Activision announced their FPS version of The Walking Dead, based on the AMC TV show, just as Telltale Games' point 'n' click adventure The Walking Dead was hitting its stride. A stride that eventually became a bulldozing assault that ultimately won it game of the year in the eyes of many critics, including us, and we didn't even make a list.

So, how can Activision compete with that? By comparison, an FPS seems at odds with what made Telltale Games' cerebral and emotional tale so good. But, this is a different story - this is more action-centric based around the exploits of the series' mysterious crossbow-wielding survivor Daryl Dixon, alongside his brother Merle.

Terminal Reality, responsible for vamp-em-up Bloodrayne, are no strangers to adapting comics, but this is based more on the TV series as some of the stars show in this latest 'giving-nothing-away' teaser from Activision.

Luckily, Activision were kind enough to let us all in on a list of features they expect the game to deliver:

An engrossing single player campaign that lets players experience the world of The Walking Dead through the eyes of fan-favorite, Daryl Dixon.

A unique style of gameplay that blends first-person action with resource management for a focus on surviving the undead nightmare.

Authentic character design and frighteningly realistic animations. Norman Reedus (Darryl) and Michael Rooker (Merle) provide the voice of their characters. Walkers look, move and react to sights, sounds and smells just the way that they do in the hit television show.

An emphasis on survival - every threat needs to be assessed and every situation analyzed. Players will choose whether to stay and fight while risking a gruesome death or using stealth to avoid the undead. Resources are scarce and scattered; gamers will have to not only ration supplies, but carefully consider their food, medical needs, ammunition, and other goods as survival in the game is based upon wit and intellect more so than simple, sheer skill.

Decisions matter as Daryl will encounter a slew of characters that can help or hurt him in a variety of ways; whether or not they accompany him is completely up to the player and represents just some of the major decisions that will constantly be made.

So, how will it do in the shadow of not only the success of the TV show, the comic books and now the incredibly well-received adventure series? We don't think it'll matter, this is a very different beast. Although, is another FPS what the 'zombie' genre needs? Maybe the reason Telltale Games struck gold was because it took the staples of the genre and turned them into an emotional tale rather than one based on reflexes and indiscriminate blasting. We'll see in March!
