Into the Setting Sun

They saved each other's lives. However, Sydney still better give him a hero's welcome (not only a lover's) because he did win the battle and probably saved her principality.

Chris

I knew she would read the note.
Now she knows his feelings are reciprocated.
It's her turn to let him know how she feels about him.

He does know her, he knew she wouldn't stay where he told her.
But, she saved his life by not listening to him.
He, in turn, got to save her life, too.

That poor doctor. He was probably very confused as to why she was there.

Can't wait for Sydney to wake up to find Michael by her bed.

Chapter 7
Michael sat there watching Sydney almost twenty minutes before he began to drift off to sleep in his overly-exhausted state. Before he was completely out, though, she began to stir and when she saw him sitting beside her, she smiled. “Michael,” she said quietly. At the sound of his name, he jumped but then quickly regained his composure as a smile spread across his face, matching the smile on hers. “Come ‘ere,” she requested, gesturing towards a large space beside her on her bed. He hesitated moving but she gave him an insisting look so he moved and sat down cautiously.

“How are you feeling?” he asked her, slipping his hand in hers.

“Like I was hit in the head and sworded in the side,” she responded.

He laughed softly, “Is sworded a word?”

“I don’t think so,” she smiled. Then, she lifted her hand to his cheek and gently traced along a scab that had formed there. “Are you alright?”

“Sure, just a few scratches here and there,” he said with a casual shrug.

“Mm,” she sighed. Then, using her palms flat against her bed she tried to push herself up into a sitting position. This caused her a sharp pain in her side and she winced.

“You should be lying down,” he said as he slid closer to her, unsure whether he should help or not.

“I want to sit up, help please,” she grunted. Gently, with one had on each of her arms, he helped her sit up against the headboard of her bed. Once sitting she was in less pain but she still clutched her side for a few moments until the throbbing pain disappeared. “I’m okay,” she added at the concerned look on his face; he rolled his eyes.

“Michael,” she said softly. He looked at her intently. Gently, she reached up and grabbed the collar of his shirt, meaning to pull him closer to her, but he needed no more invitation than that. He closed the distance between them and pressed a gentle kiss onto her lips.

She tried to hold him there, wanting more than a simple peck, but he pulled back, dropping his eyes to the bed. “Princess…,” he began slowly, though he had no idea what he was about to say.

With this she laughed softly. “What have I told you about calling me that?” she asked him. He still refused to meet her eye so she guided his face upwards with her fingertips underneath his chin. A small smile crept across her face as the long-awaited words left her lips, “I love you too.”

For a moment he didn’t react, wondering if she had really said what she said. Then, slowly, a smile grew across his face and he leaned back in to kiss her again. That time Sydney got her wish and their kiss was slow but passionate. She brought her hands around to the back of his neck as his one hand went to her side where it unfortunately hit her wound, causing her to hiss in pain.

“Oh god I’m sorry!” he apologized quickly, pulling back and cringing, but the smile quickly returned to Sydney’s face; nothing could get her mood down then.

“It’s okay,” she said, though he was still hesitant to place his hands anywhere near her again. She took his hand in hers and brought it up to her face, kissing the back of it. They sat in silence for a few moments before Sydney said softly, “Michael.” Once he was looking at her again she continued, “Will you be my prince?”

A soft but growing smile crossed his face and though he knew a resounding ‘yes’ was definitely one response option, he had another one in mind. “I don’t know,” he began casually. A confused look of almost horror crossed her face and he continued. “Well, I’m supposed to think of you as a man, am I not? That could be very strange,” he finished with a grin.

She let out a loud laugh that caused a sharp pain in her side, which made her wince. “Don’t do that,” Michael told her.

“Don’t make me,” she retorted.

He leaned his face into hers and kissed her briefly. Then, leaning his forehead against hers, he locked eyes with her and asked softly, “Are you sure this is what you want, Sydney?”

She smiled at the sound of her first name being emphasized by him. “This is what I’ve always wanted,” she assured him.

“Well, in that case I’ll accept, but only under one condition,” he told her firmly. Her brow furrowed at him, wondering what his condition could possibly be. “No more battles,” he said with a slight grin.

She giggled, but as softly as she could manage with her injured side. “I accept that condition but I have one of my own – no battles for you either,” she said. His face fell and he opened his mouth to protest but she placed her fingers over his lips stopping him. “I’m serious. I know my father fought in battles but he also nearly died and eventually did die… I can’t lose you that way,” she added quieter before averting her eyes to her lap.

He nudged his face up against hers, kissing her cheek in the process. “You won’t.”

A grin broke out across her face before she threw her arms around his neck and hugged him tightly. She didn’t even care about the pain that caused in her side; she needed to hold him. He nuzzled his face into her neck and sighed, “Mmm Sydney I love you.”

“I love you too,” she said with a smile. “And we’re going to get married – let’s do it tomorrow!” she said excitedly. He laughed. “Too soon…?”

“Not if I’m marrying you,” he told her as he gathered her hands up in his. She smiled. “However, I think we should actually wait until you can walk or, you know, stand at the wedding.”

“I guess that might help,” she said in a dramatic tone that made him laugh. “I think I’m going to take another nap, help me lay down please?” she requested. He nodded and helped gently guide her down into a lying position. “Can you stay until I fall asleep?”

“Absolutely,” he said. Then, he leaned over and kissed her softly before stroking her hand gently as she fell asleep. Unfortunately, his exhaustion combined with pure joy overtook him and he was soon asleep beside her.
