The Weyland-Yutani Corporation, often shortened to Weyland-Yutani and commonly referred to as Wey-Yu or simply "The Company", is a large British/Japanese multinational conglomerate.
It was founded in 2099 by the merger of Weyland Corp and the Yutani Corporation.
Weyland-Yutani is primarily a technology supplier, manufacturing synthetics, spaceships and computers for a wide range of industrial and commercial clients, making them a household name.
Weyland-Yutani also has numerous non-manufacturing interests; the company has extensive assets in interplanetary shipping and transport, and is one of the corporations that operates human colonies outside the solar system through the Extrasolar Colonization Administration, which it owns or controls. The company also has a seat in the Interstellar Commerce Commission's Company Review Board, and owns or controls the United States Colonial Marine Corps. They hold their main offices in Tokyo, London, San Francisco, the Sea of Tranquillity on Luna and on Thedus.

The Weyland-Yutani Corporation was formed when Weyland Corp absorbed the Yutani Corporation in a hostile takeover in 2099. Following the merger, Weyland-Yutani opened with the largest share value ever recorded on the Systems Exchange. The company would go on to buy out numerous other businesses, investing in almost every sector, and had a controlling stake in a vast number of diverse corporations. According to some, Weyland-Yutani owned "pretty much everything" by the 2150s. Many of the companies wholly or partly owned by Weyland-Yutani continued to operate under their own brand, such as the Kelland Mining Company.

The Weyland-Yutani corporation was originally named Weylan-Yutani, the original name was created by Ron Cobb, one of the designers of the Nostromo and its crew's uniforms

"One of the things I enjoyed most about Alien was its subtle satirical content. Science fiction films offer golden opportunities to throw in little scraps of information that suggest enormous changes in the world. There's a certain potency in those kinds of remarks. Weylan Yutani for instance is almost a joke, but not quite. I wanted to imply that poor old England is back on its feet and has united with the Japanese, who have taken over the building of spaceships the same way they have now with cars and supertankers. In coming up with a strange company name I thought of British Leyland and Toyota, but we couldn't use "Leyland-Toyota" in the film. Changing one letter gave me "Weylan," and "Yutani" was a Japanese neighbor of mine."
—Ron Cobb, "The Authorized Portfolio of Crew Insignias from The United States Commercial Spaceship Nostromo Designs and Realizations" by John Mollo and Ron Cobb
The original spelling of the Company's name was Weylan Yutani (note that there was no D in the name). At no time in Alien nor in the portfolio was the name of the Company spelled with a D. This was changed to "Weyland-Yutani" in Aliens.

From the start, even the lowliest of Weyland-Yutani's employees were aware of the corrupt nature of the conglomerate. It was common knowledge amongst the company's commercial haulage fleet that senior management routinely bribed and paid off inspectors rather than submit to thorough safety inspections and reviews of their vessels.

Some time prior to 2122, the Weyland-Yutani Corporation detected the signal being broadcast from the derelict on Acheron (LV-426), the middle moon of 3 orbiting the ringed planet Calpamos. While the language was unknown, the company succeeded in deciphering enough of the message to learn it was a warning regarding the deadly species Xenomorph XX121. They subsequently dispatched the USCSS Nostromo to investigate, without the crew's knowledge, leading to initial human contact with the Xenomorph, the death of all but one of the ship's crew and the loss of the Nostromo itself. While the incident and the existence of the Xenomorph was apparently covered up by those involved, in a twist of irony the company later coincidentally established the Hadley's Hope terraforming colony on LV-426.

By the 2290s, Weyland-Yutani began experiencing serious financial and political pressures. Its colony at Nu Indi successfully sued for independence, effectively removing itself from the company's influence, and two years later Weyland-Yutani lost out to rival conglomerate Ridton on a contract to supply the United Systems Military with FTL drives, severely affecting the company's financial performance. Finally, in 2349, megacorporations such as Weyland-Yutani were outlawed altogether; the company appealed, but after three years of costly litigation the ban was upheld and Weyland-Yutani formally folded. Many of the company's weapons and R&D interests were taken over by the USM.

However, even during this time, agents of Weyland-Yutani continued to operate in secrecy. The company utilized contacts within the USM who passed them information about their various research projects. Following the crash of the USM Auriga on Earth, Weyland-Yutani seized upon much of the information collected about the Xenomorphs by the USM, incorporating it into Alien: The Weyland-Yutani Report, an extensive report on the species Xenomorph XX121 and humanity's historical encounters with it. Following the fall of the USM, Weyland-Yutani eventually re-emerged as a powerful multinational corporation, a resurgence partly fuelled by the company's role in cleaning up the heavily polluted and damaged Earth, and the corresponding surge in public approval and support that went with it.

Nostromo Incident

In 2122, the commercial hauler Nostromo was on its way to Earth from a job in the Solomons, the Nostromo passed through the Zeta II Reticuli system, the Nostromo's onboard computer, "MU-TH-UR" intercepted a distress beacon originating from a planetoid (which later came to be known as Acheron) within close proximity to the ship. The crew members are awakened prematurely from their hypersleep, the crew responded to the beacon and landed the Nostromo on the planetoid. Warrant Officer Kane was impregnated by a parasitic life form discovered within an ancient derelict space craft found on the planet's surface. Kane was taken back to the Nostromo for medical treatment, only to die hours later when the creature that was impregnated within him grew and bursts violently out of his chest while being witnessed by the entire crew. Weyland-Yutani gave orders to Science Officer Ash and "MOTHER" to implement Special Order 937 and ensure the survival of the Xenomorph specimen at any cost and deemed the rest of the Nostromo's crew expendable. The Nostromo was destroyed during the incident and all of its crew were killed by the Xenomorph, except for Ellen Ripley who managed to escape on an emergency vessel and to ultimately kill the Xenomorph.

Seegson was founded as Sieg and Son by entrepreneur Josiah Sieg. With the advent of faster-than-light travel in 2034, Sieg and Son became a major competitor to Weyland Corp, who were the pioneers in the field. The company's willingness to share its FTL products with other corporations — a practice that set it apart from Weyland Corp — helped it to achieve huge success. By 2066, Sieg and Son was operating huge manufacturing plants in London, Buenos Aires, Nagasaki and on Luna. In 2071, the Sieg family sold their shares back into the company, which continued to expand at an exponential rate. Sieg and Son became market leaders in the production of cars, chemicals, educational equipment and building materials. Towards the end of the century, the company formally changed its name to Seegson.

Among Seegson's more notable endeavours was its heavy investment in deep space orbital platforms, such as Sevastopol Station, which the company bought from previous owners Lorenz SysTech. Seegson turned the dilapidated station into a bustling freeport and made it the primary off-planet site for the development, manufacture, sale and maintenance of their Working Joe androids. The station was also outfitted with an APOLLO mainframe that governed its day-to-day operation, the company winning awards for its advanced AI system.

However, Seegson's decision to gamble on deep space orbital platforms for extra-solar habitation, as opposed to the terraforming and colonization technologies being pursued by the Weyland-Yutani Corporation, would prove disastrous. According to reporter Julia Jones of the Colonial Times, it became "abundantly clear that Seegson has gambled wildly with both its own investment and that of banking corps such as Geofund Investor". The company's rush to expand into space colonization, and the high operating costs involved with such a venture, meant it was unable to support itself when the industry collapsed. The failure of Seegson's deep space orbital outposts in favour of planetary habitation crippled Seegson, and many of its flagship settlements — such as Sevastopol — soon became economically unviable and forced to close down.

Special Order 937 was a classified retrieval order given by Weyland-Yutani to Science Officer Ash aboard the USCSS Nostromo. The order's main priority was to preserve the Xenomorph specimen that was encountered by the Nostromo in the Zeta II Reticuli system and bring it back alive for analysis. All other priorities are considered secondary and all of the Nostromo's crew members are deemed expendable.
