You learned some very valuable lessons today Michael. How to cope with a major hangover and to how to crawl and grovel.

Thanks for the PM.

Chris

YAY!!
UPDATE ASAP

It would be nice if this was the angst you aluded to.
But I knew better, even before you mentioned it in later posts.

I'm glad he knew immediately that he needed to apologize for his behavior.
Sydney did have some valid fears regarding professional male athletes.
But, like Francie said, he is a freak. I don't think he will be like that.

I'm still worried about the angst to come.

im soo glad she forgave him otherwise it wouldnt be very good 😌

Vaughn, a freak, you've got to be kidding me although Francie kinda has a point LoL

thanx for the PM 👍

Chapter 76
In the next few weeks, Michael and Sydney fell into a similar pattern. They would get up, get ready for the day, leave (practice for Michael; the rink for Sydney), then come home, eat dinner together and watch TV on the couch where Sydney usually massaged whatever part of Michael’s body had taken a rough beating in practice that day, typically his shoulders and back..

Sooner than he realized, it was the first week in October and Michael was starting his first NHL game. Everyone (Sydney, Jess, George and his parents) was going.

“So, I’ve never been to an NHL game before,” Sydney admitted as the five of them made their way to their seats in the Wachovia Center the night of Michael’s first game.

“Really?” George and Bill asked.

“Yeah,” Sydney laughed. “I’d never been to a hockey game before Michael’s Team USA games,” she explained to them.

“Uh oh, NHL virgin.” George smiled.

“Should I be afraid?” Sydney whispered to Amelia.

“Yep,” Amelia told her.

“Great,” she groaned.

“So first, we need to get the girl a beer!” George said, locking an arm around Sydney’s neck.

“I hate beer,” she told him.

George gasped, removed his arm from her neck and clapped his hand over his heart as if he had been physically injured by her comment. “We cannot let her in the family!”

“HEY!” she whined.

“Pay no attention to him,” Amelia said to her.

“Yeah, quit being an idiot,” Jess scolded him.

“Whatever, just cheer for a fight,” George said.

“I don’t want Michael to fight,” Sydney said, utterly confused by the new, insane world she had entered.

“No, not him. He doesn’t fight... the other guys,” George explained. Sydney rolled her eyes.

“Don’t worry, at least you understand the rules of the game,” Amelia said.

“Relatively,” Sydney laughed.

“When Bill and Michael first took Jessica and I to a game, we were so clueless,” Amelia laughed.

“Yeah, it was great though, because we asked them a million questions and annoyed them to death. They never asked us to go to another game after that.” Jessica laughed.

“That’s right,” Bill commented. Sydney laughed.

It was twenty more minutes before the game started, but the crowd’s roar was deafening when all the players took the ice. Sydney and everyone else stood and cheered as they saw Michael skate by in his Flyers jersey. Sydney knew that Michael must have been beside himself with joy at that moment and so was she, just knowing that he was that happy.

Sydney had to admit she was incredibly nervous for him, especially when he took center ice as they dropped the puck. He was checked into a wall almost immediately causing a great groan from the crowd, but he recovered quickly and kept on skating.

Though the Flyers lost the game, Michael was able to score one goal. After the game, everyone went down to the area outside the locker rooms where the players came out after the game. The mood of the players wasn’t the best, since they had lost the game, but Michael still couldn’t wipe the smile off his face.

“You were fantastic, son,” Bill smiled proudly as he gave him a pat on the back.

“Thanks Dad.” Michael grinned.

Sydney walked over and kissed his cheek. “Great game.”

“Thanks Syd,” he smiled at her.

“So, Vaughn, are we finally getting to meet the ball and chain?” one player, who had just exited the locker room, asked.

Michael rolled his eyes slightly. “Yes, this is Sydney. Syd this is....”

“Joni, nice to meet you,” the man interrupted as he extended his hand towards Sydney.

“Nice to meet you too,” Sydney laughed.

“Come on Mike, we’re going for ice cream!” George said in a voice sounding like that of an excited child.

“Great,” Michael laughed.

~*~

“Oh my god, guess what?!!” Michael asked excitedly as he bounced up and down when Sydney came home from work. He had just returned from playing a game up in New York against the Islanders.

“Well, hello to you too,” Sydney laughed.

“Sorry, hi,” he said, leaning over and kissing her quickly. “But guess what?!”

There was a loud belch from the other room where Eric walked passed the doorway scratching something that made Sydney want to gouge her vision out. She cleared her throat and grimaced. “Eric’s visiting?” she asked weakly.

“BETTER! Eric got traded to the Flyers!” Michael grinned.

“Oh that’s great. It’s... NO!” Sydney interrupted her own train of thought at the angelic smile on her fiancée’s face.

“What?” he asked.

“He cannot stay here.”

“But Syd...”

“He cannot stay here,” Sydney repeated firmly.

“Syd,” Michael whined.

“CANNOT!” she said louder and more forcefully.

“Two weeks,” Michael begged. Sydney huffed. “One week!”

“Two days,” Sydney told him.

“Syd...”

“Fine, a week, but if he doesn’t have a place by then, I swear he’ll live at the rink!” she told him.

“Okay, deal. Thank you, I love you.” He grinned, putting his arms around her waist and kissing her.

“Yeah, yeah,” she sighed.

“Hey Syd,” Eric said as he walked into the kitchen where they were talking.

“Hi Eric. So you got traded?”

“Yep, DC didn’t want me,” Eric told her.

“Oh..., sorry.”

“Nah, it’s cool. I didn’t like anyone there anyway. They all thought I sucked.”

“You don’t suck,” Sydney told him.

“Yeah, tell them that,” he muttered.

“Well, the Flyers think you’re good,” Sydney said hopefully.

“Yeah, but their other goalie got killed so....,” Eric shrugged.

“Got killed?” Sydney looked to Michael for clarification.

“Someone skated into him and broke his leg,” Michael explained.

“Ouch,” Sydney grimaced.

“Yeah, but the blood all over the ice was cool!” Eric laughed.

“Lovely....,” Sydney sighed.

Chapter 77
The first two weeks she barely even noticed. She was busy doing things with the rink. Peewee hockey was starting, as were the high school teams and she was frantically trying to schedule their games so that the rink wasn’t double booked. Besides, he only had three away games and he called her every night when he was gone. Then, the third week, it hit her.

Michael was going to be away most of the time. It would be like back when they were training for the Olympics and she only saw him every few weeks. Well, not quite that dramatic. True, he was home every few days but he wasn’t home. He was either playing games or practicing or sleeping because he was exhausted. They didn’t spend as much time together as they had and Sydney missed it.

For seven months, she had completely uninterrupted time with Michael. They had hardly been apart for more than a few days at a time and she loved it. She loved going to sleep beside him every night and waking up with him in the mornings. She loved eating every meal with him. She even loved his stupid comments towards TV shows she loved. She just loved being around him and more than anything, she loved that this was what her life would be like forever. She would be Michael’s wife and they would have days like that for the rest of time. She loved that. But now, he wasn’t there and that was difficult.

She knew that Michael was having a blast with the Flyers and she was thrilled for him. She had never seen him happier (when he was awake, that was). He loved practice. He loved the games, even the ones they didn’t win. He’d talk about his teammates constantly, even though not all of them particularly liked him. Sydney couldn’t figure out why though, since Michael was..., well, Michael. She suspected, though, that they resented his already bonded friendship with Eric. But, Michael did seem even happier (as if that was possible) since Eric joined the team.

Eric, however, wasn’t having as great a time considering that Sydney practically threw him out of the house, which for some reason (that Sydney couldn’t understand), he took personal offense to. She had given him fair warning, but a week after he moved in he was still on the couch. Then, she gave him a three day warning, but still, he was there. So, when he and Michael came home from their game in Florida, Eric’s belongings were on the front yard which caused a loud argument between them. In the end, Eric lost and he had to find an apartment immediately so that he wouldn’t be homeless.

Sydney refused to tell Michael about her feelings about him being away. She didn’t want to upset him, or make him worry about her. So, she decided that she needed a plan; something to keep her busy and get her mind off missing him. A few months back, someone had contacted her about joining the Champions on Ice. At the time, she had turned them down, but she had been reconsidering it greatly. After giving the head of the tour a call, she found that they would still be very glad to have her, even if it was only for the second half of the tour.

“Michael, can I talk to you about something?” Sydney asked him as she sat beside him on the couch one evening when he didn’t have a game.

“Sure, what’s up?” he asked, looking away from the TV.

“Well, you know that Champions on Ice thing?” she asked.

“Uh, no?”

She laughed softly. “It’s this thing where figure skating champions tour around the country and perform for people. Kinda like the skating exhibitions we did only... on tour,” she explained.

“Ohhh, ok gotcha. I think my mom dragged my dad to that one year,” Michael told her.

Sydney laughed. “Yeah, well they asked me to come join them and I figured since you were, you know, busy with the Flyers and stuff...”

“Oh yeah, totally. If you wanna go, go.” He smiled.

“Thanks,” Sydney said as she leaned over and kissed him gently.

“So when is it?” he asked.

“Umm, it starts next week and it will go until the first week of December,” she told him.

“Wow, next week? Do you have a routine ready?” Michael asked.

Sydney shrugged. “I’ll come up with something. I’ll probably just use the Olympic one or the World’s one. They’re the ones I keep practicing over and over anyway.”

“Ah, ok. Francie’s gonna kill you, you know that, right?”

“Why?” She laughed.

“Because, this is a major skating decision that you failed to consult her on,” Michael said.

“How do you know she’ll kill me for that?” Sydney laughed.

“Syd, I’ve known you for, like, two years,” he said.

“Good point. But, Francie is busy at the moment. She found the love of her life.” Sydney sighed in a dreamy way.

“Uh oh,” Michael laughed, knowing that couldn’t possibly be what it sounded.

“Yeah, did I mention he’s her teacher oh, and he’s married.”

“Niiiiiice,” Michael said.

“Yeah, she’s hopeless.” Sydney laughed.

~*~

In the next week, Sydney was busy to the point of frantic. Not only was she perfecting the routine she would be performing, but she was organizing her things. She had forgotten that touring around the country meant that she wouldn’t actually be home and she would need to bring her belongings with her. She also had to find a temporary replacement for her management position at the rink while she was away.

The date of her flight to California (where the tour was starting) came much too quickly for Sydney’s wishes. At the last minute she was frantically running around finding extra skates and throwing clothes into suitcases. She barely had enough time to kiss Michael goodbye before rushing off to the airport just in time to board her flight.

When she met the other champions she would be skating with, she was nervous. Some of them she knew, but most she didn’t. Most of them were well known skaters from years past who Sydney was simply in awe of, but thankfully they were very kind and friendly to her. She was still nervous about the whole idea of touring, but knew it would be good for her to get out and keep her mind off missing Michael.
