What makes a good "horror" movie/book for you?

There are a lot genres that can be considered to be a work of "horror" but what makes it a good horror movie/book/game/etc to you?

Do you prefer the 'classic' iconic characters like Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy, and the Werewolf, or more modern pop-culture characters like Jason from Friday the 13th or Freddy from Nightmare on Elm Street? Do you prefer creature movies like Alien (yes, I contend Alien is as much of a horror movie as it is a sci-fi movie) or the gore of movies like the Saw franchise? What about plain old scary suspense movies like The Amityville Horror?

So how about, what makes it a good horror work for you, well, besides zombies ;) of course?

For me I love every aspect of the horror genre & like everything from silent films all the way through to present day & especially love Asian horror but I do have to be in the right mood to watch & enjoy certain stuff.
