Recently we asked our community what their first stumbling blocks were when first delving into HeroEngine. Let’s take a quick look at what some of our developers said:
  1. HeroScript – Several of you mentioned that one of the most difficult bits to learning HeroEngine is working with HeroScript.
  2. Art pipeline – The art pipeline was another issue some of you had when first starting out.
  3. GOM/DOM – Another issue many have is working with the internal managers GOM and DOM.
These three issues seem to be the most relevant amongst all of our new teams. Let’s take a quick look at where you can find help for some of these issues. The HeroEngine wiki is a great place to start to learn about how to use the different HeroEngine tools. We are sort of sticklers about keeping the wiki well documented and add to and update it very regularly. Anything you are wanting to learn how to do with HeroEngine, you can easily learn there. If you still have questions after reading the wiki, the HeroEngine forum is a great place to go to next. Our engineers, community managers and community of developers will answers your questions quickly.

Learning HeroScript

Learning HeroScript can be a challenge if you are new to programming all together. At the moment, the wiki more geared towards developers who already have programming experience. In the immediate future, I am currently busy with a quickstart video series on HeroScript to help everyone get up to speed with HeroScript quickly and painlessly. To check out the video’s I’ve already created for HeroEngine, check out my YouTube channel.
Below are some useful links on our wiki on learning HeroScript.

HeroEngine’s Art Pipeline

In a shared environment such as HeroEngine, stringent path and naming conventions need to be ensured. Many new game developers are not used to workin in shared and fixed art import pipelines. In this forum post, we list the top four causes and solutions for art import problems
Many of you have been waiting for the FBX pipeline due to the lack of 3ds Max or Maya license. The FBX pipeline is definitely on our list of features to add for upcoming updates.
In the meantime, for those of you with 3ds Max/Maya check out the links below for further assistance on creating the art asset server as well as very useful information for configuring 3ds Max/Maya for use with HeroEngine.

GOM and DOM

And last but not least, we have GOM and DOM. As mentioned above I am working on a new set of tutorials for HeroScript in video format. Since DOM/GOM are tightly integrated with HeroScript we will also have video tutorials on the DOM/GOM. However, our wiki contains very useful information on both — what they are and how to use them.
