So in order for them to be together they are gonna have to move since you can't live in the In-between...
I can't believe how his mother reacted. If his mom was that bad then her father is gonna be worse...

I never thought someday I would say this about Vaughn's mother but what a bitch  , why can't she let her son be happy? Is it too much to ask?
They should move to another country where there isn't this whole east/west thing, that way they will be at peace and no one will be on their back to force them to break up

Great update. I thought he was actually going to break up with her because his mother told him to for a minute there. Glad that didn't happen.

Vaughn should have let his mother have it!!
-He should have let his mother kick him out and then he could live with Syd secretly!! :D
I'm really glad he didn't listen to his mother!!

Syd and Vaughn, the two of you need to move out of East and West Lasonvia. Go to another country. You aren't losing parents...your gaining a life, TOGETHER!!!

Chris

Great updates! Mrs. Vaughn is rude, because she has no reasons to hate Easterners so therefore she hates Sydney? Ohhhhhh boyyyy. Can't wait to see how he solves and lies to his mom about this...

-erin

Wonder how long it will take his mother to figure out that nothing has really changed.
He will continue going to The In-Between just as often.

oh man oh man.....this is not going to end well.....well for right now it's not! can't wait for more! personally if she threw him out, then maybe there would be a way for him to go live with syd...and who would hate that?

btw if there is someone named "TraceyAnne" who keeps trying to register for OI with a hotmail address you should PM me because your application was incomplete

Chapter 10
For Michael, the few weeks following his blow up with his mother were rather somber. For starters, he really wasn’t actually speaking with his mother all that much. As far as she knew, Michael was angry with her because she made him break up with Sydney, which was the truth except she didn’t realize that Sydney and Michael were still together. Michael didn’t really care that his mother was keeping her distance from him; he didn’t want to speak to her anyway. Not only was he angry with her for forcing him into breaking up with Sydney, but for her overall attitude towards the Easterners in general, including Sydney. At one point, he was actually disgusted to be related to her.

Meanwhile, Sydney couldn’t help but feel guilty for essentially causing the rift between Michael and his mother. Michael assured her that it wasn’t her fault at all; his mother’s opinion towards Easterners would have been the same if they’d never even met one another. Still, Sydney felt guilty especially since their continued relationship meant that he was lying to his mother and would continue lying to her as long as they were together.

Michael finally removed himself from his slight funk as Sydney’s twenty-first birthday approached. He decided that he was going to throw her a party, as impossible as that seemed. He arranged to meet her the day before her birthday to celebrate with her. He went to the library two hours early and decorated their third floor corner with streamers and balloons and anything else he could think of. When Sydney arrived at their designated meeting time, he took her up to the third floor and showed her what he’d done. Sydney was so surprised and touched she nearly started crying (though she blamed that on PMS). She later told Michael that it was the best birthday she’d ever had just because she could spend it with him.

After Sydney’s birthday, she and Michael became very busy with their school work. The end of their third year was approaching and they were consumed with projects and papers to write. Around this time, Sydney began to think more seriously about her relationship with Michael. They’d been together nearly eight months and their relationship was the most serious she’d ever had.

Ever since her argument with her mother over meeting her boyfriend in secret at the library, things between them had been strained. Feeling guilty about this, Sydney finally decided to come clean with her. “Mom, I’d like you to meet my boyfriend, Michael,” she said one evening while they were eating dinner.

Her mother looked up from her plate and over to her daughter curiously. “Alright… he could come over to dinner or-”

“No,” Sydney said quickly. “I want you to come with me to meet him on Saturday.”

“Why can’t he-”

“Mom,” Sydney cut her off with a sigh, “I know this is confusing but you just have to trust me, okay? I promise you’ll understand once you meet him and then I’ll explain everything, alright? Just please come with me.”

“Alright,” her mother agreed with a sigh, though she still looked extremely confused a
nd skeptical.

Sydney decided not to tell Michael that she’d be bringing her mother with her for their Saturday visit. She figured there was no reason to give him a virtual stroke and anxiety for three days leading up to their meeting. On Saturday, feeling slightly nervous, Sydney and her mother began their drive to The In-between. Sydney was nervous about her mother’s reaction to her Westerner boyfriend, but also because she hadn’t driven her car with her mother in the passenger seat since she’d first received her license. That alone was enough to catapult her nerves off the charts.

“Sydney where on earth are we going?” her mother demanded as they grew closer to The In-between.

“You’ll see,” Sydney sighed. When Sydney turned off the main road and down the one and only road that led to The In-between’s border, she felt her mother tense beside her.

“Sydney,” her mother began cautiously, “I didn’t bring my passport…”

“I have it,” Sydney assured her. She’d made sure to grab it before they left. They drove through the border with no trouble at all and, after another ten minutes of driving, they pulled up in front of the library. Michael was sitting on the steps waiting outside for them, but he stood when they pulled up. (As the weather grew warmer, Sydney stopped picking Michael up on the Western border and only picked him up if it was raining.)

Immediately after getting out of the car, Sydney saw the look of concern on Michael’s face. Though her mother hadn’t stepped out yet, it was obvious she wasn’t the car’s only passenger. “What’s going on?” Michael asked nervously through gritted teeth.

“I wanted her to meet you,” Sydney told him quietly. As she said this, her mother stepped out of the car, looking just as concerned as ever. “Mom this is Michael, my boyfriend.”

“It’s, um, nice to meet you,” Michael stammered nervously.

If Sydney’s mother hadn’t gotten the hint when they crossed over to The In-between, the clash of their accents was a sure fire sign that Michael was not from East Lasonvia. She didn’t show any reaction whatsoever to it in her face, though, she merely extended her hand and shook Michael’s. “Nice to meet you too,” she said, her tone quiet.

“Michael and I met here at the library eight months ago,” Sydney explained as she gripped Michael’s hand tightly. “We keep meeting here… or going to the ice cream shop… or the burger place… that’s all we can do really,” she laughed slightly.

“I see,” her mother said in a short tone as she crossed her arms in front of her, taking a tighter grip on her purse. Sydney and Michael exchanged looks while gulping slightly; it was going to be a long afternoon.

~*~

As the afternoon progressed, Sydney’s mother thankfully became looser in conversing with them. Of course looser from dead silent and scowling wasn’t exactly the atmosphere Sydney desired, but it was better than nothing. She and her mother only stayed and talked with Michael for about an hour, before the awkwardness was killing them both. Sydney began giving Michael looks until he finally took the hint and announced that he had to go. Then, he gave Sydney a quick kiss on the cheek before leaving.

Sydney and her mother climbed back into the car silently. They said nothing as they drove out of The In-between, showed their passports, and then continued driving towards home. Finally, when they parked in their driveway Sydney groaned in frustration, “Would you say something please!”

“You should have told me,” her mother said simply.

“I know I should have but… but I wasn’t sure how you’d react, you know? When Michael’s mother found out, she forced him to break up with me!”

“But… you’re not broken up,” her mother said with confusion.

“I know that. Michael’s sorta lying to his mother about us but that’s not the point. The point is I was afraid that would happen with you too and… and I dunno. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you,” she said quietly, casting her eyes down to the ground.

Her mother sighed. “I’m not going to make you break up with Michael, Sydney. You’re twenty-one years old you can make your own choices. Michael is a very nice boy but… well, I’m concerned that you don’t know what you’ve gotten yourself into here Sydney. There’s lots of prejudice on both sides of this,” her mother informed her.

“I know that. I know, I know,” Sydney groaned frustrated. “I mean, obviously the only place we can see each other is in a three square mile area but… I love him and… and we haven’t really talked about the future we’re just… in love,” she said with a soft smile. Her mother gave her a half smile in return before walking inside their house.

The way Sydney said it, so innocently... was so *sigh* They have to find a way to get together!!!!!!!!!
