In some behind the scenes pictures Rick has his hand wrapped up it is all still there though. But, in the trailer he does start to fight Tyrese maybe he broke his hand then.

There's rumors that Norman Reedus is trying to get Daryl into the comic book. Which if he does Merle will most likely be to. Of they agree to that they plan to have him live for a while.
