The same thing happened on Family Matter... the youngest daughter, Judy, existed up until S5 and then {insert spooky music} she disappeared and was never referred to again.

It reckon its Hollywood's way of saving money on cast salary. Its a shame because those folks might have had some interesting parts. Everyone digged Steve Erkle, I think he stole the show.

It's exactly what happened. When Family Matters started the show was about Carl Winslow and his family; after Urkel got popular with viewers it essentially became The Urkel Show. I haven't seen an episode in years but even now I can hear Urkel saying "Did I do that?" and it still sounds like nails on a chalkboard.
