citizenship, they’d made it through and were better people because of it.

Immediately after leaving Vegas, Sydney and Michael began applying for citizenship and working with Steve’s father to do so. The government, unfortunately, did not work as fast as they would have liked, and Sydney’s visa nearly expired before they were granted a temporary stay in the States. Eventually they were granted full citizenship on the grounds that they could no longer return to their home countries.

As soon as they were able to obtain jobs, they did so. Sydney found a job as a substitute teacher for a seventh grade English class whose regular teacher was out on maternity leave. After that job ended, she found a permanent position teaching at a private school. Meanwhile, Michael continued with his education at the school from which he graduated. Once he was finished, he found a job immediately, working with pharmaceuticals.

Luckily for them, Michael’s job paid incredibly well and using his salary plus the money Sydney was making they were able to move into a small townhouse of their own. It wasn’t until Sydney became pregnant with Marie that they moved into the medium sized house where they lived now.

Things for them in America were perfect. They’d created a perfect home for themselves and their daughter and they’d never once regretted leaving their own countries behind. The only sad part for Sydney was missing her mother. Sydney’s mother had only been to America to visit once a few weeks after Marie was born. She stayed for two weeks to help Sydney with the baby before she had to return home.

A few years after that, war broke out between East and West Lasonvia. It appeared some people thought their division should continue while others felt it had gone on long enough and the two countries needed to unite. In the end, the latter side won and their country was simply known as Lasonvia, no east or west. Though people were legally able to move freely from east to west, few did because of the deep prejudices that still lay there.

Sydney and Michael saw the uniting of the East and West as a wonderful opportunity to them. Though they did not wish to uproot themselves and their daughter and move back to Europe, they did crave a visit to their homeland. A year after the war ended and things had calmed down, Sydney and Michael planned on doing just that. They were flying out with Marie to visit Sydney’s mother, since she was the only relative they spoke with. Sydney hadn’t been in touch with her father at all. According to her mother, he was so furious when he found out what she’d done he never wanted to see her or speak to her again. As for Michael’s mother, though he’d attempted to contact her a few times, she always hung up with him, not wanting to speak with the child she viewed as a traitor.

“Mommy I’m scared,” Marie said when the plane began to take off. She gripped both her mothers and father’s hands tightly while they calmed her with soothing words, assuring her everything would be fine. As much as the two of them wanted to return home, they both dreaded the trip due to its extreme length; they knew that Marie would be very cranky by the time they arrived in the former East Lasonvia.

~*~

Utterly exhausted, Sydney transferred her daughter, who was asleep (finally!) to her husband so she could gather up their carry-on luggage while they disembarked from the plane. Michael carried the limp form of his daughter all the way to the baggage claim area before he passed her off to Sydney, who would carry her the rest of the way. Despite Marie’s substantial weight, their luggage was still heavier, meaning Michael had the wonderful task of carrying it.

When Sydney spotted her mother waiting for them, she was overwhelmed with relief and broke down into tears, which were fueled by her tired state. “I’m so happy to see you!” she sobbed to her mother while trying not to wake Marie.

“Oh sweetheart I’m happy to see you too and look at Marie… she’s huge!” her mother exclaimed while combing her hair through some of the younger girl’s blonde locks.

“I’ve noticed,” Sydney sniffed with a slight laugh.

The tired travelers dragged themselves out to the car while Sydney’s mother chattered non stop about how much fun they were going to have on their week and a half long stay there. Immediately upon arriving at Sydney’s mother’s house, Michael and Sydney had plans to go directly to bed and sleep until the next day. Marie, however, chose that time to wake up and start screaming at the sight of the grandmother she’d never known. They managed to calm her down enough to let Sydney’s mother sit with her while her wary parents took a much needed rest.

~*~

“Michael, are you going to call your mother while we’re here?” Sydney suggested a few days into their trip. They were having a wonderful time taking Marie to see the places where they grew up. They even went to see the old library at the In-Between, but it apparently had been destroyed during the war and was gone.

“I guess I should, shouldn’t I?” he asked. Sydney nodded with an encouraging smile. Sighing, Michael walked over to the phone and dialed his mother’s phone number. She answered it in one ring and Michael spoke quickly, “Maman it’s me but before you hang up I’m in the country.”

“What?” his mother asked softly.

“I’m in the country. Sydney and I brought our daughter Marie to see Sydney’s mother. We’re staying with her,” he explained.

“Marie?” she asked softly, emotion beginning to show in her voice.

“Yes, Marie. She’s six. Would you like to meet her?” he asked cautiously.

“Oh yes!! Yes I would!”

“Alright,” Michael laughed softly. “Well, Sydney and I could-”

“Oh,” his mother cut him off in an uncertain tone. “Couldn’t you bring her yourself – by yourself?” she questioned. Michael sighed heavily; he knew he shouldn’t have been overly hopeful when it came to his mother.

~*~

“What’d she say?” Sydney asked her husband when he returned to the kitchen after his phone call.

“She wanted to see Marie…. But not you. She just wanted to see Marie and I,” he told Sydney sadly.

“Oh,” she said, her tone short as she looked to the floor. “Well that’s okay… you can take her and I’ll just stay here…”

“No,” Michael said. Sydney looked up to him confused. “I told her that we’re a family, a package deal. If she wants to see us she gets all of us. You’re my wife and I’m not leaving you behind. She needs to be an adult about this and stop hating you for no reason at all.”

“And…what’d she say to that?” Sydney asked cautiously.

“She hung up on me….”

“Oh Michael,” Sydney sighed as she pulled him into a hug, “I’m so sorry.”

“Yeah I’m sorry too… sorry she has to be that way. If she doesn’t want to get to know her grandkids well then…that’s just too bad for her then,” Michael said with a half smile.

“Grandkids?” Sydney laughed. “You’re talking like we already have more than one.”

“Well we do…kinda,” he said as he put his hand on her still flat belly.

“Yeah, kinda, only one of them is much easier to take care of… for now,” Sydney laughed. He laughed, too, and gave her a sweet kiss.
