Spooky romantic comedy will star Matthew McConaughey

Busy "Alias" star Jennifer Garner is in negotiations to play the female lead in the comedy "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past."

The New Line production, long in development, will be directed by Mark Waters.

"Ghosts" is already slated to star Matthew McConaughey as a man whose visit to his brother's wedding is interrupted by spectral visits from his past girlfriends. How's that for a self-explanatory title? In any case, he comes to realize that he was always truly in love with his childhood sweetheart. According to the industry trades, Garner is set to play said sweetheart.

The coincidence here is that "Ghosts" was originally developed as a starring vehicle for Garner's hubby and baby-daddy Ben Affleck.

Garner is preparing for a Broadway run as Roxanne opposite Kevin Kline in "Cyrano." That will come as she's also promoting a slate of fall movies that includes the action drama "The Kingdom" and the buzzworthy comedy "Juno."
