Chapter 1-this first chapter will be narrated in the first person. Please read and review!
My name is Rachel Butcher.
I am applying fpr a walk-in as an agent of the CIA.
I used to work for SD-6. That was before they were destroyed and I found out who I was really working for.
I want to tell you my story.
~
I was a grad student at UCLA. The only person in my life was my father. My mother had divorced him and was living in New York.
One day, I was sitting on a bench on campus. A woman approached me and handed me a business card that said "Credit Dauphine" on the front. It had an address and a phone number.
"What is this about?"
She told me that she worked with US Intelligence, and they wanted me to come work for them.
A week later, I sat at a desk in the Credit Dauphine building. Someone handed me a stack of non-disclosure agreements that I then signed. Following that, I began doing desk work at Credit Dauphine. They told me that this was the 'evaluation phase', that they would be determining when I was ready to become a real officer of the CIA. They also told me that the evaluation phase usually took about a year or so, maybe longer.
About three months after I started my evaluation, they told me that I was ready for the 'transition' or agent training. It was during the transition that they told me their official name: SD-6. They told me that SD-6 was a black-ops division of the CIA; meaning a division that is funded by the CIA's black budget. Operations that are highly classified, even hidden from Congressional oversight. I believed them. I would be a while before I realized just how wrong I was to do that.
~~
I sat in the park, in the same place I sat when that woman, Danielle Rodriguez, approached me about SD-6. I sat there, and my beeper rang. I called the usual number.
"Hello?"
"Rachel, we need you to come in." Danielle's familiar voice said through my phone.
"Sure". I headed for my car, excited that I might be going on a mission. I would be going to serve my country.
~
Walking up the street, I smiled as I strode past the logo sign for the building. In order to get to SD-6 Headquarters, I had to take the 'executive' elevator to sublevel 6. I then stood in the scanning room and let the biometric scanner authorize me for clearance into HQ.
After entering the conference room called Op-Tech, Danielle explained to me my assignment. She pressed a button on a remote, and a picture of a 20 story tower next to a plaza.
"Gentel Headquarters, in Paris. It seems that Gentel has drawn up specs for a chemical weapon they plan on releasing two days from today. By then, the weapon will be complete."
"Why? What's happening then?"
"Gentel poses as a French software company. They are scheduled to reveal their new plan for a 'nanotechnology' software program. It's a strategy; a 'cover' time to release the weapon while the whole world is distracted. Your mission is to gain entry to the server room, download the specs. And while you're at it, copy the program, swipe the hard drive clean, and bring it all back to us. You'll go in posing as a wealthy software buyer looking for a new security system for your clients' computers. You leave tonight."
"Alright." I said.
I drove out of the SD-6 parking garage and saw her walk out the door of a donut shop across the street.
