What Genre Is Frankenstein?

With the recent sequels/reboots (Prometheus, Covenant) do you still think they are leaning to the horror spectrum? I actually agree with you about the original Alien that it's a horror monster movie but the recent movies, I think, lean more towards the horror resulting from science gone wrong.

Oh the alien franchise headed directly into SciFi from Aliens onwards. Unfort the third movie laid down the religous overtones that Scott has picked up on through the last couple of movies. Scott can still pull this off imho, needs some clever writing and one huge plot twist in the next movie imho.

You can't talk about genre and switch between movie and book interpretations. "Young Frankenstein" is a comedy. Source material can be treated as nearly any category depending on the intentions of the director - look at the satirical "Starship Troopers".

"Drama" is not a genre in the same way that "Western" or "sci-fi" is. It is a description of tone, not theme or plot. Clearly, many SF stories are comedies, romances, mysteries, horrors, character sketches, allegory, children's stories, etc. There isn't much point in trying to declare a work one thing and not another when nearly every piece of fiction is operating in several spheres.

The original Frankenstein was intended as a Gothic Horror, but Shelley used a topic so incredible that she created a genre.
