Here’s a Letter
“Something weird is definitely up with my mom” Sydney told Francie as they sat drinking coffee in her house.
“Why do you say that?” Francie asked her.
“I just…do” Sydney shrugged.
“Hm. Makes sense” Francie rolled her eyes.
“I just know my mom…that’s all” Sydney told her as they heard the mail being dropped in the mailbox, “Just let me grab that”
“Sure” Francie nodded as Sydney stood up and grabbed the mail, tossing it absently onto a chair.

Sydney picked up the mail she had received, noting specifically the scrawl she had only seen twice before, once on a phone number and once on a card and itinerary, quickly Sydney found herself opening the letter.
Sydney,
Well, I just got here, and I have to admit, I liked it better when I was hanging out with you until all hours of the night. I’m not really busy right now, so it will probably be easy for us to correspond, and hopefully, you will return my letters because I want nothing more than to hear from you, to know how you are, to know what is going through you’re head. My best friend’s head.
It was the longest flight of my life to get here…I kept thinking about you Syd, it nearly killed me to see you like that, fragile and broken. I just…I really hope that you’re okay because it would kill me if you weren’t. I didn’t choose to go…I was obligated, but I don’t regret it because I know that you and I will see each other when I get back to the States. How else do you think that I’m going to get out of the airport?
Sydney felt herself chuckle as she read it, tears were streaming down her face as she realized just how much she missed this man, he had become her rock—her best friend.
All the guys who were off with me, or around the same time as me want to meet you. They say you’ve given me this crazy smile or fearlessness or something. I hope it’s true because I need that from you. Wow…I feel like I’m running out of things to say, but at the same time, there is so much I want to tell you I just…I can’t write it.
So I guess I’ll leave it at that, please respond to this Sydney.

Sydney couldn’t help but smile through the tears, she had wanted to know that he was okay, and now she did, but to know that he missed her and that she meant something to him, it nearly sent her over the edge.

“Syd, are you okay?” Francie waved her hand in front of Sydney’s face.
“Huh? Oh…yeah” Sydney nodded.
“You sure?” Francie looked at her.
“Positive” Sydney told her.
“Okay…um…shift is over…go home”
“Uh…okay” Sydney stood up, grabbing all of her things, “What are you up to tonight?”
“Going out with Will” Francie told her.
“That’s bar guy…right?” Sydney looked at her.
“Yep” Francie nodded.
“Who’d have thought you’d meet a guy at The Ranch?”
