Chapter 30

Awaking the next moment, Sydney groaned inwardly while remembering the day before. Slowly she got up and rubbed her eyes to get fully awake, preparing herself for the day and what was lying before her. After last night things probably would be pretty tense between them.

And indeed, a bit later both of them sat in the kitchen, eating breakfast in an awkward silence. From time to time they were giving each other short glances when they thought they other wasn’t watching. Silently Sydney watched, thinking how to start a conversation best. She didn’t necessarily wanted to talk about yesterday but they probably should.

“Are we okay?” Sydney asked quietly, looking at him nervously.

“Yeah,” Michael nodded but didn’t look up from the paper he was reading, or pretending to be reading. In reality he was still thinking about yesterday, wondering what had happened there. Now he was thinking he shouldn’t have made the next step. It had changed things between them. Definitely. But not in the way he had wanted to.

“Michael.” Sydney sighed lightly, “Please don’t act like that.”

“I’m sorry.” Michael apologized and looked up at Sydney, “We’re okay, really.”

“About yesterday,” Sydney pondered if she should explain it more but Michael didn’t let her continue.

“I shouldn’t have tried to kiss you.” Michael replied, “It’s okay you didn’t want to.”

“It’s not like I didn’t want to.” Sydney played nervously with her fingers and her face felt like it was burning. Did she really admit that? “But it’s complicated. I know I say that very often but it is.”

“Syd, you don’t need to explain.” Michael assured her.

“But I want to.” Sydney replied and rubbed her forehead lightly, thinking about what to say. “I like you, I like you a lot but being in this situation…” She looked down at her almost seven-months-pregnant belly; “It’s not just me but also the baby. First of all I have to think of him.”

“I understand, really I do.” Michael said softly and took her hand to squeeze it gently, assuring her they were okay.

“But?” Sydney looked at him questioning. She sensed there was something else he wanted to say.

“No but.” Michael replied though that was not completely the truth. He wanted to tell they should try and that she wouldn’t loose him, whether they worked out or not but he could see that she was afraid. Partly he could understand her but there had to be something more. Something she wasn’t telling him. He only wondered what it was?

“Okay.” Sydney nodded but she wasn’t quite satisfied. For the probably thousandth time since yesterday she wished it hadn’t happened. It had changed their friendship and to get back what they had would be difficult. “Maybe we should forget about yesterday?” She suggested carefully. That wasn’t the best idea but it was all she could think of. And, god knows, she had had even worse.

Her suggestion shocked Michael a bit but he tried to hide it, he hadn’t expected that. “Sure.” He said quietly.

“I’ll go change and shower.” Sydney said and got up. At the moment the situation was tense and awkward and she just wanted to escape it for at least a while.

Michael just nodded and watched her walk away but as she reached the door he remembered he was supposed to meet his sister later.

“Syd?” He waited for her to turn, “I have to go meet my sister.”

“Okay.” Sydney replied and walked into her room. Michael sighed and then went to meet Amy.

***

“Hey,” Amy greeted her brother as he walked towards her, “How are you?”

“Great.” Michael muttered. They were meeting in the shopping mall to get something for their parents’ wedding anniversary in a few days.

“What’s going on?” Amy asked as they were walking along the mall. Her brother seemed kind of absent with his thoughts and Amy was curious why.

“Nothing, can we just get it done?” Michael asked distantly, hoping she would stop questioning him.

“Fine.” Amy said. They looked through some of the stores for their parents. All the time in silence. After a while it was annoying Amy that Michael hardly talked.

“Seriously, Michael, what’s going on?” Amy asked again, looking at him straightly.

“Just didn’t sleep well that night.” Michael dodged answering her question directly, “And thanks for your advice concerning Sydney.” He added out of the blue and Amy gave him an irritated look until she understood what he was meaning.

“Ah, that’s going on. What happened?” Amy asked curiously.

“I tried to kiss her and she didn’t want to, that’s what happened.” Michael said bitterly.

“Ouch,” Amy looked at him sympathetically.

“Yeah,” Michael rolled his eyes and walked away to the next store, indicating that the conversation was finished.

“So what are you going to do now?” Amy followed him.

“There’s nothing I can do, she even wants to forget about it.” Michael shrugged, pretending he was all right with that.

“You’re stupid.” Amy replied. She wondered why her little brother was giving up so easily, that didn’t sound like him.

“Thanks.” Michael made a face.

“You should know better than giving up right away. Did it ever cross your mind that she’s just afraid?” Amy asked.

“So what? I should try again?” Michael looked at her questioning.

“Yeah,” Amy answered, sounding as if it was the easiest thing in the world, “But not right away, give her a bit more time. It’s much more complicated for her than for you.”

“Okay,” Michael nodded, though he wasn’t sure that Amy was right.

“Now come on, we still need to find something for mom and dad.” Amy gestured Michael to follow her.
