Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1961)
"Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" (1964)
Voyage chronicled the adventures of the world's first privately owned nuclear submarine, the SSRN Seaview. Designed by Admiral Harriman Nelson, she was a tool of oceanographic research for the Nelson Institute of Marine Research. Though the show is known for its few "monster" episodes, many plots were veiled commentaries of what was happening in the news. Such plotlines as nuclear doomsday, pollution of natural resources, foreign threat, and theft of American technology are all still relevant today. Written by Linda Adams {Garridon@aol.com}

- The props used in this show, (such as the computers and guns) also were used in "Lost in Space" (1965), "The Time Tunnel" (1966), "Land of the Giants" (1968) and "Batman" (1966).
- Epsiode 2.1, "Jonah And The Whale," was the first episode to be broadcast in color. Seaview is redesigned with only one set of observation windows and a hatch for the flying sub, although stock footage was used throughout seasons 2-4 showing the sub with three or six windows. New uniforms appear also as well as the flying sub. Over the course of seasons 2-4, there were six different flying sub models used for filming.
- The Seaview had a sister sub called the Polydor that was destroyed in the second episode.
- This is the longest-running of all Irwin Allen-produced science fiction series. It ran for four seasons, from 1964 to 1968.
- Late in the filming of the second season, Richard Basehart fell ill during the filming of the episode "The Monster's Web" and was unable to complete that episode and work in the next two. "The Monster's Web" was rewritten to minimize the part of his character, Adm. Nelson (knocked out of action in the first act), with a stand-in used for many shots with the face hidden and lines dubbed. The next episode, "The Menfish", had Nelson away and his lines reassigned to guest character Adm. Park (Gary Merrill). The following episode, "The Mechanical Man", had Nelson still away and reassigned his lines to Capt. Crane (David Hedison) and Crane's lines to Cmdr. Morton (Robert Dowdell). Basehart returned in time to appear in the season's last episode, "The Return of the Phantom."
- Popular character actor, and former professional wrestler, Henry Kulky was chosen as a series regular in the role of Chief Curley Jones. The role was cut short when Kulky was stricken by a fatal heart attack in February 1965 that ended his career which included over 100 features and television episodes.

- Some of the sub's equipment and sound effects were recycled from The Fly (1958).
- The model and interior sets of the submarine cost producer Irwin Allen $400,000, so he was naturally quite keen to get some further use out of them. Since the film was a hit, he was able to convince ABC-TV to turn it into a series, which became the longest-running one he ever had.
- Director's Trademark: The voice-over for the newscasts that crew members watch, detailing the burning forests, etc., is done by director Irwin Allen.
