Chapter 1

Identity can be defined as who or what a person is. It is the one thing that separates people, making one person different from any other person in this world. A person’s identity is unique, it belongs solely to them. But despite this fact people still want to hide who they really are, using an alias to become somebody else. They can try to conceal who they really are, but there is one thing that can break through the façade that they create and make them remember who they truly are. This one thing is love.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I’m sorry to inform you but the 10:55 flight to Boston will be delayed by 40 minutes.” A woman’s voice announced over the loud speaker, leading to a chorus of groans and insults from the crowds of people waiting for the flight. “One of our cabin crew is unable to make today’s flight, so we are currently waiting for her replacement to arrive. Once again, American Airlines would like to apologise for the inconvenience.”

Michael Vaughn sighed as he slouched down in his chair. Running his hand over his face and through his already ruffled hair, he stared up at the ceiling. He tried his best to imagine that he were anywhere other than there.

“Well, this sucks!” Eric Weiss commented, pulling a candy bar out of his pocket. He offered some to his friend who quickly declined; the mere thought of eating something before he flew making him feel even more nauseous.

Eric took a look around the waiting room as he ate his chocolate. Everyone wore the same frustrated expressions on their faces, but as he glanced at the man sitting beside him, he noticed a completely different expression. Michael Vaughn looked worried.

“Hey buddy, relax. It’s just a simple recon mission. We’ll be in and out in under an hour!”

Vaughn turned his head and sighed. “It’s not the mission I’m worried about Weiss.” After he finished speaking, he caught a glimpse of the airplane outside the building, making his state of panic worsen.

Weiss followed his gaze and then suddenly realised what was wrong. “Oh, I forgot about your fear…”

Taking a deep breath, Vaughn tried to distract himself by staring intently at his passport cover, but it didn’t last for long. Weiss was still talking about his fear of flying making it virtually impossible for him to think about anything else.

“You know, you should really see someone about that.”

“Really?” Vaughn asked, not really paying much attention to the conversation.

Weiss nodded. “Yeah, I mean with our job, you fly like what, 3 or 4 times a week? That must be hell for you.”

Glancing at his watch, Vaughn realised that it hadn’t even been 5 minutes since they’d made the announcement. “I deal with it.” He shrugged, hoping that the conversation would now come to a close, but Weiss wasn’t sharing that thought.

“Just try thinking about something else. Hockey, sandwiches….Alice.”

Vaughn snapped his head around to stare at Weiss. “Alice and I broke up, Eric. How many more times do I have to tell you that?”

Weiss smirked. “How many more times do you have to tell her that? You told her that you didn’t want to see her anymore, and yet she keeps calling you.”

“We’re friends.” He shrugged, growing defensive. “Friends call each other.”

“3 times a day?” Weiss asked sarcastically. Vaughn remained silent, knowing deep down that Weiss was on to something, but he didn’t want to discuss it, not now. “I’m your best friend and I don’t even call you that many times in one week.”

Vaughn rolled his eyes. “Whatever, man.”

Sydney Bristow sighed as she gave the cab driver $20. Climbing out of the car, she straightened out her uniform, the warm Californian sun beaming down on her.

“So much for my day off.” She mumbled to herself as she pulled her small suitcase through the revolving doors at the front of the building. She had planned on having a relaxing day at the beach with her best friend, Francie Calfo, but then her pager had gone off. She had ignored the first page but then after they paged her a second time she reluctantly phoned the airline. They informed her that one of the flight attendants has a case of food poisoning so Sydney was needed to replace her on the flight for that morning.

She made her way through the airport, her suitcase trailing behind her. After picking up her ticket at the check-in desk, she was able to jump the queue at customs; that was just one of the perks of being an employee there.

Placing her hand luggage on the conveyor belt, she walked through the metal detector and waited patiently as her things moved slowly through the X-Ray machine. After her small suitcase reappeared, she picked it up and smiled at the old man who was at duty and continued on her way.

Ahead of her lay Gate 12, the place where she was due to be any minute now. She sighed as she approached; wishing that she still had the day off. She kept telling herself that it was a short flight, so hopefully she would be back in time to make evening plans with Francie. As she got closer to the gate, people sat up in their seats looking hopeful that she was the woman they had been waiting for.

"Here goes nothing!" She sighed, walking closer to the gate.
