XKCD posted this today and it's an amazing and terrifying thought.
 
I was about to ask if that makes us the shark or a fish trying to spot the other hiding fish and realized the answer is a bit meaningless in context of a quote from Clarke.

Arthur C. Clarke said:
Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.

The prospect of never finding anything out there or something out there finding us has terrible implications.
