Space The unsung hero space explorer

I was very moved recently by an article about the first dog into space, the Soviet space dog Laika.

I had heard of her and I knew she was the first dog in space but I never knew what happened to her, I kind of assumed she had been euthanised prior to oxygen depletion, as was the official Soviet story at the time, unfortunately this is not true.

As it happened there was a malfunction and the payload did not separate from the R - 7 sustainer, she died from overheating within hours of launch.

I think we should honour her and all the animals that have been sent into space in an effort to ensure it would eventually be as safe as it could be for humans. They paid the ultimate price and I think deserve our thanks.
