Your link isn't working - you need to spellcheck 'fiction' :) Congrats on getting the story published. I'm checking it out right now.

    Interzone 218

I'd no idea Interzone was still going strong! Where do you get it from as I've never seen it in my local WH Smiths.

a theme in fiction im very sick of..

What about Asimov waaaay back in olden days - one of his principle characters was a detective. Can't remember the name but he was the principle protagonist in The Caves of Steel. Maybe not hard boiled but detective nonetheless. People love mystery type stories so there's plenty of scope for more...

    Sci-Fi Watchmen (2009)

Re: Watchmen (2009) - Official Thread I'm with you there. Sin City (and 300) worked so well as graphic novels because the basic plots suited the dark and arty artwork. Transferred to film aaaaand nope... just didn't quite work...

    Sci-Fi Watchmen (2009)

Re: Watchmen (2009) - Official Thread The ending especially sucked. Why they felt the need to totally change the ending is beyond me. But generally, the book is too complex and multi layered to transfer to film while keeping all the nuances. It became a simple action film with flowery phrases...

    What have you been reading?

Brilliant book. I need to read more Iain M Banks' stuff but I never get round to it. I'm currently reading Green Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson, a hard core sci-fi tale of the colonisation of Mars. It's very good and I'd recommend it!

    Sci-Fi Watchmen (2009)

Re: Watchmen (2009) - Official Thread Watchmen is one of my all time favourite books so I really hope it doesn't get screwed up like V for Vendetta did. It's doesn't have a simple plot that can be easily adapted to film so I can't say I'm too hopeful :(

    Fantasy

I always thought that fantasy was wizards and orcs, sword and sorcery whilst sci-fi was more about advanced technology.

    Space Warfare

I can totally relate to wanting to cram as much into a story as possible but be careful that you don't overwhelm your readers! From what I've been reading, you've got some really great ideas already so run with them for a bit before cramming in something else :) I also find hard sci-fi too...

    Space Warfare

Where unequal forces meet (think Afghanistan for example) the weaker force will retreat to territory it knows well and run a guerilla warfare campaign. In a space war context, you would be looking at onplanet warfare mixed with knowledge of asteroid belts, where the best places to hide on moons/...

do you prefer short story collections or novels?

It depends is my answer! I'm wasn't a fan of short stories until I read Asimov's collections which I enjoyed very much indeed. Same story (excuse the pun) when I came across Ray Bradbury's works. Some authors (such as the forementioned) write excellent short stories but many just don't do it for...
