Would you make me the luckiest man alive, will you marry me?”
”It’s about time you asked.” Sydney said, wiping away the tears that ran down her cheeks.
She wrapped her arms around him. “Yes, of course.” Sydney kissed him passionately.
Vaughn couldn’t wipe the grin off his face as they broke apart. ”So what’s your surprise?”
Sydney smiled as she nervously tucked a piece of hair behind her ear. “We’re going to have a baby.”
“Really?” Vaughn asked, excitedly.
Sydney nodded.
He picked her up into his arms and spun her around. He showered her face with light kisses.
”So you’re happy about this?” Sydney smirked.
”Yes, I’m thrilled.” Vaughn grinned. “We’re getting married and we’re having a baby.”
Sydney smiled, she was so happy at this moment; nothing could ruin her good mood.
“How are we going to tell your dad?” Vaughn asked.
Well, that could ruin her good mood.
“I haven’t thought of that yet.”
”Don’t worry about him right now. How long have you known? Is that why you’ve been feeling bad?”
Sydney nodded. “I found out when I went to the doctor’s a couple weeks ago.”
Vaughn just smiled and stared at her in awe.
”What?” Sydney blushed.
”I love you so much... That’s what.”
”Love you, too.” Sydney said, hugging him tightly.
As they hugged in silence, both were thinking the same thing. How was Jack going to react?
~*~
Jack was not happy when his daughter told him that she and Agent Vaughn were taking time off to go on vacation together.
He knew they had a serious relationship, but it didn’t mean he had to except it.
Jack suspected that Vaughn was going to propose to Sydney while they were gone. Jack was less than thrilled.
When he got a call from his daughter arranging dinner when she got back, he was even more confident that she was engaged.
Jack just had to wait one more day to hear the “happy” news.
~*~
”I don’t want to go home.” Sydney whined as she packed up her bag.
Vaughn kissed her forehead. “We have to. Don’t you want to tell Will and Francie and Weiss the great news?”
”Yes” Sydney smiled, “I still don’t want to go.”
”We have to plan a wedding.” Vaughn said.
”Okay! I’m ready to go.” Sydney exclaimed.
“Uh huh” Vaughn smiled.
“We can even talk about the wedding the whole way home.” Sydney said, clearly getting excited.
”I can’t wait.”
~*~
That is exactly what they did.
Sydney rambled on the whole time about getting married before the baby and what kind of dress she wanted and who was going to come.
Vaughn loved her to death, but she was driving him crazy.
“Sydney, honey, let’s talk about something else.”
”Oh... okay.”
Vaughn sighed in relief.
”Do you want a boy or a girl?”
“It doesn’t matter to me. I’ll be happy as long as he or she is happy.”
“Oh” Sydney bit her bottom lip.
”What do you want?”
”Umm... Doesn’t matter...”
”You obviously have a preference.”
”No I don’t” Sydney said defensively.
”Sure” Vaughn said sarcastically.
”Fine! I want a girl. Happy?”
”A girl would be cute. Your eyes, hair, and dimples”
”No your eyes, definitely my nose though.”
“Wait, why your nose?”
”Because...” Sydney said, kissing Michael’s nose playfully.
“You’re not getting away that easy, what’s wrong with my nose?”
”Nothing, dear, it’s cute... on you, but a baby would be cuter with my nose.”
”You don’t like my nose.” Vaughn pouted.
Sydney rolled her eyes. “There’s going to be two babies around the house.”
~*~
Once Sydney and Vaughn landed, they went home to their small suburban house that they had bought together a little less than a year ago.
They unpacked and began the laundry as they prepared themselves for dinner with Jack, or as Vaughn referred to it, “The dinner from hell.”
”It’s not going to be that bad.” Sydney said reassuringly.
“Yeah, but you aren’t the one who proposed and impregnated his daughter.”
”Yes, but I had to except your proposal, and it does take two to tango.”
”But he actually loves you. He doesn’t even like me.”
”Yes he does. He told me he liked you.”
”You’re lying. He never said that.”
”Well... He never said it, but he does like you. You’re still alive aren’t you?”
”I won’t be much longer.” Vaughn shook her head. “It’s been fun, Syd.”
”Shut up.” Sydney stuck out her tongue.
~*~
Sydney stood on her father’s doorstep, about to ring the doorbell, when Vaughn stopped her.
”Syd, it’s not too late to turn back.”
”Michael!”
”At least let me leave.”
”It won’t be that bad.” Sydney smiled, cupping his face gently. “Trust me okay.”
“Okay.” Michael said softly.
Their lips met in a quick, gentle kiss.
~*~
Jack heard a car pull into his driveway. He knew it was Sydney and Vaughn, here to tell him the great news.
Jack was standing in the hallway, waiting for the doorbell to ring.
After a few minutes, it still hadn’t rung.
Jack swung the door open to see Vaughn kissing Sydney.
”Vaughn, get off of my daughter right now.” Jack yelled.
~*~
Vaughn jumped when he heard Jack’s angry voice booming at him.
He quickly back away from Sydney and put his hands in the air, surrendering.
Sydney rolled her eyes, and hugged her father.
”Hey Daddy” She smiled.
”Hi sweetheart” Jack said, leading Sydney inside, ignoring Vaughn completely.
Vaughn groaned and followed the father-daughter pair inside.
Vaughn had been in Jack’s house a few other times, for dinners like these. The first was when Sydney was telling her father about their relationship.
The next couple of times, Sydney dragged him there, because she wanted to spend time with her father.
The worst one so far was when they had to tell Jack they were moving in together.
Jack was still mad at Vaughn for that dinner.
That dinner was going to be nothing compared to the dinner that was happening tonight. This one was a double-whammy. She was pregnant and engaged. Jack was going to kill him.
Vaughn took a deep breath, as he took a seat next to Sydney in the living room.
He sat there with his hands in his lap, not touching Sydney.
Vaughn had learned quickly not to touch Sydney in Jack’s presence. Jack already witnessed a kiss; he didn’t want to provoke him anymore.
Vaughn felt a soft hand, land on his thigh and squeeze gently.
Vaughn looked down; Sydney had her hand resting on his upper leg.
This was not good.
Vaughn looked up to see Jack glaring at Sydney’s hand. She ignored him and continued to talk about the great things they saw in Paris.
“I have to use the restroom, I’ll be right back.” Sydney winked at Vaughn, as she walked out of the room, leaving him and Jack alone.
This was very, very bad.
”So, Agent Vaughn, did anything eventful happen while you were gone?”
Jack was back to calling him Agent Vaughn, Vaughn gulped. It kept getting worse and worse.
”Not really” Vaughn lied.
”Nothing happened that I should know about.”
Vaughn shook his head quickly.
Sydney decided to return. Vaughn was really going to have to thank her later.
”So did you two discuss anything interesting while I was gone?” Sydney asked with a smile.
”No, I was just proposing that we go eat dinner now.”
Vaughn gulped as Sydney said, “That’s a great idea.
The three-some walked into the dining room where Jack’s cook had already set the food on the table.
They were having a roast with potatoes and vegetables with a nice wine.
Sydney saw the bottle and looked at Vaughn nervously.
Jack would notice if she wasn’t drinking anything.
Vaughn sighed, as Jack began cutting up the meat.
~*~
They began eating in silence.
Sydney and Vaughn were too scared to say anything.
Dinner was almost over with, Sydney and Vaughn still hadn’t told Jack.
Jack eyed Sydney curiously. She had barely touched her meal and she hadn’t had any of her wine. Which surprised Jack, it was her favorite vintage.
”Sydney, are you feeling okay?” Jack asked, concerned about his only daughter.
”Yeah, I’m fine.” Sydney leaned over to get a roll, the necklace that was currently holding her engagement ring dangled.
Jack and Vaughn noticed the ring on the end of the necklace at the same time.
”Start explaining that ring right now, Vaughn.” Jack commanded.
”I proposed to Sydney while we were in France.”
”I can see that.”
”So you lied to me earlier, when you said nothing big happened in France?”
”I guess so.” Vaughn gulped.
“Isn’t the male supposed to approach the father for permission before asking the daughter? Isn’t that tradition?”
”Well, our relationship is anything but traditional or ordinary. We haven’t really done anything conventional, why would I choose to start now. Plus, I was going to propose to Sydney no matter what you said.”
Jack had to admit, he made a good point.
”Daddy, we’re getting married in two months.”
”What?” Jack exclaimed. He could accept the proposal, but not that.
“Don’t you think you’re rushing it a little? You’ve barely been engaged two days and you’ve decided on a wedding date. Do you have any idea how much work it is to plan a wedding? There is no way I’m going to give my blessing to a wedding that’s in two months. It’s too rushed.”
Sydney’s eyes watered up and she ran off towards the bathroom.
”She’s been a little emotional lately.” Vaughn explained.
”Why?”
”She should probably be the one to tell you this, but Jack, she’s pregnant.”
Vaughn felt like he should be ducking for cover or something. Knowing Jack, he would have a gun on him and would shoot Vaughn in the face.
Jack’s eyes flared with anger. “That’s why you proposed? You knock my daughter up then propose to her. Do you even love her? You really aren’t ready for marriage.” He yelled.
Vaughn’s green eyes darkened. “I love her with my whole heart. For your information, I proposed before I found out she was pregnant. So get your facts straight before you accuse me of something that’s not true.”
Vaughn stood up and went to find Sydney.
He found her in her old room, hugging a pillow tightly as tears flowed down her cheeks.
”He knows.” Vaughn stated simply, as he sat down next to Sydney and wrapped an arm around her.
”You told him?” She asked.
Vaughn nodded.
”What did he say?”
”Nothing really...” Vaughn sighed. “Just that the baby was the only reason I was marrying you.”
Sydney wiped at the fresh tears in her eyes. ”But that’s not true, right?”
”Syd” He kissed her hair softly. “I love you, I’d marry you no matter what. Baby or not. Remember, I didn’t know you were pregnant when I proposed. It was all because I love you.”
Sydney nodded as she snuggled into his chest. “Will you take me home?”
”Whatever you want.”
Sydney nodded as she stood up and grabbed Vaughn’s hand.
They walked downstairs, and were almost completely out the door when Jack stopped them.
”Wait” He called out.
Sydney and Vaughn turned around to see Jack running towards them.
Normally, that would be a very funny sight and would cause Vaughn to laugh hysterically, but Jack was already pissed at him, he didn’t want to make it worse.
“Vaughn, I’m sorry for saying that you didn’t love my daughter. I know that’s not true.” Jack paused to look Sydney in the eyes.
“Sweetheart, I’m sorry I overreacted. I’m happy for you, really. It’s just... you’re my only baby. I’m not ready to let you go.”
Sydney smiled, as she wrapped her father in a tight hug.
”I love you Daddy.”
”I love you too, Sydney.” Jack smiled.
Yes, Jack Bristow smiled. Vaughn nearly fell in the floor when he saw the change in Jack’s facial features.
”Welcome to the family, Vaughn.” Jack smiled again.
Again, this was really killing Vaughn. He had never seen Jack smile so much in one night.
’Did he just say welcome to the family?’ Vaughn thought in shock.
“Thanks Jack.” Vaughn managed to say.
Sydney and Vaughn ended up staying for dessert, where Jack asked questions about the baby and the wedding. He even told stories of when Sydney was a baby, much to Vaughn’s enjoyment.
When they got home, Sydney turned to Vaughn and smiled. “Now we have to tell your mother?”
