Re: Watchmen (2009) - Official Thread

In your location... uh, is that in a secret underground bunker? Are you really Dick Cheney???

Re: Watchmen (2009) - Official Thread

No matter how good this looks, I am sick of the 'Based on a Graphic Novel' tag. It seems that every other movie out today is based on a book, a play, TV series, older movie that doesn't need to be remade because it will lose it's 1951 charm, and Keanu Reeves will slaughter the role of Klaatu (ahem...), or a comic book. There are not enough original Sci Fis out today...

Re: Watchmen (2009) - Official Thread

Simply put, Hollywood has run out of ideas so they have to seek other reference material. Lately it has been [strike]comic books[/strike] graphic novels. I am sure that in a few more years the movie adaptions of comics will be once again relegated back to the b-movie budget category when another source of ideas is found, but in the interim we're getting to see some movies that in years past would have never been made.

The counter-argument as to why they would not have been made is because the special effects needed for some of the comic adaptions would have been costly in the past, but I do not put much stock in that argument because big budget FX laden movies have come & gone over the decades.

So while comic adaptions are the latest fad for Hollywood to give the big budget treatment to, I'll be building up my Netflix queue and enjoying it before we see a resurgence of movies like The Bridges of Madison County being pushed at the box office.

BREAKING: ‘Watchmen’ Judge Rules Against Warner Bros., Fox Awarded Movie Rights

The long-gestating court battle over the film rights to “Watchmen” took a possibly cataclysmic turn late Wednesday, as Judge Gary Alan Feess ruled in favor of 20th Century Fox, declaring the studio held a copyright interest in the property that would cover distribution of the upcoming “Watchmen” movie.

The ruling doesn’t bode well for Warner Bros., which is producing the Zack Snyder-directed pic scheduled to hit theaters on March 6. That release date could now be in jeopardy, although the judge appealed for both sides to find common ground and negotiate rather than continue through a trial, The New York Times reported.

The theatrical rights to “Watchmen” — the bestselling graphic novel of all time — have been mired in a series of complicated dealings dating back to the 1980s when Fox acquired the property for producer Larry Gordon. The studio subsequently abandoned plans to make the film, and Gordon began the search for a new partner.

After brushes with Universal and Paramount, “Watchmen” eventually landed at Warner Bros., which began production on the film in 2007 with a budget reportedly close to $150 million. In an additional layer of complication, however, Paramount obtained international distribution rights through an agreement with Warner. That arrangement would presumably also be affected by this latest ruling.

In its long-standing lawsuit, Fox has argued that Gordon never exercized his option to acquire their remaining interest in “Watchmen,” thus leaving distribution rights with the studio. Wednesday’s court decision would mean the judge now agrees with that position.

Back in October, Snyder was tight-lipped about the trial and its potential effect on his film’s release date, but some have claimed that the legal wrangling over “Watchmen” could be tied to a rights battle over the 1960s “Batman” television series. That dispute, also between Fox and Warner Bros., has prohibited Fox from distributing the show to platforms other than television, such as DVD or online.

“Watchmen” figures prominently on Warner’s 2009 slate, and early footage from the film managed to dazzle crowds at July’s San Diego Comic-Con. With legal proceedings still ongoing, it seems the best fans can hope for is a quick settlement allowing the March release to go unimpeded.

Stay tuned to Splash Page for continuing developments in the “Watchmen” legal battle.

Re: BREAKING: ‘Watchmen’ Judge Rules Against Warner Bros., Fox Awarded Movie Righ

I predict Larry Gordon had better find a very good IP (Intellectual Property) lawyer in his near future.

I'm really looking forward to this. I think they learned from the execrable 'League of XG' to follow the original story instead of 'hollywoodizing' it. (LXG might be the most disappointing movie I've ever seen). all the previews/scenes look straight from the GN, which is good.

New "Watchmen" behind-the-scenes video

:smiley:I think watchmen will be great movie, let's wait and see.

Meanwhile you can watch behind-the-scenes video for Zack Snyder's upcoming Watchmen movie. The new video, debuted by Empire, focuses on the character of Rorschach, as played by Jackie Earle Haley, and how Snyder and his team created his distinctive face.

Too many half-assed sex scenes. Literately, ever 10 minutes people were stripping down just to make a few funny faces, then they were done. Boooooring!

Too many butts. I know one of the main characters is naked, and that's fine, the movie is intended for adults after all... But come on! If they weren't showing Dr. Manhattan's blue glowing butt or -----, it was Nite Owl's pale ass.

Diluted storyline makes the movie way too long. Too many flash backs used to explain the characters, too many sentimental moments used to develop relationships, and too many side pursuits to make the city seem alive. Once you're about halfway through the movie, the real story starts, and even it has a very unsatisfying ending.

But was the movie bad? No, not really. I enjoyed it, and will probably watch it again. Even with all it's annoying moments, I think it makes for a decent movie.

I liked the overall ending in the movie over the novel.
I felt that the movie did a better job speeding up the story over the novel as well.

I just went to see this... and all I can say is... "It's rated R people! Why did you take your younger kids to see this movie?" <laughs> My friends heard someone referring to various scenes as they were being shown as "homosexual pornography"... yeah, that's what it is... and when they show women and their knockers in all the movies out there it's totally "straight pornography".

If people read the novel, or knew about Watchmen, they should have known how Mr. Manhattan would appear in the movie. *sigh* ignorant sons of ******* and **** the ******* *******.

I enjoyed the movie. It wasn't the best, but it wasn't intended to be an "all action" movie like so many other comic to movie stories. Soo, I give it 2 thumbs up, and 3-1/2 stars. They did good in my book. Could have been better... (don't ask... there's a lot, but yet, almost unexplainable desires left unsatiated...) and it could have been A LOT worse.

Funny thing about Dr. Man's blue member is that I never realized it was visible in the novel until a friend of mine told me, then I went back through to see it lol. So of course, the first thing I looked for in the movie was the blue member.

Aside from that, I liked how the movie made me feel that same way towards the characters in the novel as I did in the movie.
example.Dan seemed like a nerdy pedophile until he had to be Night Owl.

Watchmen

Awesome movie...

The quotes were enough to drool over, let alone the fighting. I remember the graphic novel being so detailed and immersed. *sigh*, i didnt want it to end.

Oh, and The Comedian is the **** :P

Re: Watchmen

i never read the graphic novel, watched the animated series a few times but i am very much looking forward to seeing this movie. i do hope the movie lives up to what the trailers have been so far?

I didn't like the part in the credit roll at the start where they show what happens to silhouette. The way they did it makes it seem like she was killed for being a lesbian (and the fact no comment is made decrying that doesn't help matters) instead of being ostracised for being a lesbian and then dying due to lack of support from friends against her enemies like it was in the original.

Also sex scene toooo loooooong.

The rest was great though.

Re: Watchmen

Good film, being very faithful to the work of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, but it was IMHO slightly to long and the change in the ending...ummmm. I will say nothing to spoil it, but if you know the Graphic Novel you will know what I mean.

Great effects and visually amazing..
