Water Powered Cars

Yea, I saw that on my guild forums a couple weeks back. Once that starts selling, gas prices are going to have to plunge to compete.

No, gas will be eradicated, you can't make gas for that price. He said 100 miles on 4 ounces, according to this website bashing people for complaining about gas prices, tap water is free and a gallon of Evain is $6.40:
http://www.cockeyed.com/science/gallon/liquid.html

There are 128 US Fluid ounces in 1 gallon of water (source) , so if you put it in gallon jugs you can get 3200 miles off of one gallon of water (128 / 4 = Z, Z x 100 = 3200) ... for free. Even if you buy that Evian felgercarb you're still only paying $6.40

Know how much money it would cost me to get 3200 miles out of gas? My car goes 20 miles to each gallon I buy, and I'm paying $3.15 at the cheap stations (California, SD specifically has the most expensive gas in the country http://www.eia.doe.gov/oil_gas/petroleum/d..._home_page.html )
3200 miles / 20 gallons
20 gallons x $3.15 a gallon =....
$100?
$300?
nah
$400?
Nope.

$504... and that's if gas prices don't go up again. You tell me, would you rather spend somewhere between 0.00-6.40 or 490-510?

It won't be THAT expensive.

Oh and don't worry death, I'll send my Burian kin to defend him! And pirates! (Because pirates are better than ninjas)

well.. im sure water prices will go sky high
Water prices won't go sky high. 4 ounces of water for 100 miles, do you realize how little water that is? I guarentee most people don't even drink 4 ounces of water a day (most of them drink soda or some juices). 75% of the earth is water, I can walk down to the bay and get my own for free. The prices may go up, but not insanely because water is easy to get; oil howevef is hard to find and getting harder.

Hydrogen is not an energy source. It's value is as a transport medium and as a clean fuel. It takes more energy for the electrolysis than it returns in combustion. The real value would be in using solar energy at hydrogen plants built out at sea then the hydrogen can be used as fuel. All you have done is converted the solar energy into a fuel that can be stored and transported.

the car's will not come ready for you to just pour water into, that you can count on. the oil companies will switch over to hydrogen and supply it at their fueling stations just as they do gasoline. and more then likely, the prices won't drop very much.

people are paying for fuel now and show no signs of slowing down. people have to drive and they'll pay to do it. the oil companies know this, and will work very closely with car manufacturers to ensure that they will have the upper hand in what type of fuel is used, and how.

more then likely, the government will then establish laws making it illegal to modify or own a modified vehical that allows you to simply pour tap water into it and it runs. yes, im sure they would have to release some sort of conversion kit that turns older cars into the new standard of fuel. but again, i doubt they would be kits that allow you to just pour water into it and it go's.

im not trying to be a pessimist. its just not realistic to think that suddenly oil companies will throw their collective hands up in the air and say "you got us, we're done. we'll close up shop and retire now, since we have enough money already". you know thats not going to happen. they'll do whatever they can to continue to have a firm grip on how people are mobile.

Sadly.

On the other hand, if one guy can modify his own Escort to run off of water (or, in the case of that scientist, water and gasoline), I'm sure it'd be possible for us to do our own modifications.

Heck, you can buy kits online to convert your car so it can use E85.
